That’s a lot, and I hope you hung in with me through it all.
Because though most of these improvements are years in the www.eastwestfineart.com
future—more than a decade for some—there were two other [email protected]
recommendations that we can begin right away.
MERCATO
The first is a strategy to manage our existing infrastructure
to its fullest. We’ll use what is currently dedicated right-turn 9115 Strada Pl, #5130
lanes and shoulders to essentially create a fourth through lane Naples, FL 34108
heading west for the length of this segment. It will require re-
striping, moving light and signal poles, and a bit of new asphalt. North Naples News | 9
Staff has already identified the segment from Valewood to I-75
as the easiest place to begin, and we’ll see that project in the
budget for the next fiscal year.
But perhaps the most exciting is the plan to introduce
adaptive traffic signalization for the seven lights in this
segment. This will increase safety, improve travel efficiency,
and cut down on red-light delays, which saves time and fuel
and reduces emissions.
New equipment will monitor traffic volume and create
real-time data. Sophisticated programming will determine the
best, most logical, and most efficient action, giving green lights
precisely where they’re needed the most, for precisely the time
they are necessary, then quickly moving on to the area of next-
highest demand.
We are already installing the detection system along the
segment. When that is complete, we will collect traffic counts
to configure the system. Then county staff will test and finalize
the system; we should be operational by early summer. When
this technology was installed on South Airport Road in 2017,
it resulted in a 15-24% improvement in travel time. We are
hopeful it will have a similar effect here, so next season should
be a little easier for us all on Immokalee Road.
My office has prepared a link to more in-depth information
about diverging diamond and continuous flow intersections, and
to a slide presentation on these recommended changes. Send an
email to Angela @ CollierCountyFL.gov if you’re interested and

LONGER, BETTER LIFE Okinawa, Japan, Loma Linda, California, Nicoya, Costa Rica, and Ikaria,
Greece. Each of these populations had a story to tell about the lifestyles
by Dan Buettner of people who lived a rich life to a ripe old age.
National Geographic With a team of scientists and the backing of National Geographic, Buettner
240 Pages was able to pinpoint nine areas of lifestyle these disparate populations shared.
$19.99 US His first book, The Blue Zones: 9 Lessons for Living Longer was published in 2008.
In 2016 Collier County, led by Naples Community Hospital (NCH),
spearheaded their own Blue Zones initiative. Partnering with grocery stores,
schools, restaurants, and many other organizations, they strove to spread the
message about a way to live longer and live better.
Now you have a personal challenge: Buettner’s new book lays out a four-week plan to help you
make small changes to your lifestyle that could add years to your life. And it isn’t all about diet
and exercise. In fact, some of them, like putting family first, hanging out with friends, and having
a glass of wine every evening sound downright pleasant. That’s the point—it’s supposed to be. Yes,
he asks you to eat a more plant-based diet and take the stairs instead of the elevator, but this is a
whole-life approach, not just what you are eating.
The Okinawans have ikigai. The Nicoya Costa Ricans have a plan de vida. They both mean
roughly the same thing: a life’s purpose, or a reason to get out of bed in the morning. Having one
makes a big difference in a person’s outlook. Stressed out? The Greeks from Ikaria take a nap.
Want to connect with family? The Seventh Day Adventists of Loma Linda, California spend every
Saturday (their Sabbath) with family: no screens, no chores, no homework. And the Sardinians
have a happy hour where they drink good red wine and laugh with their friends.
According to this book, Collier County, which went from seventy-third in the country in well-
being, shot to number one and has stayed there for four years in a row. Heart disease deaths have
dropped by eight percent and remain the lowest in the state of Florida.
Buettner suggests finding a Blue Zones buddy. In a community already deeply involved
with the movement, it shouldn’t be too hard. Check out swfl.bluezonesproject.com for more
information, including how you can participate in the community movement, volunteer your
time, or just make plans to have a glass of wine with friends on the lanai every week. I’ll bring a
Sardinian red and meet you there.

MIAMI ART WEEK 2021
Story and Photography
BY LEEZA ARKHANGELSKAYA
Owner of East West Fine Art
M iami Art week was
finally back and
brought so much
fun! Art Basel Miami
Beach was grander than ever with 260
world’s best contemporary art galleries
participating. Satellite fairs with over
300 art galleries from all over the world
were true rivals to the major event.
November 29 - December 5,
2021, formal and informal openings,
champagne receptions, and private
parties manifested that the contemporary art scene has
survived the pandemic and continues to flourish.
To me, as an art dealer and art gallery owner, it’s always
interesting to visit international art fairs and to feel the direction
in which contemporary art is developing. I have observed that
most artists are employing new media as a novel way to express
their artistic message. Using unconventional and non-glamorous
media, artists are breaking the barriers to art connoisseurship,
inviting wider audiences to appreciate art, striking them with the
element of surprise and good humor.
New media often evokes emotions very different from
traditional paintings and sculptures. Tapestries made of old
worn-out clothing invite you to explore the threads and tussles,
check the content of the pockets; candy-colored sculptures
made of felt tempt you to give them a big hug; an intricate
oriental rug made of woven plastic paste inevitably urges you to
poke it with your finger (I did when nobody was looking).
The old classic painting style known as “Trompe L’oeil” (trick
the eye) got totally new interpretation in various installations
using holograms, mirrors, and all sorts of high-tech shimmering,
flickering, vanishing imaging. The effect goes far beyond
tricking the eye—some impressionable art lovers experience
temporary mental confusion and nausea.
Please enjoy photos I made featuring art pieces that I find
interesting. If you didn’t visit this mega art event last December,
I would highly recommend not to miss it this year. And invite
your friends. You’ll be out for a good time, I guarantee it!
