Junior Sailing Code of Conduct

Youth Sailing Program Mission Statement: The mission of the Lauderdale Yacht Club Youth Sailing Program
is to promote and teach the sport of sailing and seamanship to the youth of the Club and community. In addition
to teaching sailing skills, the program emphasizes sportsmanship, life skills, teamwork, and an appreciation for
fair competition between peers. Those participants dedicated to the program will have experiences that will
benefit them for a lifetime. All the LYC instructors will share their knowledge and experience through a
structured curriculum.

As a nationally recognized leader in the sport of sailing, the LYC expects all program participants to conduct

themselves appropriately at all times and to follow the following Code of Conduct:
Respect For Others – I will respect the rights, dignity and self-worth of every individual. I will act honorably

and will not lie, cheat or steal (or borrow without permission). I will encourage my fellow junior sailors to

display the same qualities, and I will report those who do not respond appropriately to my encouragement to my

coach/instructor.
Professional Conduct – I will work proactively to achieve my full potential. I will trust that my
coaches/instructors have my best long‐term interest at heart, and I will willingly comply with their direction.
Personal Conduct – I will conduct myself professionally and accept responsibility for my actions. I will

display high standards in my language, manner, punctuality, preparation and presentation. I will display self-
control, courtesy, respect, honesty, dignity and professionalism. I will refrain from criticizing others– this

includes my interactions with opponents, coaches, officials, administrators, parents and spectators.
Good Sportsmanship/Corinthian Spirit – I will continually strive to demonstrate good sportsmanship, both

on and off the water. I will place winning in the context of good sportsmanship and fair play. (Remember Paul
Elvstrom’s quote: "You haven't won the race, if in winning the race you have lost the respect of your
competitors.”)
Possession and/or Use of Any Illegal Substance Including, But Not Limited To, Drugs and Alcohol –

Every program participant must understand that the ability to operate without mental or physical impairment

underpins the safety and surety of our program, both on and off the water. I will refrain from smoking, drinking

and/or illegal drug use.
Safety – Safety underpins everything we do. As such, it must be viewed as a philosophy, and NOT simply items

on a checklist. Sailing and racing are inherently risky activities, and all coaches/instructors will actively manage

risk when working with our youngest sailors and will help our older sailors understand appropriate risk

management strategies to ensure that the training and/or competitive environment is safe. As a junior sailing

program participant, I will ensure that my equipment is ready to support all planned activities. I will

immediately inform my coach/instructor if I feel that I am not ready to participate fully in the planned activity

(i.e., understand the task, am physically healthy enough, rested and skilled to ensure its successful outcome). I

will look out for my fellow junior sailors.

I, ______________________________________ have read and understand the LYC Junior Program Mission

Statement and I agree to abide by the Code of Conduct for Junior Sailors. I recognize that participation in the

LYC Junior Program is a privilege, and not a right. I understand that if I do not abide by and promote the Code
of Conduct I may be temporarily or permanently suspended from LYC’s Junior Program.

Personal Equipment and Gear
Personal equipment and gear required varies with the curriculum you are enrolled in. Equipment and gear for traveling
teams and spring sailing can be significant. Sailing gear tends to be quite specialized and sometimes costly. Therefore,
when you purchase new gear, buy quality gear that will be durable and permit use for multiple seasons.
Label all of your gear with a permanent marker!

If you are in Gold, Silver or Bronze Fleet, you will need your own boat. This can be accomplished by buying new, or
used. There are a lot of quality used boats available so talk to other sailors and parents and shop around before buying,
especially if this is your first year on the racing team. When purchasing your boat don’t forget about a dolly. Trailers are
optional, as are covers.

Green Fleet sailors can charter an LYC club Opti, spars, sail, and blades after signing the appropriate charter agreement at
the beginning of the season.

Mandatory Gear for all ages and classes:
 Life Jacket‐ Ensure that it is the correct size and comfortable fit. Must be coast guard approved. Life Jackets are
worn at all times while sailing or in a motor boat.
 Whistle‐ must be attached to the life jacket. Opti sailors: Whistles are required at all USODA sponsored events.
 Closed‐toe shoes‐ should be worn at all times, even when sailing, so they must be able to get wet.
o Good examples include: sailing boots, water shoes, old tennis shoes, crocs… etc.
 Other gear to bring every day:
‐ Water Bottle
‐ Hat
‐ Lunch (for all‐day sailors)
‐ Sunscreen
‐ Foul Weather Gear‐ we will still go sailing in the rain
‐ Sailing gloves
- Countdown timer watch

Payments, Cancellations, and Refunds
All requests for cancellations or changes must be made to the Sailing Director’s office via email to
[email protected]. Cancellations made 7 days or more before the start date of the session will be
refunded in full. After that, there are no refunds; however we will offer a credit towards a future session (space
permitting). There is no pro-rate for partial attendance.

Dry Storage
Opti sailors participating in the current season may keep their boat in their assigned rack spot. Optis will be charged $20 a
month to be stored on the Opti rack or in the Sailing Center. If you remove your boat from the Sailing Center, you must
inform the Sailing Director in writing one month prior to removal. Everyone is responsible for putting their own
equipment away after each practice. If you don’t put your boat back on the rack after practice, you will be charged $25. If
you leave any equipment out in the garage or in the Sailing Center, you will be charged $15.

Youth Sailing Guest (YSG) House Rules
The Youth Sailing Guest program provides an opportunity for non-member children to participate in the youth sailing
activities of the Lauderdale Yacht Club. The Youth Sailing Guest program is for young sailors enrolled in high school or
younger who are introduced to the program by a Member in good standing and approved by the Sailing Director. A
completed registration form, waiver or liability signed by the Youth Sailing Guest and his or her parents, a signed code of
conduct, and an orientation with the Sailing Director or the designated Club representative are required before beginning
participation. The Youth Sailing Guest and their family will agree to follow the Club’s House Rules and the guidelines of
the program as established by the Yachting Committee.
