A Time for Renewal. This is a very special issue of your alumni magazine, The THIRD DEGREE. First, this issue is being made available to all alumni of the Eta Chapter, both members and prospective members. Second, this issue was called for and, for the most part, was drafted by the members of the active chapter in the pursuit of communications with you, their alumni members. Third, this is a solely digital distribution - no killing a small number of trees in order to print and mail copies to our members. The members of the active chapter have an abundance of great news to share. And, being that they have completed the Spring 2023 semester, they have a moment to “bring you up to speed” on the news from #2 Fraternity Row and share with you what they have accomplished of late and what they plan in the near future. A fair number of those who are reading these words have never before seen a copy of our magazine. We thought that all Eta Alumni, members or not, should receive the good news from the active chapter and, in having the chance to read this publication and learn a bit more about their alumni association, might want to join us for this, our 13th year. We hope that you and yours are in good health and high spirits. We hope that new family members serve to amaze and excite you. And we hope that memories of those we have lost during these past years now serve to comfort and compel you. While many businesses fail within five years following incorporation, your alumni association is chugging along. Perhaps with fewer members, but we hope that you will step forward and help with recruiting and renewals and make our 13th year a record-breaking triumph. We hope that you will consider supporting our initiatives, and stepping forward to make our 13th year a memorable one. We hope that you will read each and every page of this issue. The topics are many, but each and every one of them remain consistent with our Cardinal Principles: To Promote Brotherhood, Stimulate Scholarship and Develop Character. For some of you, some of the content herein may be a review; for some of you it will be new again. For all we hope that it will serve as evidence that our reason for being is to lend our Time, Talent and Treasure to the benefit of all members of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa at the University of Maryland. Enjoy the read. Sincerely...and always Damn Proud, The Executive Committee of the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa 2 July 2023 The THIRD DEGREE Executive Committee Todd B. I am grateful to serve as the President of Phi Sigma Kappa, being elected by my peers is a great honor and one that I do not take lightly. I look up to and hope to live up to the reputations of all of the presidents before me, who have set the fraternity on the right path towards greatness. As president I have had the opportunity to work with many organizations, committees, and councils within the University of Maryland Greek life system, all of which have let me make an impact in the name of Phi Sigma Kappa. As PSK continues to do great things around campus, we continue to push the boundaries on what a fraternity can accomplish. I hope to leave a lasting impact on the chapter and the community surrounding it. The chapter had a busy year and we are excited for the semester to come. During the last two semesters the chapter has had some great events for brothers. One that brothers look forward to the most is Away Weekend. In December and May the chapter travelled to Lake Anna and Virginia Beach, respectively, for our semesterly Away Weekend. The brothers enjoyed some much needed time away with partners and friends enjoying these two fantastic weekends. Our executive board and Away Weekend chairs all did an amazing job to ensure the success and smooth operation of both events. Additionally, we were able to welcome brothers’ parents and families to College Park in November and April. Brothers took the initiative and allowed us to host our parents day in their backyards and we had great turnout on both days! Families enjoyed backyard games, food, drinks, and the Maryland football and lacrosse games during each season. We appreciated all the parents that were able to make it and love the support that they show for our fraternity. At this year's Homecoming and Greek Week the chapter had some great events with our sorority pairings Sigma Delta Tau and Zeta Tau Alpha respectively. Both of these week-long celebrations were filled with fun events such as a basketball tournament (in which we were able to host many games on our home court at #2 Fraternity Row!), soccer tournaments, bonfires, and ice cream socials. Additionally, during Homecoming, many brothers had a blast at the Alumni Tailgate put together by the Eta Alumni Association. We are appreciative of those who were able to make it out and come meet the brothers, and we can’t wait to see you all this upcoming semester! Be sure to join the Eta Alumni Association in order to stay up to date on all of the Alumni Events and keep current with the local chapter news! To continue, in the spring we had our formal in Washington, D.C. put together by our outstanding Formal Chairs. We were able to provide a fantastic night for all brothers and their dates to get dressed up and hit the city. The night was filled with entertainment and excitement and the chapter is ecstatic for the next formal to follow. We have a lot of ambitious plans for this summer and the upcoming semester. With the support of all Eta Chapter members I have no doubt that these goals will come (continued on next page) Eඍൺ Cඁൺඉඍൾඋ Nൾඐඌ News Briefs from the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa at the University of Maryland From the Desk of The President Parker Homann ‘24 July 2023 The THIRD DEGREE 3 Parker Homann Statistics & Computer Science Major Holland, PA Class of 2025 Photo courtesy of Parker Homann

With a fast-approaching fall rush, the chapter looks to expand numerically and accept new brothers as the Alpha Alpha class of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa. I am damn proud of everything that this chapter has done, and am extremely excited for what is to come. As we continue to grow and succeed, we will continue sharing all that the Eta Chapter has accomplished. We ask that each of you join the Eta Alumni Association so that, in a combined effort between the local chapter and alumni association, we can continue to grow the fraternity. For years the Eta Alumni Association has supported the Eta Chapter and served as the link between the chapter and alumni. By becoming a member you will become engaged again in the fraternity that you once held so dear to your heart. I hope to see you all soon! The Omega Class 6 July 2023 The THIRD DEGREE This past spring the Eta Chapter had the pleasure of welcoming to the fraternity it’s 26th Associate Class since 2009, comprised of 18 outstanding associates. Led by Inductor Jack Van Dopp, this associate class did exceptionally well during their new member education following the Cardinal Journey. When asked about the Omega Class, Inductor Van Dopp said, “I could not be more proud of the 18 members of the Omega Class. From the Ritual of Association right through to their Initiation, these guys impressed me every day. It was an honor to serve as their Inductor, and I am excited to see what they have in store for the fraternity as Brothers.” During their Association Process, they became closer than friends and formed true bonds of brotherhood. Their character and conduct impressed every member of the brotherhood, and every Brother has high praise for these 18 men. Omega Class president Phil Mercado said, “during the process of getting to know my Brothers of Phi Sigma Kappa, I formed strong bonds with the Brothers of my class and was able to get to know each person’s unique personality. I was able to make great connections with the older Brothers, who guided me throughout the process. During that time, I discovered the true meaning of brotherhood, and I am excited to be able to welcome the next class into the Fraternity” Phil, throughout the entire process, and thereafter, served as a leader and a pillar for the Omega Class. He was essential in organizing and communicating with his class and the rest of the Fraternity. In working with Inductor Van Dopp, he ensured the rest of his class stayed on top of their responsibilities and learned all the rich history of Phi Sigma Kappa. Another Omega Class member, Ryan Morris, talked about his time during the process. He said “the Association Process brought me closer to my class and offered me a deeper understanding of what it means to be a Phi Sig. Joining the Eta Chapter was the best decision of my life!” Hearing from the associates how much they enjoyed and appreciated the Association Process brings pride and joy to all the members of the Eta Chapter, as well as excitement for the impact that they are going to make as Brothers. Several members of the Omega Class have already taken up leadership roles for the Fall ‘23 semester. Andrew Cardillo will be serving as the chapter’s Sexual Assault Liaison, Daniel Paz will be heading recruitment as a rush chair, and Phil Mercado will be helping the chapter as our Internal Social Chair! The Eta Chapter is extremely proud of these 18 new members and ready to welcome the next class of Phi Sigs into the chapter during the Fall ’23 semester. Improving Our Community 8 July 2023 The THIRD DEGREE Sustainability In the Spring of 2023, Sustainability Chairman Aiden Fletcher led PSK in organizing and participating in sustainability events in the College Park Community. The University of Maryland has proposed ambitious sustainability goals, such as carbon neutrality for the campus by the year 2025. In order to promote these goals, the university administration has called upon the Greek life community to educate and participate in sustainable actions. To help emphasize the importance of recycling at the University of Maryland, the brothers of the Eta Chapter collaborated with Delta Gamma and Kappa Alpha Theta in a dumpster painting event. The dumpsters look amazing and will be displayed on campus for years to come! Along with education and awareness on recycling, we also directly contributed to improving the campus community and the city of College Park. In April of 2023, over 40 brothers spent the day walking around Old Town picking up cans, plastic, and other trash to clean up the streets. A food drive hosted in the chapter house allowed brothers to donate their unused non-perishables to the Campus Pantry. Approximately 20% of the students at the University of Maryland don’t have access to affordable, nutritious food, and food drives like these really help to make a difference. The chapter plans on participating in more drives during the upcoming semester in order to continue lending support to UMD students in need. As a result of our efforts, the chapter was Green Chapter Certified by the University. PHI SIGMA KAPPA IS NOW GREEN CHAPTER CERTIFIED BY UMD July 2023 The THIRD DEGREE 9 Philanthropy & Community Service Brothers of the Eta Chapter remain highly active in philanthropy and community service. In the Spring of 2023, we organized a rose-selling fundraiser the week before Valentine’s Day. All proceeds went to the Mackenzie Rose Foundation, a charity that supports childhood cancer patients and their families. Brother Michael Gardiner, as a board member of the charity, brought forward the amazing opportunity to help out this foundation, and Brothers and Philanthropy chairmen Chase Clark and Matthew Laddy spearheaded the organization of the rose selling. For more information on the great work the Mackenzie Rose Foundation is involved in, visit them at https://www.mackenzierosefoundation.org/. In the spring 2023 semester, brothers of the Eta Chapter registered more than 500 community service hours! Brothers could be found volunteering at local organizations, such as A Wider Circle, a Silver Spring-based organization that moves and organizes furniture for those that can’t; or Shepherd's Table, an organization where volunteers serve food to those less fortunate. During this upcoming school year the Eta Chapter has ambitious goals to continue to serve the College Park community and The Special Olympics. Our Philanthropy chairmen have been working tirelessly to create a campus-wide basketball tournament to be hosted at the basketball courts at 2 Fraternity Row! We cannot wait to host the event and raise as much money as possible for the Special Olympics. Please stay tuned for word from the Eta Alumni Association on ways to support the Eta Chapter’s philanthropy and community service endeavors! The Eta Chapter is proud to welcome not one, but two new advisors who will assist Jay Gobeil as they form the Chapter Advisor Executive Board. Brothers Alexander Dulla and Jason Herman were welcomed to the team this spring and have already made lasting impacts upon the chapter. Brother Alexander Dulla (‘21) recently graduated from his master's program at the University of Maryland. He will be attending the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. Being a recently graduated brother and living close by, he will serve as a valuable asset to the chapter! Having held several positions within the fraternity such as Philanthropy Chair and Audit Committee member in the past, he provides the chapter with a plethora of knowledge and understanding and will be able to assist in a multitude of ways. We are super excited to welcome Alex to the Chapter Advisor Executive Board and are confident that his presence will benefit the chapter and all its members for years to come. Brother Jason Herman (‘92) attended Fairleigh Dickinson University, graduating with a degree in PoliticoMilitary Analysis. As CEO and President of OnePoint Business Solutions, Jason brings an abundance of knowledge and expertise from the business world and is a vital aid to the chapter. Bringing a higher level of understanding of business into the fraternity will ensure the great success of the Eta Chapter. The Executive Board is appreciative of Jason’s talent and guidance and all that he provides for the chapter. With these two stellar editions to the Chapter Advisor team, the Eta Chapter is in great hands! Chapter Advisor Jay Gobeil continues his search for talented alumni with an interest in advising our chapter. Advisors are being sought to offer advice and counsel to each of the chapter’s elected officers and many of our chapter chairmen. If you are interested in giving back to our chapter in this way, please write to [email protected]. July 2023 The THIRD DEGREE 11 NEW Chapter Advisors Gobeil Named Interim Chapter Advisor On March 11, 2023 Brother Jay Gobeil ‘12 accepted an invitation to serve as Interim Chapter Advisor. Gobeil stepped back into a role that he previously held until replaced by Brother Glenn Hall ’91, who recently announced a need to attend to urgent personal affairs. Gobeil was initiated into Phi Sigma Kappa in March of 2010 and was an integral part of the re-colonization of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa. He served as the President of both the Eta Colony and Eta Chapter, being one of very few Brothers to have been re-elected to that highest leadership post. He graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Supply Chain Management, and is now an Account Executive at Alation. Alation is a venture-backed, B2B enterprise software company based in Silicon Valley. Its solutions are focused on data catalog, analytics, and data management. Founded in 2012, Alation is credited with creating the data catalog product category. He also previously served in professional roles in the employ of MuleSoft, Oracle and the Target Corporation. Gobeil is a Member of the 4th Degree of Phi Sigma Kappa and earned his commemorative 10-Year Membership Pin from the Eta Alumni Association in 2022. In returning to his previous role, Gobeil will serve as the primary advisor to the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa at the University of Maryland, most recently reported to number 73 members strong.

Officer Training in Atlanta, Georgia 12 July 2023 The THIRD DEGREE In February of 2023, Chapter President Parker Homann and Treasurer Tom Hyland had the opportunity to travel down to Atlanta, Georgia for the Phi Sigma Kappa National Conclave. This year's training offered many insights into the current issues that chapters are facing nationwide and allowed our executive board to learn essential information for the upcoming year. Members of the Phi Sigma Kappa International Headquarters Staff informed the brothers about effective risk management, budgeting, and chapter standards. Additionally, they heard from Phired Up!, a recruitment organization specifically tailored to help fraternities and sororities. Continuing their journey at the National Conclave, President Homann and Treasurer Hyland found immense value in hearing about other chapters and their experiences. The opportunity to network with fellow Presidents and Treasurers provided a platform for sharing insights, learning from both mistakes and successes, and fostering relationships within the Phi Sig community. By engaging in conversations with counterparts from different chapters, Parker and Tom were able to gain a broader perspective on the challenges and triumphs faced by chapters nationwide. Moreover, the Conclave facilitated round table discussions and interactions with Alumni and Chapter Advisors, adding another layer of expertise and wisdom to the experience. These seasoned individuals, with their years of involvement and dedication to Phi Sigma Kappa, shared their ideas and tactics relating to chapter operations, divulging their wealth of knowledge on to the brothers. Being able to engage in meaningful conversations with Alumni and Chapter Advisors allowed the team to gather advice and guidance on various aspects of running a successful chapter, such as philanthropic endeavors, fundraising, and financial management. Another significant aspect of the Conclave was the opportunity to engage directly with directors and professionals who could address specific questions and concerns faced by the chapter. Whether it was seeking guidance on risk management protocols, budgeting techniques, or any other chapter-related matters, the chance to have face-to-face conversations proved to be immensely beneficial. These connections being formed in person allow the chapter to form personable relationships for future support and advice. Parker and Tom could discuss their chapter's unique circumstances and receive tailored advice from experts from IHQ, allowing them to gain clarity and find solutions to the challenges they were currently facing. One Chapter Advisor shared several philanthropy initiatives that had successful turnouts and donations rates for his chapter. One successful endeavor involved gathering local artists from around the community and school, who donated their art pieces to bid on, with percentages of the bids being donated to The Special Olympics. Among other ideas, exceptional feedback and support was provided about operations of philanthropy events for which the chapter could not be more thankful. With an abundance of knowledge and experiences gained at the National Conclave, Parker and Tom eagerly relayed this information upon their return to The Eta Chapter. The active members, who were excited to hear about the Conclave, eagerly absorbed the insights and new information shared by their President and Treasurer. The accounts of successful recruitment strategies, effective risk management practices, and other valuable lessons resonated with the members, inspiring them to implement these best practices within the chapter. The training offered at the conclave was effective and continues to allow our officers to serve the chapter in the best possible capacity. With effective leadership comes a happy and growing chapter. July 2023 The THIRD DEGREE 13 Programming Takes Center Stage A major part of the Eta Chapter’s campaign for Most Improved Organization recognition was our renewed commitment to creating consistently high-quality and accessible programming. We believe that the expectations we set within the chapter are key to fostering an environment of inclusivity and belonging, providing a solid foundation upon which our brotherhood is built. The best way to set consistent and enforceable expectations is to provide programming that reflects the value that the chapter places on the maintenance of its standards for Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Character. Over the course of this past academic year, our desire to create and maintain these high standards led us to improve the quality and the seriousness with which we promote our programming for three core points of expectation: Mental Health and Wellness, Diversity and Inclusion, and Sexual Assault Prevention. Mental health and wellness is not only an incredibly important topic, but also one which many communities struggle to address adequately. This is especially true of spaces dominated by potentially toxic masculinity like a fraternity, which is why we’re Damn Proud to have won the Most Outstanding Mental and Health and Wellness Programming Award which designates the best program throughout the entirety of Greek Life. Our former mental health chair and recently graduated brother, Jett Clarke, created a fantastic program which sought to foster an inclusive and ever-present dialogue on mental health, creating an environment in which brothers feel comfortable speaking up because they know that they have a robust support system. Diversity and inclusion is another topic at the forefront of societal discourse, especially in historically exclusive spaces like Greek Life. As such, we recognize the importance of setting and enforcing inclusive expectations to create a space in which all feel welcome and accepted. As a result, we were named a finalist for the Most Outstanding Diversity and Inclusion Programming Award, an award we aim to take home ourselves next year. Finally, as young men involved in Greek Life, the topic of Sexual Assault Prevention must always be at the forefront of our decision-making processes. We must not only regulate our own behavior, but we also must ensure that we promote an environment of safety and security for ourselves and those with whom we interact. We recently renewed our commitment to the Ten Terp Plan for Sexual Assault Prevention, a university-run program that facilitates dialogue among the brothers about power-based violence in our community. We’re incredibly proud of our chapter’s commitment to furthering our education and implementing actionable steps that embody our attitudes and commitments. Brothers of the Year Announced 14 July 2023 The THIRD DEGREE This semester at the chapters away weekend at Virginia Beach, we had the honor of naming Brendan O’Boyle and Jared Watenberg as the Brothers of the Year! Brother O’Boyle served in a multitude of chair positions in the Eta Chapter such as the Public Relations chair and Apparel chair. Throughout the year, Brendan created amazing graphics, social media posts, and apparel for the fraternity that helped boost our image and rapport on campus. Outside of those chairs, Brendan is a brother to be relied upon, helping out with any question or concern brought his way by brothers in need. “I have tried to put as much as possible into this fraternity to make it the best it can be, and although I don’t expect anything in return, I truly appreciate being named brother of the year. It means for me that my effort has not gone unnoticed, and I hope I live up to all of the previous brothers that have left their impact on this fraternity enough to be named brother of the year. I’d like to thank everyone who’s ever put in something to this fraternity for making it a home for me.” - Brendan O’Boyle Brother Watenberg is a past president of the Eta Chapter and was rewarded for his tremendous effort and commitment to the chapter. After his term as president was complete, Jared served as an advisor to the executive board and later became a part of the Brotherhood committee. Here he created events and activities for the chapter, in addition to serving as a role model for all brothers. “Winning brother of the year really was the culmination of my experience at Phi Sigma Kappa. It was an amazing feeling to know that all the brothers saw how much I cared about the chapter. When brotherhood is strong the chapter thrives. It was one of my favorite memories that I have had in college.” - Jared Watenberg The Eta Chapter is Damn Proud of both Brendan and Jared and appreciative of everything that they have done for the chapter! We look forward to finding and recognizing those dedicated individuals who will follow in their footsteps.

To wrap up a truly fantastic year, the Eta Chapter was invited to attend the 29th Annual Greek Awards hosted by the University of Maryland Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life (DFSL). Coming into the event the Eta Chapter was a finalist for several awards: Green Chapter Certification Most Outstanding Mental Health Programming Most Outstanding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Programming William E. Kirwan Award for Most Improved Inter-Fraternity Council Chapter Most Outstanding Chapter (The President’s Cup) Prior to the announcement of the nominees for, and winners of, the Greek Awards, the chapters put in work across the board to earn these acknowledgments. The executive board, chair positions, and general members all contributed to the greatness for which the chapter sought recognition. This work throughout the semester then culminated in a presentation given by President Parker Homann and Vice-President Nate Frenkel to a panel of judges, consisting of DSFL staff, local campus initiative directors, Inter-Fraternity Council representatives, and students of the university. The presentation by President Homann and Vice President Frenkel highlighted the chapter's programming, philanthropic and community service endeavors, and the bright future of the new member class. Additionally, Parker and Nate were interviewed for the DEI and Mental Health programming awards by experts in the respective fields. They were able to spotlight the great impact that the chapter's revitalized programming had on the brothers of the Eta Chapter. As a result of the efforts of the Eta Chapter, we received the award for Most Outstanding Mental Health Programming, a Green Chapter Certification and the William E. Kirwan Award for Most Improved Inter-Fraternity Council Chapter! Your Membership in the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa Brothers TO RENEW of the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa We need you now. Help us to continue to be the #1 Phi Sig Alumni Association in the usa.

It’s a Numbers Thing... Each July, we open our membership recruitment and renewal campaign. By our calculation, 132 Brothers of the Eta Chapter have passed away since our alumni association was revitalized 13 years ago. In just the time since the last edition of The THIRD DEGREE was printed and mailed, we have lost 11 members. Saying goodbye to these Brothers has been very difficult. And, with an eye on maintaining our position as the largest alumni group of Phi Sigs in the nation, replacing these lost members is a daunting task. Last year (“Year 12” of our association), 77 Brothers did not renew their membership from “Year 11”. It is also worth noting that, since 2010 (when we revitalized our alumni association): 540 Brothers have held membership in our association at one time or another 390 Brothers have maintained their membership for 9 or fewer years 279 Brothers have maintained their membership for 4 or fewer years 99 Brothers have maintained their membership in each of our 12 years 280 Brothers have graduated/become alumni (the Eta Classes of 2010 - 2023) 286 of the Brothers for whom we have an e-mail address (and who thus may be reading these words) have never joined our alumni association Our alumni association was revitalized in 2010 in order to be of assistance to the effort to re-charter the Eta Chapter. Since then, we have done a lot of stuff. Here are just a few of the highlights: Published 16 issues of an award-winning fullcolor magazine averaging 48 pages in length Hosted an annual Alumni Homecoming Tailgate event (except during COVID) Hosted several very successful Open House and Alumni Reunion events Established and maintained our own Website, Facebook page, Twitter feed and LinkedIn group Been awarded “Alumni Association of the Year” by the Grand Chapter 8 years in a row Raised $139,126.00 for our capital improvement fund - the largest capital improvement fund in the Greek System at UMD Raised $130,555.00 for our Scholarship Fund (now an “Endowed” scholarship fund) - the largest scholarship fund in the Greek System at UMD Of the 250 alumni who make up the Classes of 2010 through 2022 (since the re-chartering of the Eta Chapter): Only 36 Brothers were members last year 164 have never joined our alumni association It is with these Brothers in mind, both the dearly departed and the recently graduated, as well as those from all the decades, that we invite ALL the Brothers of the Eta Chapter to step forward and, like the Cavalry of old, charge in the direction of joining our association or renewing their membership - where help is needed the most and only YOU can make a difference. Damn Proud. Eta Alumni Association News July 2023 The THIRD DEGREE 17

July 2023 The THIRD DEGREE 21 ...and About that Annual Tailgate! Each Fall, the brave and the hearty (and the amply vaccinated) come out into the light of day, accompanied in many cases by family members aplenty, to revitalize our tradition of holding a blowout alumni tailgate at Homecoming - FREE for members and their families! Deftly arranged, each and every time, by the ultimate Social Chairman and Second Vice President of your alumni association, John J. B. Wright, Esq., ‘82, our event has, in recent years, featured a huge tent, custommade and scrumptious catered foods and, of course, a wide selection of appropriate beverages. Befitting our position as the largest alumni association in the Greek System at UMD, we’ve also had a front-row seat at the “College Game Day” experience, visits from Testudo and Athletic Director Damon Evans, and a few UMD Cheerleaders have stopped by to thank us all for our unwavering support for the Maryland Terrapins. But, enough from us - let’s hear what the attendees had to say: The tailgate was fantastic. Great job by John Wright and the whole alumni association gang as always. Thanks for a great day! Thanks, David M. Schwartz ‘91 Joe, Thanks for another great alumni event! Thanks to you, John, all the Actives, and the event committee! Great PSK turnout! Great food - always love the omelets! Great game - always nice to win a close one! Harry T. Murphy ’70 My former room mate (Phil Cole), I and our wives attended the Phi Sig Tailgate. What great hospitality. Plenty to eat and drink, and an opportunity to reconnect with other brothers. As one of my coaches used to say " yoh dun good" A special thanks to John Wright and his wife for getting us tickets. Damn Proud, Lance W. Billingsley ’61 I give the Eta Tailgate 5 stars! Alumni from many decades attended. Great omelets and "accompaniments." Cecil Given '68 From what I gathered, a great event. The mid-1960's crew was well represented. I rarely go more than 10 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and, of course, until they rename Byrd Stadium Byrd Stadium and play all choruses of Maryland My Maryland and allow me to carry my handgun (which I am licensed to do in 40 states) I must remain in Delaware. BTW, the game was not televised on Verizon cable -- in OC or Catonsville and Ellicott City. It was televised on Comcast. Thanks for all you do. You are the mainstay of the Alumni Association. Dennis W. Sirman ‘67 Thanks to Joe Criscuoli, John Wright and, on behalf of the guys of the 60’s, to Cecil Given for putting this together. Even the weather cooperated when the clouds and the Hoosiers tried to put a damper on the day. A great location for the Tailgate, especially with the Big Ten Network having its Saturday show there. Even though the ranks of the guys from the 60’s are thinning because of Father Time, it was great to be able to see those who were able to make it, and some of those who were not there were there in spirit e.g. Wags. The omelets were terrific, there was even Corona for me, the football team put up 38 points and squeaked out a win against the Hoosiers, and after the game some of us retreated to the bar at the Marriott Conference Center. I even found time, before the Tailgate, to re-trace my steps from my Freshman dorm and the surrounding environs, ride around Fraternity Row, College Ave., etc. A trip down Memory Lane. Thanks again for all you do. Ronald G. Rayne, Esq. ‘64

July 2023 The THIRD DEGREE 27 On Just ONE Day Each Year... By now, you may have heard about Giving Day at the University of Maryland. On Giving Day one can go to the Giving Day website and make a gift to any of the funds that the University has designated for receipt of gifts on that day. Most, if not all, of the funds being promoted on Giving Day are scholarship funds. And, of course, you probably know that the Eta Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa has a Scholarship Fund. It is a tax-deductible* charitable fund named the Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund - oh, wait a minute, we changed the name. Now it is called the Phi Sigma Kappa Endowed Scholarship Fund. Giving Day is the single largest day of giving at the University of Maryland. Alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents and friends of the Eta Chapter come together for one purpose: to follow-up on the previous Giving Days when we raised, well, just a few dollars. Actually, to-date we have raised $130,555.00 in just seven total days of fundraising! This tremendous level of generosity has brought our scholarship fund to “Endowment” status. Endowment status is achieved when a fund reaches $50,000.00 or more in donations and can thus award scholarships each year without an appreciable reduction in the fund balance. This means that scholarships will be available to Phi Sigma Kappa undergraduates this year, next year...in perpetuity…forever. At the Eta Alumni Association, we are not simply “all about the money” and we have limited all active fundraising for our scholarship fund to “Giving Day Only.” At the end of formal fundraising associated with Giving Day 2021, the Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund jumped to #1 on the list of most highly funded Greek scholarship accounts. And there we remain...and rightly so. Want to help us stay at #1? Just as important, can we count on you to help us to reach our next goal of $200,000.00 in just eight total days of fundraising? Whether your gift is $10.00 or $10,000.00, your support for The Phi Sigma Kappa Scholarship Fund on the next Giving Day, March 6, 2024, will help our undergraduates with new member recruiting and bring the fearless ideas of our students to life. For Giving Day 2024, we’re planning to reach out to a number of Eta Alumni and ask them to issue a series of “Challenges” and “Matches”. During the next couple of months think about sponsoring one of these : 1) Dollar Challenge - a Dollar Challenge is fulfilled and a donation is created when a certain amount is raised. 2) Donor Challenge - a Donor Challenge is fulfilled and a donation is created when a certain number of unique donors have made a donation. 3) Donation Challenge - a Donation Challenge is fulfilled and a donation is created when a certain number of qualifying donations have been made. Please plan to join this global event and transform the lives of our undergraduate members! The Eta Alumni Association is responsible for notifications sent to our International Headquarters concerning Brothers who have entered the Chapter Eternal. 32 July 2023 The THIRD DEGREE The THIRD DEGREE could be published two times a year by the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa if, and only if, the financial support is there to allow it. Barring the emergence of the support necessary, future editions may be limited to Sustaining Members only, the publication may be reduced to an all black and white document, or the publication may be available only as a digital document available for downloading from the internet. Subscription rates for the USA: a minimum of $40.00 per year, of which only $35.00 is retained by your Alumni Association. Larger donations are eagerly sought. Subscription requests and donations, along with an Alumni Data Sheet, should be sent to: Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa, 12806 Silverbirch Lane, Laurel, MD 20708 This publication was designed entirely by the Editor-in-Chief without any financial cost to the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa, beyond those associated with printing and mailing, and was produced exclusively on a HewlettPackard Personal Computer running the Microsoft Windows System 10 operating software, using Microsoft Publisher software for design and layout resulting in a 34MB file that was converted to a 18MB Adobe Acrobat print-ready file. Manuscripts and photographs are submitted at the sender’s risk. Enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope for return of materials. Submission of material implies a right to edit and publish all or in part. © 2023 Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa All Rights Reserved. Your subscription information is protected by our privacy policies. Unless otherwise indicated, the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa does not endorse any individual or company, nor any service, product or event not offered or sponsored by the Eta Alumni Association of Phi Sigma Kappa. By these things we stand. Signing Off C ongrats! We’ve both made it through to the end of the first issue of our Alumni Newsletter. I dunno, I feel pretty good about it, how about you? Now, having come to this point in the publication, you’re probably wondering, “OK, so what’s next?” And you deserve an honest answer. The answer is: ‘It’s completely up to you.” What’s on my wish list? Well, I’d like to see a large alumni turnout at each of our upcoming events. I’d like to see everyone who reads this column or who received our first “Letter to the Alumni” to complete an Alumni Data Sheet and become a Sustaining Member. I’d like the “Lost Brothers” to be found. And I’d like to watch Maryland Football from a Private Suite in Tyser Tower at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. I have simple needs. And I’m flexible. So, I’m willing to give up on the Suite in Tyser Tower. Your Executive Committee is already hard at work interfacing with the Colony and the Advisory Board, developing events to benefit alumni, undergraduates and our Rush programs, and putting funds in the bank to enable us to sponsor a memorable Charter Night event and assist with the purchase of a new home for Eta. I hope I can count on your support in building the financial resources of your Alumni Association. I hope that you have enjoyed this publication, and that you will want to join your Brothers in support of our efforts. We have far to go - a good deal farther than we’ve gone to-date. And we need to keep moving. Joseph E. Criscuoli, ‘82, Editor From page 36 of our very first issue - “Fall 2010”
