VOL IV METAMORPHOSIS

APRIL-JUNE THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF BBS SEMARANG SECONDARY AND JUNIOR COLLEGE

L FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
I
T Michael Putera Iskandar Poei, Secondary 4 Equity
E

R
A It has been an amazing journey this school year, especially for the team members of the Young
Journalist Club who have been tirelessly pushing out issue after issue, delivering content about
R school events as well as educational articles and literary masterpieces.
Y
I would like to thank Mr. Dave, YJC’s Co-Adviser, Laoshi Feng and Mr. Yassin for proofreading
the articles in addition to teaching multiple classes in BBS. I also appreciate Nicole, our Editor-
in-Chief. She has been full of ideas from the start and is a critical thinker when solving issues
that arose during the production of the newsletter.

In addition to this, I would like to give special thanks to Mr. Ramos, our Adviser. He never gave
up on us, he never let us down, he never ran around and deserted us, and we are never gonna
give him up.

Finally, I am thankful for being part of the YJC for three years now, and saying that I have
learned something would be far from an understatement. At YJC I have assisted in organizing
events, written articles and worked with Nicole in leading the club to great heights of
achievements.

FROM THE DESK OF THE ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Nicole Kayra Budiawan, Secondary 4 Equity

I find it hard to believe that two semesters have passed and we have reached the last term of
the year. After what felt like many years of Home-Based Learning, we finally got to enjoy our last

F few weeks of term four at school. However, our offline classes seem to go in a blink of an eye, as
it is already the end of the academic year.

O After being in the Young Journalist club for two semesters as Editor-In-Chief, I would say that
L this experience has been nothing but enjoyable and I am extremely grateful for it. This is all
I thanks to each and every person in YJC who has put in all their time, effort and hardwork in
O each term’s newsletter. Definitely, the dedication of each and every member has paid off!

Of course, our team wouldn’t have come this far without Mr Ramos, our passionate team advisor
who has taught us all about journalism and guided our team throughout this academic year.
And also our team’s proofreaders: Mr Dave, who has helped us in the first semester, Laoshi Feng
and Mr Yassin, who are in charge of the Chinese and Bahasa Indonesia articles. I would also like
to thank the Associate Editor, Michael, who has been a very cheerful, hardworking and reliable
partner. Even though we are not that big of a team in numbers, I am proud to say that we were
able to create successful newsletters to contribute to the school.

Lastly, I hope that all of you would enjoy reading this term’s newsletter as much as the YJC team
has enjoyed producing it.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

Jennifer Caroline Wijaya, Secondary 4 Equity

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han is one of the #1 Ne
w York Times Bestseller. It is a story about Lara Jean, a Korean-
American high school student, who writes love letters to the boys she has crushes on. Normally, people would send out those
letters, but not Lara Jean. She keeps her love letters in a teal box that her mother gave her and hides it in her closet. Her father
and sisters don't even know about it, only her. She expects these handwritten love letters never be sent out to the mail. However,
one day, the letters are out. What will Lara Jean do after all? I found this premise interesting, which allowed me to continue
turning the page to find out what happened to Lara Jean.

B I personally like this book as it has many chapters but each chapter is short, only about 2-5 pages. I find this an advantage
O because day by day, I can spend just 10 minutes of my time to read a chapter of the book. I believe doing something regularly can
O keep us motivated to keep on reading until the end of the book.

Another reason why I decided to read the book was because it is all over social media. If you don’t know, To All The Boys is a
trilogy and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is the first book of the trilogy. Ever since the first movie of the Netflix trilogy came
out, it was all “everything on Netflix everyone is talking about”. Of course, I would immediately find a way to watch the movie
without having a subscription to Netflix and then read the e-book version to keep up with the latest trends everyone has been
talking about. Watching the movie is fun and easier as it is way more entertaining and time consuming. I understand that.
However, reading a book gives us more vocabulary, deepen connections with the characters, and relata with the characters. I
mean, what’s a world without a little imagination? Moreover, I believe that most of the students and teachers of BBS might not
have a subscription to Netflix, which is another reason why reading a book is more “free” and accessible than watching the movie.

K Lastly, I would recommend this book if you are into books with the genre of young romance. If you are not, then you shouldn’t try
and continue reading this book. This is actually another reason why I wanted to do a book review on this. I feel that the students
in BBS could relate with Lara Jean as a high school student character, especially for the girls. After reading all three books in the
trilogy, I learnt a lot about love, dating, and friendships. All challenges that Lara Jean faced in the book, I felt like this is a “normal”
kind of problem every young teenager might face. If you guys do read and enjoy reading the first book, To All The Boys I’ve Loved
Before, you can read the rest of the trilogy! I assure you that you won’t find it boring reading the other books.

R Overall, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before was a great light reading, the characters in the book were great, and I really enjoyed it.

They Both Die at the End

Lionel Jeffreyanto, Secondary 4 Equity

Imagine that you have 24 hours left to live, what would you like to do with the rest of your remaining time?

V They Both Die at the End is a young adult novel written by Adam Silvera about the journey of two teenagers,Mateo and Rufus on
I their last day alive. In this fictional universe, there is a system called the “Death Cast” which knows when everyone is going to die.
Twenty four hours before your eventual demise, you would receive a phone call warning you about what's to come.

The book tells the story from multiple perspectives on a first person vantage point, but it mainly focuses on the two protagonists,
Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio. Mateo and Rufus both received their call for their death day, before this they didn’t even know
each other existed. They met by chance through the Last Friend website which connects people on their last days so they can
spend time together. Throughout the book we get to see how their lives intertwine and come together for their last day.

E Other than the iconic Mateo and Rufus, this novel also provides us with some of best written and unforgettable side characters
W I’ve read about. All of them from Tangoe, Aimee, and Lidia fit into the story perfectly.. The most interesting part of the book was
definitely the multiple perspectives that we can read from. We get to read each of the side characters’ point of views for a few
pages. This definitely adds a lot more to the story as it is not too one sided like most stories are.

The best part of the book was the ending, although it was one of the saddest and gut wrenching endings to a book I’ve read, It
was the perfect ending to the story. In addition, the very last line of the book allows the reader to make up their own conclusions
based on how they view the situation.

In conclusion, this novel was very well written by Adam Silvera. All the characters were interesting and unique, and the multiple
points of view format fit perfectly with the novel. I would recommend this novel to people who enjoy fast paced stories with a
fictional setting.

“Death is inevitable for everyone and it’s absolute for me today.”

Do they both die at the end ? Read the book yourselves to find out.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

Nicole Kayra Budiawan, Secondary 4 Equity

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is the first novel of the Peculiar Children hexology written by Ransom Riggs, who is
an American writer and filmmaker. This book is a horror/mystery fiction book that includes vintage photographs, good plot and
interesting characters.

B The protagonist of the story, Jacob Magellan Portman, is an ordinary 16 year-old American teenager, who has a not so ordinary
O grandpa. When Jacob Portman was young, he idolized his Grandpa Abe, a man who was raised in an orphanage, fought in wars,
O and even performed in the circus. Grandpa Abe tells Jacob fantastic stories and shows him photos of peculiar children—invisible
K boys, strong girls, and people with mouths in the back of their heads. He believed these tales but eventually forgot them as he
got older.
R
E One day, his grandfather started screaming about monsters coming to get him. Jacob’s dad always said that this was caused by
V dementia. However, when Jacob goes to check on his grandfather, he finds him dead at the hands of a monster. Unhinged and
I confused, he decides to visit his grandfather’s home to discover the truth.
E
So, Jacob and his dad fly to Cairnholm Island, in Wales, and find out that Miss Peregrine's home is already wrecked years ago.
Snooping around the decaying estate, Jacob finds an album of old photos like the ones Grandpa had. But then, he gets caught
by a girl who can generate fire from her hands. The girl and her friends run when they see Jacob, but he chases them. They lead
him to a loop of the past-September 3, 1940, the day before Miss Peregrine's home was destroyed by a bomb dropped during
World War II. The house is restored, and it is full of peculiar children, who all have supernatural traits or abilities. Later on, he finds
that he is one of them and that they were constantly targeted by hollowgasts- the very same kind of monsters that killed his
grandfather.

Is his grandfather a peculiar too? What is the loop? You might want to read the book yourself to find out. Throughout the story,
Jacob faces danger, unexpected betrayals and uncovers new mysteries on perilous adventures together with his peculiar friends.
Every chapter of this book keeps me on the edge of my seat with curiosity and fear for what might happen to the characters. It is
possibly the strangest yet most unforgettable novel I have ever read and I definitely recommend it to those who are looking for
an action-packed, terrifying story which will keep you guessing as you read-especially to those who are already a fan of fantasy
novels such as Harry Potter and Percy Jackson.

Omniscient Rea
der’s Viewpoint

Liem Gabrielle Immanuela Kasih, Secondary 4 Equity

What is orv?

Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, or shortly ORV, is an apocalyptic fantasy fiction webnovel, written by author(s) under the pen
name Sing Shong. ORV is currently complete at 551 chapters, and currently has an in-progress webcomic of the same name
that’s in its early arcs.

What is it about?

ORV is about Kim Dokja, a 28-year old social maladroit who works for a gaming company and likes to spend all his free time
reading webnovels. He has been hyper-fixating on an extremely long, unpopular apocalyptic survival novel that has been running
for over a decade to the point that he became the only reader of the novel who’s still reading the ongoing 3000+ chapters as it
updates. The story begins when the author announces the end of the novel, or the epilogue where Kim Dokja suddenly receives a
text file of the entire novel from the author. At that moment, everything turns 360° when the real world merge with the events in
the novel which change the world into an apocalyptic world where Kim Dokja is now the only person who has inside knowledge
of what’s going on. To survive, he must make alliances with the ‘characters‘ from the original novel, and get through the survival
games in order to reach the unwritten epilogue.

W Why I like this book

I came across this piece of fiction on a whim – being under the ‘fantasy’ section inside the e-bookstore as we have all been
accustomed to seeing and checking out for new titles. The title itself was eye-catching; there were no other similarly named
books as one called “Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint”. Without a hint of its plot, I downloaded it and thus began my life-changing
experience of reading this novel.

First I was confused due to the various characters and the ‘incomplete’ translation in the first few chapters because it was
translated from Korean to English, but I persevered and fell in love with the depth of the character of Kim Dokja and his distinct
relationship with his companions, especially with Yoo Joonghyuk, the protagonist of the novel whom Kim Dokja deeply cares for.

3

Moreover, I also like how ORV does not have any romantic relationship within its main cast. The main relationships in orv are
platonic ones, and much of them is spent on ruminating on found families and rebuilding broken relationships, which is nice to
know since romance sometimes affects plot, especially when the novel has the fantasy genre.

My favorite thing from this novel is how the emotional core of the story is built upon the ambiguous relationships between the
trio that makes up the three main characters of the novel: Kim Dokja, Yoo Joonghyuk, and Han Sooyoung. Their interactions
make up the backbone of the story and they serve both as interesting individuals which piques my interest to continue reading
through the long 551 chapters.

B Why you should read it too
O
O ORV is a very fun book to read. It is quite heavy, and there are complex moments that happen throughout the story that might
K make you want to cry your eyes out, but it never gets bogged down in them, and it’s always a delight to just sit down with it.
There are lots of hilarious scenes that made me chuckle and wheezed loudly which makes up with the angst and tragedy that
occurred in the story. Additionally, the pacing of the story is super brisk, and so you’ll never feel like the book really overstays its
welcome on any particular arc. it’s why the book is so bingeable, despite its length.

I highly recommend this novel to you. If you’re interested, you can try reading the novel through various websites in Google,
and if you’re interested in reading the webcomic, do read it from Webtoon. You can download the app through the app store.

Wonder

Michael Poei, Secondary 4 Equity

Wonder is a book published on the 14th of February in 2012, the book has won many prestigious awards and is read by millions of
people worldwide. Its author, R. J. Palacio's Wonder was inspired to write the book Wonder after seeing her son crying after
noticing a girl with a severe facial deformity.

R This book teaches you that sometimes you don’t fit in and that’s fine. This lesson was demonstrated by the main character
E August who has a facial deformity. It also teaches the about friendship, shown by August’s friend Jack. In one part of the book,
V Jack punched a bully after he called August a “freak”.

In life, you will always have something different from your peers, that is what makes you unique. For August it is his facial
appearance that makes him unique from others after dozens of surgeries after birth to keep him alive. Throughout the book
August faced a lot of difficulties in his daily life. However, he stays strong and manages to complete elementary school.

Also this book teaches you about friendship. Before August joins elementary school, Jack is the high average kid who has a good
social life, hanging out with the popular kids and has good grades. However, when August joins elementary school, Jack
befriends August, one problem is that all the other kids are ostracising August for his appearance. Despite this, Jack sacrifices his
social life and sides with August, defending him which also leads him to get ostracised.

In conclusion, I think this book is a very popular book for a good reason. It teaches us very valuable life lessons. I bought the book
when I was in Grade Six, and recently rediscovered it. I really enjoyed it and ended up also buying the movie.

I P.S. There is one copy in the school library if you want to borrow it.

The Betrayal

Kearell Reinka Arman, Secondary 2 Enthuse

I ran towards the door with my backpack, still doubting my decision. I could feel my heart beating quickly. Once I reached the
door, I looked back. No one noticed, they were too occupied with that show they’ve repeated again and again. I sprinted down
the hill until I could no longer see the house. Without me realizing, it was already sunset, so I sat down and the rain started
pouring. It was gloomy, dark and I felt blue, but I reminded myself that it’s okay. I’m 16 and I can take care of myself. I’m better
off without them. Why did I do everything while they needed a break from a non-existence work? Well, the answer’s clear as
day, I was adopted.

Questions and worries filled my brain. But I was committed to one goal, to get on the road and start my own life. I suddenly
heard the loud noise of cars, and I had fallen asleep. I woke up and walked over the city looking for a job. I wasn’t sure which is
suitable for me so I applied to several different jobs and ended up with a cashier job as my only choice. I gave it a shot and
walked the dogs for extra cash. One thing roamed around my mind, today is the big stepping stone of my life.

Without me realizing, it has been three months since I left the house. I managed to make a few friends who helped me find an
estate and helped me through the real world. I do think of home sometimes, but I know this is for the best. Everything goes so
well and a lot have changed. I still work at the same restaurant but instead of being a cashier, I am now the Manager there and
made way more than I used to. But my family’s reaching out to me after such a long time though I proceed to ignore those and
move on.

Surprisingly, I am also a well-known dog trainer. I would’ve never thought of that. Not just talking about training dogs. Several
TV shows had invited me to demonstrate how I taught. Money is no longer a problem. I bought a more appropriate house for
myself and lived a happy life until one day, someone knocked on my door. I opened the door and it was my family looking filthy.
It hit me, me as they're source of money is no longer there. They saw me in TV shows and started looking for me. They begged
me to let them live with me, which I wouldn’t allow remembering what they did. But they started acting violent and yelled at
me for how I was ungrateful as they raised me. I gave them much more money than what they’ve used for me my whole life in
exchange for a promise where they will not bother me ever again.

Years go by and one day, I saw them on the side of the road homeless. I was hesitant to help but decided to. It didn’t feel great
cause they’re still my family, but I know for sure they’ve got what they deserved.

Sleep Paralysis

Maxell Fanson Suharsono, Secondary 3 Sagacious

My closed eyes opened to the dark ceiling. Nothing was going on until the lights flickered crimson red. After multiple flickers,
those lights turned on, fully on, in the colour of dirty blood. The colour shone on the white walls and ceiling tinting it dark
scarlet. I didn’t know what was happening until the moment I tried moving my head. It was locked still. Some force was
pushing every part of my body down whilst coils of it were tightening my limbs together.

Overwhelmed, I tried shouting for human help. It wasn’t for tetanus, but my jaw was locked in place. Demons from hell were
killing me and I might be the unlucky one to feel this torture.

Out of nowhere, a mysterious cloaked figure with a long, black, and overlapping robe stood in front of my bed as I forced my
eyeballs to look horizontally. I wasn’t able to see his eyes but his wide, clown smile haunts me till this day. My eyes strained to
much as I forced it to look down, owing to that I blinked. That blink had spawned another of the same man. Blinked again and
another came out. It stopped when they reached five. I was beyond terrified. Tried moving, tried screaming, but still, I was
stuck.

They hummed and chanted. Their hands move up and down. The curtains were waving along the whistling wind. The chanting
became louder when something behind their backs was shining brilliantly. It was my wooden Christ’s cross which was spewing
smoke like a coal power plant. The smoke was about to be my worst nightmare.

The ebony ashes accumulated on the ceiling. They started to crawl, and they literally, became crawlers; very small, tick-like
spiders, there were billions. Some dropped onto my face, some crawled down the walls then to my body. They were crawling
through my pyjamas, tickling me all over my body with their thin legs. I may not be able to move, but all my nerves were
tingling upon the arachnids’ pins. I tried to sedate myself by shutting my eyes hard as I thought the only thing I can stop myself
from sensing was sight.

The chants kept going, the smoke kept spewing, my eyelids were transparent. As the spiders crawled over my eyes, my vision
turned black. Despite the spiders and chants, the alcohol further paralysed me into deep sleep. Waking up from that phase was
the best feeling I have ever felt in a while.

Anxiety

Shadha Sausan, Secondary 2 Happiness

I stepped inside the classroom tugging on my uniform skirt, did it have to be so short? Why can't it at least conceal my knees? I
make eye contact with a girl and blood pulses in my ears. She gives me a small nod and turns to the girls she was talking to, I
walk back to the corner seat in the last row, comfortable. Laughter burst from their table and my hands turned white, are they
laughing at me? Do I look wrong? I looked down to check myself and make sure I didn't forget to put on any of my necessary
garments. They are there, maybe they weren't talking about me or maybe they were.

The deafening ring of the bell cut through my thoughts as the teacher's heels clacked into the room. She maintained a second of
eye contact with all of us and started reading the attendance. My name isn't first so it's not alphabetical, how will I reply to my
name? Do I say "Yes" or "Here" ? What if I sound weird saying that? should I just raise my hand? That will expose skin though.

"Rose Adams?" Silence.
"Rose Adams?" The voice sounded stern this time. My name wasn't Rose, it's Amelia Jude, I calmed myself just as the door
banged open, a girl, with frizzy red locks and startling green eyes, stood there, she gave a sheepish smile. "Rose," the teacher said
in an exasperated voice. "Traffic" she whined as she plopped herself next to me, my heartbeat rose, what will she think of me? Will
she think I'm a bore? But then again aren't I?

She turned to me. Shoot. I've been staring at her for a while, she scrunched her nose. My stomach dropped, do I have a bad
odour? Did she find me displeasing? My heart thumped.

"Amelia?" she asked,
"h-huh?"
"The teacher is calling for you" she whispered softly.
I jerked my head towards the teacher, she was scowling at me, "I-" all of the students were looking at me drilling holes into my
body, "Amelia" a hand patted my back, I turn my head to Rose, "Amelia is present," she said waving her hand. Relief surged
through my body, as the teacher went on calling names.

"Anxiety?" she asked grinning, I nodded meekly
"I had anxiety, quite rough eh?" she said patting my back
"I'm sticking with you from today, you seem fun," she said.
Acceptance? a lump formed in my throat, have I been accepted?
"I know how that feels," she said laughing, "Amelia," I said
"Rose, it's a pleasure Amel," she said laughing and not long after I joined her.

Berendah Hati

Lionel Jeffreyanto, Secondary 4 Equity

tertinggi dikelas. Sedangkan Supriadi mendapatkan nilai yang buruk. Sejak saat itu, Supriadi belajar untuk menjadi

Pantang Menyerah

Kayla Crystabell, Secondary 4 Equity

mencapai impian Anda.

Life is Not a Piece of Cake

Jennifer Caroline Wijaya, Secondary 4 Equity Soy Milke

Maxell Fanson Suharsono, Secondary 3
Sagacious
Entering the dark,

sitting at the park.
No one beside me, The soy milk is dangerously fetid
imagining the sea. It is just the skimmed but rancid

Smelling it, it was badly putrid
Walkin' on the sea, But to drink was demanded
Found the fight in me,

Tryin' to bring me down,
But I won’t drown. The fumes were stomach-churning
Like how a rollercoaster is nauseating

Wind blows my hair The reek truly wasn’t comforting
My nostrils both were clenching
in the open air,
as the sea wave The taste struck like lightning
feeling a little brave. And it was eternally enduring

As I see from far away, That was like bad vodka
feeling the braveness
inside my deep heart Or spit from a llama
it kind of made my day. It sizzled my throat like soda

I pray to my Mama
As the day turns dark, I won’t get a mouth carcinoma
there seems to be a mark.
Turns out my visions are fake,

life is not a piece of cake.

The Flower that Held Power

Isabella S. Sudarmanto, Secondary 1 Joy

The flower was planted,
In hopes that it would become pretty. But this

flower had a different plan.
It didn’t want to be taken for granted.
This plan was witty, Something to be proud of.
Although it was scared, it stayed different.

It had petals.
They were different, But i would say that,
They were the most magnificent. These petals

could win medals.

Every petal that fell, Another flower bloomed.
They were unique, Anyone could tell.
No one could critique.
When the flower wilted,

The earth had already been consumed, By
flowers that had bloomed.

With that flower’s brave choice, The uniqueness
of each flower, Would be rejoiced.
A choice that held a lot of power.

POEMS IN BAHASA INDOENSIA

Moreno Bertinuz Danuwidjaja, Secondary 4 Equity Rintik hujan

Liem Gabrielle Immanuela Kasih, Secondary 4
Februari Equity

Ada yang pergi diam-diam
Merobohkan jam malam “Tik, tik” suara rintik air hujan
Merahasiakan dendam Jatuh ke tanah membuat air menggenang
Langkah kakiku membuat bunyi percikan air
Aku terseok-seok di balik pintu Memunguti sisa-sisa
waktuku Suara yang ingin kukenang

Warna Tanpa kata tanpa nada
Rintik hujan pun menafsirkan kedamaian Hanya
Warna siapa membentur Di ujung pikiran itu
Noktah merah bercucuri rasa hanya prasangka
Tanpa niat bergugur Yang terdengar di dalam dialog hujan demikian
Dalam surat wasiat itu

Tenang, musim hujan belum pergi
Tersesat Memberi waktu kita sejenak bernapas
Mengingat memori untuk bisa lari lagi
Malam tenggelam Mengenang rintik hujan sebelum kalas
Diaduk dalam api secawan Tersaji rupa

Melintas tanpa tuntas
Di sela gigil

Ada yang memanggil
Saatnya nostalgia purba
Aku hilang terima kasih Tuhan

FROM THE DESK OF THE ADVISER

The final issue of Metamorphosis for this academic year takes a turn from its usual content to give way to the
Literary Folio edition which is a novel showcase of the staff’s creative writing skills. Keeping our readers’ interest
in mind, here we offer an exquisite fusion of book reviews, short stories and poems in English, Chinese and
Bahasa Indonesia. We thought the humanizing appeal and impact of these genres best complement the timing
of the season, that is, the time of the year when everyone’s hard work turns into fruition.
In this concluding piece for 2021-2022, I take the opportunity to thank the YJC members, Mr Dave as Co-Adviser
and Mr. Yassin and Ms. Feng as Editors for their dedication without which our success would not have been
possible. My appreciation also goes to Ms Karilta and Mr Barin for generously sharing their skills in graphic design,
yes, they are the ones responsible for the creative aspects of our issues. I marvel at the group’s spirit of teamwork,
that despite the hurdles of the online setting we managed to pull through and emerge even stronger.
Let me also make a pitch for next academic year for those of you who would like to join YJC and learn about the
world of print publication. It is an experience which will not only develop your journalistic writing skills but will
also help develop your social and leadership skills. I look forward to having you in the team.
So as you leaf through the pages of this Literary Folio, it is my fervent prayer that you will find the articles a
delight and something that inspires you to read more. Thank you, our dear readers, you are a part of the journey
of YJC.
Cheers and God bless you all!
Mr Geruel de Ramos Rivadeneira
