He didn’t actually have any books on hand, but when orders came in, he would find the book, buy it, and re-sell it at a profit. Little did he know the heights of success his business would grow to. Keep reading to find out just how high those heights reached! IN THE BEGINNING • The first book that ever sold on Amazon was titled “Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies.” It was purchased by John Wainwright, a friend of Bezos’ only employee, Shal Kaphan. The sale was made on April 3, 1995. Previously, the only books they had sold were run through the system as tests. Later an Amazon building was named after Wainwright to honor his purchase. • Bezos first wanted to call the company “Cadabra” as in “abracadabra” until his lawyer pointed out that it sounded too much like “cadaver.” “Amazon” was chosen as a name not only because it served as an iconic goal – to become the largest river of books in the world – but also because it started with the letter “A” putting it near the top of alphabetical search engines. • A third choice, Relentless.com, still takes you straight to Amazon. He has terrible skin reactions to flea bites. How can I get rid of them? -- Jesse B., Oak Ridge, Tennessee DEAR JESSE: Flea infestations are awful, aren’t they? As the seasons change and the weather warms up, flea activity rises, and pet owners start seeing more evidence of fleas on their pets and around their homes. Fleas aren’t just annoying. They can carry diseases that are transmissible to pets and humans. Tapeworms and cat scratch disease are just two of the potential ills that a flea infestation can bring into your home. Tackle a flea problem head-on, and don’t wait -- because it will continue to get worse as the summer approaches. Because of Flicker’s allergic reaction to flea bites, he needs direct treatment to repel fleas and prevent them from latching on to his fur again. Talk to his veterinarian about the most effective flea treatments. For example, a monthly or quarterly topical flea treatment may be a good option. Oral medication -- as pills or chewables -- is also very effective. The vet may also recommend medication to clear up his current skin issues. Reduce the risk of another flea infestation by making your home difficult for fleas to exist in. --Have your home treated for fleas by a pest control service. --Pick up clutter from the floor and replace any plush or felted toys with new ones. --Vacuum twice a week to pick up fleas and their eggs. --Repair or replace damaged window and door screens. --Remove any debris piles near your home, and shift wood piles farther away. WHO SHOULD BE SCREENED FOR LUNG CANCER? Dear Savvy Senior, Who should be screened for lung cancer and how it’s covered by Medicare? I used to smoke but quit many years ago and am wondering if I need to be tested. Just Turned 65 Dear Just Turned, Even if you haven’t touched a cigarette in decades, you could still be due for an annual lung cancer screening, based on new recommendations from the American Cancer Society (ACS). The new guidelines state that adults ages 50 to 80 who currently smoke or used to smoke the equivalent of one pack a day for 20 years should get an annual lowdose computed tomography scan (also called a CT scan), no matter how long ago you quit. ACS guidelines previously said that those who quit 15 or more years ago were in the clear. But new studies have shown that expanding screening eligibility saves lives, even among people who quit smoking years earlier. Early Detection Saves Lives Lung cancer is the deadliest cancer in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 234,580 new cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2024, and about 125,070 Americans will die from the disease. While lung cancer can occur in anyone at any age, cigarette smoking is the top risk factor and is linked to about 80 to 90 percent of lung cancer deaths, and most people diagnosed with the disease are age 65 or older. What makes lung cancer especially tricky is that it’s often symptomless until it’s at an advanced stage, when it’s harder to treat. Early detection can lead to a 20 to 25 percent improvement in survival rates, resulting in fewer deaths from lung cancer. But a 2022 report from the American Lung Association found that only 5.8 percent of people eligible for lung cancer screening in the U.S. get screened, and the screening rate is as low as 1 percent in some states. Screening & Coverage If you fall into the population eligible for a lung cancer screening, start by speaking with your doctor, even if it’s been a long time since you smoked. Medicare Part B will cover lung cancer screenings with a low-dose CT scan once a year for people ages 50 to 77 who are current smokers or quit in the last 15 years and have a 20-pack-year history. Patients must have an order from their doctor or health care provider and should not have symptoms of lung cancer. A low-dose CT scan is a noninvasive test where you lie down and hold your breath while being moved through a doughnut-shaped X-ray machine. The scan takes several X-ray images of the lungs and can help to identify possible abnormalities in the lung tissue. There are some potential risks with this screening, including the possibility of false positives, which can lead to more scans or invasive procedures. AccordLUNG CANCER SCREENING (continued) (cont’d at top of next column under United Healthcare ad) ing to the American Lung Association about 12 to 14 percent of lung cancer screening scans will have a false positive, which is about the same rate as with mammograms. Successive generations of Kindle readers expanded its abilities, and now the platform offers features similar to any Android-type device. Today there are over 12 million e-books available for use on Kindle. Although Amazon still reigns supreme as the world’s largest seller of books, it now sells more e-books than paper books. •Amazon now receives 66,000 orders per hour and ships out 1.6 million packages daily, not including third-party sellers. • Out of the 195 countries in the world, Amazon ships to over 100 of them. At the time, the company was generating revenue of about $120,000 per minute. This short delay was costly for the company, with an estimated $4.8 million in losses, though it’s assumed that most shoppers returned later in the day to complete their shopping. • During the Pokémon craze of 1999, Amazon purchased the entire Pokémon stock from the Toys-R-Us website. They were selling so fast on Amazon that there was fear of selling out, so they raided the fledgling e-commerce site of Toys-R-Us. It’s composed of several things. • First are cast-off cells from the special type of skin that lines the ear canal. Like all skin, it’s constantly renewing itself because even the tiniest break in the skin here will lead to ear infections and ear aches. • The skin in the ear canal is coated with an antimicrobial secretion from modified sweat glands. It’s called cerumen, from the Latin word “cera” meaning wax. This kills bacteria and fungus spores that enter the ear canal, and is also a natural insect repellent. • Oil glands in the ear canal, which are similar to the oil glands on the scalp, secrete an oily lubricant. Called sebum, its name comes from the Latin word for tallow. This oil helps trap dust and debris that enters the ear canal. • There are also tiny hairs lining the outer part of the inner ear. • This mixture is constantly renewing itself, while moving the old ear wax out of the way. This is accomplished by a “conveyor belt” which is activated by the movement of the jaw while eating or talking, by the vibration of the ear drum, and by the waving of the ear hairs. The wax moves out of the ear at a rate a little slower than the rate at which fingernails grow. • Itchy ears can be a sign that too much ear wax is being removed through excessive cleaning. Low levels of wax leave the skin on the ear canal exposed. • Too much ear wax can cause temporary hearing loss as the build-up blocks sound waves from reaching the ear drum. • Ear wax comes in two forms: wet and dry. Which kind you have depends on genetics. Wet ear wax is a dominant gene, so most people have wet ear wax. However, people of East Asian descent, particularly those whose heritage is from China, Japan, or Korea, as well as Native Americans, typically have the recessive gene for dry ear wax. Surprisingly, the same gene that results in dry ear wax also results in less underarm odor. Those who have the gene for wet wax, which includes most Caucasians, also have the gene for smelly armpits—as well as a gene for increased incidents of breast cancer. • By tracking pockets of this recessive ear wax (continued on the next page) Tidbits® For advertising rates call 716.807.7729 of Niagara Region Page 5

Things inserted into the ear also disturb the hairs inside the ear, and this stimulates the oil glands to produce more oil that turns into more ear wax, compounding the problem • Things like hearing aids, earplugs, or earbuds hinder the natural movement of ear wax if worn too many hours of the day. Stress can cause an increase in the production of ear wax. • To resolve problems with ear wax build-up, experts recommend a drop or two of mineral oil, glycerin, or olive oil to soften the wax. Then use a rubber bulb syringe to run roomtemperature water through the ear, tilting the head afterwards to let it drain out. • Using cotton swabs to dry out the inner ear after swimming or showering is a bad idea because they are very fragile when the tiny ear hairs are wet. • People prone to swimmer’s ear infections can use a few drops of rubbing alcohol in the ear. The land was barely suitable for cattle ranching and alfalfa farming. Bob Byers drew water from the underground aquifer for his cattle and crops. • Byers lost 50 acres of their property when I-15 was completed, connecting Los Angeles to Las Vegas and bringing much traffic. Then, in 1963, cattle prices bottomed out. • Bob Byers created an artificial lake from springs in the area so his family members could swim. Then he wondered if he could make a little money by charging other people to swim. Bob named it Lake Dolores after his wife, and it was opened to the public in 1962. • Byers kept adding new attractions: a campground, waterslides, ziplines, high diving boards, a giant trapeze, and more. Water that once went for irrigating alfalfa now created three lakes: one for swimming, one for boating, and one for fishing. Admission was 50 cents in 1969 and increased to $1.50. • Byers added a lazy river, bumper boats, gocarts, a restaurant, an arcade, and motocross trails. • Eventually there were seven lakes. Attendance peaked in the mid-1970s and 1980s. Lake Dolores is considered to be the country’s first waterpark. • Then, there was a gasoline crisis in 1979. Business dropped off. There was little supervision and few rules. With federal safety standards tightening, Bob Byers closed the park in 1989 and put it up for sale. • It was purchased in 1990 by a group of investors called Lake Dolores Group LLC. The revamped park opened on the 4th of July, 1998, as Rock-a-Hoola with a rock and roll theme and (continued on the next page) Tidbits® For advertising rates call 716.807.7729 of Niagara Region Page 7

It attracted crowds of a thousand people per day. • The park suffered from financial problems, not only because revenue raised was plowed back into expanding, but also because one investor made off with millions. • The final blow came on May 29, 1999. The park closed at the end of the day as usual. Water to the waterslides was turned off. An hour later, 23-year-old pool tech James Mason arrived early for his evening shift. He asked a buddy to turn the water back on to the DooWop Slide so he could go down. • Each slide had a reservoir pool at the end to catch riders and stop their slide. This pool emptied out when the water was turned off to the DooWop Slide. Mason knew this but thought if the water was turned on when he began climbing the staircase to the top of the slide, enough water would have collected at the bottom to cushion his landing. Unfortunately, he was misGREAT WALL OF CHINA (cont’d): taken. The collision left him a quadriplegic. • Mason tried to collect worker’s comp, claiming that he had been testing the equipment as part of his job, but the park owners argued in court that he had been off the clock. In the end, the court awarded Mason $4.4 million. At the time, the company was already $3 million in debt, and this judgment was the final nail in the coffin. They declared bankruptcy and closed the park after just three seasons in business. • With Bob Byers now deceased, Dolores Byers regained the property by default. She sold it again in 2002 to a new group of investors and died shortly afterwards. Renamed the Discovery Water Park, it closed in 2004. • In March of 2020, the San Bernadino County Board of Supervisors announced a five-year plan to bring the derelict park back to life. The plans were never instigated. Long abandoned, the site serves as a backdrop for apocalyptic TV shows. Tidbits® Page 8 of Niagara Region For advertising rates call 716.807.7729
