The Little Book
of Kensington Wade

Equipping the Future Generation

Message from the Head

Dear Parents,
This book is designed to provide useful information
that will help you and your child settle in to life at
Kensington Wade. Starting a new school is a very ex-
citing, but sometimes anxious, time for parents and
we want to make the transition as smooth as possible.
From information on what happens on the first day of
term to an A to Z of school life, and useful advice on
what to do over the summer holiday to prepare for the
excitements ahead, the following pages are packed
with advice and information.
Kensington Wade staff are committed to creating a
warm, nurturing environment with a strong sense
of community where pupils and their families feel
respected, safe and welcome. All teaching staff are
highly caring, professional and experienced in mak-
ing these early school days as smooth as possible. If
in doubt, please ask the school for advice – we will be
more than happy to give it.
We look forward to a won-
derful year where we work in
strong partnership with you to
provide the best educational
experience for your child.

Arrivals and Departures

Kensington Wade encourages every child to arrive
by an environmentally friendly mode of transport,
such as walking, scooting, cycling or bus. This not
only supports the environment, but promotes a
healthy lifestyle. If you have to travel by car, please
note that there are no parking facilities available on
site, however there are Pay and Display bays near
the junction of Russell Road and Kensington High
Street.
We will be continuing to not allow scooters and
bicycles to be parked in the playground from
September until government guidance changes.
Instead we would encourage parents to take these
with them and bring them back if you wish your
child to use one. There are some bicycle stands
outside of the school which could be used for
chaining bicycles to if necessary.

Extra-Curricular Clubs

Following government guidelines that children should remain in
their yeargroup “bubbles” throughout the school day and avoid
vertically-grouped classes and activities, the extra-curricular club
schedule has been altered for the 2020/21 academic year. Please
see the correspondence from the school office for the latest
update.

After-School Care

For children aged 4 and above, there will be shared provision
with Kensington Primary Academy until 6:15. Parents need to be
aware that this after school care will work as an additional support
‘bubble’. After School Care will run from 3pm - 6.15pm and sessions
must be booked in advance via the online portal. Please contact
‘The Club’ by email to register: [email protected]

Emergency arrangements

We will always endeavour to open the school, but in cases of
severe bad weather that may affect our essential services, closure
may be unavoidable. If the school will remain closed then these
details will be broadcast via email from approximately 7.00am
onwards.
If school closure is announced during the day due to severe
weather conditions, every effort must be taken to collect your
child as soon as possible. If you personally cannot get to school,
or you work out of the local area, please have a contingency plan,
such as nominating a responsible adult to collect your child in
your absence.

09

Attendance, absence & holidays

Kensington Wade expects children to attend on time every
day in order for them to make progress in their learning. We
also understand that children fall ill and absences are at times
unavoidable. When children are absent from school, we are legally
required to record reasons for absence. Please inform the office on
your child’s first day of absence by emailing or calling before 08:25.
If your child has a sickness or tummy bug, we ask that they stay off
school for 48 hours after their last bout. Upon return, please email
confirmation of the dates and cause of absence on your child’s
return. If your child is ill or has a medical appointment, please
notify the school via email as soon as possible.
All school holiday dates are published to parents and advertised
on our website one year in advance. Any requests for authorisation
of holiday within term time, must be made to the Head. Please
ensure that you have written permission before booking any
holidays in order to avoid disappointment or additional costs.

their name. Kensington Wade cannot be held responsible for any
personal belongings brought into the school

Spare items of clothing for younger children

Please ensure that you send your child with some spare clothes for
them to change into in case of any accidents.

14

Lunch, water and snacks

School meals are catered for by Harrison Catering.
For morning break, we ask you to provide your
child with a healthy, nut-free snack and a bottle of
water. Please ensure snacks are provided within
an airtight container and items are clearly labelled
with your child’s name.
Children will eat their lunch together in their
classroom, due to the current setup of yeargroup
support bubbles.
Birthday cakes - We are very happy for your child
to bring small cakes to school to share with their
friends on their birthday.

Please note that we are a nut free school.

15

16

Health

We have a list of children with specific medical conditions,
however please keep us updated if your child has a health issue,
however small, or suffers from an allergy, by completing the
Medical Health Form provided. If they require medication, e.g.
inhaler or EpiPen, we need two sets of named medication in
school, one for the classroom and one for the School Office. The
medication provided must be in its original packaging with the
prescription label attached detailing the dose and frequency
allowed.

Illness/accidents

If your child is ill whilst at school, or involved in an accident, we
will attempt to contact you immediately. Parents are required
to complete the ‘Emergency Contact’ section on the Permissions
Form. This is to ensure the school has up to date information
to contact the appropriate person in an emergency. Parents are
required to provide updates when those contact details change.

17

Parental help

We always value parent help at various events and on trips. If you
would like to become a parent volunteer, please contact the School
Office about attending a training session.

Pupil Progress Meetings

We hold Pupil Progress Meetings in Autumn, Spring and Summer
Terms. Each appointment is for 15 minutes to discuss your child’s
progress.

Communication

Newsletters are sent via email every Friday. Please return any
replies directly to the office via email. Please also check your
child’s bag every day for any other notices or letters from staff.
Kensington Wade is committed to its open door policy and
welcomes your contact at any time during school hours. Brief
informative notes can be written in your child’s reading record or
via email. More serious concerns are better discussed in person,
so please request a meeting time with the appropriate member of
staff. Please note that urgent information is best communicated
by calling or emailing the school office.

18

Sport

Kensington Wade encourages children to be
physically active for sustained periods of time,
to lead healthy and active lives and to engage
in competitive sports and activities. We engage
in physical activity throughout the year, with
swimming (Reception upwards), P.E. Lessons,
active assemblies, and extra-curricular activities.

Music

Music is important to us and we have a specialist
music teacher. Music is in two specialist lessons
each week. Music will also be taught in assemblies
and extra-curricular clubs later in the year, when
those are running.

Reading Books

Supporting your child’s reading is one of the most
important ways to support their learning. Your
child will need to bring their reading books and
reading diary into school every day. Please make
a note of when they read to you in their reading
diary and any relevant comments. Every Friday,
your child will bring home new reading books.

19

20

School Policies

For Kensington Wade to offer high quality education and care, we
need to have policies. Policies help to develop and define a set of
consistent rules, regulations, procedures and protocols and help
us to create standards of quality for learning and safety, as well as
expectations and accountability. Relevant policies are accessible
via the website, at www.kensingtonwade.com/about-us/school-
policies/. Other specific policies can be requested via the staff
office.

Code of conduct

Good behaviour and discipline are key foundations for a good
education. We expect and insist on the highest standards of
behaviour throughout our school.

How pupils should behave and treat each other?

• Use words that will not make others feel unhappy
• Be aware of the feelings of others
• Be kind and positive
• Offer friendship to anyone who is unhappy
• Respect differences in each other
• Respect the privacy of others
• Look after your own belongings
• Do not hurt others
• Walk (not run) when moving around the school
• Wear the correct school uniform

21

Rewards and sanctions

We believe that the best way to make sure that pupils learn and
that the highest standards of behaviour and work are reached is by
creating a positive atmosphere with regular praise, congratulation
and celebration. Being positive increases good behaviour so
that good teaching and learning is possible and poor behaviour,
which gets in the way of good teaching and learning, is less likely.
It is therefore our goal that there should be more rewards than
sanctions.

Rewards in Class:

All teachers use the same system and make sure that the pupils
understand the rewards for good behaviour/effort.
These could include:
• Verbal praise
• Reading work aloud to other pupils
• Stickers/smiley faces on their work
• Awarding of House Points
• Notes home in their school diary/reading bag
• Special rewards

Complaints

Kensington Wade welcomes suggestions and comments from
parents, and takes seriously concerns or complaints which may
arise, as they can help us to improve the educational experience
that we provide. The complaints policy is available on the
Kensington Wade website.
If you wish to make a complaint or have a serious concern about
your child’s school, please contact Ofsted at [email protected].

22
