6 | Old Naples News April 2024 BUILDING BRIGHTER FUTURES DOLLY PARTON’S IMAGINATION LIBRARY AND THE POWER OF EARLY LITERACY My dedication to early childhood literacy programs has only deepened throughout my almost twenty-year career in the nonprofit sector. Witnessing firsthand the transformative power of initiatives like Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, championed by the United Way of Collier and the Keys, has reinforced my belief in their profound impact on communities. My passion for this cause stems from personal experiences deeply rooted in the joy of reading. I recall fondly the nightly ritual of sharing stories with my hardworking single mother, who instilled in me a love for books amidst her tireless efforts to provide for our family. Our reading sessions were more than mere bedtime routines; they were precious moments of bonding, learning, and dreaming together. However, I recognize that not all families are as fortunate to have access to books and quality time for reading. Many in our community face economic challenges that hinder their ability to prioritize literacy at home, potentially depriving their children of crucial developmental opportunities. It’s a gap that can lead to educational disparities and hinder a child’s future success. Enter Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a beacon of hope for families striving to nurture a love for reading in their young ones. By delivering carefully curated books directly to children’s homes, regardless of their socioeconomic status, we strive to level the playing field and ensure every child has the chance to embark on a literary journey. Last year alone, we distributed over 32,000 books to nearly 2,700 children from birth to age five. The impact of this program speaks volumes—research consistently underscores the critical role of early literacy in shaping a child’s trajectory in life. Beyond academic success, reading fosters essential skills and cultivates a lifelong love for learning. Moreover, it serves as a catalyst for meaningful connections within families, echoing the cherished memories I hold with my own mother. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library stands as a testament to the power of a shared vision. What began as a humble endeavor in Dolly’s hometown has blossomed into a global movement, with millions of books distributed annually to children in communities across the world. Dolly’s vision of inspiring a love for reading in children everywhere has become a reality and continues to grow, fueled by a shared commitment to nurturing the next generation of readers and leaders. We are fortunate to have several nonprofits in our community that are dedicated to promoting early childhood literacy, and these programs rely heavily on community support to sustain their efforts and reach more children in need. It is important for all of us to recognize the value of these initiatives and to support them in any way we can, whether through volunteering, donating, or spreading awareness about their impact. By investing in these programs, we can help ensure that every child in our community has the opportunity to develop a love for reading and the skills they need to succeed in life. Together, we can pave the way for a brighter future where every child has the opportunity to write their own story, one page at a time. 8 | Old Naples News April 2024 THE FOLLY OF PREDICTIONS Coming into 2023, Wall Street strategists’ consensus forecast for the markets was that we were headed for a recession. In response, investors sought safety in Treasury Bills and other defensive-oriented securities. As the Federal Reserve slowly got control of inflation and interest rates stabilized, it became clear that the worst may have been behind us. From this time, the Magnificent Seven—a small group of highquality growth stocks—emerged and helped lead American stocks to new all-time highs. If you followed the consensus, you likely missed it. Yet, many still look to the same strategists for predictions as to what may happen next. SOMETIMES IT IS EASIER TO ACCEPT THE ILLUSION OF PREDICTIONS RATHER THAN THE REALITY OF UNCERTAINTY. As humans, we have an innate desire to make order out of chaos. We think the markets can be measured with precision, like an engineering or physics problem. But investing, although measured by numbers, is not Newtonian physics. And it can be tempting to internalize predictions about the future, especially when the stakes are high. We have no problem ignoring a weatherman who forecasts cloudy skies or the Las Vegas odds maker who predicts the line on a football game; except for NASA missions or high-rolling gamblers, the stakes in those predictions are relatively low. BUT WHEN IT COMES TO THE OUTCOME OF OUR INVESTMENT PORTFOLIOS, WE TEND TO GIVE MORE ATTENTION TO EXPERT PREDICTIONS BECAUSE THE STAKES ARE RELATIVELY HIGH. As we approach the presidential election in November, a natural question will surface: What will happen to the market if so-andso candidate prevails? Depending on who you are and what you believe, the answer to this question can range anywhere from euphoric to cataclysmic, with potentially farranging impacts on portfolios. I’ve seen the consequences of flawed predictions driving bad money decisions firsthand. I can also understand how scary it can be to accept how much of the world we don’t understand and how much of what happens to us – and to our portfolios – is out of our control. Nobody knows the future, and we can fool ourselves into thinking that someone knows anything about what is about to happen next, particularly in complex systems. Predictions are, by their very nature, just that. Sometimes they are right and sometimes they are wrong. AND WHILE PREDICTIONS CAN BE FASCINATING, TERRIFYING, AND EVEN ENTERTAINING, JUST DON’T LET THEM OVERLY INFLUENCE THE DECISIONS YOU MAKE WITH RESPECT TO YOUR PORTFOLIO.

14 | Old Naples News April 2024 A medical spa, also known as a medical spa or med spa, is a hybrid facility that combines the services of a day spa and a medical clinic. It offers a range of cosmetic procedures and medical treatments to enhance beauty, promote wellness, and provide medical expertise. When choosing a med spa, it is essential to consider several factors to ensure you receive the best possible care and achieve your desired results. CERTIFICATION AND CREDENTIALS One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a med spa is the qualifications and certifications of the staff members. Look for med spas that employ licensed medical professionals, such as dermatologists, plastic surgeons, or registered nurses, who have extensive experience and expertise in performing cosmetic procedures. These professionals can provide safe and effective treatments while minimizing the risks associated with aesthetic treatments. FACILITY AND EQUIPMENT The cleanliness and state of the med spa facility are important factors to keep in mind. Look for med spas that have wellmaintained, modern facilities equipped with state-of-theart equipment. This indicates the med spa’s commitment to providing high-quality services and ensuring the safety of its clients. Additionally, inquire about the sterilization and sanitation practices followed to prevent infections and maintain the highest standards of cleanliness. TREATMENT OPTIONS A med spa should offer a wide range of treatment options to cater to different needs and desires. Look for med spas that specialize in specific treatments, such as Botox® injections, dermal fillers, laser hair removal, or body contouring. Additionally, inquire about the med spa’s commitment to ongoing education and staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in cosmetic medical procedures. This demonstrates their willingness to provide the latest and most effective treatments to their clients. CONSULTATION AND CONSULTATION FEE Before scheduling any procedures, it is important to schedule a consultation with a qualified medical professional at the med spa. This consultation provides an opportunity to discuss your goals and concerns, evaluate the treatment options, and address any potential risks or complications associated with the treatment. Many med spas offer consultations free of charge, while some may charge a fee. However, it is important to consider the value and importance of a thorough consultation when making your decision. FOLLOW-UP CARE AND SUPPORT When choosing a med spa, it is important to consider their level of support and aftercare. Look for med spas that offer a post-treatment care plan, which may include follow-up appointments, consultations, and any necessary touch-ups. Additionally, inquire about the med spa’s commitment to patient satisfaction and their willingness to address any concerns or questions that may arise after the procedure. For those who are concerned about appearances year-round, Naples offers some of the best med spas in the area. Choosing the right med spa is an investment in your health and wellbeing. By considering factors such as certification, facility and equipment, treatment options, consultation, customer reviews, and follow-up care, you can make an informed decision and choose the perfect med spa for your needs. 22 | Old Naples News April 2024 EXPLORING THE DEPTHS OF DARK SPOTS Med SpasThe Wonders of Wellness Hyperpigmentation, or dark spots, is a common skin condition that affects many people. These dark spots can occur due to various factors, including sun damage, inflammation, and hormonal changes. While dark spots can be unsightly, there are options available to treat them effectively. UNDERSTANDING DARK SPOTS Dark spots are areas of darker pigmentation on the skin that are caused by the accumulation of excess melanin. Melanin is a pigment that determines the color of our skin. When there is an overproduction of melanin in certain areas of the skin, dark spots can develop. CAUSES OF DARK SPOTS There are several factors that contribute to the formation of dark spots on the skin: 1. Sun Exposure: Prolonged exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can cause dark spots. The UV rays stimulate the production of melanin, resulting in the appearance of dark spots. 2. Inflammation: Certain skin conditions, such as acne, can leave behind dark spots once the inflammation has subsided. The inflammation stimulates the production of melanin, leading to the formation of dark spots. 3. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, such as those associated with pregnancy, birth control pills, or menopause, can also contribute to the development of dark spots. The hormonal changes can cause an increase in the production of melanin, leading to the formation of dark spots. 4. Skin Trauma: Scarring from injuries or burns can lead to the development of dark spots. The skin’s healing process may result in the formation of excess melanin, resulting in dark spots. TREATMENT OPTIONS Fortunately, there are various treatment options available for dark spots, including: 1. Hydroquinone: This ingredient is a popular treatment option for dark spots. It helps to lighten the pigmented areas by inhibiting the production of melanin. Hydroquinone is typically found in over-the-counter products, as well as in higher concentrations in prescription creams or treatments. 2. Vitamin C Serum: Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can help brighten and even out the skin tone. It promotes the production of collagen, which helps to fade dark spots and improve the overall texture of the skin. Vitamin C serum can be applied directly to the skin or used as a component of a skincare routine. 3. Peptide-Based Products: Peptides are chains of amino acids that can help stimulate collagen production. Products containing peptides can help to improve the appearance of dark spots by promoting cell turnover and reducing hyperpigmentation. 4. Laser and Light Therapy: Laser and light therapy can be used to treat dark spots effectively. These treatments target the dark areas of the skin, breaking down the melanin and causing it to fade over time. It is often recommended to combine laser therapy with other treatments such as creams or peels for optimal results. 5. Med Spas: Med spas offer a range of treatment options for dark spots, including chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and facials. These treatments can help to exfoliate the skin, removing the top layer of dead skin cells, and stimulating collagen production, resulting in improved skin tone, and reduced dark spots. Dark spots can be an unsightly skin condition that affects many people. By understanding the causes of dark spots and exploring the available treatment options, individuals can find ways to improve the appearance of their skin. Whether it’s using over-the-counter products or seeking professional help at a med spa, it is possible to achieve brighter and smoother skin. So, if you’re struggling with dark spots, why not explore the options available and take the first step towards a more even skin tone?

24 | Old Naples News April 2024 CHAD OLIVER Chief Communication Officer Collier County Public Schools Most people do not enter the jail with a smile. Hunter Sayers does it every day. He clears the security checkpoints and steps into an elevator leading to a classroom full of desks and posters teaching leadership skills. The most prominent feature is a “legacy” wall honoring inmates who have earned their equivalency diploma, a circuitous route to completing high school requirements made possible through the work of educators like Hunter. He works for Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) within Adult and Community Education, where he preps students for the GED, teaches English, and helps them re-enter the workforce. Superintendent Dr. Leslie Ricciardelli and other district leaders visited Hunter inside the Collier County Sheriff ’s Office Naples Jail Center to tell him he had been chosen as the Post-Secondary Teacher of the Year. I asked Hunter a simple question. Why do you do what you do? “I always had a heart for helping people. I see people who are here in jail, many of them are extremely intelligent, for whatever reason they might not have been able to finish school or maybe they come from another country and don’t have an educational background,” explained Hunter. I heard variations of that response along our stops to honor the 2024 CCPS Employees of the Year. The Middle School Teacher of the Year is Gulfview Middle science teacher Samantha Wilson. Her mother, who teaches next door, and father joined for the surprise announcement. “I was lucky enough to have two parents who were educators,” Samantha explained. “I got to see it as a kid going through Collier County Public Schools. I love this community... born and raised in it. My “why” is seeing [students’] faces when it clicks and they make a connection.” Andrea Polanco teaches civics at Oakridge Middle and is our nominee for Florida Teacher of the Year. “My why is them,” explained Andrea. “[Students] need people who are passionate about education. The more passionate you are in the classroom, the more learning they are going to do. We work as a team.” Talk about a team. This year, the Elementary Teacher of the Year went to co-teachers who often finish each other’s sentences. Janelle Matos and Joanna Campanile have been team-teaching for the last decade in a combined classroom at Vineyards Elementary. “I do it because I love to see the lightbulb go off,” said Joanna. “I love when we’re teaching them to read or taking them in the garden and giving them all those experiences that may be their first time ever.” Standing next to her, Janelle explained her “why.” “I do it for that ‘aha’ moment when [the answer] comes to them, and they know that learning is fun and forever.” Samantha Wilson with her parents at Gulfview Middle School Andrea Polanco with husband and son at Oakridge Middle Collier SchoolsEmployees of the Year THE “WHY” Hunter Sayers, CCPS Post-Secondary Teacher of the Year FOR CCPS EMPLOYEES OF THE YEAR

26 | Old Naples News April 2024 After 34 years in CCPS, Gulf Coast High science teacher Lisa Townsend is the High School Teacher of the Year. “My why is some great teachers I had in school. I wanted a career where I could teach and coach. I was a girls’ basketball coach for many years. So, it fit. I really did truly feel a calling,” Lisa added. “When I was a young girl, living in Michigan, I started a folder that said Naples, Florida. I had a goal to teach here. We used to vacation here as a family, so I was driven. It was the right decision.” Pre-K assistant Sandy Rayburn at Village Oaks Elementary in Immokalee is our Collier County Nominee for School-Related Employee of the Year. “I love being with [children] and nurturing them,” Sandy explained. “I want them to enjoy their life outside of their home and have a good time learning and feeling confident in themselves.” Back at the jail, Hunter shared an example of the trust he builds with inmates waiting for the next steps in the judicial process. He sometimes walks over to their cells and wakes them up so that they don’t miss his class. These are crucial steps toward lending a hand to these community members rather than writing them off. “To be able to help those guys, and then we see many of them on the streets outside, and they get jobs,” Hunter added. “They’re successful, they go to college, and we’ve lifted them up to live a successful and fulfilling life.” Collier SchoolsEmployees of the Year Janelle Matos and Joanna Campanile , Elementary Teachers of the Year Gulf Coast High School Science Teacher Lisa Townsend , CCPS High School Teacher of the Year

One of the rewarding aspects of being a holistic medical doctor is that you get to learn about the medicinal benefits of various foods and how to use them in your practice. Today I will highlight some of these important functional foods. Take a look at the cantaloupe for example. One cup of cantaloupe provides 110% of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene. This cleansing antioxidant combines with the melon’s high water content to help speed the elimination of fat-trapping toxins from the body. So, if I have a patient who is trying to optimize his or her weight and is asking for a nutritious breakfast, I recommend combining one small slice of cantaloupe with either a small cup of plain low-fat organic yogurt, or a small serving of low-fat organic cottage cheese, or just about any other non-processed source of protein you like. As you face Florida’s heat, adding a cantaloupe to anything you eat will make you feel brighter, cooler, and more hydrated. LET FOOD BE THY HEALER The author of Diet Slave No More!, Svetlana Kogan, MD is a Board-Certified Internal Medicine, Holistic & Functional Medical Doctor with 25 years of experience. CustomLongevity.com | 239.676.6883 Another great fruit to use abundantly in your Naples home is watermelon. Packed with skin-nourishing antioxidants, like vitamins A, C, and lycopene – watermelon can help strengthen the skin’s sun defense network by preventing free radical damage that can cause wrinkles and sunspots. In fact, you probably noticed how so many skin care companies are adding watermelon lately as an ingredient in creams and moisturizers. In the kitchen, combining one small slice of cool watermelon with any healthy source of unprocessed protein like a scoop of avocado or a low-fat organic mozzarella stick, will make a great nutritious snack and keep your complexion hydrated and radiant. A lesser-known fruit chock-full of nutrients is kiwi. The vitamin C and polyphenols in kiwi can reduce levels of triglycerides by up to 15%. A perfect breakfast or a snack for someone trying to mend their metabolic syndrome naturally is to blend one small cup of organic non-fat kefir or plain yogurt, one kiwi fruit cleaned and diced, and one teaspoon of chopped fresh mint for a delicious smoothie. You have probably noticed that I often recommend non-fat or low-fat yogurt or kefir as a medium for many fruit snacks. These two happen to be in the top ten calcium-rich foods out there. Calcium DR. KOGAN Concierge Holistic & Functional Internal Medicine can reduce dietary fat absorption by a whopping 250%. Calcium also suppresses the release of hormones that slow down the metabolism. In addition, kefir and yogurt’s natural combo of calcium with vitamin D improves our sensitivity to insulin. Some people shun dairy for allergic reasons, whether it may be an asthma connection or gut sensitivity. However, I would like to set the record straight for kefir and yogurt. Both are cultured, fermented foods. The live bacteria in both produce their own lactase, which means that even if you are lactoseintolerant, you can still enjoy them. Kefir and yogurt are also loaded with vitamin B12, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin D, organic acids, and over 60 different strains of live bacteria making them a very rich source of probiotics for the gut. However, if you have absolutely no tolerance for these products, you can easily substitute them with almond or cashew milk. When it comes to healthy eating, my philosophy has always been to stay away from 90% of what is sold in the supermarket. Instead, go for fresh fruits and vegetables, and a healthy and organic source of dairy and poultry. Smaller wild fish are a bonus, as are lentils and legumes. Food is much more exciting and safer than medications and should be engaged as a healing modality as much as possible.

34 | Old Naples News April 2024 THE ART OF MAKING A SMALL BATHROOM FEEL LARGER ALEXANDRA JANZ Broker Associate & Luxury Properties Specialist William Raveis-Florida, LLC 239.315.1079 | ajnaplesrealty.com If you’re planning to put your home on the market, and you’ve got a bathroom that’s on the smaller side, there are inexpensive ways to help make it appear larger without having to move a wall or change its footprint. Consider these tips and tricks to make your small bathroom appear larger to better compete with other homes for sale in Naples. #1: TILE THE SHOWER TO THE CEILING The key to this trick is to draw the eye higher upward toward the ceiling. When you tile your shower walls to meet the ceiling it makes the walls appear taller, which enhances the visual volume of your bathroom. So, go the extra mile with a little extra tile! Along with tiling to the ceiling, consider installing a shower door—if you currently use a shower curtain. A drawn shower curtain visually cuts the shower off from the rest of the bathroom, which can make it appear smaller. Or you can simply leave the curtain open during open houses. But buyers will no doubt appreciate your upgrade from a curtain to a shower door! #2: PAINT USING LIGHT COLORS AND A FLAT FINISH This tip shouldn’t be a surprise. It’s the easiest and oldest trick in the book. Dark colors visually shrink spaces by making walls appear to draw inward. So, paint with light colors to keep your bath looking airy and bright. The finish of the paint you use matters, too. Opt for a flat, or matte, finish because it has a chalky appearance, which can de-emphasize surface imperfections on your walls and make the walls stand out less overall. Flats are also best for ceilings that have irregularities, and for hiding lap marks when you paint. #3: MAXIMIZE THE USE OF MIRRORS Having friends in high places can be a great thing, but having mirrors in small spaces can be even better! Mirrors can make the walls they cover virtually disappear due to their reflective nature. If you hang two wide mirrors above a double vanity or install one continuous mirror over a single or double vanity, you will open up the look of your small bath. #4: LAY FLOOR TILE ON A DIAGONAL, OR USE LARGE TILE You can visually enhance the size of the footprint of your small bath. Laying floor tile at a 45-degree angle can stretch the eye and give the appearance of a larger floor space. The first tile should be positioned in a corner of the room where the walls form a 90-degree angle. Another way to give your bath the appearance of a larger footprint is by installing large tiles—tiles that are bigger than the common 1-foot by 1-foot size.

36 | Old Naples News April 2024 BOOK REVIEW reviewed by anna karras erd Nite was founded in 2003 and has had two dueling taglines: “Be there and be square,” and, “It’s like the Discovery Channel, with beer.” Always in a setting that serves alcohol, it presents a series of mini-lectures on all things nerdy: math, biology, technology, and all sorts of subjects that make “nerds” get all excited. Now hosted in over 200 locations worldwide from Tokyo to London to Omaha, Nebraska, the lectures of Nerd Nite are most often presented by fledging researchers, grad school students, and young professionals in their 20s and 30s. Attendees sip cocktails and listen as they are entertained by an assemblage of factbased anecdotes. This print collection stems from the desire to showcase the editors’ favorite stories. It collects 70 such gems that range in subject from the science of a hangover to a certain spider’s use of a catapult during sex, to everything in between from toilets on space stations to Navytrained dolphins and sea lions. Often slightly rude, but endlessly fascinating, these stories will keep you in your chair, sipping your beer and wondering what on earth is cued up next. For instance, did you know that smaller male cuttlefish use subversive tactics to find a mating partner? By disguising themselves as female they can sidle up to a prospective mate without competing with larger males. And on a completely different subject, it might not just be you who finds your partner’s breathing too annoying to be tolerated, you might have a very real condition called misophonia. Divided into headings like “Mmm… Brains,” “Pathogens and Parasites,” and “Math is Fun,” these bite-sized stories are perfect for dipping in a toe or sitting down to consume the entire book in one gulp. Always interesting and always backed up with data, How to Win Friends and Influence Fungi will keep you coming back for another dose of trivia that will make any nerd’s heart happy. And probably really good at Jeopardy! 40 | Old Naples News April 2024 HOW DO ELECTION YEARS AFFECT THE MARKETS? As the 2024 U.S. presidential election approaches, many investors are anxious about the impact politics might have on their portfolios. While this concern is primarily driven by the uncertainty a typical election year brings, a review of past cycles suggests that the upcoming presidential election shouldn’t be a cause for concern. To better understand the typical market dynamics during election years, we analyzed the returns of U.S. stocks over the last 60 years and compared those results to the returns generated during presidential election years and the year immediately following election years. Since 1960, the S&P 500 has averaged an annualized price return of roughly 8.2%. Returns during a U.S. presidential election year were slightly below average, coming in at 7.3% per year. However, returns generated the year after a U.S. presidential election were significantly above average, at 10.2% annually. We also reviewed the returns during calendar years when a Republican or Democrat was voted into the White House, though it’s worth noting that there’s a limited sample size (i.e., 16 U.S. presidential elections since 1960, with an even split between appointed Republicans and Democrats). If a Republican was elected, returns were roughly 9% per year during the election year (higher than the average annual return since 1960). In contrast, if a Democrat was elected, returns were below average at 5.6% per year during the election year. Meanwhile, the opposite was true during the calendar year following an election. If a Republican was elected, returns only averaged 3.1% per year, while if a Democrat was elected, returns averaged a whopping 17.3% per year in the year following a U.S. presidential election. There are of course many factors that impact performance in a given year, and macroeconomic trends such as growth, inflation, and the level of interest rates tend to demonstrate a stronger relationship with asset returns than the discrete results of a specific election. For example, during the 1980 election year, the S&P 500 rallied approximately 26% as the newly elected Chairman of the Federal Reserve (“the Fed”), Paul Volcker, was able to begin reigning in stubbornly high inflation that began manifesting in the late 1970s. Conversely, the S&P 500 was down 38.5% during the 2008 election cycle, driven by the burgeoning global financial crisis and the damage it inflicted on the economy and markets. In both cases, markets reverted the following year as the S&P 500 declined roughly 10% in 1981 as inflation resurfaced, and rallied 23.5% in 2009 as the Fed embarked on quantitative easing. Therefore, it’s important to understand the economic and market backdrop leading into an election year, and how that backdrop evolves: Is the economy on solid footing? Are interest rates accommodative or restrictive? Are asset prices over or under-valued? Are corporate profits sustainable? And so forth. As you will see from our 2024 market outlook, we’re cautiously optimistic regarding the U.S. economic backdrop heading into the new year. However, the market is starting to become expensive at the index level, as MITCHELL DARIO, CFA Senior Portfolio Manager the S&P 500 will likely end 2023 up over 20%. Still, many pockets of the market failed to participate in last year’s rally, and several attractively priced companies with longterm return potential remain. High-quality U.S. government and corporate bonds are another important portfolio diversifier, especially as the Fed pivots towards easing policy. Despite the near-term uncertainty an election year typically brings, we believe a diversified portfolio of high-quality growth and dividend-paying stocks, combined with appropriate amounts of short-tointermediate term bonds and cash, will help our clients meet their financial goals. LORNA FEDELEM, MD INCONTINENCE Call and schedule a complimentary meet and greet with Dr. Fedelem. 9150 Galleria Ct., Suite 200, Naples, FL 34109 | LornaFedelemMD.com | 239.580.6390 Incontinence. Nobody wants to admit it, but it happens. There is a good chance that at some point, once over the age of 20, more commonly women (62%), but also men (15%), will experience some form of incontinence. WHAT IS INCONTINENCE? Urinary incontinence is leaking of urine that you can’t control. Many Americans suffer from urinary incontinence. We don’t know for sure exactly how many because people do not tell anyone about their symptoms. They may be embarrassed, or they may think nothing can be done, so they suffer in silence. Urinary incontinence is not just a medical problem. It can affect emotional, psychological, and social life. Many people who have urinary incontinence are afraid to do normal daily activities because they don’t want to be too far from the bathroom. Urinary incontinence can keep people from enjoying life. Many people think urinary incontinence is just part of getting older. That’s not always the case! The good news is that it can be managed and/or treated. Don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor to find out what treatment is best for you. WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF URINARY INCONTINENCE? Urinary incontinence is not a disease. It is a symptom of many conditions. Causes may differ for men and women. These are the three most common types of urinary incontinence: 1. Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) With SUI, weak pelvic muscles let urine escape. It is the most common type of urinary incontinence, more so for women, and less for men. SUI happens when the pelvic floor muscles have stretched and weakened. Physical activity puts pressure on the bladder, and then the bladder leaks. Leaking may happen with exercise, walking, bending, lifting, or even sneezing and coughing. It can be a few drops of urine to a tablespoon or more. There are no FDA-approved medications to treat SUI, but there are things you can do to improve your symptoms. Remedies to manage SUI include strengthening the pelvic floor, lifestyle changes, vaginal and urethral devices, pads, and even surgery. 2. Urge Incontinence or Overactive Bladder (OAB) Overactive bladder affects more than 30% of men and 40% of women in the U.S. It affects people’s lives and may restrict people from certain activities. People may fear they will suddenly have the urge to urinate when they aren’t near a bathroom. Some may not even be able to get a good night’s sleep. The main symptom of OAB is the sudden urge to urinate. You can’t control or ignore this “gotta go” feeling. Another symptom is having to urinate many times during the day and night. OAB is more likely in men with prostate problems and in women after menopause. Treatments can include lifestyle changes, drugs that relax the bladder muscle, or surgery. 3. Mixed incontinence Many people have both SUI and OAB and this is known as mixed incontinence. The good news is that there are ways to treat incontinence, and nobody must suffer in silence. I have an Emsella chair in my office and have used this with amazing success for over two years. It is a revolutionary, non-invasive treatment that strengthens the pelvic floor by using electromagnetic energy. The chair can stimulate 12,000 pelvic floor contractions (Kegel exercises) in 28 minutes! Both women and men can benefit who have SUI, OAB, and mixed incontinence. I have seen this device change peoples’ lives! There are also medications and procedures for the right patient. The bottom line is don’t be afraid to talk to your primary care provider! You are not alone!

Ehnes and Spano showcase their versatility on April 7 as they join several musicians of the Naples Philharmonic in Daniels Pavilion for a Wang Chamber Music program featuring Brahms’ Violin Sonata No. 3 and Dvořák’s Third String Quintet. Later in the month, the Naples Philharmonic is joined by soprano Georgia Jarman, baritone Hugh Russell, the Naples Philharmonic Chorus, and the FGCU University Choir for a celebration of Czech classical music under the baton of respected Czech conductor Tomáš Netopil on April 18 and 20. Rounding out the month, the orchestra joins Gulfshore Opera for a special presentation of Puccini’s Turandot, in celebration of the opera company’s 10th anniversary, on April 27. Patrons who love to move and groove can enjoy not one, but two of the Naples Philharmonic Jazz Orchestra’s popular All That Jazz concerts in Daniels Pavilion, featuring the crystalline trumpet of Eddie Henderson on April 3 and the impeccable vocals of singer Carla Cook on April 24. Other highlights in Daniels Pavilion include the premier Huey Lewis and the News tribute band, Power of Love, on April 5 and U.K. swing band (first discovered on Britain’s Got Talent) The Jive Aces on April 27. In Hayes Hall, the Artis—Naples Broadway series reaches its culmination on April 9-14 with Academy Award winner Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterwork, To Kill a Mockingbird, starring Emmy-winning actor Richard Thomas in the role of Atticus Finch. Returning to Naples for an evening in recital on April 23, piano superstar Lang Lang performs works by Schubert, Schumann, and Chopin and beyond, continuing in his role as a global ambassador of classical music. And finally, April ends with a bang as rock legends George Thorogood and The Destroyers light up Hayes Hall with their timeless hits, including Bad to the Bone, Move It On Over, I Drink Alone, and many more. 48 | Old Naples News April 2024 JEFF BOHR Naples Mac Help Jeff is your one stop Mac expert, an • Certified Support Professional, and 37-year Mac user. He can be reached at [email protected] or 239.595.0482 APPLECARE AppleCare is a line of extended warranty and technical support plans offered by Apple Inc. for its hardware products. These plans provide additional coverage beyond the standard one-year limited warranty and up to 90 days of complimentary support that comes with most Apple products. AppleCare plans, including AppleCare+ and AppleCare Protection Plan, offer a range of benefits to Apple product users. Here’s an explanation of the various benefits of AppleCare: ENHANCED TECHNICAL SUPPORT One of the primary benefits of AppleCare is the access it provides to Apple’s awardwinning technical support. Users can receive direct support from Apple experts via chat or phone, which significantly simplifies the process of troubleshooting issues with Apple products. This extended technical support can be invaluable for users who rely heavily on their devices for personal or professional use and require immediate assistance to resolve technical problems. EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERAGE AppleCare extends the hardware warranty coverage of Apple products, which includes protection against manufacturing defects and, in some cases, battery service coverage. This extended warranty can provide peace of mind to users by ensuring that if their device encounters hardware issues, they can have it repaired or replaced by Apple. This coverage significantly reduces the potential costs associated with hardware repairs or replacements, which can be considerable, especially for high-value items like Mac computers and iPhones. ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE PROTECTION AppleCare+ plans offer additional benefits, including coverage for accidental damage. This means that if a user accidentally drops their iPhone, iPad, or Mac, or if it sustains water damage, they can have their device repaired for a nominal service fee. This aspect of AppleCare+ is particularly beneficial, as it addresses the reality that accidents happen, providing a cost-effective solution for repairs that would otherwise be much more expensive. SOFTWARE SUPPORT Beyond hardware, AppleCare also covers software support, helping users with the operation of the macOS, iOS, and other Apple software, including how to integrate Apple devices into existing networks and systems. This support can be especially useful for users who are less familiar with Apple’s products or those who need assistance with more complex software issues. VALUE ADDITION While AppleCare plans come with an additional cost, they can offer significant savings in the long run, especially for users who are prone to accidents or who rely heavily on their Apple devices. The cost of a single out-of-warranty repair can often exceed the price of purchasing AppleCare+, making it a wise investment for many users. Furthermore, AppleCare+ enhances the resale value of Apple products, as the coverage is transferable to new owners. PEACE OF MIND Perhaps the most intangible yet valuable benefit of AppleCare is the peace of mind it offers. Knowing that one’s investment in Apple products is protected against both technical and accidental issues can relieve the stress and anxiety associated with potential device problems. This peace of mind is particularly important for professionals and businesses that depend on Apple devices for their daily operations. AppleCare provides a comprehensive support and warranty plan that extends beyond the standard coverage offered with Apple products. It’s benefits, including enhanced technical support, extended warranty coverage, accidental damage protection, software support, potential savings, and peace of mind, make it an attractive option for many Apple users. Whether for personal use or professional reliance, AppleCare offers a level of security and support that can greatly enhance the Apple product experience.
