SEYYAH
The quest for identity in our lives especially in current times forms the basis for Urvashi Kaur’s latest collection Seyyah.
The Turkish word for ‘wanderer’, Seyyah leads Urvashi to draw from distant memories and experi-ences crafting a deeply
personal narrative. Working with an earthy, rustic palette the designer uses dusty shades of fawn that move to a faint
blush, tempered with darker indigoes and olives. Urvashi uses time worn, handwoven textiles like khadi, simple cottons
and traditional Ajrakhs while kota doriya coupled with the pale lustre of cotton silks reflect the transience of cultures and
civilizations.
A range of artisanal indigenous treatments add dimension and depth to these beautiful handlooms. Shibori and distinct
leheriya dyeing imbue a respect of the past to the collection and hand block printing with instances of painstaking, delicate
chikan kari are reflective of the human love for detail and ornamentation. This collection embodies classic, signature
Urvashi Kaur elements of hand tucking and ruching that add a tactile aspect to the pieces while the carefully hand done
micro pleating lends linear symmetricity to certain key silhouettes.
Versatility is key to each collection that the label puts forward and in this case too we see, multi-piece ensembles
embodying the designer’s inherent love of trans-seasonal clothing that can be worn in various ways. Tailored shirts, skirts
and structured jumpsuits meet fluid outerwear and panelled separates. Layering plays a key role in this collection and
several pieces like shirt dresses, tunics and shalwars get paired together in an eclectic, mismatched yet cohesive way,
denoting the seekers journey through existence and lifetimes.
Taking forward the labels fundamental aspects and philosophy, an insertion of multiple menswear looks in this collection
reaches out to a wider, contemporary audience.
Bound by our collective experiences and learnings, we move forward constantly in search of our own truth and bridging
these journeys and stories is the spirit behind this textile rich collection that is ode to our past.
