L’dor V’dor:

New Frontiers on Heredity and Healing

With Cantor Jessica Turnoff Ferrari

Thursday evenings - 7:00pm
April 20 & 27 and May 4

Did you hear about the Jewish woman who always cut the ends of her roast
off before she cooked it? Her husband asked her why she wasted so much
meat, and she said because that’s how her mother always did it. She asked her
mother why. Her mother didn’t know—she said her mother always cut the
ends off the roast, so that’s how she learned to do it. The woman eventually
asked her grandmother, “Why do we always cut the ends off the roast?” Her
grandmother said, “Because I never had a big enough pan.”
As Jews, we value passing on the blessings and teachings of our heritage.
This class will explore the benefits of these blessings as well as implications
of new research which indicates that children of holocaust survivors have
biological markers for trauma, even though they did not experience the
trauma in their own lives. What struggles, idiosyncrasies, and genetic markers
might also be passed from generation to generation? We will also consider
emerging ways of bringing healing to our lineage.

1ST NIGHT PASSOVER SEDER

by Carol Sleeper

It takes a village or in this case a community to be able to host over 275 people for our 1st Night Passover Seder.
Congregants, family, friends, and guests joined us in our newly renovated Social Halls as our clergy presented an
interactive Service utilizing the Temple Beth Am Haggadah and the new drop down screens. First time visitors
mentioned that it was the best Passover Seder they had ever been to and were grateful to have been part of the
evening.

The Passover Committee (Chef Eric Weiner, Bruce Cohen, Nanci Hochman, Leona Holland, CK
Tenenbaum, Arline Slifkin and myself) with much assistance planned the logistics of the evening and helped
prepare the delicious meal. Chef Eric was as amazing as usual and got some culinary help from Sandra Weiner,
Brett Tancer, Mark Slifkin, Gali Levkovitz, Shaun Boyes, Amanda Boyes, Mel Wolfe, Ben Levkovitz, Bruce
Cohen, Jack Tenenbaum, CK Tenenbaum, Leona Holland, Ron Holland, Margorie Nagrotsky and Temple
staff who stopped in the kitchen and said, “How can we help?”

We asked for volunteers for the day of to help set up the rooms and Lisa Blatt, Phyllis Cohen, Toby Dubov,
Gayle Laurene and Carole Meshil really stepped up. Any Temple staff person who was in the building was called
on for support from making place cards, cutting out plague cards, plating gefilte fish (nobody wanted to do that
one), making table center pieces, whatever was asked they helped make happen.

During the food service, Ralph Van Baalen, Nada Imbriale, Lisa Blatt and Keren Blatt stopped being guests
and jumped in to help make sure that the food went out promptly.

If I have forgotten anyone it is not intentional and definitely was not because it wasn’t appreciated. As I said earlier
sometimes it takes a community pulling together to make for an unforgettable evening. Thank you to everyone who
made our 1st Night Seder so very special.

volunteers but also a special thank you to Lisa Blatt.
Lisa began volunteering over a year ago and is always
there and always ready to lend a hand. Lisa's husband
and children also help out when they can. WE could
NOT run the successful soup kitchen without members
like Lisa.
We are ALWAYS in need of new volunteers. If you
can't volunteer on a Monday evening but would like to
help, PLEASE drop off boxes of penne pasta or elbow
macaroni (no substitutions) to the Temple.
If you would like to volunteer,
contact Lauren Weinstein at [email protected] or
Eric Weiner at [email protected].
Our next Soup Kitchen night at St. George’s will be

Many have asked for the recipe of the noodle kugel that was served
during some of the Onegs on Friday night and at The Man of the
Year celebration in honor of Mark Slifkin. This is a Slifkin family

of the congregation, just in time for Shavuot.

Finals & Exams are here! As a parent, how can you help?

What influences a child's stress tolerance level?

Support Network - A student feeling overwhelmed by
exams will have a better reaction to stress if they receive
support from parents or other caring adults.
Sense of Control - Having a sense of what to expect on
exam day, what to learn and ways to effectively organize
will help students control and manage their exam stress.
Positive Attitude and Outlook - Seeing the bright side,
to laugh at themselves and to appreciate the positives in
life will allow students to overcome their stress levels.
Preparation - The more a young person prepares for a
stressful situation, such as an exam, the easier it is to
cope. A student's stress level is often influenced by the
amount of preparation and planning they have put into
studying towards a particular exam and how confident
they feel about the material they are to be tested on.

What can parents do about exam stress?

One of the best things parents can do if their child is experiencing exam stress is to try to be
as supportive and tolerant as possible. Parents can help reduce the exam stress of their child
by helping them establish effective study and learning habits:
• Help your child find a quiet place to study without distractions.
• Encourage your child to find out exactly what the test involves - are there past test papers

they can look at to help them understand what to expect?
• Help them to make 'mind maps' to collect ideas and summarize thoughts - use bright

colors to help remember important links. This will allow their study load to seem less
intimidating.
• Help them to plan their schedule early on so they have sufficient time to study. It can be
helpful to develop a clear, realistic plan of what they want to cover in each study session.
Can they break it down into small chunks?
• Remind your child to take a short rest and move around in between their study sessions.
• Offer help sometimes. It can be useful having someone to listen or practice with.

Good Luck, Students! Remember: We are here for you!
