JoeMAKINhull ionians rufc @ioniansrufc @hull ionians rufchull ionians rufc captainA warm welcome to you all.A good afternoon to everyoneAfternoon all and a very warm welcome to Brantingham Park. To all players, coaches, officials and supporters of Otley RUFC I trust you had a pleasant journey down the M62 and I am sure you will enjoy a warm welcome here at Brantingham Park.Today marks the last in a block of 7 games since Christmas which has been highly successful with wins against Macclesfield, Tynedale, and a strong performance last week at DMP. This has seen us cement our place in 4th in National 2 North with 6 games to play, with all involved keen to push on to secure the best possible finish to the season. The season has seen us take significant strides in performance; credit must go to coaches who have worked tirelessly throughout the weeks to ensure we continue to improve. In particular, our set pieces marshalled by Lewis has improved week on week with the maul becoming a potent attacking weapon. The season itself has been marred by injuries and subsequent long-term unavailability with Jack Townend, Kobie Fofie, Chirs Morton, Lucas Powell, & Josh Britton all being long term absentees from the side due to injuries. Add to that George Mewburn who suffered a horrendous knee injury at our last home match you could say there has been something of an injury crisis in the 1st XV. However, this has allowed the depth of our playing squad to be tested with 41 players in total being used. This is a massive step forward in the right direction and something which has been missing for last couple of seasons. As we look forward to the end of season 25/26 no matter where we finish in the league we can be proud of what we continue to achieve in Rugby at Hull Ionians. With a thriving mini/juniors setup girls & boys, 4 senior rugby teams, 3 men’s and 1 women’s we can be the envy of others who are unfortunately seeing decline. Thanks must go to the army of volunteers who give up their time to allows us all to enjoy our Rugby. Joe Makin1st XV CaptainUp the Is

Ionians came out on the wrong side of a close result, falling two points short in a keenly contested competition. It was another game of fine margins; perhaps Ionians weren’t as precise or composed as they have been recently and one could also say it was a case of biter bit, as the Greens put in the kind of defensive effort, particularly in the second half, we have become accustomed to seeing from the home side. No matter, it was another compelling, entertaining match.Wharfedale took an early lead. They moved the ball out wide for wingman Jack Terry, he found good support on his inside shoulder from Callum Trees and he powered over. Archie Haddon was unfortunate to see his touchline effort come back off the posts, 0 – 5 to the Greens. It didn’t take long for the hosts to fashion a response. Ionians took a line-out ball, on went the drive and George Mewburn emerged from the melee with the score. 5 -5 with barely five minutes played. Wharfedale were soon back into the Ionians 22 and Jack Pinder ran on to a short pass to power over, this time Haddon knocked over the kick, bouncing it over off the inside of the up-right. 5 – 12 after ten minutes.George Mewburn sustained a serious injury (we wish him a speedy and full recovery) which necessitated a break in play, and not long into the resumption Sam Pocklington grabbed Ionians’ second try.Sam Edwards had cantered up to the ‘dale 22 to put the home side into a good position. Poor retention gave Wharfedale a scrum which allowed them to clear to touch. Ionians won the line-out and Greg Minikin charged into contact. Pocklington was quick to the breakdown and he pirouetted round one man before scurrying away to score. Ben Smith added the extras to tie the scores, 12 – 12, half way through the first session.Ionians were soon back into the dale 22. They used an effective driving maul to get the ball over the line but the Greens ensured that it was held up, to give them a drop out from under the posts. It sailed out as far as Greg Minikin, who ran it back with interest. The ball was shipped out smartly to Mal Holden, who saw off all comers on a 30 yard dash to the line. Smith was again successful off the tee and Ionians were up by 7 points, 19 – 12.Hull Ionians RUFC v WharfedaleHULL IONIANS 29 - 31 WHARFEDALE RUFCReport and photos by Malcolm KnowlesI's are stumped; they can't see a win for Cal. ‘Dale hit back, with Oliver Cicognini dummying his way clear and up to the home 22. Play broke down, with Ionians knocking on, and from the resulting scrum young scrum-half, Idris Morgan, intelligently picked out Trees as he cut through, untouched, to the line. The conversion went begging but the lead was cut to two points, 19 – 17, with half an hour gone.Play ebbed and flowed, but perhaps not with the fluidity that implies. This was best illustrated by the balletic Burnhill, normally poetry in motion, who chased after his own volley, stumbled as he gathered the ball and flapped and floundered his way over. More Muscovy duck than Swan Lake, but not to worry, they all count, Cam.Half time with the score nicely poised, 24 – 17.Ionians looked to have extended their lead right at the start of the second half. Holden broke clear and got to with inches of the line. Pocklington swung a pass in field to Owen Hanson- Church (I think) who slid in under the posts. Unfortunately, the pass was adjudged forwards.Ionians piled on the pressure. They came close to another try but were tackled into touch just inches short. There was little relief for Wharfedale; an isolated run up the touch by Jack Cherry was as good as it got for twenty minutes for the Greens but the hosts failed to press home the advantage, conceding too many penalties and gradually Wharfedale began to come more into the game.Man of the Match Sponsored by The Triton InnAdam Brankley Sponsored by Store Mill StorageA penalty found touch just outside the 22 and ‘dale went through the phases, Trees gathered a loose ball and powered over, seeing off some less than convincing tackles. He converted his own hat-trick try to tie the scores at 24 all.Smith shanked a penalty attempt well wide but Wharfedale failed to tidy up and were forced to drop out from behind the line. It fell to Adam Brankley and he clattered into contact. Dale were penalised at the breakdown and Ionians went to the corner.A clean catch was driven on and Brankley broke from the maul to plunge over and restore the lead, 29 – 24.Within minutes the Greens were in a similar position, 5 yards out with a line-out to come. A clean take was rumbled on and replacement hooker, Robbie Collinson was on hand to dot down.Up stepped tall Trees to stroke over the touchline conversion and put the visitors two points in from with ten minutes to play.In truth Ionians never looked like scoring in the time remaining and Wharfedale put in a text book example of how to keep possession and run down the clock. They kept hold of the ball as if their lives depended on it. So, some you win and some you lose. Ionians had plenty of chances to build an unassailable lead in the second half but either didn’t take them or were rebuffed by a determined opposition. That’s how it goes sometimes.IONIANS PILED ON THE PRESSUREIT WAS ANOTHER GAMEOF FINE MARGINSwww.hullionians.co.uk [email protected] 01482 667342 hull ionians rufc @ioniansrufc @hull ionians rufc
This match and, specifically HI’s 1st half performance, epitomised what can happen when a team of talented individuals come together with determination, discipline, desire and a combined will to win as a team. Borthwick take note.Considering the level of talent that was not available for selection, those that took the field yesterday all made admirable contributions which produced yet another 5pt away win against a quality N2N squad. Prior to kick-off, both sides sat on 67 points each in 4th and 5th positions in N2N. We expected a hard game and despite what you may read into the scoreline, that is what we got.HI’s attacked immediately from the kick-off, unsettling DMP. This led to HI’s opening the scoring with a kick and chase, clinically finished by Mal Holden. Ben Smith missed the conversion: 4 mins 0-5.DMP were still wondering what had just happened when HI’s hit them again.A well take line-out, catch and drive with Owen Hanson-Church touching down. Ben Smith converted: 8 mins, 0-12.At this point, HI’s wing George Hotchen was unlucky enough to take a bad knock to his hip and has to be replaced by Oliver Rimmington.HI’s were now dominating the match and soon produced a similarly good line-out, catch and drive for Adam Brankley to touch down. Smith missed the conversion: 13mins, 0-17.DMP were without doubt combatant but were coming a resounding 2nd best. Much against the run of play, a mix up in HI’s impressive defence allowed DMP’s Oliver to score and Ward added the conversion: 15mins, 7-17.HI’s regrouped and carried on where they had left off in dominating possession and attacking DMP at every opportunity. Some more good work in midfield saw Mal Holden break through DMP’s despairing defence to score his 2nd try. Smith again converted. 18mins, 7-24.Report by Chris Taylor, Photos by Andy Hall (DMP)DARLINGTON MP 19 - 31 HULL IONIANSAnother good win on the road21.2.261st XVMowden v Hull Ionians RUFC
www.hullionians.co.uk [email protected] 01482 667342 hull ionians rufc @ioniansrufc @hull ionians rufcThe game was being played at some pace and DMP were now seeing some ball but theywere being persistently harassed by HI’s massively effective tackling. DMP eventually proved they are no soft touch when they worked the ball down to HI’s line for No8. Callum Mackenzie to crash over from close range. Ward converted: 26mins, 14-24.Just before Half time, HI’s were to score what would prove to be their last score of the day when more great handling saw Mal Holden, again, run free to score his hat-trick try: 40 mins, 14-31. Half-Time: 14-31.The 2nd half was brutal. A war of attrition with both sides asking nothing and giving nothing. There were few scoring chances but those that did present themselves were either mishandled or snuffed out by impressive defensive work. DMP took the only score of the 2nd half when Thompson dotted down wide out and Ward missed the conversion: 75mins, 19-31. Full Time: 19-31.Over post-match drinks, impressive, spirited, dominant, feisty, resolute, gutsy, along with other superlatives, were all heard to describe HI’s performance. The set piece was solid, the lineout worked well, we kicked well, we moved the ball with confidence and tackled with ferocity. All involved played their part and all contributed to providing as fine a 1st half of rugby that we have seen from this squad of young men. It was difficult to pick a Man of the Match but, after much debate, and drinks, we opted for Greg Minikin. Greg might not have troubled the score board but his wholehearted display typified the spirit of the team on the day.In recent weeks, we have had 5pt victories against the Clubs that today sit 2nd , 3rd and 5th in N2N. That is a really good effort. Well done to all involved.

hull ionians womenPlayer profile: Emma Hall, TreasurerWhat made you want to try rugby?I grew up watching Hull FC with my dad and always had a love for rugby. In 2020 when we could barely leave the house my sister mentioned going to train at Ionians, and wanting a run around and some social interaction I asked to join her. My first training sessions looked very different to most peoples due to the restrictions, and after a strange couple years I played my first game in December 2021. What’s your favourite Ionians Women memory? Our 2022 tour to Tuilagi Festival. We didn’t stop laughing all weekend, and made so many amazing memories as a team. But also having the opportunity to train with Eddie Jones, which was a fantastic experience. Do you have any personal rugby goals? On the pitch I want to continue to better myself and my rugby skills. I would now consider my rugby goals to be bigger off the pitch by looking what I can do for my team and community. I love being a part of the women’s committee and want to continue to give back to my club. I’m also on committee for Hull University Women’s Rugby Union, and want to continue encouraging a link between the two clubs to create opportunities for women’s rugby players in Hull. It’s been great to see the uni girls join us at Ionians to not only help our player recruitment, but to see their personal skills develop and improve on the pitch with the help of our wonderful team. What’s the best thing about being part of the team? The team becomes a part of a your family, when you come to the club you forget all your worries outside of rugby. No matter how bad the day has been, training with the team is guaranteed to change things around. The women made the short trip across the bridge to sunny Scunny on Sunday to face our old friends Scunthorpe Women. Scunthorpe are in a top of the table battle with Mansfield for promotion, and it certainly showed. Their organisation in attack and formidable kicking game lead to multiple tries on the board early doors, and Hull Ionians fighting for breath and possession by half time. After a switch around in the back line at the break and the use of our fullback’s boot to ease the pressure, Hull Ionians managed to redeem ourselves with a couple of tries and some improved defensive work, leading to a 56-12 scoreline at full time. Our next game is against Mellish at home on 8.3.26, it’d be great to have some support!WXV fall short against local friendly rivals

Colt's Success inYorkshire Academyrecognising achievementsKeiji Ashaolu proudly represented Yorkshire at the Academy Under 18 Finals Day against England Divisional XV, delivering an outstanding performance and scoring three tries in a thrilling 59 - 33 victory. It was a dominant display from Yorkshire, with Keiji playing a pivotal role in securing the win on one of the biggest stages at this level.Keiji is a fantastic player and in demand for Yorkshire, school and club rugby. He is amazing and it has been wonderful to watch him grow throughout his many years at Hull Ionians. Without a doubt, we will see him playing international professional rugby and we will all be proud to have had the pleasure of watching him develop.A Club United in PrideThe entire Mini/Juniors section are immensely proud of Keiji and everything he has achieved so far - as is the wider rugby family here at Hull Ionians RUFC.Moments like these reflect not only individual talent but years of dedication, hard work and commitment to the club.Steve Hogarth, Colts Coach at Hull Ionians RUFC

Hull Ionians U11 v Otley U11CoachesMike Ashton, Rob Page, Pete Kingston, Dan Gowthorpe Squad • Miller • Alex • Rupert • Jack • Edward • Alexander • Arlo • Noah • Noah S• Finn • Jude • Rowan • AngeloHull Ionians U11s face Otley U11s in the curtain raiser to what promises to be a great afternoon of rugby against old rivals Otley. It’s a brilliant opportunity for our young players to experience the matchday buzz, run out in front of a big crowd, and show just how far they’ve come this season. We’d like to welcome Ben and his team to Hull Ionians and we hope for an entertaining match. The squad’s journey so far has been one of real growth. From the opening weeks of the campaign, the focus has been on developing strong fundamentals while encouraging the boys to play with confidence and ambition. That approach is paying off. The team is beginning to show real cohesion, with improved communication, smarter decision-making, and a growing belief in their ability to compete with anyone put in front of them.In recent fixtures, Hull Ionians U11s have been playing some excellent rugby, with a real battle against local rivals Beverley last week. The intent is clear: move the ball quickly, play at pace, and look to stretch teams by getting the ball out wide to our game breakers. When we play with tempo and support each other well, we’ve seen just how dangerous this group can be. The forwards are working hard to win quick ball, while the backs are growing in confidence to attack space and back themselves in one-on-one situationsThere’s also a nice bit of shared history behind today’s fixture. Hull Ionians U11s coach Mike Ashton and Otley 1st XV coach Kyle Dench lifted the Yorkshire Cup twice together as team-mates back in the late 1990s. While Mike is now passing on his love of the game to the next generation, Kyle’s playing and coaching journey has taken him rather further since those days - adding an extra bit of spice and connection to today’s encounter.Enjoy the game, and get behind the next generation of Hull Ionians.under 11s curtain raisers
