CARPATHO-RUTHENIANS IN AMERICA
Late in the nineteenth century, a familiar pattern of emigration developed
among the impoverished young farmers and laborers in the deep valleys and
adjacent lowlands at the eastern end of the Carpathian mountains-a region
known variously as Carpatho-Ruthenia, Subcarpathian-Rus', Carpatho-
Ukraine, or Carpatho-Russia, which at the time was within the old Austro-
Hungarian Empire . Several hundred thousands eventually found their way to
the United States and settled largely in the industrial belt which stretched
from southern New England and New York through northern New Jersey and
Pennsylvania into northern Ohio . Their exact number will never be known
owing to indifferent record-keeping and to political divisions in Europe which
bore little relation to ethnolinguistic boundaries . Toward the end of World
War I, an event marking the end of their mass migration to the United States,
they played a major role in creating a Carpatho-Ruthenian region within the
new Czechoslovak Republic, a territory which became part of the Soviet
Ukraine in 1945 .
The ethnic identity and history of Carpatho-Ruthenians in America are
intertwined with fraternal organizations and, above all, with churches centered
in western Pennsylvania. The Greek Catholic Union attracted the largest
number and exercised the greatest influence among the fraternal insurance
brotherhoods, but Carpatho-Ruthenians founded or played a role also in the
United Russian Orthodox Brotherhood in America, the United Societies, the
Russian Brotherhood Organization, the Russian Orthodox Mutual Aid
Society, the Liberty Association, and others . They affiliated with several
churches, principally the Byzantine Rite Catholic Archdiocese, the Russian
Orthodox Church (now part of the Orthodox Church in America), the
American Carpatho-Russian Greek Catholic Diocese, and in lesser number
with the Latin and Ukrainian Catholic rites and various Protestant churches .
The press created by Carpatho-Ruthenians mirrored their experience in
America . Beginning with Amerikansky Russky Viestnik in 1892, it has in-
cluded 15 daily and weekly newspapers, some 40 journals, and 10 or more
yearly almanacs . It is a world in print which at once mirrored and was part of
the landscape of the Carpatho-Ruthenian ethnic community-its personal
tastes and values, linguistic variety and literary achievement, ideological and
religious conflicts, work and economic structure, and rising tide of ethnic
self-consciousness . Whatever the point of view, the press served a broadly
educational and improving function, encouraging an outlook which trans-
cended old village or regional loyalties . Slowly-noticeably in the late 1930s
and 1940s-it adopted the language and techniques of American journalism,
appealing in English to special tastes with women's and sports sections, intro-
ducing cartoons and comic strips, shifting from emigrant traveloriented
advertising to a broader range of goods and services for the second and third
generations .
The Carpatho-Ruthenian Microfilm Project
Yet, ninety years after its beginning, the story of the Carpatho-Ruthenian
immigration remained little known outside the community ; the extraordinary
resources represented by the Carpatho-Ruthenian press were accessible to
only a few hardy specialists. To help remedy this deficiency, the Byzantine
Ruthenian Metropolitan Province and the Immigration History Research
Center at the University of Minnesota joined forces in 1975 to locate and
microfilm all existing newspapers and serials which bore directly on the
Carpatho-Ruthenian community . A gift of $12,500 from the Byzantine Rite
Province was matched by the National Endowment for the Humanities ; a
project coordinator at the Center and a small advisory committee of specialists
were appointed ; and the search for materials was begun. Within two years,
about 60 titles were located and filmed . The search continues, of course, and
anyone with knowledge of relevant material is asked to contact the IHRC
(826 Berry Street, St. Paul, Minnesota 55114 ; telephone : 612-878-5581) .
In 1976, the emphasis of the Carpatho-Ruthenian Microfilm Project
shifted to improving access to the microfilm collection . With continuing
grants from the Byzantine Rite Archdiocese and the Greek Catholic Union,
1

the Project began to create a subject index for one of the most important
Carpatho-Ruthenian publications in America, the Amerikansky Russky
Viestnik . The initial result is the Guide to Amerikansky Russky Viestnik,
Volume 1 : 1894-1914, compiled by James Evans (Fairview, NJ . : Carpatho-
Rusyn Research Center, 1979) .
Use of this Guide
Each of the citations in this guide includes the following information :
the most recent title, place(s) of publication, publisher(s), dates of publica-
tion, frequency, and microfilm holdings with locations . In a few instances not
all pertinent information could be ascertained and occasional missing issues
in the film are not noted . Individual titles are given in the language in which
they appear on the masthead : Carpatho-Ruthenian, English, Russian, or
Ukrainian . Transliterations given by the publications themselves are used ;
if none are available the Library of Congress transliteration system is used .
Access to the Microfilm
The Immigration History Research Center holds a positive copy of all
microfilms in the Project . However, the Center lends on interlibrary loan only
those titles for which it has both a negative and a positive copy . In cases
where the citation in this guide indicates ownership of the master negative as
other than the Immigration History Research Center (MnUI), interlibrary loan
requests should be sent directly to the designated institution . Most of the
master negatives created by the Project are located at the Center for Research
Libraries, 5721 Cottage Grove Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60637 . The Center
for Research Libraries lends positive copies of microfilms on interlibrary loan
to its member institutions and offers them' for sale to the general public, Posi-
tive copies of all the microfilms in this guide have been deposited in the John
Carroll University Library, Cleveland, Ohio ; the Slavonic Division of the New
York Public Library ; and the University of Pittsburgh Library .

Diocese of Passaic ; and Most Rev. Emil J . Mihalik, Bishop of the

CONTRIBUTORS
The Carpatho-Ruthenian Microfilm Project is indebted to two institutions for
basic financial support . The Project was initiated by a gift of $12,500 from
the Byzantine Rite Province-Most Rev . Stephen J . Kocisko, Metropolitan
and Archbishop of Pittsburgh ; Most Rev . Michael J . Dudick, Bishop of the
Byzantine Catholic Diocese of Passaic ; Most Rev. Emil J . Mihalik, Bishop of
the Byzantine Catholic Diocese of Parrna ; Most Rev. John M . Bilock, Auxil-
iary Bishop of Pittsburgh . The National Endowment for the Humanities
matched this gift through a grant to the Immigration History Research Center
of the University of Minnesota . A second grant for 1977-1978 has been pro-
vided by the Greek Catholic Union through the auspices of the Byzantine
Rite Archbishop .
The committee of specialists, which guided the project overall, suggested
priorities, and assisted in the location of material, included Dr . Paul R . Magocsi
and Mr . Edward Kasinec of the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute ; Rev .
Athanasius Pekar, OSBM, of SS . Cyril and Methodius Seminary, Pittsburgh ;
Rev . Stephen Veselenak, OSB, St . Nicholas Church, McKeesport, Pa . ; and
Msgr . Robert Moneta, editor of Eastern Catholic Life. Dr. Frank Renkieivicz,
Research Associate at the Immigration History Research Center, served as
project coordinator.
Individuals and institutions throughout the United States freely lent
materials for microfilm . The collections of the Byzantine Rite Province at
the episcopal residence and chancery in Pittsburgh, at Holy Trinity Monastery
in Butler, Pa., and at the office of Eastern Catholic Life gave the Project a
strong start . The American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic
Diocese contributed important files from its cathedral office through the
courtesy of its chancellor, Msgr . John Yurcisin, and from the library of Christ
the Savior Seminary, Rev . James Dutko, rector . Msgr . Basil Shereghy opened
important doors at the United Societies besides lending dozens of volumes
from his personal collection. Mr . Michael Roman, editor of the GCU
Messenger, made available the publications of the Greek Catholic Union, and
Mr. George Batyko, the Union's president, provided indispensable support .
Mr. Basil Homick of the Russian Orthodox Catholic Mutual Aid Society,
Mr . Stephen Gladis of the "Liberty" Association, and Mr . Michael Logoyda
of the Lemko Association granted access to their organizations' publications .
The late Msgr. John Kallock of Minneapolis, Mr . William Racin of Hollywood,
Florida, Dr. Vincent Shandor of Paterson, New Jersey, and Mr . Ladislav
Fedinec of Miami, Florida each lent files of publications with which they had
been associated . Mr . Basil Nadraga searched and arranged for filming relevant
materials in the Library of Congress, tasks also carried out at their respective
institutions by Mr . John Baker, Chief of the Conservation Department at the
New York Public Library ; Mr . Charles Elston of the Newspaper Division at
the University of Illinois Library in Champaign-Urbana ; Mr . Ray Boylan at
the Center for Research Libraries ; Rev . Vitus Buresh at the Benedictine
College in Lisle, Illinois ; Miss Ethel Robinson at the Cleveland Public Library ;
Mr . Charles Credler at Harvard College Library ; and the staff at the Hoover
Institution, Stanford University .
