6 | Old Naples News April 2026MAYOR TERESA LEE HEITMANNCity of Naples MayorWhen I think about men of vision in our nation’s history, Alexander Hamilton immediately comes to mind. He was born into very difficult circumstances, yet through determination, intellect, and a deep belief in the promise of America, he rose to help shape an entire nation. His story reminds me that humble beginnings never have to limit what we can accomplish.Hamilton believed in building strong systems that would allow a young country to truly thrive. He understood that lasting success required structure, fiscal responsibility, and bold thinking. He was willing to take risks for the sake of stability and growth. His leadership required patience, a willingness to “wait for it,” trusting that steady work and sound principles would shape the future. And honestly, how often do we look for the quick fix or the easy answer instead of embracing the patience and perseverance required to build something meaningful, whether in our own lives or for the greater good? The musical also reminds us that leadership is rarely glamorous. It requires endurance, humility, and the strength to carry responsibility long after the applause fades. Hamilton was far from perfect. He made mistakes. He faced criticism and opposition. Yet he kept building, writing, and serving. That steady commitment to his principles is what made the difference.I recently had the privilege of watching Hamilton with my daughter, and it was such a special experience. Sitting beside her and watching history come alive on stage was incredibly moving. When we heard the line, “Look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now,” I felt that gratitude deeply. Sharing that moment across generations reminded me why these stories matter. The show also speaks honestly about how hard leadership can be. One line says it so clearly: “Dying is easy, young man, living is harder.” That truth resonates. Living out your convictions day after day takes courage.Men of vision are not perfect. They are courageous. They are disciplined. They think beyond themselves. Hamilton’s story continues to inspire me to lead with purpose, to value long-term stability, and to remain steady in both conviction and perseverance. And sharing that story with my daughter is something I will always treasure.MEN OF VISIONINSPIRED BY HAMILTONPhotography by George Wirt

April 2026 Old Naples News | 9Jamie L. Ulmer’s career has been defined by service, leadership, and a commitment to building healthcare systems that work for the communities they serve. His leadership draws from experience across healthcare delivery, public health, and military service. Ulmer now serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Healthcare Network in Collier County.Today, Ulmer leads a $100+ million healthcare system with more than 500 employees, serving one of the fastest-growing regions in Florida. Under his leadership, Healthcare Network has expanded access in communities long considered medical deserts, while strengthening accountability and ensuring long-term sustainability. In just three years, Ulmer secured more than $20 million in state appropriations and philanthropy to build a new comprehensive health center in eastern Golden Gate Estates, a community with no primary care providers, which is expected to serve 40,000 patients annually. He has also launched Family Medicine and Pediatric Dental residency programs to address workforce shortages and expanded services, including OB telehealth for high-risk pregnancies, infusion therapy, addiction treatment, pediatric dental IV sedation, and Southwest Florida’s first school-based health clinic. Before joining Healthcare Network, Ulmer led community health systems and held senior public health roles at the state level and through his service with the U.S. Army. He is a retired U.S. Army Medical Service Corps officer with multiple combat deployments culminating in the award of the Bronze Star, an experience that continues to influence his disciplined, mission-driven approach to healthcare leadership.Beyond operations, Ulmer helps shape healthcare policy at the state and national levels through board service with the National Association of Community Health Centers and the Florida Association of Community Health Centers. For Jamie Ulmer, leadership means cutting through red tape, expanding access, and ensuring healthcare systems remain focused on patients. 14 | Old Naples News April 2026Men of VisionDavid HoffmannFew leaders shape communities as profoundly as they shape companies. David Hoffmann has spent his career doing both. As founder and chairman of Hoffmann Family of Companies, he oversees one of the world’s largest family owned enterprises—an organization of more than 26,000 employees and over 200 brands and properties spanning 30 countries. David’s leadership journey began in 1989 with the creation of DHR Global, which he built into one of the largest privately held executive search firms in the world. That success became the foundation for the Hoffmann Family of Companies, which today encompasses private equity and real estate divisions now led by his sons, Geoff and Greg. His accomplishments have earned national recognition, including five consecutive years on the Forbes Billionaires List and the prestigious Horatio Alger Award, which honors leaders who overcome adversity to achieve the American dream. He also holds an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of Central Missouri, his alma mater, where he returned as the 2022 commencement speaker. Yet David’s most profound impact extends beyond business. In Southwest Florida, he and his wife, Jerri, have become driving forces for community revitalization and philanthropy. Their support has strengthened some of Naples’ most cherished institutions, including the Naples Botanical Garden, Naples Zoo, Naples Children & Education Foundation, and The Naples Players at the Sugden Community Theatre. Through generous giving and hands-on involvement, they have expanded healthcare access, enhanced cultural amenities, and created new opportunities for children, families, and local businesses. David was recently honored with the National Football Foundation’s Community Service Award, recognizing his transformative influence on Collier County and his deep commitment to service. He and Jerri were also inducted into the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame of Southwest Florida. David Hoffmann’s legacy will be defined not only by the scale of his business empire, but also by his family, his commitment to local journalism, his philanthropic impact, and his unwavering belief in building stronger, more resilient communities.DAVID [email protected] by Akilah TownsendSuccess brings opportunity, and the greatest opportunity of all is to reinvest in the communities that “shaped our journey.”–David Hoffmann

16 | Old Naples News April 2026INSIDE THE HEART AND MIND OF JESSE HOUSMANAn intimate conversation with the chef whose restaurant sparked the dining renaissance of Fifth Avenue South

April 2026 Old Naples News | 17It was Valentine's Day, 1994. Jesse Housman, age 32, was serving the first dinner in his career as a chef. He could never have imagined that one day he'd own that restaurant. Or that 32 years later, Bistro 821 would remain the longest running restaurant on Fifth Avenue South. FINDING MY PASSION\"My father, a scientist, had hoped that I'd follow in his distinguished footsteps. But I was working several jobs, kicking around for a direction, and failing horribly. One day, I was washing dishes in a restaurant on Cape Cod, when a cook didn't show up, and I got pulled into the line. It was one of the most thrilling days of my life. I went home that night with the clearest insight I'd ever had. Finally, I knew what I wanted to do. From then on, I worked in every restaurant capacity, absorbing everything. And then serendipity happened. Famed chefs Julia Child and Jacques Pépin created a culinary arts program at Boston University, and I was chosen for the first class. They both gave demonstrations and we students were their slaves. One day we were invited to Julia's home, and in case you're wondering, everything you've heard about her knife collection is true! Our final exam was brutal. Jacques was one of the judges and he purposely set us up to fail, leaving out critical ingredients. I made hollandaise five different ways. I deboned a turkey, roasted it and put it back together perfectly. But when I made my fruit tarts with half and half instead of pure cream, he knew!\"Did you still pass the exam? \"I was number one!\"CONSISTENCY IS NEXT TO GODLINESS\"Several takeaways from Jacques' class have helped define me as a chef. Once, he took a box of kosher salt and poured a little mound, and beside it, another mound, and then another one. I'm staring in disbelief at KAREN T. BARTLETTthat row of salt piles, all precisely the same. 'A good chef must be able to do this,' he says. 'You must understand and respect the seasoning.'That's a challenge in the corporate restaurant environment, where cost and convenience often get in the way. There's the assumption that partly substituting a lower grade of oil won't make much of a difference. It does. Also, everything must be fresh. To this day, an ingredient not up to the highest standard does not come through my door. Introducing specials keeps me creative; keeps the thrill of cooking. But at Bistro 821, only favorites join the permanent menu. Our now-legendary miso-sake marinated Chilean sea bass took six years to earn its spot and remains a top seller.\"THE PHONE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING\"After completing the culinary program, I got a call from a friend who was the chef at Windstar Country Club in Naples. 'Come to Florida,' he said, 'and be my sous chef.' My wife and I fell instantly in love with this town. But I missed the restaurant kitchen experience, and soon got a job at Michaels Cafe on 41, working alongside another sous chef, Jimmy Ryan. Both Michael and Jimmy were to remain part of my life for over the next 30 years.\"When Michael decided to open a restaurant on Fifth Avenue South, he recruited the best chef he knew, his own sous chef at Michael's, to lead the kitchen. Many say that the selection of Jesse Housman was his most lasting accomplishment.PERSONAL TRAGEDY\"Those early days were exhilarating. I'd spend all day at the construction site, clean up, and rush back to my job at Michael's. After we opened, my wife worked beside me, supporting my dream. I was the best version of me. A few years later I would lose her in a tragic accident. My world was ending. I could have taken our fiveyear-old daughter back to Boston, moved in with her grandmother, and been sad the rest of my life. But our tight knit community saved me. Naples was a small town then, and a tragedy was communitywide. My friends gave a benefit dinner at the Turtle Club, raising enough money to help us through. Years later, I was blessed to find another wonderful woman, Larissa, and life is good.\"Do friends feel nervous having you over for dinner? \"Of course, people are a bit nervous, and that's a shame, because I love home cooking. Joy to me is a small family group, with all the emotion that goes with preparing and enjoying food together.\"WHAT DO YOU COOK AT HOME?\"Larissa and I enjoy walking around the local farms. We also grow mangos, kaffir limes, a key ingredient in my red curry, plus lemon grass, Thai ginger and other kitchen herbs. I like grilling meats. There's never a shortage of interesting choices at Jimmy P's. Otherwise, I don't go rushing home to cook. We eat fresh and simple. Besides, I don't have a crew trailing behind to clean up after me.\" Men of VisionChef Jesse S. Housman239.261.5821bistro821.com821 Fifth Ave SouthNaples, FL 34102OPEN DAILY 4-CLOSEBe a good person. Blake Renda is Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Veedor Holdings LLC, a private investment and holding company behind Veedor I, a multi-strategy hybrid investment fund, and purpose-driven ventures including Dragon Horse Agency, Dragon Horse Publishing, and Moxie Creed, headquartered in Naples, Florida.Known as a “Vision Capitalist,” Blake is driven by a core conviction: “Capital is not just money, it’s a vision turned into momentum, driven to make an impact. The future belongs to those who dare to fund their vision.” That is why, the belief that business should create opportunity, strengthen community, and elevate society has guided every chapter of his career.Blake, a graduate of the University of Southern California, began his career at NBC Studios in Burbank, where he learned how storytelling shapes perception and the power of media and entertainment. With encouragement from his late father, Blake then entered the field of law and finance, moving to Palo Alto in Silicon Valley, an environment that pioneered venture capital and one that values innovation, decisive thinking, and challenging assumptions. This immersion into such a dynamic community led him to his “calling” and a move to the bulge-bracket, institutional buy side on Wall Street, where he joined a small team co-managing multi-billion-dollar technology portfolios with the historic firm of J. & W. Seligman & Co. and American Express Asset Management. Blake distinguished himself and was promptly acknowledged for his insights and accomplishments, being ranked by Institutional Investor Magazine as one of the “Best of the Buy Side.” Blake’s most formative moments are not defined by recognition; they are defined by resilience. As a successful investor, he was soon challenged during “The Great Recession,” which shook the global financial system to its core. He describes that period as humbling and clarifying, and it taught him that setbacks can refine a leader’s purpose if they are willing to learn. That experience ignited his desire for new challenges and led him to join an innovative lifestyle skincare startup as Chief Operating Officer. Over the next five years, the company grew significantly, highlighted by a successful joint venture in Japan. In 2015, it was honored as “Florida Retailer of the Year” by the National Retail Federation. For Blake, the achievement reinforced a core belief: when teams are united by purpose and disciplined execution, exceptional results follow. Today, this company is publicly traded.Driven by his insatiable desire to innovate, invest, and build, Blake then launched Veedor Holdings LLC with Co-CEO Julie Koester, now celebrating its 11th year. A contrarian and calculated risk-taker, Blake champions ambitious ventures that create positive impact, guided by the Ubuntu principle, “I am because we are.” His vision is not simply about seeing what could be; it is about committing to building it, so all can rise with it.Blake’s leadership philosophy is captured in a favorite quote from Sir Winston Churchill: “Success is not final; failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.”P. BLAKE RENDACapital is not just money, it’s a vision turned into momentum, driven to make an impact. 20 | Old Naples News April 2026Early in my career, I met a entrepreneur who was building his business from nothing more than exceptional skill, a pickup truck, and unwavering work ethic. His success accelerated quickly, but his personal financial life hadn’t kept pace. Together, we established the fundamentals, beginning with a clear retirement strategy, a tax efficient framework, and the separation of his business and personal finances. As we worked together over the years and strengthened his portfolio, I watched his mindset shift from chaos to purpose, from fear of losing everything to confidence and pride in securing his family’s future.Experiences like this shaped my trajectory. I realized early that serving at the highest level demands a commitment to excellence that few pursue. Earning my CFP® and CIMA® required substantial investment of time and discipline, and I’ve never questioned the value of that pursuit. It elevated the standard to which I hold myself and the level at which I serve.Explain your holistic approach to financial planning. As I’ve guided clients through increasingly complex decisions, our relationships have evolved far beyond wealth management. We talk about what matters most, what keeps them up at night, and the causes that move them. At Kyros, our hand selected team shares that conviction. We help clients articulate how they want to prepare their children and grandchildren to lead with confidence and steward their wealth responsibly. We stand beside them as they define the legacy they want to leave. How have over two decades of helping your clients grow and manage their wealth affected the way you balance your own life?I’ve seen that wealth without purpose offers little fulfillment. My wife and business partner, Heather Clegg, and our son are the center of my life. Our rescue dog, Dolly, brings a sense of ease and joy to our home. I also find balance in quiet backwater fishing. The stillness, the wildlife, and the rhythm of the tide clear my mind. It’s where I reset, refuel, and stay aligned with the mission of meeting our clients’ highest expectations. My commitment to that mission is as strong today as it was the day we opened our doors.WILLIAM E. 22 | Old Naples News April 2026239.263.7990NaplesPlayers.org701 5th Avenue SouthNaples, FL 34102As CEO and Executive Artistic Director of The Naples Players, Bryce Alexander leads with a clear vision: to help redefine how theatres can impact their communities. Under his leadership, the organization has become one of the most active and ambitious nonprofit theatres in the country, completing a $22 million campus transformation, expanding access to arts education, and building programs that extend well beyond the stage.Today, The Naples Players is not simply a place to attend a performance. It is a cultural hub where students, volunteers, professionals, and audiences come together to create, learn, and belong. Bryce believes theatre should be open, welcoming, and deeply connected to the people it serves. That belief shapes everything from expanded scholarships and inclusive programming to partnerships that use the arts to support healthcare workers, first responders, veterans, and families across the region. At the heart of Bryce’s leadership is a focus on how the work feels from the inside. Volunteers are treated as collaborators. Students are treated as artists. Professional and community voices share the room without hierarchy defining contribution. The result is an environment grounded in trust, creativity, and shared purpose.Beyond Naples, Bryce is focused on how The Naples Players can serve as a model for theatres nationwide. By pairing artistic excellence with deep community engagement, he aims to demonstrate that nonprofit theatres can be both locally rooted and nationally influential, helping shift the perception of what theatres can achieve. As The Naples Players continues to grow its national profile, Bryce remains focused on the long view. 24 | Old Naples News April [email protected] Tamiami Trail N • Ste. 600Naples, FL 34103Chris Christensen, President and CEOGenerational Strategies Group “We are in the process of the largest migration of wealth in history. The baby boom generation is passing on unprecedented assets amassed during the post-WWII economic boom to the new generations: Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z. Now in their mid 60s to 80s, boomers shifting into the fourth quarter of their lives are preparing to pass the torch to their children. The phenomenon, called the Great Wealth Transfer, began when the Greatest Generation emerged from World War II to start businesses and accumulate wealth. As they began aging out, they passed their wealth on to their children, the baby boom generation. Boomers have been extremely successful empire builders, and they require extremely careful planning as they prepare to pass the torch to their own children. This Great Wealth Transfer consists of private businesses, real estate, equities, and cash, and, according to Allianz and other financial intelligence providers, roughly $16 trillion will move within the next ten years, reaching $125 trillion by 2048. “Millennials, Gen X, and Gen Z face a different, more challenging financial landscape than previous generations, requiring new strategies. A great deal depends on how this vast wealth is managed. Since establishing Generational Strategies Group in 1983 and observing signs for the coming wealth migration, I have directed 100% of our focus to helping highnet-worth clients, primarily principals of privately held businesses, to prioritize liquid assets, gifting, and trust structures that keep wealth nimble and ready for generational transfer. “Our goal is to safeguard each client’s financial well-being from generation to generation. To that end, we hold straightforward conversations with adult children and their parents to plan for smooth succession or sale of family businesses, long-term elder care, and medical expenses while planning their own legacies and ensuring that their wishes will be honored. We work side by side with our clients in navigating critical changes in tax laws to mitigate and negate estate taxes by meshing all the key planning strategies, including family foundations and charitable trusts, into a zero estate tax plan. As the Great Wealth Transfer continues to unfold, we remain committed to delivering 100% of their life’s work —not to the government, but to their children, grandchildren, and cherished charities.”PASSING THE TORCHTHE LARGEST MIGRATION OF WEALTH IN HISTORYOur goal is to safeguard each client’s financial well-being from generation to “generation.”–Chris ChristensenMen of VisionChris Christensen

32 | Old Naples News April 2026Mark Danni, founding artistic director of TheatreZone, Naples’ premier professional musical theatre, has built a career defined by artistry, mentorship, and vision. A Buffalo, New York native, he began playing drums at age 10 and was performing with theatre “pit” orchestras as a teenager, setting the foundation for a life in music and storytelling. After earning a Bachelor of Music Education from Baldwin-Wallace University Conservatory of Music — where he was later honored with the Alumni Achievement Award — Danni toured and performed on Broadway productions including Chicago, Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, 42nd Street, Hair, Evita, and The Phantom of the Opera. While conducting the national tour of Les Misérables, he was encouraged to step into directing, a pivotal shift that shaped his future in regional and Off-Broadway theatre. That path ultimately led to Naples, where Danni and his wife, choreographer Karen Molnar Danni, relocated in 2002 to help expand the arts at Community School of Naples. Their shared passion evolved into TheatreZone, founded in 2005 as a nonprofit professional Equity company based at the school and dedicated to producing award-winning and hidden musical theatre gems.Over the past two decades, Danni has taught more than 1,500 college and high school students while guiding TheatreZone into a respected cultural institution known for intimate productions and nationally recognized talent. From early successes such as Mack & Mabel starring Gary Sandy to a steady presence of professional stage veterans and icons, his leadership continues to shape Naples’ artistic landscape — rooted in the belief that musical theatre has the power to inspire, connect, and transform audiences. A sought-after speaker at community and cultural organizations, Danni is known for sharing his passion for theatre with the same warmth, humor, and insight he brings to the stage.13275 Livingston RoadNaples, FL 34109Box Office: 888.966.3352Mark Danni: 239.249.2090Theatre.Zone @theatre.zoneMen of VisionMark DanniMARK DANNILEADING WITH VISION THROUGH MUSICAL THEATREWhen people walk into the theatre, I want them to leave the world outside for a while — to laugh, feel something real, and remember how powerful live performance can be.”“–Mark Danni

36 | Old Naples News April 2026One of the rewarding aspects of being a holistic medical doctor is that you get to learn about the medicinal benefits of various foods and how to use them in your practice. Today I will highlight some of these important functional foods. Take a look at the cantaloupe for example. One cup of cantaloupe provides 110 percent of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of vitamin A in the form of beta carotene. This cleansing antioxidant combines with the melon’s high-water content to help speed the elimination of fat-trapping toxins from the body. So, if I have a patient who is trying to optimize his or her weight and is asking for a nutritious breakfast, I recommend combing a small slice of cantaloupe with either a small cup of plain low-fat organic yogurt, or a small serving of low-fat organic cottage cheese, or just about any other non-processed source of protein you like. As you face Florida’s heat—adding HEALING FOODSa cantaloupe to anything you eat will make you feel brighter, cooler, and more hydrated. Another great fruit to use abundantly in your Naples home is watermelon. Packed with skin-nourishing antioxidants, like vitamins A, C, and lycopene—watermelon can help strengthen the skin’s sun defense network by preventing free radical damage that can cause wrinkles and sunspots. In fact, you probably noticed how so many skincare companies are adding watermelon lately as an ingredient in creams and moisturizers. In the kitchen, combining one small slice of cool watermelon with any healthy source of unprocessed protein like a scoop of avocado or a low-fat organic mozzarella stick, will make a great nutritious snack and keep your complexion hydrated and radiant. A lesser-known fruit chock-full of nutrients is kiwi. Vitamin C and polyphenols in kiwi can reduce levels of triglycerides by up to fifteen percent. A perfect breakfast or a snack for someone trying to mend their metabolic syndrome naturally is to blend one small cup of organic non-fat kefir or plain yogurt, one kiwi fruit cleaned and diced, and one teaspoon of chopped fresh mint for a delicious smoothie. You have probably noticed that I often recommend non-fat or low-fat yogurt or kefir as a medium for many fruit snacks. These two happen to be in the top ten calcium-rich foods out there. And calcium can reduce dietary fat absorption by a whopping 250 percent. Calcium also suppresses the release of hormones that slow down the metabolism. In addition, kefir and yogurt’s natural combination of calcium with vitamin D improves our sensitivity to insulin. Some people shun dairy for allergic reasons, whether it may be asthma connection or gut sensitivity. However, I would like to set the record straight for kefir and yogurt. Both are cultured fermented foods. The live bacteria in both produce their own lactase, which means that even if you are lactose-intolerant, you can still enjoy them. Kefir and yogurt are also loaded with vitamin B12, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin D, organic acids, and over sixty different strains of live bacteria making them a very rich source of probiotics for the gut. However, if you have absolutely no tolerance for these products, you can easily substitute them with almond or cashew milk. When it comes to healthy eating, my philosophy has always been to stay away from ninety percent of what is sold in the supermarket. Instead, go for fresh fruits and vegetables, and a healthy and organic source of dairy and poultry. Smaller wild fish is a bonus, as are lentils and legumes. Food is much more exciting and safer than medications and should be engaged as a healing modality as much as possible. 40 | Old Naples News April 2026For our second column in Old Naples News, we couldn’t help but smile at our setting: we’re writing this from a lanai overlooking Fifth Avenue South in Naples, watching the parade of people enjoying our city and hearing clinking glasses drift through the air. After decades in Naples real estate, we’ve learned that the best conversations and the best meals, often happen just outside the spotlight. Lately, many of those meals have come from one place we keep returning to: Em-On’s Thai Café.Before we met, our dining habits couldn’t have been more different - Elle was exploring every Asian menu she could find, while Mitch was in what can only be described as a committed relationship with wild-caught blackened salmon, seeing it four to five nights a week. Fortunately, both paths led us to the same conclusion: great food is always worth chasing.ELLE ANDERSON & MITCH NORGARTLuxury real estate professionals, longtime locals, and passionate dinersBetween showings, closings, and client calls, and when season is in full swing, we’ve made a ritual of ordering from Em-On’s and enjoying it on the lanai for dinner and a show of Fifth Avenue’s nightlife. If you’re downtown and craving it, hop onto DoorDash. Yes, it can take a little extra time to arrive, but that anticipation becomes part of the experience. Every time, it’s worth the wait.As self-proclaimed culinary enthusiasts (strictly professional research, of course), we’re always chasing authenticity. That’s what makes Em-On’s stand out. Every detail is thoughtfully considered - especially the spice. You choose your heat level from one to five and be advised - they don’t tone it down for the American palate. Level four is not a suggestion - it’s a lifestyle choice.TheNaples Table

The tom kha balances coconut milk and lime with mushrooms, herbs, and cilantro into a bowl that feels both fiery and soothing. The tom yum is aromatic, layered with lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal, and vegetables that showcase the depth Thai cuisine is known for. Ordering both isn’t indulgent; it’s strategy.Em’s curries are equally memorable. Mitch’s favorite and the best he’s ever had is the panang, which carries a rich, slightly sweet warmth. The massaman leans deep and complex, the gang dang (red curry) delivers a classic Thai kick, and the gang kiew wan (green curry) brings bright herbal vibrancy. Then there’s the jungle curry - rustic, coconut-free, and intense. When Thai cuisine is premade, everything tends to taste similar across restaurants; when it’s authentic like this, you notice distinct layers in every bite. Insider tip: try the Thai donuts! While we love patronizing the wonderful, culturally diverse restaurants throughout our community, we’ve learned we can enjoy their cuisine just as much from the lanai or dining room of our own home - and places like Em-On’s prove it. They remind us why we love both real estate and dining: the magic is often just beyond the obvious. Sometimes the best discoveries aren’t on the main avenue - they’re the ones you share with clients, friends, and anyone lucky enough to join you at the table. And if they happen to like spice level four…we know they’re our kind of people.Until our next table,Elle & MitchWhen Thai cuisine is premade, everything tends to taste similar across restaurants; when it’s authentic like this, you notice distinct layers in every bite.”“

44 | Old Naples News April 2026PARKINSON'S DISEASELORNA FEDELEM, MDApril is Parkinson’s Awareness Month. This month we bring to light this disease that actor Michael J. Fox has lived with for many decades. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects predominately dopamineproducing neurons in a specific area of the brain called substantia nigra.Symptoms generally develop slowly over years. The progression of symptoms is often a bit different from one person to another due to the diversity of the disease. People with PD may experience:• Tremor, mainly at rest and described as pill-rolling tremor in hands. Other forms of tremor are possible.• Bradykinesia or slow movements• Limb rigidity• Gait and balance problemsThe cause remains largely unknown. Although there is no cure, treatment options vary and include medications and surgery. While Parkinson’s itself is not fatal, disease complications can be serious. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) rated complications from PD as the fourteenth cause of death in the United States.TEN EARLY SIGNS OF PARKINSON’S DISEASEIt can be hard to tell if you or a loved one has Parkinson’s disease (PD).Below are ten signs that you might have the disease. No single one of these signs means that you should worry, but if you have more than one sign you should consider making an appointment to talk to your doctor.1. TremorHave you noticed a slight shaking or tremor in your finger, thumb, hand, or chin? A tremor while at rest is a common early sign of Parkinson’s disease.2. ConstipationDo you have trouble moving your bowels without straining every day? Straining to move your bowels can be an early sign of Parkinson’s disease and you should talk to your doctor.3. Loss of SmellHave you noticed you no longer smell certain foods very well? If you seem to have more trouble smelling foods like bananas, dill pickles, or licorice, you should ask your doctor about Parkinson’s disease.4. Trouble SleepingDo you thrash around in bed or act out dreams when you are deeply asleep? Sometimes, your spouse will notice or will want to move to another bed. Sudden movements during sleep may be a sign of Parkinson’s disease.5. Trouble Moving or WalkingDo you feel stiff in your body, arms, or legs? Sometimes stiffness goes away as you move. If it does not, it can be a sign of Parkinson’s disease. An early sign might be stiffness or pain in your shoulder or hips. People sometimes say their feet seem “stuck to the floor.”6. Small HandwritingHas your handwriting gotten much smaller than it was in the past? You may notice the way you write words on a page has changed, such as letter sizes are smaller, and the words are crowded together. A change in handwriting may be a sign of Parkinson’s disease called micrographia.7. A Soft or Low VoiceIf there has been a change in your voice you should see your doctor about whether it could be Parkinson’s disease. Sometimes you might think other people are losing their hearing when really you are speaking more softly.

Feeling dizzy or fainting can be a sign of low blood pressure and can be linked to Parkinson’s disease.10. Hunching OverAre you not standing up as straight as you used to? If you or your family or friends notice that you seem to be stooping, leaning, or slouching when you stand, it could be a sign of Parkinson’s disease.THE IMPORTANCE OF AWARENESSAwareness is key as we work toward a world without Parkinson’s disease. 46 | Old Naples News April 2026IT'S ABOUT A CAREER—NOT A JOBThe Immokalee Foundation has continually adapted to its students’ needs while making an impact in Southwest Florida. The foundation has enriched the lives of motivated students from Immokalee for 34 years—over 18,000 students since its inception and 1,300+ this year alone. The objective from the beginning has been to support students after school and during the summer through programs to ensure they successfully navigate the many demands on their time. It is a focus on comprehensive and individualized support that differentiates The Immokalee Foundation from other organizations with similar goals. The foundation is Southwest Florida’s first and only organization offering a full continuum of support—from middle school through postsecondary education and into a professional career—with impressive measurable outcomes that transform lives. Our emphasis on scholarships is part of our legacy as an awarded affiliate of the state of Florida’s Take Stock in Children program, which provides a dollar-fordollar match with every dollar becoming two dollars in scholarship funding. The goal of many students and their parents has been to ensure that the student has the financial means to provide it. But in the current environment, it is becoming clear that not all students need to graduate from a four-year university to be successful. There is growing support demonstrating that postsecondary focus should be on a successful career, not just a diploma. That may even mean that certification in a field of study from a technical school provides a better opportunity for some students to secure a well-paying job than the investment in a four-year college education. This philosophy is reinforced by local businesses, which are struggling to find well-prepared young professionals. The Immokalee Foundation is positioned to benefit the workforce needs of all of Southwest Florida through our award-winning Career Pathways program. Each year, over 370 foundation students are guided from middle school through high school to select an in-demand career pathway that aligns with their interests. Pathways include Business Management & Entrepreneurship, Education & Human Services, Engineering & Construction Management, and Healthcare.Specifically, the foundation provides guidance, programs, summer camps, and internships to participating students in their chosen career fields. Support also includes a focus on soft skills development to better prepare students for real-world experiences. Much of this is achieved through 100+ volunteer mentors, who meet regularly with their respective mentees. The result? The Immokalee Foundation is creating the well-trained workforce of the future.Even today, Immokalee Foundation alumni design and build the homes you live in and operate many of the businesses you patronize regularly. They teach your children, fulfill vital roles in the nation’s military, and work on your healthcare teams. It’s comforting to know they will be there for us when we need them the most.Regardless of the charitable pathway you choose, please join us in supporting these deserving students. 48 | Old Naples News April 2026THE PROMISE THAT CHANGED MY LIFEDR. LESLIE C. RICCIARDELLISuperintendentCollier County Public SchoolsDuring my senior year at Naples High School, I sat in Mr. Bill Godley’s U.S. Government class. He challenged us to think deeply. He expected more. He believed we were capable of college-level work, which is why he also taught the dual enrollment courses I took through Edison Community College, now Florida Southwestern State College. At the time, I didn’t fully understand what that opportunity meant. I just knew someone believed in me.Mr. Godley passed away not long after he retired. Years later, I had the privilege of working alongside his son, also an exceptional educator. That’s the power of public schools. They are built on legacy. On commitment. On educators who pour into students, and families who carry that impact forward.I care deeply about public education because I am a product of it, and this community is my home. I grew up in this district. Public education changed my trajectory. I know what it means when a system works for a child, and I know what it costs when it doesn’t. I cannot stand the thought of potential going unseen or unsupported. While National Public Schools Week was celebrated in February, the spirit behind it deserves to be honored every day of the year. And that belief in public education is reflected right here in our own community. Nearly 89% of families in Collier County choose public education. That trust matters. This year, our school district reached a historic 94.4% graduation rate, but behind that number are thousands of stories. Stories of belief. Of opportunity. Of educators who open doors students didn’t know existed.Public education is not just a system. It is a promise. And I am honored to lead the very district that once kept that promise to me.Thank you for standing behind our public schools and the students we serve. Together, we will continue protecting that promise for every child. #FLPublicSchoolProudMr. Godley teaching the intricacies of U.S. Government to his students in 1987
