GreenPSME Page 23 Mel, as she is fondly called, belongs to Gen X, born in 1965 to 1980, ages 44-59. She is between the after-baby boomers and before the millennials. She is part of Gen X, who refused to be defined and witnessed some of the world’s most significant advancements, including space exploration and the development of the computer. Gen X is considered the ”middle child” generation because of its small size compared to the baby boomer and millennial generations. As a Gen Xer, Mel is typically described as resourceful, independent, and good at maintaining a work-life balance. She was once married. But a single parent who did well in raising her kids, whom she is proud of for their values and character. Mel was raised with the kind of autonomy and independence. It means she appreciates the opportunity to work independently, make decisions, and take ownership of their work, desiring liberation in the roles. As for her education, Mel graduated from the mechanical engineering profession but made her bachelor of law or Juris doctor a fallback in case there is a need in the future. She pursued the highest level of engineering as a professional mechanical engineer, which most ladies don’t want to explore because the profession is taken by most men. Mel is different from some of our lady engineers. Working in the government nowadays is so toxic because of the office requirements that work-life balance is sometimes neglected. But Mel, as a Gen Xer, sees to it that her time is balanced between her work, family, business, PSME, God, and zerolove life. We are sure of her love life as we have seen her always with the PSME during her tenure as president, immediate former president, and member or committee chairman. Her work experience, as shown in her CV, started as a marketing executive, then tried the government office in labor and employment for almost 15 years now. She started from a lower rank until she was promoted as the supervising labor and employment officer for almost six years. Her experience in human capital is supported by her being a leader in the PSME, which made her a dynamic leader. We can say beauty and brain are seen in Mel, and men cannot help but sigh because she doesn’t want to entertain her love life anymore. PSME is the love of her life. There is no question about it. She was and is busy being a resource in various areas of safety, healthcare, labor policy, construction policy, equipment safety, inspection, labor relations, human productivity, hazards and risk management, and many others. Mel received so many awards from DOLE, PSME, A third runner-up Lakambining Filipina in 2018, 2019 Inspiring Filipina Engineer, and served as in different positions in the PSME chapter and national as a member, secretary, chapter president, national auditor, VP, and National President. GreenPSME Page 23 I called him Mr. PSME, JerAs, or Derek Ramsay- they look alike. I found JerAs impressive while serving the PSME during his term in 2021. Right after his presidency, JerAs supported former president Melanie Banayos during her term and continued to work with the same passion during President Boyet’s term. His willingness to serve PSME is beyond his expectations. His record shows six positions held at PTC, 26 posts, the highest as National President of PSME, and two jobs at a related organization. For awards and recognitions, he received 13 certificates from PSME. For conferences and seminars, he participated in 35 events. In education, he was a multi-awarded student for ten times. Isn’t it amazing? JerAs was born in Aroroy, Masbate, for five decades and four years. He is a single parent with lovely children in their teens. He started his elementary years at Aroroy East Elementary School in Masbate but transferred and finished at Buyuan Elementary School in Tigbauan, Iloilo. He completed his secondary education at Guimbal National High School, Iloilo. He worked in a mining company in Iloilo before pursuing college because of poverty. Working as a miner at a young age made him a better teenager. This was done with the help of his uncle and some connections with the mining company in Masbate. For that experience as a laborer, he came to his rescue to proceed with his engineering plan after eighteen months of labor work. His philosophy then was the slogan, “IF OTHERS CAN, WHY CAN’T I.” This virtue, of course, cannot be fulfilled without guidance from the Lord Almighty. He chose the University of San Agustin in Iloilo City as his Alma Mater, taking up a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. There were so many ups and downs during his studies. In his first year, he was fortunate to have his savings as a laborer in the mining company and with the support from his Auntie. The following years were nightmares for him. But the Almighty God was so supportive in his college journey that he was admitted to the track and field team and was provided a scholarship. This fortunate support and God’s intervention helped him to complete his mechanical engineering degree. A fully dedicated, committed, hardworking person with the ambition and passion to succeed will get it. With a college diploma and skills, he started his career from the bottom and up the ladder. Though his passion and dedication, he is now the current CEO of his dynamic engineering company, which caters to mechanical engineering and construction services. Aside from his profession, he is proficient in using MS Office software. JerAs is not a linguist but can speak English, Tagalog, Ilonggo, Masbateñu and a little Cebuano.
