(P1-P2) How to QC Screens

(P1-P2) How to QC Screens

Projection Screen Care & Maintenance

(All front & rear projection vinyl material surfaces and all frame parts)

HOW TO “QC” SCREENS-

1) Unfold screen on a clean, debris free surface. If working on a table,
unfold screen in layers.

2) Inspect screen for any damage; first to the screen, then to the border.
Holes or cuts to the screen cannot be repaired and need to be reported
and written up on a “Client Damage Order”.

3) Any marks on the screen need to be cleaned off; any damage to the
snaps need to be repaired or replaced.

4) To clean any screen, follow these directions from Draper: “gently clean
the projection material with a diluted solution of mild dishwashing
liquid and warm water. A 30/70 mix of Simple Green® All- Purpose
Cleaner and water may also be used. Using a soft, disposable cloth,
gently wipe the surface, completely rinse the entire surface with
clear water and blot dry. Do not allow any cleaner to be absorbed by
the fabric. Do not use cleaners which contain abrasives or wax. Do
not use Armor All®”.

5) If whatever mark you’re trying to remove does not come off, then use the
following cleaners in this order until you find one that works: Full strength
Simple Green, Denatured Alcohol, Stoner Plastic Cleaner Aerosol,
Ronsonol Lighter Fluid. If nothing else works, only then should you use
the following cleaners: Mineral Spirits, Orange Citrus cleaners, or Goof-
Off. If left on too long, or rubbed in too hard, these will likely remove a
layer of material, creating a spot that will be visible when a projected
image is put on it. This will be seen as a “hot spot”. This is bad!!! It is
also another reason that the entire screen needs to be cleaned; to prevent
hot spots from standing out. In other words, DO NOT SPOT CLEAN;
clean the entire surface, both sides.

6) Fold screen properly to allow it to fit back into the pouch it came in.
Screen is folded much like you would a bed sheet. Fold the top border to
the bottom border, keeping the audience side of the screen on the inside
of the fold. Next, follow the same pattern but do not allow the screen to
touch the border; just go to the edge of the border. If you lay the screen
on the border snaps, the screen will be damaged. When it is folded to a
width that allows it to fit in the pouch, fold it the opposite way, end to end,
never letting the border touch the screen. Keep folding it the same
way until you have a size that will fit into the pouch.

7) Put the screen in the pouch. Mark the pouch with Gaffer’s tape, noting
the size and type of screen that is inside, on a P-Touch label.

8) When you finish with the second screen (all kits take front & rear), you must
QC the frame parts.

9) Remove all parts of the frame from the case and lay on a workbench.
10) Inspect each part for damage. Look for broken hinges, missing snaps,

dents, missing springs, broken or missing rivets, damaged rivcups, etc.
11) Inspect each part for functionality. Unfold hinged pieces to ensure that

the hinges or locking latches work. Move part around and listen for loose
pieces of metal that may have fallen into the frame. These could come
out and damage the screen.
12) Remove all Velcro, tape, or foreign markings. There should be no type of
residue on the frame parts, as it could transfer onto the screen.
13) Put all pieces back into the proper case, with as many barcodes showing
as possible. Make sure that the screens are on top of the frame pieces,
separated by a plastic divider.
14) Ensure that there are enough cranks, bag them and place in the case.
15) Close the lid, replace any damaged or missing straps, make sure the
case is labeled with type and size, and put a QC sticker on it, with the
date and your initials.
16) You are now done.
