MaliqHOLDENhull ionians rufc @ioniansrufc @hull ionians rufchull ionians rufc head of rugbyA warm welcome to you all.HELLO and welcome to Brantingham ParkFinally, the sun is starting to come out and hopefully with that an even more exciting brand of Hull Ionians Rugby too. It's always our way to go after a game and Win the game by playing fast, expansive, exciting rugby… However, weather and some of the pitch conditions over the last few months has meant we’ve had to play a more pragmatic style of rugby. This is something I’m extremely proud of the lads for doing we’ve won our last two games by 1 point and 2 points. Of course, I would have loved to have won by more but last year I think we probably would of lost both… Winning's a habit and we've won 10 of our last 12 games, this at a time with a huge amount of injuries! The teams efi ort and determination over the last few months has been absolutely brilliant and I’m so pleased with our ability to keep getting better as the season goes on.Today, we welcome a very dangerous Rossendale. They’re playing for survival so we know they will come here and ff ght for absolutely everything. We follow their ff xtures so I’ve watched a lot of them this year, and for me this is the best they’ve looked. They ran Sheffl eld Abbeydale close a few weeks back and have recently turned Billingham and Sheffl eld Tigers over, two teams that we know are hard to beat. They’ve added some real experience to their side as the leagues went on and it's been no surprise that their form has improved as a result.I think it's a simple challenge for our guys today. Match their energy, match their desire and everything that takes no talent! I think if we do that we have the game plan and players to beat them.Away from the ff rst team, it’s been great to have the Colts team training with us and the Buccs over the last few months, it’s so important that there is a clear pathway from our age group rugby to senior rugby. Hopefully, we might see a few of those young lads playing for the Buccs and the ff rst ff fteen before the season ends. Also, good luck to the U13s in their ff nal vs Selby!A lot has also been happening of the pitch with the creation of our Community Foundation which I hope and believe will be a huge asset to our community, helping people who need it most. It’s in its early stages at the moment but hopefully there will be more information coming out in the following months.Last but by no means least, I would like to thank all our sponsors, volunteers and anyone who helps make the club the special place it is. Often your inffi uence is overlooked but I know from myself, players - young and old - without you there is no club! So thank you for all that you do!UP THE I’SMal

A win is a win, as they say, and Ionians won; and yet at the fi nal whistle there was a slight feeling of frustration that the margin of victory wasn’t more convincing, but relief that despite the performance not being as accomplished as of late, there was still fi ve points garnered. That obviously reffi ects the recent high levels we have witnessed from the home team, but must also acknowledge the determination and efi ort of the visitors. They, along with the Otley Town Whooping and a Hollering band, put in a very spirited display.Ionians took an easy three points and an early lead with a Ben Smith penalty. Otley then made the most of a period of possession; good retention put them well into the Ionians half, with the hosts eventually clearing to touch on their 22. Otley took clean ball and drove in round the tail. Scrum-half, Will Beanland, picked out Henry Acland, who picked his way past some wayward tackling to score. Freddie Spensley added the conversion to put Otley 3 – 7 up after the opening ten minutes.Buoyed by their success Otley continued to press away at the Ionians defence. Spensley accepted a chance to go for goal when Ionians were penalised (an increasingly frequent problem) and he made no mistake from in front of the posts, to take a sevenpoint lead. When they had the ball Ionians had looked sharp, but they were prone to handling errors. They did eventually put together some decent stufi , Jimmy McDaniel had a good run down the stand-side touch before the ball was moved smartly across to the other wing for Cam Burnhill to stretch his legs.He was pulled down just inside the 22 and the ball switched back in ff eld. It then came back across to Burnhill, as he got back to his feet, for him to be able to hack it on and win the race to touch down. An excellent strike from Smith ensured the maximum points and tied the scores; 10 a piece after 25 minutes.Ionians looked the better of the two sides coming up to the break and hot-headed Mudd did nothing to help Otley’s cause when he was shown a yellow card for blatantly interfering at the breakdown.Hull Ionians RUFC v Otley RUFCHULL IONIANS 29 - 27 OTLEY RUFCReport and photos by Malcolm Knowles & F4 Photography GroupI's hold on tight in roller coaster rideJIMMY MCDANIEL HAD A GOOD RUNMINIKIN WAS CREATING HAVOC28.2.261st XV

Ionians got full retribution with two tries in quick succession. Straight from the infringement Smith went to the corner. Up went Makin and on went the drive. It trundled right to the line before grinding to a halt, Sam Pocklington threw a perfectly weighted pass to Greg Minikin who stepped round his man and went over for the try. Smith added the goal to put Ionians back into the lead, 17 – 10.Minikin was creating havoc through the mid-ff eld and a powerful break had Otley back-peddling rapidly. The ball was moved quickly to George Hotchen, who looked as if he might make it to the line, he was grabbed ff rst but was able to turn back inside to ff nd Ben Stephenson running up in support and he plunged over to score. Another success for Smith brought the score to 24 – 10 with only a minute to the break.Otley used the time for a long range pot at goal and Spensley made no mistake to take the teams to oranges with the scoreboard showing 24 -13.The visitors made a good start to the second half. A charged down clearance kick kept Ionians trapped in their own 22 and a ff red-up Otley pack battered away until Chris Jackson was able to breach the defensive wall and crash over. Spensley made no mistake ofi the tee to pull the score back to 24 – 20. Too close for comfort. Otley enjoyed the better of the next twenty minutes. Ionians ffi eetingly ofi ered to assert themselves but poor handling and persistently getting on the wrong side of the referee prevented any progress.Man of the Match Sponsored by The Triton InnJames Watts Sponsored by GosschalksOtley failed to make anything of their territorial advantage, despite an abundance of enthusiasm, possibly being too predictable in approach play, which played into the hands of a well drilled side, such as Ionians are turning out to be. So, by the hour mark the result hung in the balance. In fact, it wasn’t until the match entered the ff nal ten minutes that there was any alteration to the scoreboard and it was the hosts who extended their lead.Ionians were awarded a penalty on the Otley 22 and kicked to the corner. Makin secured the ball and the drive went on, and on and over. Adam Brankley came up with the ball to claim his 14th try of the season. Smith was ofi target but Ionians held a nine point advantage. Enough to see them to the ff nal whistle, surely? It was a nervous last few minutes. Otley came back with renewed vigour and the outstanding James Sanderson sacriff ced himself to prevent a possible try, but earning a yellow card.It was only a temporary reprieve, Otley piled in and went route one for innumerable phases, they got little change from the Ionians defence and eventually threw the ball wide where, with the help of a fortunate bounce, it fell to Ben Raubitschek to gather the ball and skip over. Spensley, nervelessly knocked over the diffl cult conversion to signal a frenetic ff nale.Ionians saw it through to the whistle without mishap, Sam Pocklington kicking the ball out of play following a successful line-out.www.hullionians.co.uk [email protected] 01482 667342 hull ionians rufc @ioniansrufc @hull ionians rufc

This game was every bit as close as the scoreline suggests; despite Ionians opening the scoring in the second minute, they didn’t retake the lead until two minutes remained. They could still have blown it, when they conceded a penalty, only for Jamie Rudd’s goal attempt, the ff nal play of the game, to drift just wide.Borthwickian statisticians would doubtless point out that the visitors had much more possession, gained a territorial advantage, which had them spending a considerable amount of time in the opposition “red zone” and crossed over for three tries compared to two. But, of course, there are lies, damned lies and statistics. A truth is that Ionians did have more of the play and the better part of the pitch but failed to make the most of it through a combination of careless handling, culpably poor kicking and questionable discipline, but by far and away most signiff cant, was a dogged and determined defensive performance from the home side.It was impressive, but ultimately not enough. Ionians found a way to overcome their own issues and a resolute Tigers efi ort to record their 15th win of the season, nine of which have come on their travels, and cement fourth place in N2N.Will Wood, (on loan from Rotherham and well known to the Dore Moor faithful) got Ionians ofi to a ffi ying start. Greg Minikin had made inroads into the Tigers mid-ff eld before the ball was moved out to Cam Burnhill, who weaved his way down the clubhouse touchline. The ball came back across ff eld to winger Wood and he saw ofi several Tigers players to power over close to the corner. Ben Smith struck a beauty ofi the tee for an early 7 point lead.It was an advantage that lasted all of a minute. Tigers gathered the box kick, returned from the re-start, and moved the ball left and right, going through the phases to create room for Miles Dodsworth to cut diagonally in ff eld ofi the wing and dot down under the posts. Rudd accepted the routine conversion to tie the score.SHEFFIELD TIGERS 23 - 24 HULL IONIANSNip and tuck, skill or luck?14.3.261st XVSheffi eld Tigers v Hull Ionians Report and photos by Malcolm Knowles

www.hullionians.co.uk [email protected] 01482 667342 hull ionians rufc @ioniansrufc @hull ionians rufcIonians spent the best part of the next ff fteen minutes denying the home side much of a look at the ball whilst demonstrating a well drilled driving maul. It looked to be efi ective until it ffi oundered on the rocks of determination set out along the Tigers try line.Sheffl eld eventually broke up ff eld and from a scum on half way found touch on the Ionians 22. Ionians won the line and the ball was hoisted skywards to be collected by Dodsworth, who swung a pass to set Rudd away back over the half way line. He looped a pass across to Jamie Broadley who took it at pace to carve his way through to the line. Rudd tagged on the extras for a 14 – 7 lead.Ionians thought they had come back to level terms with a break from Burnhill taking him clear, but play was brought back for a forward pass and Tigers took full advantage of the let-ofi when Rudd kicked a penalty, after Ionians were penalised at a ruck, to push the score on to 17 – 7.Another penalty on the stroke of half-time, following an infringement at a scrum, gifted Tigers another three points and the home side went in at half -time with a relatively sizeable lead, 20 – 7. Ionians had failed to make enough of their chances to be anything other than be behind at the break.Ionians started the second half playing up the hill and on the ofi ensive. They were held up over the line and following a frank exchange of views involving most of the players on both sides, Tigers dropped out from under the posts to clear. The kick fell to Minikin and he clattered into the on-rushing line. The ball was popped up by Sam Pocklington to Joe Makin and he ffi icked it back across to James Watts who went racing through the gap and under the posts. It was a lovely move, one that we have seen before and will hopefully see again. 20 -14 after 45 minutes of play.Indiscipline caught Ionians out again; from the restart they were caught ofi side on the 22, in front of the posts, and Rudd gratefully accepted the three points on ofi er.Another chance then went begging for the visitors; George Hotchen made a good break in front of the clubhouse but failed to pick out Burnhill racing up on his inside. Despite re-gathering the loose ball and pressing to the line Ionians were again penalised and Tigers cleared downff eld. Here they remained to apply some sustained pressure. Ionians defence proved as impenetrable as the home sides had been, so after the forwards had failed to make any headway Will Baker switched play and was unlucky when his cross-ff eld kick just failed to pick out Dodsworth, who knocked on as he scrambled for the ball. Smith put in a good kick to take play back into the Tigers half. Hotchen and Minikin both threaten the line but Tigers hold ff rm. From a scrum 5 yards out Adam Brankley picked up and drove for the line. He was stopped just short, as was Makin and Ben Stephenson when they drove in, but the pack re-grouped and Archie Upton was at the back of the breakdown and he grabbed the ball and burrowed over for the try. Smith knocked over the easy conversion to fetch Ionians to within two points of the hosts, 23 – 21, with just over ff ve minutes remaining.Tigers took the re-start into the Ionians 22 but they conceded a penalty and Smith put in a raking kick to take play up to the home 22. Tigers were penalised again at the line-out and after the advantage came to nought Ionians elected to go for goal. Smith obliged and Ionians took a one point lead into the ff nal two minutes.Tigers launched one ff nal attack and James Sanderson was harshly adjudged to have gone ofi his feet at the breakdown. This presented Rudd with one last chance of glory. It was a lengthy 40 yard range; he had the distance but not the direction and it drifted narrowly wide. That was that, a one-point victory for Ionians in an enthralling, hard fought afi air.Jack Gillingwater hasn’t had a mention, which is an oversight. He had an outstanding game and showed he is perfectly capable of operating at this level. He was selected as the Ionians MoM by the opposition, believe Jack, believe.

Those of a certain age will remember Dynasty, a family drama governed by the oil tycoon Blake Carrington. Ionians have their own version, with Albert Snr. the patriarchal head of the Thunderclifi e clan, a rugby family that have been part of the club for eons, with three lads being part of the M/J section and going on to represent the ff rst team. First up was Albert Jnr, then Luke (a bit of a maverick, having played in the backs) and ff nally Josh.Josh will make his 100th appearance for the ff rst team this week-end, having played his ff rst game way back in 2010/11 season, stepping up from the Hawks on a couple of occasions. There is documentary evidence that Josh played in the back-row for the second team but he has made his name as a solid front rower. He was involved for the next six seasons, until work took him South. He came back in 21/22, before having a couple of seasons away, and returned last season to become an integral part of the ff rst team squad.Josh has crossed the whitewash eight times in total, with half of those coming when he returned in 20/21, and has managed one this time out. We wish him well for the rest of the campaign and hope he can add to his tally.

Hull Ionians developing winning habit Winning tight games has become a habit for a Hull Ionians side still with a shot at gate-crashing this season’s National Two North play-ofi s, but with one eye on the bigger picture. Maliq Holden’s Ionians have won ff ve of their seven games since the turn of the year, crucially three of those coming against Darlington Mowden Park, Macclesff eld and Tynedale.A 31-19 win at Mowden Park last month saw them climb to fourth, and although with ff ve games remaining Macclesff eld and Tynedale might have too much of an advantage on them in the race for second and the promotion play-ofi , Ionians’ form and mentality augers well for the run-in and beyond.Holden said: “We’re delighted, there’s been a lot of tough games in there, beating three of the top four, and we also gave (unbeaten leaders) Sheffl eld a good game, had them within one score most of the game.“Winning is a habit. We identiff ed in the previous two years we’d lost a lot more games than we’d won, but in a lot of those games the large majority were by one score so we weren’t as bad as the stats suggested.“So we had to develop a game plan where we could win those close games and when you get into that habit it becomes a skill.“The big thing for me about this group is we’ve had a lot of injuries across this last block, 10 ff rst-team players, but when you believe in a system and a process, that habit of winning will see you ff nd a way. We’ve been doing that most weeks because we now have that belief to get through the game.”Ionians are nine points ofi ff fth with only 25 left to play for, but in a regionalised fourth tier won by Yorkshire clubs the past two seasons in Rotherham Titans and Leeds Tykes – with Sheffl eld four more wins away from making it a hattrick – Holden has an eye on the future.“We’re just going to try and win every game from now on, we can’t do much about what’s happening above us,” he said.“It’s really good for us growing as a team. I plan to keep the large majority of these guys and build on the project. It doesn’t just happen in one year, we’re trying to grow and keep on improving.”Full article in The Yorkshire Post, 10th MarchWhen you believe in a system and a process, that habit of winning will see you fi nd a way.

The Vikings have had a fantastic season so far, building strongly on last year and showing just how much they’ve developed as a team. The progress across the squad has been clear to see, with the boys embracing more advanced skills and game awareness that you wouldn’t always expect at this age. Their conff dence, teamwork, and understanding of the game have all taken big steps forward.A standout moment this season was winning the trophy at the Sandal tournament early on, a brilliant achievement that set the tone for everything that’s followed. Since then, the team has continued to perform at a very high level, remaining competitive and consistent, and extending an impressive unbeaten run over the past couple of years. This success has earned the Vikings an exciting opportunity to go on tour to the Minehead Leicester Tigers Challenge at Butlins. It will be a great experience for the squad, giving them the chance to test themselves against strong southern teams and continue their development in a new environment.Coaches Paps and Fred are incredibly proud of the lads, not just for their results, but for their attitude, efi ort, and willingness to learn. There’s a real sense that this group can go a long way, and everything they’re doing now is building towards future challenges like the Yorkshire Cups.A great group of players, a great team spirit, and plenty more to come.Season OverviewHULL IONIANS U12s – THE VIKINGSThis is Joshua Stockton. Jamal has always been a committed sports person. Growing up in South Yorkshire he tried most sports at schools, but by the time he joined Mount St Mary's school, 6th form, it was clear he had serious talent for rugby – he excelled at all aspects of the contact area and was renowned for breaking tackles to ofi -load for try scoring backs! His junior pinnacle was playing for Doncaster MJ section, in the Yorkshire Vase ff nal, losing to Hull Ionians – what an irony!!!England Fire Service v Army Masters at Sixways StadiumHull Ionians v Otley,8th Nov 2025Doncaster Phoenix, 2024/25 season

Our Under 6s will be taking part in an unforgettable experience this weekend as they will take to the pitch for a curtain raiser ahead of the 1st XV match at Hull Ionians RUFC. For many of the children it will be their first time playing on the main pitch at Brantingham Park, and they are very excited. Full of energy, big smiles and plenty of enthusiasm, the team will showcase fantastic teamwork, great running and some brilliant tagging throughout the game. It has been brilliant to see the confidence of the players growing as they have progressed this season & to take part in an occasion like this and gain the support from the crowd arriving for the main game. We are looking forward to sharing this experience with the children, their parents & our Ionians family. Moments like this are what grassroots rugby is all about – giving our under 6s team the chance to experience the game in a fun and memorable way.A big thank you to Hull Ionians first team for giving our Under 6s the opportunity to be part of the day. The future of rugby is certainly looking bright! Following a few months of missed connections due to the player’s busy training and press schedule, Hull Ionians Gladiators (U7) welcomed Hull FC loose forward John Asiata and Head of the Hull FC Community Foundation Sam French into our arena on Tuesday night. In what was initially going to be a drop in visit by the player, coaches were thrilled to hear the last minute ofi er from the Foundation to instead hold a Multi Skills Rugby coaching session at Brantingham Park. With so much overlap of transferable skills at the tag rugby age grades, we jumped at the chance.Sam and John led the boys through a series of tagging, passing, catching and evasion drills before handing out some match worn boots and trainer of the week medals for our Gladiators Dexter, Louie and Cass. With players at other ages having Hull FC parents around the club, and following the success of the Brad Fash Testimonial game, the Community Foundation would be keen to explore other opportunities to link up with Ionians. The Gladiators would like to thank Hull FC, John Asiata, Sam French, Natalie Acton and Caroline Kipling for their parts in making this event possible. The Gladiators meet a Black and White Hero
