8 | North Naples News Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 by LUCITT & CO Antilles’ newest model Open plan + decorator style = best Coach Home yet cool, tonal palette, plush contemporary furnishings, and fine finishes distinguish Antilles’ newest decorator model as a thoroughly high-style residence. The secret is its expanded Saba floor plan, an open design that spaces the living and dining areas apart just enough to allow for separate usages, but close enough for when real life overlaps. As in all of Antilles’ floorplans, the classic coach home’s kitchen gets top billing for its wonderfully expanded peninsula breakfast bar, a true heart of the home gathering place for meals, conversations, and serene views of its private landscaped orientation. The model’s main living area is lit to perfection by recessed lighting and an elegant chandelier. But more than that, and counterpoint to the Saba’s shadow-colored upholstered furnishings, light seems to catch and bounce across its reflective surfaces. Mirrored and metallic pieces are used to great effect to enliven the home. Show-stopper lamps, a small assemblage of textural wall objects too dissimilar to ignore, bright quartz and the refracted shimmer of kitchen backsplash tiles— even the silvery Agreeable Gray walls themselves—are finished to reflect rather than absorb light. The main living area is as inviting as its deep-cushioned seating and A as engaging as its light show detailing. Color is used sparingly throughout the model, but always as a harmonizing underscore to its tonal palette. The bold master suite does it best. The spacious setting is arranged to focus on its central furnishings that seem to rise like a deepest Aegean-blue oasis above the reedy woven furnishings and cushy carpeting. It is a spare and masterful effect. The Saba’s split-bedroom floorplan locates the master suite across the unit from the guest rooms, which can be accessed by a separate side entrance apart from the front door. This was a popular feature in Phase One Classic Coach Homes and has been maintained through the balance of their Phase Two development. Like the home’s impact- and wind-rated front door, the multi-windowed side entrance lets the sunlight in, keeping the guest wing bright all day. The model presents its third bedroom as an office to illustrate its flex space functionality. In a part of Southwest Florida notable for its high resort living, Antilles’ location is exceptional for its quiet, cul-de-sac location and still natural preserve-enclosed setting minutes from the best white sand beaches to the south and all the stellar boutique attractions to the west that Naples offers. Sun, serenity, and southern sweet tea still resonate as its defining theme. Antilles is a gated community two miles south of Tamiami Trail East (US 41), off Collier Boulevard (SR 951). For GPS guidance, search Port au Prince Road, Naples FL 34114. When driving, turn east on Port Au Prince Road and continue to the Clubhouse, 155 Indies Drive East, Naples, FL, 34114. Antilles is represented by JRW Developer Resources, a division of John R. Wood Properties, Christie’s International Real Estate. Please refer to AntillesNaples. com to register or call 239.691.4455 for an appointment. The Sales Center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Jaime and Kerry are on site to present the property.

Phase 3 Released...and it’s going fast! Antilles is conceived as an island resort set off by its own richly landscaped walls of deep green foliage. Its setting is its centerpiece. 12 | North Naples News Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 ven though she is now the Superintendent who—as Chief Executive Officer of the District— is charged with, among many duties, operating 60 school and support sites, recommending personnel to the School Board to fill positions for the County’s largest employer, and overseeing academic instruction for nearly 50,000 students, there is one area Dr. Leslie Ricciardelli is not willing to delegate: the granular process of forecasting graduation rates. “I look at every single student, and I know how they are graduating,” Dr. Ricciardelli said this spring while monitoring the Class of 2023. “Are they graduating by passing the State Assessment or will they graduate because of their SAT/ ACT scores?” She developed—and still monitors with colleagues— strategies for schools to assist students who need extra support to earn a diploma. When students return August 10, they will reunite with and make new friends, swap summer stories, and see the smiling faces of staff ready to work and make memories. Specifically at the elementary and middle school levels, programming for gifted and academically talented students is one key area getting a refresh to better meet student needs. This summer, district staff members have E Raised in Naples Dr. Leslie Ricciardelli ready to lead and refine academic programming been developing our own CCPS advanced curriculum, based on Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards. In alignment with our local School Board’s Academic Priorities to improve math and literacy learning outcomes for all students, we are enhancing the rigor in our curriculum for gifted and advanced students. Additionally, schools will have greater flexibility to schedule students based on their unique needs. An example of refining options would be some students may be eligible for advanced math or advanced English language arts, or both. Students in grades three through eight who score level four or five in English Language Arts (ELA) on the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) and/or meet gifted eligibility will be scheduled into advanced ELA for School Year 2023-24. Students who score level four or five on the FAST and/ or meet eligibility in grades three through seven in mathematics will be scheduled into advanced mathematics. Eligibility requirements for Algebra I in eighth grade will remain the same. Additionally, current advanced course offerings remain at the high school level, including AICE Cambridge. “Everything comes back to what is best for kids and how we can help them achieve,” Dr. Ricciardelli often says. She prioritizes customer service for our CCPS families and empowers employees to engage and ultimately enact positive outcomes. She credits her parents, who moved to Naples when she was two years old, for instilling hard work values and treating people the way you would want to be treated. A young Leslie pitched in to help her parents run the Anchorage Motel, formerly located in Old Naples at the corner of Third Street and Eighth Avenue South. From answering phones, making beds, and cleaning toilets, she did it all! She fondly remembers families who 4th Quarter Celebration at Lake Park Elementary

Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 North Naples News | 13 by CHAD OLIVER Executive Director of Communications & Community Engagement Collier County Public Schools would come back—year after year—because they had great, hospitable experiences. When deciding where to raise a family, Dr. Ricciardelli and her husband of 28 years, Rob Ricciardelli, chose Naples in large part because of the quality of our schools. “When I was appointed the principal at Lely High, our daughter, Jessica, was zoned for a different high school,” Dr. Ricciardelli remembered. “[ Jessica] said, ‘Mom, I’m going to go wherever you are because wherever you go is where the best teachers will be.’” Now, following the School Board’s appointment, Dr. Ricciardelli has the chance to positively impact education across Collier County. “You really impact kids’ lives,” Dr. Ricciardelli explained. “You change the trajectory of their lives by what you offer to them.” When you see her around town, be sure to say “hi” and you might mention a little-known fact. Our Superintendent really enjoys the solitude of doing yard work around the house. “No one talks to you because if they do, they might have to help,” Dr. Ricciardelli said while laughing. 14 | North Naples News Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 Sjögren’s by LORNA FEDELEM, MD A systemic autoimmune disease that affects the entire body jögren’s (“SHOW-grens’) is a systemic autoimmune disease that affects the entire body. Along with symptoms of extensive dryness, other serious complications include profound fatigue, chronic pain, major organ involvement, neuropathies, and lymphomas. Today, as many as four million Americans are living with this disease. Sjögren’s can be challenging to recognize or diagnose because symptoms may mimic those of menopause, drug side effects, or medical conditions such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and multiple sclerosis and thus makes receiving a prompt diagnosis difficult. As a systemic disease affecting the entire body, symptoms may remain steady or worsen over time. There is not one single progression of the disease, and this can make it challenging for patients and their physicians. While some people experience mild discomfort, others suffer debilitating symptoms that greatly impair their functioning. Early diagnosis and proper treatments are important as they may prevent serious complications and greatly improve a patient’s quality of life. About half of the time Sjögren’s occurs alone, and the other half occurs in the presence of another autoimmune connective tissue disease such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, or Scleroderma. In addition, Sjögren’s is often misrepresented as a rare disease, however, it is estimated that four million Americans are living with this disease, making it one of the most prevalent autoimmune diseases. SYMPTOMS VARY FROM PERSON TO PERSON BUT MAY INCLUDE: • Neurological problems, concentration/memory loss, “brain fog”, dysautonomia, headaches • Dry eyes, corneal ulcerations, and infections • Dry nose, recurrent sinusitis, nosebleeds • Dry mouth, mouth sores, dental decay, difficulty with chewing, speech, taste, and dentures • Swollen, painful parotid/salivary glands • Difficulty swallowing, heartburn, reflux, esophagitis • Fatigue, vasculitis, lymphoma, dry skin, skin sensitivity to UV light • Recurrent bronchitis, interstitial lung disease, pneumonia • Arthritis, joint/muscle pain • Abnormal liver function tests, chronic active autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis • Peripheral neuropathy, Raynaud’s • Stomach upset, gastroparesis, autoimmune pancreatitis • Irritable bowel, autoimmune gastrointestinal dysmotility • Interstitial cystitis, interstitial nephritis including renal tubular acidosis, glomerulonephritis • Vaginal dryness, vulvodynia; chronic prostatitis HOW IS SJÖGREN’S DIAGNOSED? There is no single test that will confirm the diagnosis of Sjögren’s and thus physicians must conduct a series of tests and ask about symptoms the patient is experiencing. Rheumatologists have primary responsibility for diagnosing and managing Sjögren’s and can conduct a series of tests and ask about symptoms. Your eye doctor or an oral medicine specialist also might run tests if Sjögren’s is suspected. Physicians will use several tests and questions to determine a Sjögren’s diagnosis. These tests may include some of the following: • Blood Tests -A (or Ro) and SS-B (or La): Marker antibodies for Sjögren’s. 70% of Sjögren’s patients are positive for SS-A and 40% are positive for SS-B. S

Call and schedule a complimentary meet and greet with Dr. Fedelem. 9150 Galleria Ct., Suite 200, Naples, FL 34109 LornaFedelemMD.com | 239.580.6390 Also found in lupus patients. • Eye Tests -Schirmer test: Measures tear production. -Rose Bengal and Lissamine Green: Uses dyes to examine the surface of the eyes for dry spots. • Dental Tests -Salivary Flow: Measures the amount of saliva produced over a certain period of time. -Salivary Gland Biopsy (usually in the lower lip): Confirms lymphocytic infiltration of the minor salivary glands. QUESTIONS USED IN DIAGNOSIS MAY INCLUDE: • Ocular Symptoms -How long have you been experiencing dry eyes? -Do you have a foreign body sensation in your eye? -How often do you use artificial tears each day? • Oral Symptoms -How long have you had a dry mouth? -Do you experience salivary gland swelling? -Do you need liquids to swallow food? In addition to objective and subjective testing, your physician will also take a complete medical history as well as discuss the various symptoms you may be experiencing. Your physician will then consider the results of all these tests and his/her examination to arrive at a final diagnosis. A Sjögren’s patient’s treatment path should be decided on a case-by-case basis after the potential benefits and side effects are weighed by patients and their healthcare providers. Since Sjögren’s affects each patient differently, a personalized plan should be developed by you and your physician, dentist, eye care provider, and other specialists about how to treat your various symptoms. In some cases, lifestyle changes can help certain symptoms such as fatigue and gastrointestinal reflux, and overthe-counter products can help alleviate symptoms such as dryness. Sjögren’s patients are often managed with a combination of strategies, over-thecounter products, and prescription drugs. Most patients will need prescription medications at some point to help control their disease and reduce the potential for complications. Several different medications are available that can be used to manage symptoms. Currently, no single medication has been conclusively proven to slow the progression of Sjögren’s or treat all aspects of the disease. Please see your primary care physician if you think you have any of these symptoms for a full exam and assessment. 16 | North Naples News Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 THE GABLES $2,100,000 956 Spanish Moss Trail A Step Back in Time Walking Tours with Naples Historical Society© by JOHN TELISCHAK Naples Historical Society Education Manager n the morning, the area around Naples Historical Society’s Historic Palm Cottage™ has a buzz of activity. Joggers and bicyclists get their workouts in. Dog walkers and strollers enjoy a leisurely saunter. Anglers pull their carts westward toward the azure brine, carrying their saltkissed, well-loved, and well-worn gear. Even if there is no catch to bring home, it is still better than a root canal or doing one’s taxes. Beachgoers arrive to claim their stake on the beach. Carrying a kaleidoscope of umbrellas, coolers, and towels. If children are in tow, there will be sand toys, snacks, possibly diapers, and definitely wipes. All are trying to enjoy a perfect view before the sun reaches its zenith, the mercury rises, and afternoon storms roll in. You will also see another group strolling along. They are led by one of the Naples Historical Society’s enthusiastic walking tour docents. This individual is an artist, painting the canvas of the present with the antiquated sights and sounds of Naples’ past. Their eager group of listeners will hear how the Naples Pier, despite its’ current state, courtesy of Hurricane Ian, will be rebuilt in the same spot as its predecessors. How guests from the Naples Hotel danced there in their evening finery as the sun disappeared beneath the waves, all while avoiding the offal from lucky angler’s catches. The group is on the Naples Historical Society’s Official Walking Tour of the Naples Historic District. They will stand where the Naples Hotel once stood. Their docent will gesture to the approximate spot where the lobby was and where the hotel’s bell once sat, its gleaming pewter exterior, awaiting the hands of guests checking in, booking a guide, or simply obtaining towels. They will cross the area where the I first Neapolitans, the Calusa, built a canal that cut across our city from the Gulf to Naples Bay. Construction began during the reign of Charlemagne and saw generations of Calusa utilize it for their maritime activities. The highlight of the tour will be when they enter the nearby residential neighborhood. Where they will hear stories of the beautiful private historic homes which share a connection to Naples’ history. Each home is a diamond, embodying stories of Naples’ past, contained in a lovingly restored and maintained exterior. Naples Historical Society’s Official Walking Tours are also a Blue Zones of Southwest Florida-approved activity! If you are curious about our city’s past, we invite you to join us on a Wednesday morning! Walking tours must be pre-booked online at the Society’s website at: napleshistoricalsociety.org or by calling 239.261.8164. Admission goes directly to the upkeep of Historic Palm Cottage and its beautiful grounds. PLEASE NOTE: Walking Tours will resume in November of 2023. Naples Historical Society Walking tours were put on hiatus after Hurricane Ian out of sensitivity to the local community. Many residents here in Old Naples had major damage to their homes, and in some cases sadly, suffered a complete loss. Many homes that are being restored are still in the midst of that painstaking process at the time of this writing. Naples Historical Society is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that serves the community by maintaining Historic Palm Cottage, opening it for tours for all ages, hosting educational events throughout the year and working on major initiatives to benefit the community well into the future. It is based at Historic Palm Cottage, 137 12th Avenue South, Naples Florida 34102, one block east of the Naples Pier. Naples Historical Society receives no government funding and relies on membership dues and donations to accomplish its mission. Historic Palm Cottage was built in 1895 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 20 | North Naples News Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 by ROB EDWARDS Managing Director – Investments Senior PIM® Portfolio Manager Edwards Group of Wells Fargo Advisors EdwardsGroupNaples.com Stuck in the middle The Sandwich Generation OUR WEALTH MANAGEMENT TEAM’S MOTTO: LET YOUR MONEY SERVE YOU. However, for many of our clients, we find that their money is often serving the needs of others, too. Squeezed in the middle between caring for aging parents and supporting college-aged children, this cohort is often referred to as “The Sandwich Generation.” People in this group often feel incredible financial stress. And who can blame them? They’ve worked hard to build a nest egg for themselves and, all of a sudden, Mom or Dad becomes ill, while at the same time, Jack or Jill just needs a little more help getting on their feet. IT CAN ALL BE PHYSICALLY, EMOTIONALLY, AND FINANCIALLY DRAINING. To manage the competing demands, here are six tips for setting those priorities to help you deliver the support your loved ones need — without shortchanging yourself. 1. Take care of your future first. Saving enough for your retirement should be a top priority. You have to take care of your needs before you help your parents and your children. 2. Create or update your investment plan. Create an investment plan that will help you balance your financial goals with the needs of your children and parents. Review your budget, analyze your expenses, and set savings targets to help you prioritize planning for an upcoming expense, such as college costs or long-term care for your parents. 3. Review your insurance coverage. Helping protect your assets is always a good idea, but it’s even more important when you have two generations depending on you. Make sure you have enough life insurance in case something happens to you to pay off your mortgage and other debt and to help cover the future living expenses of your dependents. And don’t forget disability insurance. 4. Check-in on your parents’ financial health. Though it might seem awkward, talk to your parents about their wishes for the future and their financial health. What financial assets and expenses do they have? How do they plan to meet their financial obligations? Do they have a plan to cover the costs of long-term care? This conversation can help you determine how much financial support you may need to provide. Also, make sure your parents have done adequate estate planning, and ask for copies of their will or trust, durable power of attorney, health care power of attorney, and advance health care directive. Make sure your own estate planning documents are complete and updated as well. 5. Consider reducing financial support for grown children. Many parents still help their grown children with their finances — sometimes even to their detriment. If you are paying for your adult kids’ cell phone bill or car insurance expenses, for example, talk with them about the steps they can take to start becoming more financially independent. 6. Look for ways to help reduce your taxes. In some cases, you may be able to claim your aging parents as dependents. Also, check with a tax advisor to see if their medical expenses qualify as a tax deduction. 24 | North Naples News Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 KIDS Southwest Florida is bringing hope, homes, and healing to kids and families across Southwest Florida. 4KIDS began in Broward County in 1997, and in the years to come expanded to Palm Beach County and four Treasure Coast counties. As 4KIDS considered future communities to serve, the needs across Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, and Lee counties stood out. In 2022, 693 babies, children, and teens entered foster care across these five counties. Of those children in foster care, 134 of them had to live in shelters or group homes because there weren’t enough foster families. In March of this year, the 4KIDS Southwest Florida team hosted the grand opening of their office space. Representative Spencer Roach, Albert Griffith, aide to State Senator Jonathan Martin, Kevin Anderson, mayor of Ft. Myers, Nadereh Salim, CEO of Children’s Network of Southwest Florida, and more, all came together to celebrate this momentous community occasion. In response to this urgent community need, 4KIDS Southwest Florida aims to secure 54 new 4KIDS Foster Families by 2025. These homes would serve 94 unique children across all five counties. In addition to foster care, 4KIDS Southwest Florida offers the 4KIDS EPIC Therapeutic Approach. This trauma-informed approach addresses kids’ emotional, physical, intellectual, and character-based needs. EPIC includes one-on-one therapy, family therapy, and training for parents and community members. By 2025, 4KIDS Southwest Florida plans to offer 4,800 hours of clinical care to 240 children and parents. In addition to foster homes and trauma-informed care, 4KIDS Southwest Florida also brings prevention-based care to help at-risk families and keep kids from entering foster care when possible through CarePortal. 30 | North Naples News Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 Second book in the award-winning "Toofer & the Giblet" children's series released by Dragon Horse Publishing ragon Horse Publishing, an independent publishing house based in Naples, has announced the official release of “Toofer & The Giblet in the Big City,” the second book in the multi-award-winning series of children’s literature. Written by Pine Island resident Paulette LeBlanc and charmingly illustrated by Ukrainian artist Dmitry Morozov, “Toofer & The Giblet in the Big City” reunites the title characters, Toofer and The Giblet, two mice who strike out for an excitementfilled adventure as they wander outside of their home forest of Nimblewood for the first time. The best friends have opposite personalities; Toofer is a homebody, while The Giblet yearns for adventure. But together they find plenty of action in the Big City, including peering down at the bright lights from a cousin’s rooftop mousehole; meeting new animal friends; listening to jazz at the Concert Hall; and feasting on egg rolls, bagels and pizza. LeBlanc was born in New York, raised in Los Angeles, and has now lived in Southwest Florida for more than 30 years. As the current editor of the Pine Island Eagle and previously serving as managing editor of Gulf Coast Woman Magazine, she has found writing fiction the most creative and perhaps the most suitable form of her work. “Toof and Gib share a number of heartfelt stories interwoven with laughter and tears,” said LeBlanc. “There are so many life lessons about the genuine value of friendship, prizing honesty and acting with integrity that we can learn through these two characters.” Morozov, the illustrator commissioned for the series, is an architect by training who fell in love with watercolor. His art sublimely captures the animals and their fun experiences. “I enjoy being surrounded by children, friends, cats and dogs, and now Toofer & The Giblet have been added to the list. I’ve fallen in love with them,” said Morozov. “It’s an amazing tale of friendship and with each book in the series the magic continues to grow.” The first book of “Toofer & The Giblet” was released in December 2021 and has earned numerous accolades, including being named a Finalist 2022 International Book Awards for both Children’s Fiction; Best Cover Design: Fiction and 2022 The Bookfest First Place Award for Children’s Fiction – Fables; 2022 The BookFest Second Place Award for Children’s Fiction – Chapter Books; and 2022 BlueInk Review Notable Book. LeBlanc began writing the series of seven books in 2010. The books are suggested for children ages six to ten and aspire to delight parents, grandparents, and teachers everywhere. 32 | North Naples News Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 IN ART ommunity School of Naples Junior Ella Schulze has a passion for art and a mission to re-establish beauty as art’s true purpose. Ella interned at East West Fine Art this summer and has written an essay on the fundamental subject: Why Beauty Matters. Leeza Arkhangelskaya, owner of East West Fine Art Gallery is a graduate of Community School herself. Both women credit the high school’s great art program as being instrumental in their decisions to study and work in the sphere of art. Philosopher and writer, Roger Scruton, asks questions about beauty and its significance. It is his and other philosophers’ job to understand our nature as spiritual beings. To his belief, our world has turned its back on beauty, creating a spiritual desert. Human language, manners, and modes of self-expression have become corrupt since the start of the twentieth century. Beauty is seen as unimportant, and swarms of disturbing art have created a cult of ugliness. The loss of NEW FACES C WHY BEAUTY MATTERS by ELLA SCHULZE Ella Schulze interning at East West Fine Art Gallery

Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 North Naples News | 33 beauty has resulted in a loss of meaning in life itself. Scruton believes that beauty should be valued just as much as truth and goodness. It acts as a remedy for chaos and brings affirmation in joy. A pivotal moment marking the loss of beauty in art was Marcel Duchamp’s signed urinal. It was a satirical piece with the intent to mock the current period of art. Other artists of the time took it as an approval that anything could be deemed art. Consequently, a herd of artists followed Duchamp’s lead and created “non-art.” This ranged from the action of turning a light on and off, to feces in a can, to a simple pile of bricks. These pieces show that art had been reduced to nothing but a simple gesture. There was no more need for creativity, for anybody could now be an artist. Artists were now inspired by their belief in the negativity of the world. From their understanding, this disturbing world calls for a need for disturbing art. In their eyes, finding beauty meant you were out of touch with reality. In my opinion, their art does not show reality but takes revenge on it. By prioritizing usefulness over beauty, they lost both. If they would choose to prioritize beauty, what they do would be useful. Modern architecture is a great example of this. Many buildings have no use because people shun them due to their dreadful appearance. Many of these artists’ primary goals are to create a brand for themselves. Careless work is turned in for the sole purpose of making a profit. Their creativity has completely declined. Rather than endorsing this decline, we need to return to the path that led us to appreciate beauty in the first place. From my perspective, modern art often tunes out the pure joy and light that life offers by focusing solely on the negativity in the world. Many artists also seem to create pieces for the sole purpose of coordinating with home decor. There is no true life seen on the canvas anymore. It feels as though we have lost our ability to create meaningful pieces to show future generations, whereas Russia in the 20th century had distinct styles of art representing each decade. For example, the 1900s used symbolism to express their inner emotions and spiritual truths. The 30s utilized realism to depict the life of a Soviet, with communism glorified. Following World War II in the 40s, the many challenges that the Russians endured were expressed with paintings showing patriotism and sacrifice. Our current generation has no movement that resonates with our surrounding lives. There is a strong sense of urgency and a demand for change in modern art. Art should be an inspiration for the life around us. If our art could regain meaning, it could mend the mess that many current artists have created. East West Fine Art has two Naples locations, in Mercato: 9115 Strada Place #5155, and downtown: 472 5th Avenue South. 34 | North Naples News Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 BOOK REVIEW reviewed by anna karras ate summer is a time for travel and vacation. If, for whatever reason, you are unable to join the throngs of tourists flocking to Europe this summer, try this classic travel narrative about a time that no longer exists. Armchair travel has never been so engaging or exciting. With a thirst for adventure from a young age, Patrick Leigh Fermor wanted to walk the length of Europe. And so, he did. Starting from the Hook of Holland on December 8, 1933, he walked all the way to Constantinople (modern day Istanbul, Turkey). It took him a little over two years to complete his journey. A Time of Gifts is a chronicle of the first half of his travels, from the Netherlands to the Danube. Walking with only a rucksack containing a few clothes he often slept in barns and hayricks. But he also had letters of introduction that helped him into some of the most famous sitting rooms in Europe. In the years between the wars, we see a time of faded gentility and crumbling castles. Fermor uses his critical eye, charming prose, and masterful storytelling to lay the scenes before us. He includes humor and good spirits that take him across the landscape. From the snow-covered Rotterdam to the beer halls of Munich, to the banks of the Danube in Prague and Budapest, we see the landscape between the wars. Rumbles of conflict can be felt in Munich where Fermor encountered thuggish Brown Shirts and the terrifying black-clad SS. His descriptions are rich and full of detail and his escapades are humorous and full of good fortune. This is not a book to be rushed. Instead, savor the travels a piece at a time. Linger over the almost-poetic phrases, and laugh at the mishaps. And if the book is a pleasure, continue his story in Between the Woods and the Water. (Bicycle polo, anyone?) The travel writer for his age, Patrick Leigh Fermor folds us into his story and paints with words to bring us to a place far from where we sit. ∞ AUTHOR'S PROFILE Patrick Leigh Fermor (known to his friends and Paddy) was an adventurer and travel writer. Born in London in 1915, he received a classical education, including languages. He eventually joined the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) in World War II and was parachuted onto Crete to help with the resistance. Along with his comradein-arms, Stanley Moss, he successfully kidnapped a German general, marching him over the rugged White Mountains to a waiting submarine on the coast. He and his wife, Joan, built a house in Kardamyli, Greece. He died in 2011 at the age of 96. L A TIME OF GIFTS by Patrick Leigh Fermor Publisher: NYRB 321 Pages $11.99 US

36 | North Naples News Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 whopping 80% of adults over 65 years of age have one chronic disease. And a full 77% have at least two! But it’s not like we get the disease suddenly and out of the blue. We’ve been on the path our whole lives. Stress is one of the crucial factors which slowly but steadily works on our decline. It comes as no surprise to anyone that how we think and feel affects our health. The trouble is that we are unable to objectively scrutinize our own feelings. The people we trust will often not take the time to do it with us either. As the decorated researcher, Dr. Candace Pert, Ph.D., once said: “As our feelings change, this mixture of peptides travels throughout your body and your brain. And then they are literally changing the chemistry of every cell in your body.” I would humbly add that it is not just what we think and feel but it is also how long those thoughts and feelings last that will yield the undesirable consequences. The so-called, “fight or flight” stress response is protective in the context of short periods of stress. It was designed by Mother Nature to protect us against clear and present danger. However, the same inborn system can cause damage and illness in the setting of chronic/ continuous stress, whether it is physical or psychological. Doctors call the state of chronically stressed autonomic nervous system—a sympathetic dominant state. Emotional stress increases catecholamine metabolism which increases oxidative stress by increasing the production of free radicals. It is important to note that stressful A events in early childhood affect our sensitivity to subsequent stressful events. Thus, taking a very thorough history dating back to our early childhood, and sometimes even to the time preceding our birth, is of paramount importance in uncovering the triggers and antecedent mediators of the current illness and addressing them. For example, a 2010 study published in Child Development magazine found that increased maternal stress was significantly associated with infant temperamental difficulties from birth to three years of age (period studied). Another 2004 study revealed that high levels of prenatal stress may negatively affect fetal brain development as evidenced by lower language and intellectual abilities in five-year-old toddlers. In a 2014 study, scientists evaluated children born to mothers who lived in Montreal and were pregnant during the severe two-week 1998 ice storm, that cut the power off in the large residential areas. The mothers experienced profound physical and psychological stress and their children born after the storm were found to be prone to asthma and autism. Stress damage can truly transcend generations. I am sure you all have your own examples of how the stress of World War I and World War II has affected the health of more than one generation in your own family. If we treat the client’s presenting chronic illness without addressing their stress-generating Mind-Body imbalance, we are then missing the entire point of functional healing, which recognizes the body’s innate wisdom and the need to remove the Chronic Illness and Stress by DR KOGAN Concierge Holistic Internal Medicine a Functional Medicine Perspective

A comprehensive study in the National Review of Immunology confirmed the chilling implications that stress can have on a person’s health: • Increased susceptibility to infection • More severe illness • Diminished response to vaccines • Reactivated latent viral infections • Delayed wound healing • Increased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines which are associated with a spectrum of age-related diseases • Exacerbation of neurodegenerative disorders To this, I would add that chronic stress is associated with a higher risk of developing hypertension and with a preference for sugary and high-fat foods. By making poor food choices, stressed people close the catch-22 loop by increasing the toxic burden for their bodies to deal with. A 2019 study in Clinical Gastroenterology & Hepatology found that chronic stress can impact digestion, absorption, appetite, and nutrient bioavailability by affecting our microbiome. In fact, we have all heard about the connection between chronic stress and the development and severity of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms. 42 | North Naples News Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 he Naples Players (TNP) is announcing that local philanthropists Rocco and Joan Di Lillo have donated $1.5 million towards TNP’s capital renovation. “This donation recognizes the power of live performing arts and how it plays a role in lifting spirits, bringing people together and inspiring us all,” say Rocco and Joan. The gift will be signified through the naming of the theater’s new technical theatre wing, encompassing the Scene Shop, Props Shop, Costume Shop, and Technical Offices. The new state-of-theart technical theater wing is designed not only to support TNP’s high-quality performances, but also to train volunteers, students, and local educators on personal expression through theater. “We are honored to receive the support of such thoughtful and experienced arts champions,” says Bryce Alexander, CEO and Executive Artistic Director. “Rocco and Joan have a clear understanding of the unique way that TNP impacts our community, and their participation has not only pushed us to new heights but ensured that the organization is highly impactful for years to come.” The Naples Players’ current venue has served as a home for the local arts community for more than two and a half decades. While TNP programs and reach have experienced significant growth, the building and their message have remained the same: to build community through exceptional access to the power of theater. Invited by the city of Naples, FL in 1994 to build their facility on Fifth Avenue South, TNP was charged with serving as an anchor for the local community in the arts, while additionally helping to transform downtown Naples into a local and tourist destination. It clearly worked! Annually serving more than 60,000 volunteers and members, accumulating more than 65,000 volunteer hours from more than 700 volunteers, and providing arts education to more than 10,000 children and adults, TNP is looking to the future. “The Naples Players is becoming a cultural hub, leading a shift in the national perception of how theatres can influence their communities—and this building is a vital step in moving to the next level of impact,” said Peggy Monson, Board President. “Benefactors like Rocco and Joan’s support of live theatre opens the door to experience different perspectives that we may not be aware of or have contemplated.” The renovated facility, designed by David Corban Architect, PLLC, will feature a large balcony in the renovated Kizzie Theater, a new educational theater (The Glass Theater), improvements to the space and technology in the Price Theater, and a cafe for volunteers, patrons, and the public. The renovation project, led by custom commercial builder BUILD, headquartered in Naples, and financed by Lake Michigan Credit Union and FineMark Bank and Trust, is expected to be complete in the spring of 2024. The organization is hoping to raise $5 million more during that time. “The Naples Players is a rare jewel that we hope this donation will help preserve. We believe TNP will grow in popularity and will continue to have a positive economic impact on the community,” said Joan and Rocco. “Donors can also share the opportunity to impact their communities through a gift to TNP today while leaving a long-lasting legacy for tomorrow” finished Mr. Alexander. During the year-long renovation, TNP will continue performances offsite with a nine-show season. For more information, and to make a donation to The Naples Players renovation project, please visit naplesplayers.org/campaign. ABOUT THE NAPLES PLAYERS The Naples Players is a non-profit community theatre committed to the enrichment, education, and entertainment of our community through a superior theatre experience. 46 | North Naples News Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 by JEFF BOHR Naples Mac Help H A few common Mac questions answered ello again! In this article, I will be answering some common questions about Apple products and operating systems, feel free to contact me with any more questions! DO APPLE COMPUTERS (MACS) GET VIRUSES? While Apple computers, commonly known as Macs, are generally considered to be more secure than Windows-based computers, they are not immune to viruses. In the past, Macs were less targeted by malware due to their lower market share (most recently around 14% worldwide) compared to Windows PCs. However, as the popularity of Macs has increased, so has the interest of attackers in developing malware specifically targeting macOS. Mac users can still encounter various forms of malware, such as viruses, Trojans, ransomware, and adware. These malicious programs can be distributed through email attachments, software downloads from untrusted sources, compromised websites, or even fake software updates. Apple has implemented security measures in macOS, such as Gatekeeper, XProtect, and the App Sandbox, to help protect users from malware. Additionally, the App Store has strict guidelines for app submissions, reducing the risk of downloading malicious software from official sources. However, no security system is entirely foolproof, and it's important for Mac users to remain vigilant, practice safe browsing habits, keep their operating system and applications up to date, and use reputable antivirus software to minimize the risk of infection. It's worth noting that while the likelihood of encountering malware on a Mac may be relatively lower compared to Windows, the impact of a successful attack can still be significant. Therefore, maintaining good security practices is essential regardless of the platform you use. HOW DO YOU SCAN USING A MAC? Scanning with a Mac could not be easier using the built-in Preview app. To scan, place your document on the glass or feeder, and open Preview. Click on File > Import from YourPrinterName. Then, you will see a scan button in the window that appears, just click that and the file opens in Preview where you can easily share by email or text, or save the file locally on your computer. HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR MAC? The frequency of replacing a Mac computer can vary depending on several factors, including your specific needs, the performance requirements of the tasks you perform, and the longevity of the hardware. There is no fixed timeframe for replacing a Mac, as it ultimately depends on individual circumstances. However, here are some factors to consider when deciding whether to replace your Mac: • Performance: As software and applications evolve, they may require more computing power and resources. If your Mac can no longer keep up with the demands of your work or starts to feel sluggish, it may be a sign that an upgrade or replacement is necessary. • Compatibility: Newer operating systems and software updates may not be fully compatible with older Mac models. If you find that you are unable to upgrade to the latest macOS version or experience compatibility issues with essential software, it might be time to consider upgrading your Mac. Apple usually keeps their computers Vastram | shutterstock

Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 North Naples News | 47 compatible with software for 5-6 years which is above most industry leaders. • Hardware Issues: Over time, components of your Mac may start to fail or become unreliable. If you experience frequent hardware problems, such as issues with the display, battery, keyboard, or storage, it could be an indication that it's time for a replacement. • Future Needs: Consider your anticipated future needs. If you expect your computing requirements to increase significantly, such as for demanding software, video editing, or gaming, it may be wise to invest in a more powerful Mac that can handle those tasks effectively. • Longevity: Mac computers are known for their longevity, and with proper maintenance and care, they can last for several years. However, eventually, technology advances and older models may struggle to meet the demands of modern software and applications. • Budget: Affordability is an important consideration. Mac computers tend to be relatively expensive compared to some other brands. If your current Mac is still capable of performing your required tasks adequately, you may choose to hold off on replacement until it becomes necessary. Ultimately, the decision to replace your Mac should be based on a combination of factors, including performance, compatibility, hardware issues, future needs, and budget constraints. It's a good idea to regularly assess the performance of your Mac and stay informed about the latest technological advancements to make an informed decision about upgrading or replacing your computer. 48 | North Naples News Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 hile moving to a new community inevitably carries unknowns, I am more than certain about two things: the mission that attracted my family here is vitally important, and this is the most beautiful place we have ever lived – yes, even in the summer! After growing up in upstate New York and spending almost two decades working for nonprofits in Rhode Island, New Mexico, and, most recently, Knoxville, Tennessee, one common challenge I see all communities face is how to strategically use philanthropic dollars to foster cross-sector collaboration that solves problems, rather than just putting a BandAid on them. United Way of Collier County’s mission is to advance the common good by investing in the building blocks of a good quality of life: education, income, health, and safetynet services. Consider the scope of this important work: nearly 1.5 million volunteers and 6.8 million donors are engaged with United Ways across the world to advance communitybased and communityled solutions. We connect people and organizations to do more together than any of us can do on our own. Nonprofits, businesses, government, faith organizations, health providers, educators, youth, and other community leaders are among the many we are honored to call our partners. Together, we tackle tough issues to form solutions leading to real, lasting change. Our collective ability to boldly give and act has a significant positive impact on local socio-economic issues: crime, childhood poverty, high school graduation, unemployment, and a myriad of other important indicators of desirable, healthy communities. In Tennessee, I spent eight years as a founding staff member of an organization dedicated to strengthening nonprofits’ sustainability and operational effectiveness. After that organization merged with the United Way of Greater Knoxville in late 2021, I led the planning and development of a $25 million State of Tennessee grant to coordinate care for families with economic, social, and developmental vulnerabilities and elevate them beyond their circumstances to self-sufficiency. An increasing number of individuals and families in our communities work hard but are still unable to meet their basic needs, including food, childcare, housing, health care, and transportation. New United Way CEO by TIFFANI MENSCH President and CEO United Way of Collier and the Keys W shares vision for impact

Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 North Naples News | 49 People across the country are becoming more aware of this unfortunate reality thanks in large part to an acronym coined by the United Way called ALICE – Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. I am energized to build on my prior experiences and work toward innovative solutions to help our ALICE community and all our neighbors who need a hand-up from Naples to Key West. I am so honored to be given the opportunity to do this important work and I would be remiss if I did not thank the United Way of Collier and the Keys Board of Directors for their confidence in selecting me to lead this dynamic organization into the future. I’m grateful to my predecessor, Steve Sanderson, for preparing such good soil to plant the next harvest. Throughout his 12 years as CEO, Steve expanded the United Way’s impact and guided the organization through two hurricanes and a global pandemic. In 2020, he led the merger of United Way of Collier County and United Way of the Florida Keys, and we are now stronger together as one United Way of Collier and the Keys. Both areas have tourismcentered economies, both are vulnerable to hurricanes, and both have significant needs for human services that we as a United Way are perfectly positioned to address. I am eager to become fully immersed in this vibrant community and discover the diverse elements that define Collier and Monroe Counties. I am confident that together, we will create strong, healthy communities where everyone can thrive. If you would like to learn more about United Way’s work or how you can get involved, please send me an email at tiffani.mensch@ uwcollierkeys.org. Personally, I’d also love to know all your recommendations for a new Naples resident, like where to find the best ice cream or grouper sandwich! I hope to hear from you, and I look forward to meeting my new neighbors. 50 | North Naples News Aug/Sept/Oct 2023 Grant from Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation continues support for “Lunch & More” Program aker Senior Center Naples, a nonprofit organization that provides comprehensive programs and social services for seniors living in Collier and southern Lee counties, has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation to help support the senior center’s popular “Lunch & More” program. “Lunch & More” provides a weekly hot, healthy, and balanced meal followed by entertainment so adults 60 years of age and older have the opportunity to socialize, stay active, and learn. The program is one of the most popular programs to help seniors combat loneliness and isolation with more than 10,000 meals served by the center annually. With the opening of the larger Baker Senior Center building early this year, it is anticipated that number will increase by 25 percent, rising to more than 13,000 meals annually. “We are very grateful to the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation for their continued support of seniors in our community,” said Dr. Jaclynn Faffer, President/ CEO of Baker Senior Center Naples. “Our ‘Lunch & More’ program is central to our mission of providing confidence, connection, and support to seniors living in Collier and southern Lee counties. Providing a tasty, hot meal that considers the dietary needs of seniors also can help improve their overall well-being, increase mental alertness, and boost immunity.” The Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation was created in 2004 by Best Buy founder Dick Schulze to “support transformational change for the benefit of mankind.” The Foundation has consistently directed its primary efforts and resources toward matters of importance in human and social services, education, and health and medicine with a geographic emphasis on the Twin Cities area of Minnesota and Collier and Lee counties. Baker Senior Center Naples is the only human services agency of its kind, providing “one-stop shop” services addressing the emotional and social needs of seniors in Collier and southern Lee counties. Since opening its doors in 2014, the organization has seen a surge in the depth and scope of the need for comprehensive senior services in this region. All programs and services are provided by licensed and credentialed professionals. These include Structured Dementia Respite Support, Geriatric Case Management and Senior Outreach Programs, and Emotional Support Services, as well as a “choice” Food Pantry. An average of 40 different social, educational, and wellness programs also are offered each week thanks to a dedicated corps of more than 200 trained B and vetted volunteers. Among these social programs are classes in art, music, and film, brain fitness and educational seminars, courses in technology and computer science, physical well-being, and interest groups. The center serves everyone regardless of background and beliefs. Baker Senior Center Naples is one of just 111 senior centers all across the United States, including just eight located within the state of Florida, to achieve accreditation from the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC). Accreditation means that the senior center meets the standards as developed by NISC in developing quality programs and services to meet the needs of seniors in the community.
