Message from Editorial Board

Rtn. Janet Fanaian
President RCKM 22-23

Once again, we are moving forward with new goals and
raising the bar. Struggling our might and energy to do
good for the world. I am happy to bring to you this
September issue of our RC Kompally – Medchal
newsletter which “DISHA”.
Our moto of “Service above self, one profits most who serves the best ” is on
our crest. This is the 34th year of our club Kompally Medchal. Our club has
touched a new height every year, yet there has been a continuity in doing good
to the society such as Literacy & Education Awards, Medical & Cataract
operations camps, food support to the old age home. Economic and Vocational
support to women and girl child. Providing Water and sanitation in villages are
few to name some.

In addition to above projects, this year; we have adopted another Government
school in Dollapally village, to have vocational training for youth specially girls,
safe drinking water station facilities in public places, Waste segregation &
plastic collection centers under environment, medical & hygiene camps, peace
education & appreciation of the unsung heroes, etc.

As Rotary International president Jennifer Jones the first woman president of
Rotary International after 117 years of Rotary inception, I think I am very lucky
with such theme as “Imagine Rotary. “Imagination is more important than
knowledge,” said Bernard Shaw. We as Rotarians need to imagine, believe, and
join to achieve it because every action originates from some imaginary thought.

We are lucky to have a dynamic group in this club who love to give and be of
service. This year too we have from the charter day to the present day we have
tight filled calendar with activities and busy with projects of varied magnitude.

MESSAGE FROM RI PRESIDENT
RI PRESIDENT 2022-23
Jennifer Jones

We’ve all taken our own path to become a member of
Rotary. Some of you joined because your father was a
Rotarian. Some of us signed up because an employer
tapped us on the shoulder and asked us to attend a
meeting. Others became members only after a U.S.
Supreme Court ruling made it possible. Yet each of us
entered through one mechanism — an invitation. An invitation that unlocks
our imaginations and allows us to know that everything and anything is
possible. Each one of us has that same opportunity the honour to extend an
invitation.

It is awe-inspiring to imagine how we can look out across our communities and
identify our future leaders. It’s often tempting to attract people who are exactly
like us. It’s a special form of ingenuity to consider how people who are
seemingly very different can, in fact, share our values and have some of those
same talents, just waiting to be unleashed. It’s time for Rotary to take our next
step in advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) across our organization.

Embracing an experience where people feel included is more than just making
our membership numbers more diverse. It’s about making our meetings and
events places where we can speak openly and honestly with each other, where
our members feel welcome and safe. This means removing barriers for entry
and opening doors for inclusion. Our values remain our strength and our
commitment to excellence requires us to maintain high standards for our
members as well. I believe we are all committed and determined to advancing
DEI across Rotary. This is rooted in the deepest traditions of our organization,
and it will ensure that we remain vibrant and relevant for decades to come.

A few years ago, our Rotary Board set the ambitious goal of increasing the
share of female members to 30 percent by 2023. We have less than a year to
go, but I believe we can meet and exceed this target. We need Rotary leaders
to rise from every continent, culture, and creed. We need young members and
young thinkers to take on larger roles and responsibilities.

5

Rotary’s Seven areas of focus

• Peace and conflict prevention/resolution.
• Disease prevention and treatment.
• Water and sanitation.
• Maternal and child health.
• Basic education and literacy.
• Economic and community development.
• The Environment.

6

To be or not to be a Rotarian!!!!

Rtn. Suman
Secretary RC KM 22-23

Chances are this question, in one form or another, will
be asked from you. You will probably want someone
to ask you so or you bring it up in your conversation
with someone who is thinking about becoming one. Whatever is said in reply
almost certainly will be drawn from the Rotarian’s own personal experience as
a member of a Rotary Club. A Rotarian believes in Rotary and in what Rotary
stands for. Above all, Rotarians believe in
1. “Service Above Self”, Rotary’s international motto.
2. Rotarians believe in sharing Rotary with others.
3. Being a Rotarian means more than the sum of what a Rotarian believes
about Rotary;
4. it means maintaining high ethical standards in one’s business, one’s
profession, and in one’s personal life.
5. Being a Rotarian means having the opportunity to experience the warm
fellowship of a Rotary Club which can greatly expand one’s circle of
acquaintance, foster lifelong friendships, and help one do for his or her
community what he or she might never accomplish alone.
6. Being a Rotarian means to be actively involved in the affairs and service
projects of one’s club.
7. Rotarians look for ways to get involved. Rotarians demonstrate the
strength of their commitment to Rotary in the service they render to their
club, through their club to the community, and through the Rotary
Foundation to people throughout the world.
8. Being a Rotarian is a way of life and can be a satisfying lifelong
adventure for those who are willing to give of themselves to enjoy and
benefit from all that Rotary has to offer.

GIMMA SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP
MY FIRST AND BEST VISIT TO GIMMA

By Rtn. Divya Shah

On 15th August on the occasion of the 75th year of
independence our Club organized Azadi ka Amruth
Mahostav program at 5 Government schools namely:
Gimma Adilabad, ZPH Kistapur, ZPH Doolappally, ZPH
Dabaguntapally, ZPH Singaram Kondeti Cheruvu, where
700 prizes in the form of gold silver bronze medals of
Rotary were awarded to the meritorious students. More than
1000 students from 5 schools participated enthusiastically
in the competitions. Medals of Rotary were given to the
winners of the competitions and sweets were distributed to
all. At Gimma school scholarships of RS 6000 cash awards,
300 notebooks and sports items and Rotary medals were
donated to school & merit students. These awards brought
such delight to the little hearts of children that we could not
imagine.

On 15th August we started the journey at 4am. We had to travel four hours to
reach Gimma in Adilabad. That day it rained so heavily that we had to be helped
to go through flooded roads but we managed to reach on time for the celebration
of Independence day . I enjoyed visiting this wonderful school and am thankful
to Shri Narayan Rao for the opportunity to visit school & experience this remote
village. This village school has is equal if not surpass any school in the city.
Due to Rotary Scholarship children perform very well and received several
entries into college of Excellence. This award seemingly very small but it
impacted the school and community greatly.

During the program children showed amazing talent, they are not less than our
city schools’. The cultural activities, dance , costume, fancy dress of freedom
fighter, speech, singing.. I never felt that I was sitting in a village school
program. Scholarship really encourage children’s talents. It is not amount but
recognition and respect they get in such programs, that is more than any amount.
Really noble service initiated by Shri Narayan Rao sir. The master of ceremony,
was like a professional event manager with so much entertainment, motivation
quotes and all in a smooth flow.

Teachers were really dedicated for the development of the students. Anuradha
Madam, Head mistress of the school, is so humble and focused/ concern about
school development and children’s future career growth. Since school is up to
10th grade, she is also preparing students for the admission in intermediate
school. I had interacted with girls and asked about their career goals in life. I
am happy to know that almost all have thought of some profession like medical,
teacher, dancer, software engineer. Girls were confident and communicative.

It all started with Rtn. Narayan Rao in 1998 who thought of doing something
for his village school in Gimma village, Adilabad, which is about 300 km away

9

from Hyderabad. In 2009 he donated an amount in memory of his late father
Sri.M.Laxmanrao who was the first educated person from Gimma village. Later
donation to the Rotary Club of Medchal and wished that the interest from this
amount be given towards scholarship for topper students of 10th grade Board
Exam. The award certificate was initially Rs 4000 cash later it was upscaled to
Rs. 6000/-(six thousand). This year in addition few sports equipment’s and
notebooks were also donated to the school. The action brought many supporters
among his family and created interest among the Rotarians who also supported
generously. The local leader and few villagers came forward to donate & repair
the school after the Rotary’s first step. The chain reaction had great impact on
villagers, parents and staff of the school. Most of all students progressed. This
small sincere act changed the shape of the village. School acquired a library and
computer room. Students from private schools joined Gimma ZPH. At present
the school has100 percent pass in 10th board exam. Four students got into
NMMS scholarship & Centre of Excellence in Education. Overall my visit to
Gimma was a special experience and I wish our Rotary Club should adopt more
such schools.

Jyothi Reddy
A simple soft spoken millionaire hails
from a Telangana daily wage worker

By Janet Fanaian

I am happy to introduce to our readers one of our
Rotary Club Kompally Medchal members
Jyothi Reddy. She is famous yet so down to
earth that she wins your heart instantly. Having
gone to the edge of suicide and seen the face of
death, revolting against defeat and returning to
live for the love of her children makes her
surmount hurdles of life with determination.
Jyothi Reddy is a girl who walked barefoot to school, she is now CEO of Key
Software Solutions Inc. in Phoenix, US, with a company that notched up a
turnover of USD 15 million in 2016! is an extraordinary woman on top now,
who grew up in an orphanage in spite of having parents.

Born in a poor farmer family in a village in Warangal district, Telangana, father
kept her in an orphanage at nine, along with her younger sister as he felt they
would at least get food, a place to stay and learn some skills to earn a living,
where she studied from class five to ten. “I missed Amma terribly but had to
act as if I didn’t have a mother. There was water shortage, no proper bathrooms,
bugs in the food. I walked two and half kilometres to the Government Girls
High School barefoot. On the way I crossed St. Joseph’s School and envied the
lucky well-dressed students with socks and shoes.” As a student Jyothi was
always a back-bencher as she was very conscious of her torn clothes. Former
Indian president APJ Kalam once said: ‘The best brains of the nation may be
found on the last benches of the classroom’ and Jyothi proved this true by faring
very well in Class ten. While at school she took vocational course on tailoring,
ironing, washing clothes. Jyothi helped the orphanage superintendent with
household work. Soon she realized, she needed to study to have a decent job.
She begged her superintendent to give her Rs 110 for admission into Inter BiPC
(Biology, Physics, Chemistry) in Andhra Balika College, but he tore up the form
in front of a petrified Jyothi. Soon, after Class 10, barely 16, she was married
off to her mother’s distant relative, Sammi Reddy. Misfortune followed her as
Sammi, a farmer, hardly had half an acre of land of his own and Jyothi was
forced to work in the paddy fields to earn Rs 5 for 10 hours of hard labour.

Alongside the birth of two daughters, Beena and Bindu, within three years of
marriage, she started to work as a Night School Teacher at the local Nehru Yuva
Kendra for a salary of Rs 120. In 1988-1989 she joined as a National Service
Volunteer , worked as a librarian and determinedly obtained a BA degree from
Dr B.R. Ambedkar Open University in 1994 followed by postgraduate degree
in 1997 from the Kakatiya University.
After her graduation she joined as a Government Special Teacher for a salary
of around Rs 400. Staying in a small rented room, she juggled looking after her
daughters and travelling for two hours to reach work. Even here, she utilized
this time to sell sarees to her co-passengers at a small but useful profit of Rs 20
per saree, selling around four pieces a day. She got the job of a Government
Teacher for Rs 6,000 after her post-graduation.

11

One day a maternal cousin visited her from the US. As she confidently emerged
from her fancy car, donning cool sunglasses, Jyothi was completely bowled over
by her bold assurance. She started chasing her dream of working in the US. She
completed her post graduate diploma in computer application to get the
eligibility to work in the US. A friend, who had a company in California, sent
her a job offer and on May 2, 2000 Jyothi flew to the US on a B1 visa, leaving
her two daughters in a missionary hostel.
She took on jobs big or small; in gas station, video shop, baby-sitting and as a
recruiter. A year and a half of struggle and missing her daughters, she came
back to India in September 2001 to visit them. One day while she was waiting
for her visa to be stamped before going to Phoenix, US, it suddenly burst into
her mind that she could start a consulting company to help others with the
paperwork involved with visa processing required for the US. Her first
entrepreneurship was on its way. With her savings of USD 40,000, on the
auspicious day of Vijaya Dasami, she launched Key Software Solutions Inc., a
private limited company, in Phoenix, on October 22, 2001. Her company
extended and soon she got her daughters to the US and now both are married
and working as software engineers. The whole family lives under one roof in
Phoenix. Key Software Solution Inc. is clearly doing well under Jyothi’s ace
leadership. The very first year there was minimal profit of USD 1,68,000 and
just after the third year she hit a million dollars. The latest turnover of the
company is USD 15 million with 100 employees placed in her company. Today
Jyothi has four houses in the US and a mansion in Kompally, Hyderabad.
Not having forgotten where she came from, Jyothi is also passionate about the
welfare of orphans and underprivileged. When she got a hearing- and speech-
impaired girl in Hanamkonda married to a similarly disabled boy, in a generous
way, the wedding made headlines in local news. “I vow to conduct 99 more
such weddings for less fortunate people,” says Jyothi Reddy.
Jyothi’s story is so inspirational that her autobiography titled ‘Aina, Nenu
Odipoledu’ which means "YET .,IAM NOT DEFEATED” in Telugu by
Emesco Publication in 2013. “Yes, I have it all today and I have no regrets,”
Jyothi says, “I am grateful for the hardships that came my way as they made me
what I am today.”
