BLEND OF TWO CULTURES

1

BUDDHIST CULTURE

A Tibetan Prayer Flag is a colorful

rectangular cloth, often found strung along
trails and peaks high in the Himalayas. They
are used to bless the surrounding
countryside and for other purposes. Prayer
flags are believed to have originated with
Bon. The are always arranged in a specific
order, from left to right: blue, white, red,
green, yellow. Blue represents the sky, white
represents the air, red symbolizes fire, green
symbolizes water, and yellow symbolizes
earth. All five colours together signify
balance.
Sutras: These are prose often found on
prayer flags in medium to short versions. A
type of sutra is the dharani, said to contain
magical writings that can influence the mind.
Prayers: Buddhist prayers are also
commonly found on prayer flags written by
Buddhist leaders over the course of history.

The Laughing Buddha is a symbol of

happiness, contentment and prosperity.
Hotei or Pu-Tai is better known as the
Laughing Buddha.
The image of Hotei is based
on a Chinese Zen monk who lived over 1000
years ago. Many regarded him a future
Buddha because of his benevolent nature. It
was due to his large protruding stomach and
smile that he came to be known as the
Laughing Buddha.

His image graces many temples, restaurants
and homes in China and Japan. Legend has it
that if one rubs the Laughing Buddha’s great
belly, it brings wealth, good luck and
prosperity.

Mandala painting is a symbolic picture

of the universe, the circle that represents
wholeness, totality, infinity, timelessness,
and unity. Mandalas are Buddhist devotional
images often deemed a diagram or symbol of
an ideal universe.
Mandalas come in many forms.
Traditionally, a mandala is a geometric
design or pattern that represents the cosmos
or deities in various heavenly worlds.
Mandala is a symbol of the universe in its
ideal form, and its creation signifies the
transformation of a universe of suffering into
one of joy.
It can also be used as an aid to meditation,
helping the meditator to envision how to
achieve the perfect self.
Mandalas were created in the service of one
of the world's great religions, Buddhism.

TURKISH CULTURE

Hot Air Balloon Festival starts with

international folklore performances of
folklore groups from Georgia, 160 daily
balloons in the morning, 4 morning sessions
and 2 evening sessions, as well as 20-figure
colorful hot air balloons in the evening with
special shaped balloons and night glow
show concerts to do. During this airborne
spectacle, 150 hot-air balloons, including
more than 20 specially shaped varieties can
be seen , and a night-glow show that takes
place after dark. Cappadocia is probably the
only place in the world where you’ll see
hundreds of hot-air balloons dotting the
skies at sunrise, for most of the year. It’s
quite normal for balloons to fly 250 days a
year, whereas the norm elsewhere in Europe
is just 60.

Turkish Rugs & Carpets are four

basic types of Turkish rugs: Hali, Kilim,
Cicim and Sumak. The Hali is a thicker rug,
but the other three are all flat weaves made
without knots. They are often used as wall
hangings and smaller rugs.
Turkish carpets are famous for their
beautiful and complex patterns and rich,
naturally-dyed colors. They come in various
forms: “nomadic” or “tribal” rugs (knotted
pile) kilims (flat-woven rugs), cicims
(embroidered rugs), angora goat hair rugs,
sumaks (kilims that have been hand
embroidered to enhance their patterns),
prayer and cushion covers. Kilims can be
placed on walls or on the floors. They are
associated with Turkey but are produced in
Pakistan, India and other places. Sumaks
are often used as covers or blankets.
