Faculty of Dentistry Chulalongkorn University 2023 7 พ.ศ. ๒๔๖๙ นายแพทยวาด ไดเขาเฝาสมเด็จพระเจาพี่ยาเธอเจาฟามหิดล อดุลยเดช กรมหลวงสงขลานครินทร ที่เมืองบอสตัน พระองค ทานทรงสนพระทัยไมนอย รับสั่งวาบานเรามีโรคฟนมาก เรายัง ไมไดจัดการอะไรเปนล่ำเปนสัน ถานายแพทยวาด จะกลับไปทำ แลวจะประทานเงินสวนพระองค ๑,๐๐๐,๐๐๐ บาทใหเริ่มตน แต เปนที่นาเสียดายเพราะภายหลังเสด็จ กลับไมนาน ไดประชวร และ สิ้นพระชนมเมื่อ วันที่ ๒๔ กันยายน พ.ศ.๒๔๗๒ จึงอาจกลาวได วาพระองค ทานเปนบุคคลแรกของประเทศไทยที่เห็นความสำคัญ ของวิชาทันตแพทยศาสตร พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๑ ถึง พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๒ พ.ศ.๒๔๗๑ นายแพทย วาด แยมประยูร ไดเสนอความคิดใน การกอตั้งโรงเรียนทันตแพทยในประเทศไทย ตอศาสตราจารย เอเจ เอลลิส คณบดีแพทยศาสตร แตไมสำเร็จเนื่องจากขาด งบประมาณ ในป พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๙ ได ติดตอ กับ พ.อ.หลวงพิบูล สงคราม (จอมพล ป. พิบูล สงคราม) ซึ่งไดรับอนุมัติ ใหดำเนิน การได โดยพระเจาวรวงศ เธอพระองค เจาจุลจักร พงษ ไดประทาน เงิน ๗,๐๐๐ บาท ใหสรางตึกบำบัดโรคฟนขึ้น ที่กองเสนารักษ มณฑล ทหารบกที่ ๑ ตอมาในป พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๑ ทันตแพทย สี สิริสิงห ไดเขาเฝาสมเด็จ พระราชชนนีศรีสังวาลย กราบทูลขอ พระกรุณา ให อุปถัมภ โรงเรียน ทันตแพทย ที่จะจัดตั้งขึ้น และในป พ.ศ.๒๔๘๒ พันเอกหลวงวาจวิทยาวัฒฑน ไดรวมปรึกษา กับ นายสุกิจ นิมมานเหมินท เลขาธิการจุฬาลงกรณ มหาวิทยาลัย เพื่อวางแผนจัดตั้งแผนกทันตแพทยศาสตรขึ้นในจุฬาลงกรณ มหาวิทยาลัย ดวยความชวยเหลืออยางดียิ่งจากศาสตราจารย สุกิจ นิมมานเหมินท เลขาธิการจุฬาลงกรณ มหาวิทยาลัย พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๓ วันที่ ๑๖ พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๓ นายพลตรี หลวงพิบูล สงคราม อธิการบดีจุฬาลงกรณมหาวิทยาลัยไดประกาศตั้ง แผนกทันตศาสตร เปนแผนกอิสระ ในจุฬาลงกรณมหาวิทยาลัย และตั้งใหนายพันเอกหลวงวาจวิทยาวัฑฒน ดำรงตำแหนง หัวหนาเเผนกทันตเเพทยศาสตร ตั้งแตบัดนั้นเปนตนไป พรอมกันนั้นก็ไดเชิญ พ.ท.สี สิริสิงห มาเปนอาจารยพิเศษ ดวย 1926 Dr. Vach Yamprayoon (Luang Vach Vidyavaddhana) visited His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol in Boston. His Highness, who showed great interest in the dental health of the Thai people, and planned to donate one million baht of his own personal money to start the dental faculty. Unfortunately, His Majesty died on September 24th, 1929. It can be said that His Majesty was the first person in Thailand to see the importance of dentistry. 1928 to 1939 In 1928, Dr. Vach proposed the idea of establishing a dental school in Thailand to Prof. Aj Ellis, Dean of Medicine, but failed due to the lack of budget. In the year 1936, he was contacted by Col. Luang Phibunsongkhram (Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram), who approved his proposal. By Her Royal Highness Princess Chulalongkorn approved the sum of 7,000 baht for a dental treatment building to be built at the 1st Army County Sheriff’s Division. Later in the year 1938, Dr. Sirisinha visited Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra and asked that she would sponsor the dental school that was to be established. In the year 1939 Colonel Luang Vach Vidyavaddhana consulted with Mr. Sukich Nimmanheminda, Secretary-General of Chulalongkorn University, to help plan and establish the Department of Dentistry 1940 On May 16th, 1940, Major General Luang Phibunsongkhram, the President of Chulalongkorn University, announced the establishment of the Dentistry Department as an independent department in Chulalongkorn University, and appointed Colonel Luang Vach Vidyavaddhana to serve as the Head of the Department of Dentistry.Lt. 8 Faculty of Dentistry Chulalongkorn University 2023 พ.ศ. ๒๔๘k จอมพล ป. พิบูลสงคราม นายกรัฐมนตรีมีคำสั่งใหโอนกิจการ ของจุฬาลงกรณมหาวิทยาลัยที่เกี่ยวกับสาธารณสุขไดแก คณะ แพทยศาสตรและโรงพยาบาลศิริราช แผนกทันตแพทยศาสตร แผนกเภสัชกรรมศาสตร และแผนกสัตวแพทยศาสตร มาขึ้น กับกรมมหาวิทยาลัยแพทยศาสตร กระทรวงสาธารณสุข พ.ศ. ๒kf๘ มหาวิทยาลัยแพทยศาสตร มีการปรับปรุงกิจการใหดีขึ้น มาก จัดเปนมหาวิทยาลัยที่สมบูรณ จึงทำการเปลี่ยนชื่อ เปน มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล คณะทันตแพทยศาสตร จึงสังกัด มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล พ.ศ. ๒k๑๑ คณะทันตแพทยศาสตร มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล ดำเนินกิจการได เจริญรุงเรืองและเปนที่ตองการของประชาชนจำนวนมาก จึงได เปดคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร คณะที่ ๒ โดยใชชื่อวา คณะทันต แพทยศาสตร พญาไท มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล พ.ศ. ๒k๑k คณะทันตแพทยศาสตร มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล ถูกโอนยายกลับ มาสังกัดจุฬาลงกรณมหาวิทยาลัย เนื่องจากที่สถานที่ตั้งอยูที่ จุฬาลงกรณมหาวิทยาลัย และมีการเรียกนักศึกษาของคณะฯ ใหมวา นิสิตคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร สวนคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร พญาไท คณะที่ ๒ ยังคงสังกัดมหาวิทยาลัยมหิดลตามเดิม ทำให ประเทศไทยมีคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร ๒ คณะเปนตนมา 1942 Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram ordered the transfer of Chulalongkorn University’s affairs relating to public health, namely Faculty of Medicine and Siriraj Hospital Department of Dentistry, Pharmacy Department and the Department of Veterinary Medicine to be part of the Department of Medicine and the Ministry of Health 1965 University of Medicine made a lot of improvement and became a complete university, leading to the establishment being renamed the Mahidol University. The Faculty of Dentistry was then part of Mahidol University. 1968 Due to continuous success of Mahidol University’s Faculty of Dentistry, a second faculty was established under the name of the Phayathai Faculty of Dentistry, Mahidol University. 1972 The Faculty of Dentistry was transferred back to Chulalongkorn University because the location was inside Chulalongkorn’s property. The students of the new faculty were referred to as Nisit of the Faculty of Dentistry. The Phayathai branch of the Faculty of Dentistry remains under Mahidol University as before. As a result, Thailand has two faculties of dentistry at that time. Faculty of Dentistry Chulalongkorn University 2023 9 Awards Received by the Faculty The Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University, was ranked Global Top 70th university in the field of dental medicine in 2023 by the QS World University Rankings By Subject. This ranking involved an assessment of the faculty’s performance in comparison to over 500 institutions worldwide, taking into account factors such as research output, educational quality, and international reputation. The Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University was honored with the 2021 Exemplary Institution Award for Rational Drug Use Education, awarded by the National Drug System Development Committee during their 1st/2022 meeting on February 9, 2022, held at the Ministry of Public Health in Nonthaburi. The Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University, received a Certificate of Excellence for the continuing education institution with the highest number of activities among the top 5 institutions in Thailand. This recognition was awarded at the Dental Association of Thailand’s 113th Meeting (1/2022) on June 9, 2022, at Centara Grand at CentralWorld Hotel. 10 Faculty of Dentistry Chulalongkorn University 2023 Awards Received by Professors/Researchers Dr. Sirima Sritangsirikul, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, received the 1st Prize Winner of the Asian Academy of Preventive Dentistry (AAPD) LION AWARD for her work on “Breastfeeding Duration and the Risk of Dental Caries: A Prospective Cohort Study.” The award was presented at The 14th International Conference of Asian Academy of Preventive Dentistry (AAPD) held on October 1-2, 2021, in Daegu, South Korea. Prof. Thanaphum Osathanon, Department of Anatomy, was awarded the Winner Research Category Award in the Regenerative Dentistry and Craniofacial Biology Category for his work on “Mechanical force regulates induced pluripotent stem cell behaviors.” Assoc. Prof. Suphot Tamsailom, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, received the 2021 Professor Emeritus Issara Yuktanand Award for the Academic and Diagnostic Field at the 2021 Academic Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Thai Association of Periodontology. The event took place on December 2, 2021, at Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park Hotel, Bangkok. Faculty of Dentistry Chulalongkorn University 2023 11 Prof. Thanaphum Osathanon, Associate Dean for Research Affairs, was selected as an Outstanding Dentist in the Academic Field (Next-Generation) by the Thai Dental Council for the 9th term (2019-2022). Dr. Ajjima Chansaenroj, Postdoctoral Researcher, and Assistant Professor Joao N.A.R. Ferreira from the Avatar Biotechnologies for Oral Health and Healthy Longevity Research Unit, have published their research study titled “Magnetic bioassembly platforms towards the generation of extracellular vesicles from human salivary gland functional organoids for epithelial repair” in the journal Bioactive Materials, which has an Impact Factor of 14.593. Our professors received the Outstanding Poster Award at the International Symposium for Interface Oral Health Sciences 2022, held online on January 15-16, 2022. • Assoc. Prof. Chalida Limjeerajarus, Department of Periodontology, presented the poster titled “Iloprost promoted acellular cementum formation in ViVo” at the symposium. • Assist. Prof. Wannakorn Sriarj, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, presented the poster titled “The SEM-EDX Analysis of Artificial Proximal Enamel Caries Adjacent to an Alkasite Restorative Material.” Our professor received an award from the Ratchadapisek Sompoch Endowment Fund, Chulalongkorn University for the year 2022. • Research Unit (RU) Excellence Award: Assoc. Graber Outstanding Article Award Assist. Prof. Nareudee Limpuangthip, Department of Prosthodontics, received the Outstanding Young Researcher Award in the field of Health Sciences. Assist. Prof. Pintu-On Chantarawaratit and Dr. Nantharat Apiwantanakul, professors at the Orthodontics Department, received The T.M. Graber Outstanding Article Award 2022 from the World Federation of Orthodontists for their research article titled “Cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and cellular metal accumulation caused by professionally applied fluoride products in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances: A randomized clinical trial,” published in the Journal of World Federation of Orthodontists, September 2021, Volume 10, Issue 3, Pages 98-104. Assist. Prof. Joao N.A.R. Ferreira was selected as one of the 10 finalists in the 2022 IADR Joseph Lister Award for New Investigators at the 2022 ADR/APR General Session & Exhibition. Assistant Professor Joao N.A.R. Ferreira a professor at the Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University, received The Innovation of Oral Care Award 2022 from The International Association of Dental Research in collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Faculty of Dentistry Chulalongkorn University 2023 13 Dr. Charinya Kanchanasevee, a Master’s degree student in Geriatric Dentistry (International Program), received the Outstanding Research Award for Master’s Degree Students for her thesis titled “The Prevalence and Characteristic Features of Edentulism in Thai Patients and Genetic Changes Associated with Edentulism in Thai Families.” The award was given by the 2021 Ratchadapisek Sompoch Endowment Fund, Chulalongkorn University. Dr. Narin Intarak, a postdoctoral researcher at the Genomics and Precision Dentistry Research Unit, Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University, received the 1st prize for the Best Oral Presentation for Research at the international conference “The Beginning of Genomics Thailand.” The event was organized by the Thai Society of Human Genetics and the Health Systems Research Institute on February 18, 2022. Ms. Ravipha Suwittayarak, a MSc student in Oral Biology Program, received the Outstanding Poster Award at the International Symposium for Interface Oral Health Science 2022, which was held online on January 15-16, 2022. Dr. Saw Nay Min, a Ph.D. student in Community Dentistry (International Program), received the Smile Train/ GOHIRN (Global Oral Health Inequalities Research Network) award for his research on “Cross-cultural adaptation and Psychometric properties of the Myanmar version of the scale of Oral Health Outcomes for 5-year-old children (SOHO-5).”The award was presented at the 2022 IADR/APR General Session & Exhibition in China. 14 Faculty of Dentistry Chulalongkorn University 2023 Mr. Thamasorn Eamtanaporn, Mr. Thunnithi Lerdlityothin, and Mr. Suravit Kulsirorat won the 1st prize from the 2022 IADR-SEA Hatton Award in the Junior Category for their research “Osteogenesis Imperfecta: Alveolar Bone Cells Characteristics and Responses to Jagged-1” Napat Techatassanasoontorn, a sixth-year dental student, received the Luang Vach Vidyavaddhana Award for the year 2022 from the Thai Dental Council at its113th Annual Academic Meeting, held on June 8-10, 2022 at the Centara Grand at CentralWorld Hotel. Dr. Chanakarn Sinsereekul, a Higher Graduate Diploma student in Endodontics, won the championship at The 7th Endo Star: Endodontic case competition 2022, organized by the Thai Endodontics Association. She presented a non-surgical root canal treatment case in Category 3, without surgical intervention, combined with orthograde root filling. Faculty of Dentistry Chulalongkorn University 2023 19 Cross-Disciplinary Curriculum The Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University, in collaboration with the College of Public Health Sciences, Chulalongkorn University, has jointly initiated an academic collaboration to establish a cross-disciplinary curriculum for Doctor of Dental Surgery and Master of Public Health programs. This is the first initiative of its kind in Thailand, aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills of dental graduates in healthcare management, as well as fostering collaboration in research on dental public health and related fields. This endeavor will be beneficial in addressing the country’s public health challenges.
