Building Up, Reaching Out
Vision. Possibility. Opportunity. Vitality. Spirituality. Energy. Joy. These
are words I would use to describe the Building Up, Reaching Out
campaign. I am immensely grateful for those who went before us who
envisioned, first, Covenant Hall and then, our Sanctuary. Worship,
fellowship, ministry, encouragement, support and love flow through our
building each week.
Pastor Jill Kirchner-Rose The time has now come to begin a third phase. By creating adequate
space for children, youth, families, and community members, we expand
our vital ministry of sharing God’s radically inclusive love for all. Redlands
United Church of Christ is a mission station for those who are seeking to
grow, to learn, to love, to heal. As we build up, we reach out in service to
the many who come through our doors. I am deeply grateful to be on this
journey with such a spirit-filled congregation!
Why build?
Our church is healthy and growing. We are seeing more and more children in church each week, and
recognize that to be as welcoming as possible to them and their young families we need better
classroom and youth facilities than we have today.
We also have increasing needs for education space for
older populations, from youth and young adults all
the way through seniors. We are life-long learners,
and wish to have a facility that accommodates all who
call RUCC home.
Currently, our education space is effectively just a
“one room schoolhouse” in the space between
Covenant Hall and the office. This space has many
challenges, including:
• Walk-through traffic Susi and her Sunday School class
• Poor noise isolation from Covenant Hall
• Lack of whiteboards and A/V equipment
• No space for kids to call their own
In July 2016, we launched a
visioning process to gather
input, not just about the needs
for education space, but to
really look holistically at all the
space in our church. That
visioning process identified
“must-have” and “nice-to-have”
requirements that we have
since used to guide our designs.

Our new building and the enhancements to our
current space will position us for growth and the
continuing “radical welcome” that has become
the hallmark of Redlands UCC. We will have:
• A nursery
• Three classrooms for 10+ students each
• A youth room for 20 youth
• A large, multi-purpose room for 25+
• Restrooms that better meet the needs of
our congregation and visitors
• Office space for staff beyond the Pastor
• A new atrium to Covenant Hall

Summary building plan
We are building for our future in four areas:
• A new education wing adjacent to the north wall of the sanctuary
• Reconfiguration of the existing CE area to make two classrooms and a nursery
• A new Covenant Hall atrium to replace the leaking curved glass we have today
• Reconfiguration of our existing restrooms, specific plan to be determined
We plan to raise $777,000 to take this next step in the life of our church. Our aim is to start
construction in January 2018 and finish in 5-6 months. See the following sections for the cost
breakdown and detailed schedule

Reconfiguration of our existing restrooms
The building committee has been looking at ideas that will allow our restrooms to work better for
people for whom our current design poses a challenge. Some of the people we have been considering
are:
• handicapped people
• young parents who want to bring kids into the restroom with them
• elders and other adults who need assistance
• people who are uncomfortable sharing a facility with those of the opposite sex
• transgender, gender-ambiguous, or gender-fluid people
Features that will help us be welcoming include ADA-compliance, a room large enough to be a “family”
facility, some completely private, unisex restrooms, and adult and child changing areas.
We are seeking feedback from the congregation on the ideas outlined below and sketched on the
facing page. Please share your thoughts with any member of the building committee, or attend one of
the discussion forums planned after church on June 25 and July 9.
