54 | Old Naples News February 2026CAN ADVERTISING SAVE AMERICA?For more than a century, the U.S. has drawn a clear line between free speech and commercial speech. Content created to monitor behavior, target interests, or provoke emotional reactions for advertising profit has always been treated as commercial speech—and therefore subject to legal standards of accuracy, truthfulness, and consumer protection. These guardrails allowed America’s prior media to flourish while shielding the public from manipulation and fraud.THE INTERNET IS THE EXCEPTION — BY ACCIDENTToday’s internet operates under a radically different regime. Advertisingdriven online content is largely exempt from legal responsibility. It isn’t required to ensure accuracy, safety, or even human authorship. This includes material generated by bots, foreign governments, and criminal networks. This extraordinary carve-out originates from America’s antiquated communication policy, which includes a Section 230 exemption shielding internet platforms from liability for distributing email and social media content. When the policy was created in 1995–96, lawmakers assumed the internet would function like a subscription utility, not an advertising-supported media ecosystem. They granted online platforms sweeping immunity from rules applied to every other ad-funded media. But instead of subscriptions, internet technologies rapidly grew through data mining and advertising.AMERICA HAS ALWAYS RECOGNIZED LIMITSThe U.S. has long accepted that certain speech carries consequences; one cannot legally yell “fire” in a crowded theater without cause. Likewise, advertisingsupported media have historically been accountable for the content it distributes—with protections meant to prevent fraud, manipulation, and foreign interference.Yet policymakers in the mid-1990s, eager to lead the emerging World Wide Web, avoided regulations they feared might slow innovation. Now, 30 years later, this policy leaves the internet threatening children’s safety, public health, and national security—a concern echoed in current debates over artificial intelligence.THE LESSON OF THE FAIRNESS DOCTRINEFrom 1949 to 1987, the Fairness Doctrine required broadcasters to air opposing views on issues of public importance. Enacted when three networks held immense influence— amid Cold War fears of propaganda—it helped establish a trusted news environment. Walter Cronkite became “the most trusted man in America” under the requirement to present both sides.Repeal of the doctrine, justified by claims that cable expanded viewpoint diversity, opened the door to today’s highly partisan media landscape; for example, from MSNBC on the left to Fox News on the right to highly partisan independent commentators.WHY THE NEW POLICY IS URGENTAmerica needs internet communication reform that restores accountability, as long applied to earlier media. Maintaining our antiquated policy puts children, public health, and democratic institutions at risk. AI now makes it feasible for platforms to detect harmful content and gives consumers potential avenues for recourse. The Technopoly of the “Magnificent Seven” tech companies, now holds unprecedented economic and informational power. Section 230 absolves platforms from the obligation to monitor foreign disinformation or prevent inflated botdriven ad metrics, leaving the ecosystem dangerously exposed. They have pervasive influence and control over communication, our economy, and government representatives. With such power must come responsibility. Advertisers—large and small—must demand safe, trustworthy media environments or risk legal exposure and the stability of American selfgovernment itself.Tim Love is a former Vice-Chairman of Omnicom Group, the leading marketing services and advertising holding company. 58 | Old Naples News February 2026THE NAPLES PLAYERS PRESENT THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIMEThe Naples Players (TNP) continue their 72nd Season with the internationally acclaimed play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Simon Stephens, running February 4 – March 1, in The Price Studio Theater. Directed by Executive Artistic Director Bryce Alexander, this powerful and imaginative adaptation of Mark Haddon’s bestselling novel invites audiences into an unforgettable theatrical journey filled with heart, humor, and discovery. A highlight of Season 72, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time tells the story of Christopher Boone, a brilliant teenager whose extraordinary mind helps him navigate a mystery that expands into something far more personal. This production features a unique creative approach: two actors, Thomas Currie and Matthew Hasley, share the role of Christopher Boone. One lives the story as it unfolds; the other recalls and narrates it. Together, they form two halves of a single mind in motion. Their performances echo, collide, and complete each other, revealing that truth is never just one voice. It is a journey from certainty to understanding — showing that comprehension, not fact, is what ultimately connects us.“This production is a beautiful reminder of why theatre matters. It helps us see from new perspectives and reminds us that every person’s inner world is worthy of understanding,” said Director Bryce Alexander. “By sharing Christopher’s mind between two performers, we’re inviting audiences to experience both the brilliance and the vulnerability of his story in a way that is deeply human and deeply theatrical.”CASTThe production features a talented ensemble of local artists:Pamela Austin, Oscar Clark, Thomas Currie, Edison Filner, Lisa Gunn, Jen Hart, Matthew Hasley, Ruth Johnson, Ruth Kennedy, Joch Luzarraga, Linda Mizeur, Tom Rex, Kelly Rossberg, Roseann Ruggiero, and Susan Vobejda.VENUE & SPONSORThe Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is sponsored locally by Naples Airport Authority. 62 | Old Naples News February 2026What, one may ask, could possibly have inspired the deeply intellectual Salvador Dalí to produce melting clocks in his famous painting, The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory. Well, here it is: the inspiration was a puddle of sun-melted, oozing Camembert cheese. In his dream-obsessed mind, it represented the fluidity of time and subconscious desires. Digging deeper, observe his Still Life-Fast Moving, wherein platters, a razor-sharp knife and a halfspilled water bottle levitate over the table. It clearly depicts a blending of quantum physics with Catholic mysticism and atomic theory. Food, a frequent subject, symbolized intense feelings like vulnerability, decay and death. Lobster, a special favorite, depicted sexual desire and pleasure. Sometimes, though, it's pleasant to simply take his work at face value, such A surreal dreamscape from St. Petersburg, Florida to Figueres, Spain KAREN T. BARTLETTTravel Editor Dali Surreal Dreamscapeas Portrait of Gala With Two Lamb Chops Balanced on Her Shoulder. In 1938, for reasons unknown to most, the artist created his now-famous Lobster Telephone (a regular phone with a real lobster for a handset) to exhibit at the International Exhibition of Surrealism. It was quite a sensation until, after a couple of weeks, the creature got quite stinky. Still, it inspired a rich patron to order twelve of them for his home — this time with plaster lobsters.Dalí later cleared up the mystery of why he even made a lobster phone in the first place with a completely logical explanation:DALÍ“I do not understand why, when I ask for a grilled lobster in a restaurant, I am never served a cooked telephone. I do not understand why champagne is always chilled, and why, on the other hand, telephones, which are habitually so frightfully warm and disagreeably sticky to the touch, are not also put in silver buckets with crushed ice around them.”\"Endless Garden\" interactive exhibit. February 2026 Old Naples News | 63The original lobster phones, in red and white versions, reside in prestigious museums and private collections worldwide. But at Florida's Salvador Dalí Museum, which houses the largest collection of Dalí's art outside of Spain, we can pick up the handset of a replica of that phone and ask questions of the artist himself, which will be answered in his heavily accented English. The Dalí Museum is a spectacular work of architectural art overlooking the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront. Its free-form geodesic glass bubble, The Enigma, made of 1,062 triangular pieces of glass, pays homage to the dome that adorns world renowned Dalí Theatre Museum in Spain. A helical staircase, reflecting Dalí’s obsession with spirals and the double helical shape of the DNA molecule, rises from the main floor cafe and gift shop to the galleries above, showcasing more than 2,000 paintings, drawings and sculptures. One can spend a pleasant 90 minutes (more if you linger for lunch or brunch at the deliciously Spanish-themed Café Gala) or let the hours melt away like a puddle of Camembert cheese, immersing in the vivid dreamworld of the brilliant and troubled soul of the artist.DALÍ ALIVE 360° The sculpture-filled Avant Garden connects the main museum to the Dalí Dome. Opened in 2023, the 360-degree globe, co-produced with the company that created Van Gogh Alive a decade before, was custom built to showcase Dalí Alive 360, the multisensory experience into the artist's realm with art, words, light and sound, as one image dissolves or floats into the next. At a small additional price over admission, it's an absolute must-do. Previous showings in the dome have included Van Gogh Alive and Pink Floyd: The Dark Side of the Moon. 64 | Old Naples News February 2026DREAMSCAPES To showcase Dalí's obsession with dreams, the museum employs interactive exhibits. Dream Tapestry \"listens\" to our vision — maybe a recent dream, or a life fantasy, no matter how outrageous — and then projects that dream onto a screen in iconic Dalí style. Each dream dissolves when the next visitor steps up, but throughout the day, elements of all the dreams are stitched together into one collective tapestry. The Endless Garden invites us to help create an ever-evolving digital landscape, where surreal objects from our own responses join some of Dalí’s favorite subjects —eyeballs, lobsters, insect-legged elephants, melting clocks and more —adding to the massive wraparound wall-size visual. In The Dreams of Dalí virtual reality experience, a full-immersion VR headset places us inside Dalí’s1935 painting, Archaeological Reminiscence of Millet’s “Angelus,\" traveling across a surreal desert populated with mystical stone towers and giant predatory insects, reinterpreting Jean-François Millet's gentle portrayal of two peasants praying for their potato harvest as somber, praying mantis-style figures grieving the death of a child.BUCKET LIST: THE DALÍNIAN TRIANGLEDalí’s hometown is Figueres, on northeastern Spain’s Costa Brava (fierce coast) where three Dalí museums lie in close proximity, just 40-minutes by high-speed train from Barcelona. Built on the ruins of a former theater and designed by the artist himself, Dalí-Theatre Museum, Figueres, holds the world’s most extensive collection of his work. Salvador Dalí HouseMuseum, Port Lligat, is the artist's home in the stunning whitewashed coastal town of Cadaqués. When Gala Dalí craved a refuge from decades as her husband's muse and business manager, Dalí acquired and restored a medieval castle for her. Thereafter, he was admitted only upon written invitation.
