MATRIX V ery little is known about the woman named Marie
by Lauren Groff de France. We know she lived in England in the late
Riverhead Books twelfth century and she left behind a series of lyric
272 Pages poems now known as the Lais of Marie de France.
$28.00 US Otherwise, she is a figure shrouded by the shadows
of time. Lauren Groff chose this woman of great
literary talent to be the central figure in her new
novel, Matrix. With little source material she was
able to draw a fictional portrait of a great woman to
her own satisfaction.
When we meet Marie, she is seventeen years old
and newly banished from the court of Eleanor of Aquitaine to become the new
prioress at an unnamed convent somewhere in the wilds of medieval England.
Groff characterizes her as a large woman, not beautiful but with a fire in her heart.
She goes to the abbey, desolate and grief-stricken at being separated from Eleanor.
The convent is not a happy place—it is cold, damp, and the nuns are starving.
Marie’s fortitude and practical mind soon have things changing at the convent and the lives of
all the women and girls under its roof are vastly improved. But this story is more than the linear
progression from misery to happiness. It is the cyclical nature of daily prayers, the turning of the
seasons, and the wheel of the years where the heart of this novel lies. Almost fable-like, Groff
weaves a matrix of details through lush prose that spiral throughout the pages, bringing themes
of the feminine, mystical visions, and by contrast, the hard work that was the product of those
visions back to us over and over.
And while cycles are readily apparent in the narrative, so too is the straight line of Marie’s
life. It pierces and intersects the spirals so that if it were diagrammed, might resemble the
labyrinth the nuns create in the book to protect their abbey from the nearby town. Groff
marries Marie’s physical strength with her mystical encounters with the Virgin Mary to create
a harmony of flesh and spirit. She also draws a line between being a good woman and being a
great woman, the latter not necessarily the better of the two.
Just because Marie de France is an almost complete fabrication by Groff does not mean her
depiction of medieval monastic life is as well. Careful research and presentation of details pack
this novel. We know she used the real names of women from convent registers so that Wulfhid,
Wevua, and Gytha might not be lost to history. They buzz around Marie like proverbial bees in
a hive would dance around their queen.
A book to be savored, Matrix is a peek into a possible incarnation of the life of Marie de
