COMMISSIONER’S CORNER

For cleaner water, keep your mind in the gutter

BY ANDY SOLIS, ESQ., COMMISSIONER
Collier County District 2

W ater quality has always been a priority for Collier
County, but in the last few years, we’ve increased
our focus on how we can work to protect our local

waters and wildlife. Many aspects of that work

happen far away, in Tallahassee and Washington, DC, on the policy

front, and in labs and research facilities near and far on science. It is

heartening to see an intensification of these large-scale efforts.

But you and I, as individuals, can also have a real impact on

water quality by preventing personal pollution in our backyards and

neighborhoods—we just must keep our minds in the gutter!

Many of us think of the stormwater system—the gutters—only

in terms of flood control. And some of us are from a Northern state

that might have their stormwater system connected to their sanitary

sewer system. But here in Florida, pollution and stormwater are

married.

Everything that goes into our stormwater system will eventually

reach our local shores through the series of swales, gutters, pipes,

ponds, and canals that make up Collier County’s stormwater system.

Your back yard, your driveway, the streets we all drive on—they are

all directly connected to our rivers and streams and beaches.

So how can you and I and our families be a part of cleaner

water?

HERE’S ONE BIG WAY:
LET’S TALK ABOUT POO-LUTION.

• Did you know that pet waste, or poo-lution, is recognized as
the third-highest source of bacterial pollution in our nation’s
waterways?

• According to national surveys, 40% of dog owners don’t pick
up after their dogs. With nearly 21,000 registered dogs in
Collier County, it’s estimated there are an astounding two
tons of dog poop being left on the ground in Collier County
every day.

• Contrary to what some people believe, dog poop is NOT
fertilizer! Instead, it is particularly nasty stuff, with very high
amounts of bacteria per gram – twice as much as human
waste, and ten times more than cow manure. However, like
fertilizer, it is very high in phosphorus and nitrogen, things
we know cause algal blooms and endanger aquatic wildlife.

• You need to pick it up, even if it’s in your own yard. It still

NAPLES SENIOR CENTER

HOSTS TOPPING OFF CELEBRATION FOR NEW PERMANENT HOME:

Completion anticipated by end of 2022

rustees and other senior leadership
from the Naples Senior Center got
a sneak preview of the nonprofit’s
new permanent home at a Topping
Off Celebration at its future site. The
invitation-only event celebrated the general
finishing of the structure of the building
and marked yet another milestone in the
growth of Naples Senior Center.
Construction began on the
30,000-square-foot building in November
of 2021 and is currently on schedule
for completion by the end of this year.
The building is located on 13.7 acres on
Autumn Oaks Lane, just a block south of
Immokalee Road in North Naples.

12 | North Naples News Naples Senior Center is the only human services
agency of its kind, providing “one-stop-shop” services
addressing the emotional and social needs of seniors in
Collier and southern Lee counties. Since opening its
doors in 2014, the organization has seen its membership
surge from just eighty members initially to more than
1,400 members today.

“In just seven years, we have seen a surge in the depth
and scope of need for comprehensive senior services in
this region and we have quickly outgrown our current
leased facilities,” said Dr. Jaclynn Faffer, President/CEO of
Naples Senior Center. “This new building will give us the
additional resources needed to provide our growing elderly
population with the tools to address life’s challenges, like
isolation and loneliness.”

During the ceremony, attendees enjoyed a guided tour
of the first floor of the new building which will house
a series of meeting rooms with large floor-to-ceiling
windows, an art room, a library, a main reception area, and
some offices. Additional administrative offices and meeting
space will occupy the second floor. Also located on the
first floor will be a prominent donor wall, behind which
attendees were able to sign their names.

SEED TO TABLE?

BY ANDREA GIORDANO

WNaples Resident
hat one local shares with
another can be sage
advice. When not jet-
setting around the world,
we still want the wonderful delicacies that
remind us of the places we are so fond
of when we travel. Living in Naples, our
family feels so blessed to be able to visit Seed
to Table (STT) which offers so many products
from all over the nation and around the world.

There are over 250 different cheeses in their cheese
department. A wine and cheese enthusiast could spend hours
perusing the cheeses and pairing them with fine wines. Or just watch
as the homemade mozzarella is made on the spot!

For those in love with France, the heirloom flour used to make the
fresh bread, in-store baked chocolate-filled croissants, and the French
press coffee or latte are sure to please. One could have any customer
feel like they are walking along the Champs-Elysées in Paris!

As a lover of Italy, I can say, look no further than the fresh pasta
department where every shape of pasta is made in-house daily, along
with almost every type of sauce found in Europe. There is fresh basil,
grated parmesan cheese, and Italian bread, every item one needs to
create an Italian masterpiece. Even mouthwatering appetizers are
available and freshly baked biscotti in so many flavors. One could
close their eyes and feast on foods that are being served all day along
the Amalfi Coast without ever leaving Naples, Florida. Whether
one is searching for the best capers, anchovies, olives, tomatoes, or
even garlic, there is no better organic market to get all the freshest
ingredients and produce than Seed to Table, or Oakes Farms.

When one is not able to fly out west to get the best beef in
America, there is no worry there. Brave Heart grass-fed meats are
sold at Seed to Table and enjoy every cut possible to eat on the
premises or take home to prepare.

If you have not been to Seed to Table in a while, it is worth
checking out, especially after the snowbirds have departed. You
will find live music daily, excellent weekend brunch options, a
healthy smoothie bar, grocery favorites including grass-fed milk,
unpasteurized orange juice, and an unlimited variety of beers, mixers,
and dessert drinks.

But the best reason to stop in before boating or beaching or just
going to fill your fridge is no matter when you visit Seed to Table you
will leave happier from the experience of visiting. And like the sign
says. “There are no strangers here only friends we have yet to meet.”

Summer would use theatre to act out
feelings they’re having and try out real-life
scenarios in a safe setting.

After researching TNP’s website,
Summer decided we had an inspiring
program that she wanted to be a part of.
“I made myself a job here—they weren’t
hiring. What I want to do is very niche and
it’s something that really doesn’t exist in
this country. After grad school, I wanted
to be closer to home in Florida. I noticed
all of the community partners listed on
TNP’s website and got in touch with Craig

Of course, Craig and the staff at TNP
took notice of Summer’s experience and
brought her on in March of this year.

creativity and joy.”

In general, Summer over-prepares and comes up with
different activities that will work for different accessibility
levels. “There may be people who have no mobility or
movement as well as people who are nonverbal but are able
to listen. It’s important to come up with activities that engage
everyone at the same time and there are different creative ways
to accomplish that. If I bring a script in and find that some
people can read, some people can talk, while some can listen
and showcase it physically but not verbally, I know that there’s
a part for everyone in the room. For example, someone can
read the lines and their partner can act it out for them.”

Summer’s background in performance started at age three
when she started dance lessons and in high school, she landed
the role of lead dancer in The Wedding Singer. “I fell in love
with theatre and decided that’s what I wanted to do for the
rest of my life. My undergraduate degree is in acting and I
received a certificate in arts and medicine. When I was there, I
realized that theatre is where I made my friends and my support
system—it helped me express myself. And through the arts and
medicine program, I realized that there is more to theatre than
being on stage—it can be used to strengthen our community
and ourselves.”

Outside of subbing in for Improv for ASD classes at The
Naples Players, Summer just finished a month-long program
of Expressive Theatre Therapy with Horses for the Naples
Women’s Shelter at The Naples Therapeutic Riding Center.
Summer says, “In all of this, we’re going into these community
organizations to teach but I 100% learn as much from the
participants as they do from us. I am equal with my students
and am learning from them all the time. You’ve never met
such creative improvers as you would from a care facility—I’m
learning how to be a better actor and get a fresh perspective as
well. It is by far the most rewarding job I’ve ever had!”

All of us at TNP cannot wait to watch the wellness
program grow! Welcome Summer and we’re excited to see
what you and Craig accomplish next. To find out more, visit
