Type of Departmentalization
used in Apple Inc.

The type of departmentalization used in Apple Inc
company is Functional Departmentalization.
Functional Departmentalization is an organizational
structure where business leaders divide teams based
to the professionals' areas of specialization.

Our company has quite fixed departmentalisation
as it consists of 5 differents departments which
are marketing, engineering, finance and admin,
operation and China. Each department has their
own upper management and vice presidents.

Advantages of Functional

Department

Each department can be staffed by experts in that
functional area
- Through the functional departmentalization, business functions
and product-based groups are effectively controlled through
the decisions of the CEO and other top executives. This
advantage of Apple Inc.’s functional departmentalization and
effective strategic management implementation helps in
establishing coherence throughout the entire company.

Simplicity
- Functional departmentation is simple and common form of
departmentation. It is very easy to establish and operate.
Apple Inc is managed through chain of command and
information flow from the top to bottom line of command
makes the operation smooth.

Supports strong management control in the
organization
- This departmentalization empowers top leaders like Tim
Cook to control everything in the organization. Apple
Inc.’s success is linked to innovation and the leadership of
Steve Jobs, and its corporate structure is partly
responsible for ensuring support for such leadership.
Now, under Tim Cook’s leadership, Apple has made some
changes in its organizational structure to suit current
global market and industry demands

The COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak has been spreading around the
world since January 2020 and so far, it has had a major impact on
Apple's device production and device sales in affected countries like
China, Italy, South Korea, the United States, and almost every other
country.

01 Coronavirus Impact on
Apple's Device Sales

When news of COVID-19 spread in late January 2020 and infection

numbers began to rise, Apple shut down all retail stores, corporate
offices, and contact centers in China for two or more weeks.

Losing stores, operating on reduced hours, government-imposed
travel bans and quarantines, and the public's fear over contracting
coronavirus in public which has significantly impacted Apple's sales in
the country. After closing stores in China, Apple elected to close all
other retail stores in the United States and other countries on March
14 2020, which negatively impacted iPhone sales in the first quarter
of 2020. For example, Apple's iPhone sales declined 8.2%, totaling 41
million units.

02 Coronavirus Impact on

Apple's Device Production

Many of Apple's suppliers in China were forced to shut down

production for several weeks in early February 2020. Apple's
factories were up and running by mid to late February 2020 for

the most part, but travel restrictions heavily impacted areas in

China, mandatory quarantines, and low labor return rates led to
delays with factories ramping up to full production. Outbreaks
in new countries like South Korea also led to some factory
closures.

Apple implemented travel restrictions for its employees, and
employees have not been able to travel to China to begin the

preparation process that takes place ahead of when new

flagship iPhones are manufactured. In February 2020, Apple
employees typically travel to China to perfect their
manufacturing processes with partners like Foxconn, and delays
ate into the time that Apple needs to finalize orders for chips
and other iPhone components.

Most rumors now suggest that Apple's iPhones will be delayed
by about a month, so we could see launches in October or
November instead of September of 2020.

To the worldwide Apple family,

The global spread of COVID-19 affects all of us. At Apple,

we believe every problem has a solution. Companies are

experimenting with new methods of remaining productive.

In Our Offices an
d Stores

The most effective way to reduce the risk of virus
transmission is to reduce density while increasing social

other areas, we're taking extra precautions to protect our
team members and customers.

We will close all of our retail locations outside of Greater China
on March 27, 2020. We are dedicated to providing our
customers with exceptional service. You can reach us at
www.apple.com, or you can get the Apple Store app from the

by going to support.apple.com. I'd like to thank our extraordinary

As mentioned before, Apple temporarily closed all corporate

offices and retail stores in China in response to the virus.

Corporate offices are now reopened, and stores are in the

process of reopening. In the United States, Apple asked all of its

corporate employees to work from home where possible, and it is

providing unlimited sick leave to any employee infected with the

coronavirus. Retail stores were closed for approximately two

months, and as of June, Apple has begun allowing corporate

employees to start to return to their offices.

Giving Back

According to Apple CEO T‌ im Cook,‌ Apple's chief concern is
the health and safety of its employees, supply chain partners,
customers, and communities in which it operates, with Apple
prioritizing people over revenue.

Apple has worked with its suppliers to source more than 20
million N95 masks that have been distributed to healthcare
workers in the United States, and millions more have been
donated in Europe. Apple has also been manufacturing face
shields for medical communities, and has donated millions of
dollars to various charities.

Apple’s committed donations to the global COVID-19
response, both to help treat those who are sick and to help
lessen the economic and community impacts of the
pandemic, today reached $15 million worldwide.

TIPS FOR WORKING

TIPS TO STAY PRODUCTIVE WHILE

0101 WORKING FROM HOME

01 Maintain healthy lifestyle

Employees can increase productivity better by living a healthy
lifestyle. To be super productive, employees should stick to nutritious
meals, healthy snacks, fresh fruits and lots of water. If they eat well,
it shows in how their mind functions during the day, and they will
impress their remote colleagues with their boundless energy. As a
manager, I would not recommend my employees to overwork their
body, instead they should get sufficient amount of rest and sleep.
Another tips to stay productive at home is by doing exercise
regularly, even the simple ones will do to keep our body in check. With
this healthy lifestyle, employees will be more motivated to do their
jobs if they have a healthy body and mind.

In 14 February 2022, Apple will release a series of new health
resources to enable consumers to stay active and informed about
their health. For example, Apple Watch users can be alerted of
potential irregularities from powerful tools like the ECG app, irregular
rhythm notifications, high and low heart rate notifications, and
Cardio Fitness levels in their watch. For those employees who are just
getting started with exercise, Fitness+ in Apple Watch also offers
Workouts for Beginners like Strength, HIIT, Yoga, Pilates, Dance, and
Core. With this, I recommend employees to try out our Apple’s
product to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

02 Designate Your Own Workspace

Employees can designate their own workspace that is both
comfortable and conducive to add enthusiasm to work from
home. For example, they should have sufficient work

02 equip0m3 ent such as laptop, keyboard, headphone and many

more so that the work they do runs smoothly. As a Apple’s
manager, I also recommend employees to pick a desk that’s
an appropriate height for them and an ergonomic chair that
won’t give them back pain. Employees should also keep their
workspace clean and clear because this helps employees
better concentrate on the task at hand. Therefore,
productivity is boosted since they are able to work
efficiently even at home.

03 Use the Pomodoro Technique

Working from home can become more challenging in the
presence of distractions. Therefore, one of the more effective
tips for employees to deal with this is to use the Pomodoro
Technique, a highly effective working method in which you set a
02timer to focus on your projects for short bursts of time, take a
break and then focus once again. A study conducted by
DeskTime found that a 52-minute session and a break of 17
minutes is the ideal balance for productivity. It is proven
effective because the rests make it easier to maintain
concentration. To play the role as a manager, I suggest
employees to list the tasks that needs to be done every day
and then use this technique to rotate between them until they
are finally completed. This approach helps in improving focus,
whether in a high distraction environment as well as boost
employees level of productivity.

TIPS TO BALANCE WORK AND FAMILY

Balancing work and family is frequently just a matter of

organising your time properly and making the most of the
moments you have with the loved ones. Doing this may be
easier said than done, but it is always worthwhile. Below are
some strategies to find yourself feeling closer to your
family without having to give up your job.

01 Set boundaries between work life and home life

A good worker should be able to separate their work time and
family time. Therefore, I suggest employees to leave their work
behind at the end of the day and make a call to their family on
the way home. This can take their mind off work and focus on
spending free time relaxing with loved ones. Employees should
also make a schedule to enjoy time with family and time to focus
on work. For example, saying no to working on the weekends
because weekends are for families, or committing to the family
time after work hours by not continuing to check emails.

Departmentalization Covid-19 Human Resources Working from home

02 Connect with your family through routines

Employees should make an effort by creating daily routines
that allows them to spend time with their partner and kids
together. Employees can look for ways to make their
regular chores and habits into bonding time. They should
make sure that even short interactions with their children
and partner is focused and loving. For an instance, having
dinner with your kids every night or get up twenty minutes
earlier in the morning to enjoy a cup of coffee with your
partner. This allow employees to stay close with their
family and maintain a well-balanced relationship. As a
result, employees can manage stress and prevent burnout
at work.

Departmentalization Covid-19 Human Resources Working from home

03 Carve out time to be together with family

Since Apple Inc. is a big company, employees tend to have tons
of projects and works to be done, therefore it is significant for
them to manage time wisely so that working time and family
time do not collide. Employees need to spend time with their
families and prioritize them especially on the weekends and
during vacations. So as a manager, I advise employees to
allocate quality time for family. For example, planning special
activities together with family. Employees can keep it close to
home with a board game night or backyard barbeque, or take a
road trip together and explore exciting places during weekend.
Apple did offer one additional benefits where employees would
be able to take additional 2 weeks a year of remote work. This is
to allow Apple’s staff to work while travelling or spending time
with their families and friends, or simply enjoying a change of
environment. This extended remote working is a huge bonus for
employees in terms of work-life balance.
