OLIVER! is performed without an intermission.
Running time is approximately 75 minutes.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

I remember vividly watching the Oscar-winning film Oliver! when I was very young. What struck
me then, and has stayed with me over the decades, was the beautifully crafted score and
powerful performances. Based on the Dickens novel Oliver Twist — a brutal and demoralising
look at Victorian London — the story might seem an odd choice to adapt as a piece of musical
theatre. That, however, is the brilliance of Lionel Bart’s version. Amid the suffering and cruelty,
he manages to find every spark of decency in the novel and celebrates that humanity through
his uplifting music and lyrics.

Oliver! is my fifth stage production at La Grande Boissière, and I continue to be inspired by the
dedication and creativity of our students. It's been a pleasure working on this show with them
and with my colleagues on the creative team and across the campus. We hope Oliver's timeless
story stays with you for years to come.
