MATRIX V ery little is known about the woman named Marie
by Lauren Groff de France. We know she lived in England in the late
Riverhead Books twelfth century and she left behind a series of lyric
272 Pages poems now known as the Lais of Marie de France.
$28.00 US Otherwise, she is a figure shrouded by the shadows
of time. Lauren Groff chose this woman of great
literary talent to be the central figure in her new
novel, Matrix. With little source material she was
able to draw a fictional portrait of a great woman to
her own satisfaction.
When we meet Marie, she is seventeen years old
and newly banished from the court of Eleanor of Aquitaine to become the new
prioress at an unnamed convent somewhere in the wilds of medieval England.
Groff characterizes her as a large woman, not beautiful but with a fire in her heart.
She goes to the abbey, desolate and grief-stricken at being separated from Eleanor.
The convent is not a happy place—it is cold, damp, and the nuns are starving.
Marie’s fortitude and practical mind soon have things changing at the convent and the lives of
all the women and girls under its roof are vastly improved. But this story is more than the linear
progression from misery to happiness. It is the cyclical nature of daily prayers, the turning of the
seasons, and the wheel of the years where the heart of this novel lies. Almost fable-like, Groff
weaves a matrix of details through lush prose that spiral throughout the pages, bringing themes
of the feminine, mystical visions, and by contrast, the hard work that was the product of those
visions back to us over and over.
And while cycles are readily apparent in the narrative, so too is the straight line of Marie’s
life. It pierces and intersects the spirals so that if it were diagrammed, might resemble the
labyrinth the nuns create in the book to protect their abbey from the nearby town. Groff
marries Marie’s physical strength with her mystical encounters with the Virgin Mary to create
a harmony of flesh and spirit. She also draws a line between being a good woman and being a
great woman, the latter not necessarily the better of the two.
Just because Marie de France is an almost complete fabrication by Groff does not mean her
depiction of medieval monastic life is as well. Careful research and presentation of details pack
this novel. We know she used the real names of women from convent registers so that Wulfhid,
Wevua, and Gytha might not be lost to history. They buzz around Marie like proverbial bees in
a hive would dance around their queen.
A book to be savored, Matrix is a peek into a possible incarnation of the life of Marie de
France. Her beautifully crafted sentences are meant to be read slowly. Short-listed for the 2021
National Book Award, Matrix has a luminous quality that is at once part meditation and part
fever dream.

women in our capitalistic/democratic societies.

The symbolism behind “Christ in the Desert”

“Christ in the Desert” is a fantastic modern reinterpretation
of a traditional artistic theme. Sitting at the center among piles
of rubbish and debris, a weary Christ appears in worn white
and green robes. Christ does not engage the viewer but gazes
downward with a saddened expression. “This painting is how
I see the second coming of Christ,” writes the artist. “War and
urbanizations have ravaged the land, physically, and spiritually.
Who should be saved? Who will listen to the truth?”

• Remember to budget for framing since quality framing can
be as equally important as the artwork itself. Sometimes a
new frame is all that’s required to turn an older work of art
into something fresh and spectacular.

• Light the art in your home properly, particularly sculpture
and art glass. It makes a huge difference in how the art is
viewed.

• Select artwork that has meaning for you and then discuss
your choice with your designer, who can help you find the
best location in your home or business to showcase the art.
They can also assist in placing the artwork properly, not only
for safety but also for best viewing. Professionals say a lot of

In 2020, NPC learned that Governor DeSantis signed our
Local Funding Request into the 2020-2021 budget. We sent
out a request for proposals, and once again, Kimley-Horn rose
to the top of the firms that applied. The Feasibility Study, a
crucial step in making the dream of this trail a reality, began
in May.

The effort launched with extensive outreach to stakeholders
representing local and state agencies, business and tourism,
community foundations, environment and conservation, parks
and recreation, tribal nations, healthcare, and community
developers. The study team conducted a comprehensive
existing conditions survey of the study corridor and currently
analyzing alternative routes.

We will be seeking input on proposed trail alignments at a
Public Open House held at River Park Community Center
on January 26, 2022, from 4-7 p.m. The team will next conduct
a targeted environmental analysis to get a head start on the next
phase of work. Completion of the study is expected by June
2022, with project segments ready for programming, design,
and construction.

Naples Pathways Coalition is hosting a free public event,
the Paradise Coast Trail Community Celebration, to mark the
kick-off of the trail at Baker Park on February 5, 2022, from
1-4 p.m.

Some planned activities include a bike rodeo, bike decorat-
ing contest, a children’s bike ride, a 1K fun run, a bounce house,
a splash pad, and games. Adults will enjoy tasty treats, cornhole,
a pet parade, giveaways, and more. Sponsorship opportunities
are still available. Contact [email protected] for
more information.

We urge the community to come out to the Open House
in January and the Community Celebration in February. The
Paradise Coast Trail is going to be an incredible amenity for
Collier County. We need everyone’s support to get it built to
enjoy it in our lifetime and leave this remarkable legacy for our
children and grandchildren!

It is important to understand that
backup is a process. As long as new data is There are several services that offer
being created and changes are being made, online backup services, you can search for
backups also need to be updated. “online backups” and see what is available.

There are two types of backup strategies:
local and off-site. A local backup is usually

storage capacity, so the larger the storage needed, the higher the
annual cost. I personally use the service provided by BackBlaze
(backblaze.com). They allow backup of not only your computer
but also connected external hard drives, so if you keep photos
or music on separate drives, those will be safe as well if a local
crash occurs. You can also backup multiple computers under
their affordable family plans. Another feature I like is the
BackBlaze app for tablets and smartphones. It allows access to
any backed-up files from anywhere using your portable device.
So, if you need a photo that is on your desktop in Naples, and
you are in New York, just open the app on your device and you
can display, share, save and print that photo!

Backing up your phone or tablet

You can set up your Android phone or tablet to
automatically back up your files using these steps:

• On your Android phone, open the Google One app.
• At the top, tap storage.
• Scroll to the device backup section.
• If this is your first phone backup: tap set up data

backup.
• If this isn’t your first phone backup: tap view details.
• To see your backup settings, tap manage backup.
• Choose your backup settings.
• If you get advice to install an app, update an app, or

change your settings, follow the onscreen steps. Then, go
back to the Google One app to finish.
• If asked, tap allow permissions.
• At the top left, tap back.

To back up an iOS device such
as an iPhone or iPad:

• Open settings
• Go to settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud

Backup.
• Turn on iCloud backup. iCloud automatically backs up

your iPhone daily when iPhone is connected to power,
locked, and connected to Wi-Fi. ...
• To perform a manual backup, tap back up now.

Which backup is for you?

Local backups using a connected drive are fast, inexpensive,
and convenient. However, if a disaster such as a flood, fire, or
electrical surge occurs, both your computer and backup could
be damaged. Online backups are becoming faster and also less
expensive. They are convenient as they can be accessed with any
online connection but be sure to make sure that the service’s
default backup plan includes the documents and settings
important to you.

In closing, remember that a backup is only as useful as the
last time it was performed—if your computer crashes and the
most recent backup you have is from 2017, that may not be of
much help.

May you have 1,000 backups and never need one.
