About the Passages
One passage is written on three levels.
Passages are marked H, M, or L (high, medium, low) at the bottom right of the page.
Passages are written with large font for annotating text in centers or
guided reading as well as half page format for use in interactive
science notebooks.
Changing States of Matter Answers
1. A gain or loss of heat energy is needed to change states.
2. Water boils at 212ºF (0ºC).
3. The tiny particles of liquids spread out and become more active as they gain heat energy.
4. Melting and evaporation occur when matter gains heat energy.
5. Evaporation is the process of liquid water changing to a gas (water vapor).
6. Melting is the process of solid water (ice) changing to a liquid.
7. Condensing and freezing occur when matter loses heat energy.
8. When liquid water loses energy, it becomes solid water (ice).
