SOUTHERN
COLONIES

GEORGIA

• Georgia was settled by THIS IS GEORGIA LAND

James Edward Oglethorpe.
Georgia was named after
king George the 2nd. It
started as a colony for poor
people so they could stay out
of prison in England.

NORTH CAROLINA

• North Carolina use to be just

Carolina but they got separated by
the government. North Carolina was
a good place to raise cash crops.
Cash crops are tobacco, rice, and
indigo.

SOUTH CARO. LINA

• South Carolina was just named

Carolina but when the south people
came down they named it South
Carolina. They sold cash crops. Cash
crops are crops that can be sold to
make money. Sometimes they also
made turpentine, olive oil, and silk.
Some people knew South Carolina
had religious tolerance.

MARYLAND

Do you like farms? Then
Maryland is the place for you!
A good thing is you can go
swimming because it is hot. A
cool fact is a king’s son lived
here. his name was Cecil.

• Grew Tobacco.
• They had the most slaves.
• Had the oldest college in America.
• Kids in Virginia played marbles.
• Had forests.

*Picking Cotton
*Selling Tobacco

SCHOOLS
IN THE SOUTHERN
COLONIES

IF YOU THINK THE SCHOOLS WERE LIKE YOUR
SCHOOL YOU ARE WRONG. IN FACT THEY DID
NOT HAVE THAT MANY SCHOOLS. IN FACT MOST
CHILDREN WERE TUTORED AT HOME. THEY
LEARNED HOW TO READ, WRITE AND HOW TO
MAKE MUSIC. THE BOYS LEARNED HOW TO HUNT
AND RIDE HORSES. THE GIRLS LEARNED HOW TO
SEW AND SING. WEALTHY PARENTS CHILDREN
WENT TO A GOOD SCHOOL. OTHER CHILDREN DID
NOT.

SOUTHERN COLONIES
CLIMATE AND LAND

The southern colonies land
has good soil. If you like
warm weather than you
should go to the Southern
colonies. The farming was
good. The good soil helped
them grow crash crops.

lands. They also had indigo, rice,
sugar cane.

beans, rice, squash, tobacco, and
indigo. Corn, beans, and squash are
called the three sisters. Corn is also
called maize.

people that were slaves. Indentured
servants worked for a little bit of
money.
