miles along the western coast of Ireland,
knee-deep in purple heather and ankle-
deep in spongy peat bogs. On the
landscape of my dream are narrow paths
to nowhere, punctuated with
the forlorn ruins of stone
cottages abandoned during
the potato famine. I don’t
dream of the horrific stories
infused in those stones (that’s

The ED staff never knows on any given day how many or

anything. The new facility has a thrombectomy-capable stroke
center, a dedicated 128-slice CAT scanner for rapid diagnosis,
and two dedicated x-ray rooms.

“I’m most excited about our new resuscitation bays,” said
Dr. Bethel. “For individuals needing acute or critical care, we
have overhead gas booms and monitor booms. The patient
is no longer tied to the wall, so the physician and staff have
full 360-degree access,” easing procedures such as intubation,
“without having to navigate around wires.”

A tremendous amount of thought and planning went
into the layout and facilities in the Baker ED, with Bethel
participating in design meetings as far back as May 2018.

“We put the physicians and the charge nurse in the center
of the ER where the most critical patients are. We have a direct
line of sight to every ambulance as it arrives,” said Bethel.

The center utilizes innovatively designed space, lighting,
and colors with Southwest Florida’s aging population in mind,
to reduce falls and provide a calming environment.

“We have a unique design to accommodate our strong
seasonal fluctuations,” he said. “As volume increases, the ED
has the capacity to expand and take on more patients, opening
more space or shrinking to a center core as required. More
comfortable and welcoming waiting rooms for patients and
family were also incorporated.”

“We needed to grow and expand our emergency services to
continue to meet the needs of our growing population,” said
Chris Raphael. “NCH is the premier facility in Collier County
for emergencies.”

make small changes to your lifestyle that could add years to your life. And it isn’t all about diet
and exercise. In fact, some of them, like putting family first, hanging out with friends, and having
a glass of wine every evening sound downright pleasant. That’s the point—it’s supposed to be. Yes,
he asks you to eat a more plant-based diet and take the stairs instead of the elevator, but this is a
whole-life approach, not just what you are eating.
The Okinawans have ikigai. The Nicoya Costa Ricans have a plan de vida. They both mean
roughly the same thing: a life’s purpose, or a reason to get out of bed in the morning. Having one
makes a big difference in a person’s outlook. Stressed out? The Greeks from Ikaria take a nap.

Saturday (their Sabbath) with family: no screens, no chores, no homework. And the Sardinians
have a happy hour where they drink good red wine and laugh with their friends.

dropped by eight percent and remain the lowest in the state of Florida.
