8 | North Naples News January 2026PUBLIC EDUCATIONPOWERING OUR FUTURE IN 2026CHAD OLIVER Chief Communication OfficerCollier County Public SchoolsCollier County Public Schools (CCPS) is shaping future leaders and workforce development in Southwest Florida. From career-ready programs to modern facilities, these initiatives reflect a shared commitment to preparing students while supporting our region’s economic growth.NEW COURSE OFFERINGS AND CAREER TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES CCPS is widening career exploration and helping prepare students to meet local workforce needs. CCPS is now offering a dual enrollment opportunity for the growing sector of medical devices. In partnership with Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) and Arthrex, CCPS is offering a Medical Device Industry course on the campus of Aubrey Rogers High School. Similar to the Aviation Academy at Lely High School, this program is open to all CCPS high school students. Building on the success of this innovative course, CCPS anticipates growing interest in 2026 from students across the district. CCPS has been working to expand Career Dual Enrollment (CDE) options to all our high school students. This allows students to remain enrolled at their home high school and spend part of the day training at one of the technical college campuses operated by CCPS. The following are the projected career dual enrollment numbers for School Year 2026-27: • 300 spots for Lorenzo Walker Technical High School (LWTH) students to attend Lorenzo Walker Technical College (LWTC) • 165 spots for students in the remaining Naples-area high schools to attend LWTC • 300 spots for students to attend Immokalee Technical College (iTECH) • CCPS also plans to launch a new avionics program at LWTC that will accept career dual-enrollment students FACILITIES EXPANSION AND IMPROVEMENTS The District School Board of Collier County is building a state-of-the-art elementary school in the master-planned community of Ave Maria. Scheduled to open in August 2026, Ave Maria Elementary, led by Principal Bev Budzynski, will proudly welcome students as the home of the Cardinals. This will be the 33rd elementary school operated by CCPS, and construction is being funded without incurring additional debt, thanks in large part to the district’s foresight in acquiring the property back in 2008. Additionally, it is designed and built to serve the community as a storm shelter. Ave Maria Elementary is being built to serve 900 students, and we anticipate building a future middle school on the 46-acre site. Speaking of facilities, CCPS is in the process of converting all high school baseball and softball fields to synthetic turf, and the work should be completed in the next two years. The benefits of synthetic turf include durability and consistent play, weather resistance, lower maintenance, cost efficiency over the lifecycle, a safer surface for students, extended usability, and aesthetic appeal. Another new project on the horizon is a CCPS Transportation Facility in Golden Gate Estates to accommodate growth in that part of Collier County. The transportation compound will be located at the corner of Immokalee Road and 47 Avenue Northeast. A-RATING FOR ACCOUNTABILITY Student assessments in the late spring will determine school and district grades. Collier County Public Schools is the only school district in southwest Florida to earn an “A” rating this past school year and will be aiming to continue the A-rated streak that began in 2017. Look ahead to the summer of 2026 for the updated school and district grades. Florida’s Department of Education uses a universal accountability model to evaluate all public schools and districts. This model is grounded in state law and applies the same standards across the state, from small rural districts to large urban ones. That grade is based on a comprehensive formula that includes up to 12 components measuring student achievement, learning gains, graduation rates, and acceleration, which includes college and career readiness.Every new course, every upgraded facility, and every earned ‘A’ grade reflects a simple truth: public education is the foundation of opportunity. Together, we are building a future where every student can thrive.Automotive Program at Lorenzo Walker Nursing Program at Lorenzo Walker Technical CollegeTechnical College

NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONSLORNA FEDELEM, MDCall and schedule a complimentary meet and greet with Dr. Fedelem. 9150 Galleria Ct., Suite 200, Naples, FL 34109LornaFedelemMD.com | 239.580.6390A SUSTAINABLE APPROACHDo you treat the New Year like a personal health seminar, a moment to reassess your habits and redesign the “new you?” I used to do exactly that—scribbling down grand plans for self-improvement and imagining how much better I’d feel once I transformed everything at once. My list included exercising daily, losing weight, cutting back on eating out, reading more, and swearing off sugar. I loved the idea of a perfected version of myself, yet most years I barely made it past week two. I later learned I wasn’t alone: Forbes reports that only about 8% of people achieve their New Year’s resolutions. Alas, I was among the 92%!Instead of tackling huge, overwhelming resolutions, consider a gentler, more sustainable approach. Below are fifteen wellness tips to help you jump-start your health goals for the New Year and beyond.1. Set an attainable goal and create a simple plan.Lofty, drastic goals often guarantee frustration. Choose something realistic and break it into small, manageable steps. Consistency, not intensity, leads to longterm success.CLEAN EATING2. Add more fruits and vegetables to each meal.A colorful, plant-forward diet is linked to longevity and disease prevention. The more vibrant your plate, the better your body functions.3. Keep healthy snacks within reach. If wholesome options are available, you’re far less tempted by sugary or salty alternatives. Avoid buying unhealthy snacks altogether so you won’t have to battle willpower later.4. Aim for 60 ounces of water a day.Hydration boosts energy, flushes toxins, improves skin, and supports immunity. If plain water isn’t appealing, try infusions or herbal teas.5. Start your morning with a warm, hydrating drink.Warm water with lemon is soothing and helps alkalinize the body. Coffee is fine too—just avoid turning it into a sugar-loaded dessert. Gradually reduce sweeteners and allow your taste buds to adjust.NON-TOXIC LIVING6. Reevaluate your beauty products and switch to cleaner options as you run out.Look for skincare that supports healthy aging and ingredients like peptides that encourage collagen renewal.7. Choose natural household cleaners.Simple staples like vinegar, water, and baking soda clean effectively without harsh chemicals.8. Repurpose lemons as cleaning sponges. After your morning lemon water, toss the peels in the sink and use them to freshen and scrub surfaces gently.ACTIVE LIVING9. Be active every day.Aim for at least 30 minutes, even in short bursts throughout the day. Daily walking alone has significant health benefits.10. Find a workout buddy.Exercising with a partner adds accountability, motivation, and fun—even if you connect by phone from different locations.11. Set a measurable goal each month.Short-term challenges—like enjoying homemade smoothies for 30 days or skipping packaged snacks—feel manageable and build momentum.MINDFUL LIVING12. Meditate for 10 minutes in the morning.Guided apps such as Headspace, Insight Timer, or Calm make it easy to begin.13. Create a personal recharge space.Whether you pray, reflect, or journal, carve out a few calm minutes each day.14. Develop a personal power phrase.Positive affirmations can shift mindset and interrupt negative thoughts. Choose something uplifting that resonates with you.15. Prioritize quality sleep.Rest allows your body to repair and reset. Even small improvements in sleep habits can lead to a healthier you.Above all, be kind—to yourself and to others. Kindness truly transforms wellbeing, one small moment at a time.

16 | North Naples News January 2026reviewed byannakarrasave you been to Books on Third yet? Tucked above Ridgway Bar & Grill, it is a gorgeous gem in the Third Street South shopping district that opened this fall. My first visit was on their second day, and I was enchanted with the space as I browsed through their stock. In the back by the glossy coffee table books there is a shelf that has a row of books in unassuming gray covers. I stepped close to have a look and discovered Persephone.Persephone Books in an English publisher whose mission is to reprint neglected fiction and non-fiction, mostly written by women, and mostly from the middle of the twentieth century. Each title is bound in a simple gray cover, but the endpapers are glorious – colorful vintage patterns from another era. On Mariana, for example, there is a bright fabric pattern of tulips from 1933.To tell you more about Mariana, I must tell you a bit about my grandmother. Eileen Nelson, who like Monica Dickens, was also born in 1915, but in Minneapolis. My grandma was a voracious reader, something she impressed upon me from a young age. As I grew up, she gave me many or her favorites from her own bookshelf to read, such as Frenchman’s Creek (DuMaurier, 1941) and Jubilee Trail (Bristow, 1950). All this is to say I have read widely across the twentieth century because of her. Books like the ones mentioned above were popular in their day. Tastes have changed over the decades where now we read propulsive thrillers with gasp-worthy plot twists. But I encourage you to step back in time and refresh your palate with a different kind of tale.Mariana opens with protagonist Mary Shannon at a country cottage during a fierce storm. It’s wartime, and she hears on the radio that the ship carrying her young husband has sunk. Then the storm knocks out the power and the phone lines, and she has no way to find out more information until the morning. Instead of worrying about the future, she decides to fill her head with memories. What follows is a retelling of her life from eight years old to the present as she passes time through a long night.More character study than plot-driven, Mariana explores Mary Shannon’s world as she grows up torn between the world of her widowed mother and her actor uncle, and the more respectable and well-heeled family on her father’s side. Mary struggles to discover her passions and ultimately find the place where she belongs. It’s a quiet novel, but endlessly satisfying.I urge you to explore Persephone books. There are 153 titles to choose from to date and more will be added. Sink into a book that was once wildly popular in its day and rediscover a different sensibility and lens with which to view the world. Stop by Books on Third or visit persephonebooks.co.uk to learn more.∞ AUTHOR PROFILEMonica Dickens (1915-1992, pictured left) was an English writer born to an upper middle class London family. She rejected her upbringing and privilege by going into domestic service as a young woman. Her experiences from her life as a cook and maid were the basis for her first novel: One Pair of Hands (1939). She married an American soldier and moved to the U.S., and continued to write novels mainly set in England. She wrote dozens of books for both adults and later children, and was very prolific, just like her great grandfather, Charles.HMARIANAby Monica DickensPublisher: Persephone Books377 Pages$40 US

18 | North Naples News January 2026NEVER TOO LATEPLANNING YOUR LEGACY WITH PURPOSEIn a community like ours, filled with accomplished, retired professionals and entrepreneurs, this message holds special meaning. Many have spent decades building their careers, raising families, and giving back. Now, as the pace of life slows, it can be tempting to think that the big dreams and big decisions are behind you. But the truth is, this chapter of life offers an unparalleled opportunity: the chance to shape your family’s future with purpose and clarity. At Generational Strategies Group, we are wealth preservation and transfer specialists. Our mission is to help successful families minimize estate taxes, protect wealth, and design legacies that last for generations. Led by Chris T. Christensen, our firm delivers sophisticated planning strategies that give families both confidence and control over their futures. The recently enacted One Big Beautiful Bill Act has ushered in one of the most favorable estate-planning climates in modern history. For high-net-worth families, it unlocks strategies once beyond reach—opening extraordinary opportunities to protect assets, safeguard family businesses, and build philanthropic legacies that endure. This is why we are excited to host Pass the Torch: An Exclusive Wealth and Estate Planning Event. Join us as Chris T. Christensen and guest speaker Brad A. Galbraith, Esq. discuss:• How current tax laws create opportunities for advanced planning.• Strategies to leverage tax exemptions to create additional wealth to fund your legacy and positively impact your family and communities you care about for generations.• Methods to decrease the income tax burden of IRAs and other qualified plans.• The Zero-Estate Tax Plan designed to deliver 100% of your life’s work to your children, grandchildren, and charitable causes.• And more, with insights you can apply directly to your own planning. The seminar is valuable for every stage of planning. If you have never started, you’ll leave knowing you have begun. If you already have a plan, you will want to consider how new planning opportunities can be utilized to benefit your life and the lives of the people, causes and communities that you cherish.Procrastination leads to uncertainty, and uncertainty leaves the future of your estate in the hands of the IRS instead of your loved ones. But just as Lewis reminds us, it’s never too late to set a new goal — whether that goal is to travel more freely, give more generously, or simply enjoy peace of mind knowing your affairs are in order.Join us at The Ritz-Carlton Beach Resort on January 10 or 17. Seating is limited, and we encourage you to reserve your spot early. Spend a morning with us and walk away with the clarity and assurance that comes from taking the first step toward protecting your family’s future.Your legacy deserves nothing less.“You are never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream.” – C.S. 24 | North Naples News January 2026STARTING THE NEW YEAR WITH MIND-BODY RENEWALThe author of Diet Slave No More!, Svetlana Kogan, MD, IFMCP is a Board-Certified Internal Medicine, Holistic & Functional Medical Doctor with 25 years of experience. CustomLongevity.com | 239.676.6883DR. KOGANMD. IFMCPJanuary always brings big resolutions — lose weight, get fit, eat better, sleep more. But in my experience, the most powerful change we can make is not dramatic or flashy. It’s the shift that happens quietly inside: a commitment to resetting the mind and nervous system so that all other goals become sustainable. Many of my patients walk into the new year feeling stressed, overwhelmed, chronically tense, or emotionally drained. They tell me their minds race at night, their sleep feels shallow, and they spend more time worrying than living. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Modern life constantly asks us to multitask, hustle, and respond instantly. The nervous system rarely gets the pause it needs to switch from survival mode into healing mode. Before we rush to solve every problem this January, I invite you to consider a different approach: the beginner’s mindset. In Zen philosophy, beginner’s mind (Shoshin) refers to approaching life with open curiosity — letting go of rigid expectations, perfectionism, and selfcriticism. When we release the idea that we must have everything figured out, we allow space for creativity, healing, and joy to return.Instead of asking, “How do I fix this myself?”Ask, “What is one gentle change I’m open to trying today?”Small is sustainable. Small is powerful. Small is where the nervous system feels safe enough to shift.CREATING MIND–BODY RENEWAL THROUGH HABITS1. Start with Breath and StillnessJust five deep breaths can switch the nervous system from fight-or-flight into rest-and-repair. Your shoulders drop. Heart rate slows. Brain fog lifts.Try breathing in through your nose for a count of four, holding the breath for a count of four, and exhaling through the mouth for a count of eight — long exhales signal safety to the brain.2. Sleep as MedicineSleep is not a luxury; it is primary repair time for hormones, immune function, and memory.Aligning sleep with natural day rhythms improves cortisol balance and stress resilience. For many Floridians, morning outdoor light exposure is essential: sunlight within the first hour after waking helps reset melatonin cycles and improves nighttime sleep. In the evenings, choose paper books over TV, cell phones, and computers. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Mind-Body loves regularity and consistency.3. Move Gently, Move OftenMovement calms stress response and clears mental static. But movement doesn’t have to be intense. A brief beach walk, gentle stretching, or dancing in your living room can shift your state profoundly.TWO-MINUTE PRACTICE TO TRY TODAY• If you are near nature — and in Florida, most of us are — step outside barefoot on the beach or in comfortable shoes elsewhere.• Walk slowly for two minutes.• During this walk, say to yourself:“In this moment, nothing is required of me.”Notice the sound of waves or wind. Notice the temperature of the air. Marvel at the beauty of egrets and pelicans flying by. Notice your breath in your body. Say your prayer of gratitude. This is not exercise — it is nervoussystem repair. This year, instead of pushing harder, try softening. Start with the mind, with breath, with sleep, and with small outdoor rituals that ground you in the present. Your goals will unfold more easily when your nervous system feels safe and supported.A FUNCTIONAL DOCTOR'S PERSPECTIVE

26 | North Naples News January 2026THE ART OF OUTDOOR LIVINGWhen you imagine the ideal version of home, it’s rarely a building or a collection of rooms. Instead, it’s moments. Quiet mornings bathed in warm light. Evenings filled with the hum of conversation. Afternoons where children or grandchildren turn water into laughter. A home that embraces every part of your life, from celebrations to solitude. When your outdoor space is designed well, you receive something far more meaningful than a pool. You gain a lifestyle that nurtures you and the people you love.A thoughtfully designed pool environment becomes the centerpiece of your home. It provides a space to gather effortlessly, without planning or stress. Friends stay longer because the setting promotes connection. Family visits more frequently because the space feels welcoming. You realize that weekends have a new rhythm, shaped by sunlight, water, and the simple pleasure of being surrounded by people you enjoy.Your home also becomes a sanctuary for days when you need peace. When your pool is designed as an extension of your personal retreat, you have a place where the world softens. A Baja shelf becomes your morning reading spot. A raised spa offers your evening reset. Gentle water movement, shaded seating, and warm lighting create an environment that invites quiet reflection. You don’t have to leave home to feel renewed. It’s already waiting for you. With a well-designed layout, you gain flexibility effortlessly. Your pool area can host large gatherings one day and private conversations the next. It can be lively or tranquil, energetic or peaceful. When your home is crafted with intention, each element transitions smoothly between socializing and solitude. You also gain confidence that the space will support your lifestyle for years to come. When your pool environment is built with integrity and care, it feels solid, reliable, and timeless. The flow between spaces feels natural. The surfaces remain beautiful. The lighting enhances every feature. The water stays clear and inviting. You feel the difference every time you step outside. What you also receive is trust. A project guided by clear communication and thoughtful coordination removes uncertainty and stress. You know what to expect, when to expect it, and who is responsible for every detail. Instead of feeling like a construction job taking over your home, you experience a smooth and respectful process. Your time and your property are valued. Your vision stays at the center of every decision.Ultimately, investing in your outdoor space offers more than just design. It creates a destination that reflects how you want to live. A place where your best memories can unfold naturally. A home that grows with you, supports your lifestyle, and returns value every day.Whether you’re envisioning a fresh, modern escape, a cozy gathering spot for family, or a private retreat designed for relaxation, your backyard can become the most meaningful part of your home. It can be the place where you reconnect with yourself, deepen your relationships, and enjoy the life you’ve built.Because in the end, it is not about owning a pool. It is about living a richer, fuller, more intentional life at home.SUNCOAST CUSTOM POOLSMaking backyard dreams come true since [email protected]

Edwards Asset Management is a separate entity from WFAFN.CONCENTRATED STOCKCONCENTRATED INVESTMENTS ARE USUALLY A SIGN THAT SOMETHING WORKED.A company succeeded. A career paid off. A conviction proved itself over time. But success creates complexity. When one stock grows large enough to take control of your portfolio, it begins to limit your focus and your flexibility. If you’ve ever put the stock ticker into your mobile app for one-touch quotes or real-time updates, you know what I’m talking about…THE BIGGEST THING THAT LIMITS MOST PEOPLE FROM TAKING CONTROL OF CONCENTRATION IS TAXES.A stock appreciates for years, maybe decades. The cost basis becomes folklore among friends, family, maybe even your advisor. Owning the position starts to carry a sense of pride. And selling means a tax bill that feels impossible to justify. So, the position (and the risk) stays.WEALTH CREATION VERSUS PRESERVATIONThe counterpunch to managing concentrated stock is that history is full of examples of where concentration has been the thing that built great fortunes. Gates, Bezos, Zuckerberg, Jobs, Walton…these are household names because of the wealth they created. But wealth creation and wealth preservation are different skill sets. The investors who made their fortune through concentration rarely kept it that way. They diversified, planned, and created flexibility long before the market forced them to.That side of the story doesn’t have the same seduction, so it doesn’t get told…but this is why family offices exist.TRADING RISK FOR FLEXIBILITYIn my experience, investors know the risks of a concentrated stock position. They just get stuck trying to figure out how to manage it without creating a tax event. But it doesn’t require liquidation. You have choices, and there are strategies that make this possible. The bad news about choice is that too many choices can create overwhelm – I get that.I like the HOPES framework to help organize the main ways to address concentration risk.HOLD - Retain exposure where it still fits your plan but define limits.OVERLAY - Add derivative-based strategies to your existing concentrated stock position to manage risk or create liquidity without triggering immediate taxes.PHILANTHROPY - Gift appreciated shares to a charitable trust, donor-advised fund, or foundation to create an immediate tax deduction for you and an impact for the causes you care about.EXCHANGE - Contribute stock to a pooled fund to gain diversification while deferring capital gains.SELL - Structured, gradual sales help manage risk and taxes while freeing up capital for new opportunities. Each path in the HOPES framework helps investors trade risk for flexibility. The keyword is trade. As they say in investing, “There is no free lunch.” When it comes to managing concentrated stock, every decision carries a cost – in taxes, timing, or opportunity.Knowledge is power. And when you understand these trade-offs, you’ll feel more confident about how to manage concentrated stock risk in a way that is best for you, your life, and your goals.A PARADOX OF SUCCESS

34 | North Naples News January 2026THEATREZONE KICKS OFF 2026 ON JAN. 8 WITH GRUMPY OLD MEN: THE MUSICALA HEARTWARMING MUSICAL COMEDY ABOUT FRIENDSHIP, FORGIVENESS, AND SECOND CHANCESTheatreZone, Naples’ premier musical theatre company, launches its 2026 season of musicals on January 8, with Grumpy Old Men: The Musical, the hysterically funny story about forgiveness, friendship, second chances, and the joy of rediscovering love.Based on the 1993 film Grumpy Old Men by Mark Stephen Johnson — which starred Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, and Ann-Margret — the 2018 stage musical incorporates witty one-liners and a lighthearted score with a book by Dan Remmes, music by Neil Berg, and lyrics by Nick Meglin.Grumpy Old Men tells the story of Max and John, two feuding neighbors who have spent most of their lives at odds with each other. Now older, they face retirement and loneliness, wondering if they’ll ever experience another spark of excitement. Their rivalry takes a comedic turn when Ariel, a stunning and charismatic new neighbor, moves in across the street. As romantic rivals, Max and John engage in a series of hilarious antics before discovering a heartwarming resolution to their long-standing feud.Curt Denham stars as John Gustafson, a retired history teacher who has all but given up on romance. TheatreZone audiences will remember Denham from Once, Escape to Margaritaville, Rock of Ages, Baby, and Bridges of Madison County. “John reminds me of myself — a bit of a grump who prefers the good old days and being around people I genuinely enjoy,” says Denham. “TheatreZone always feels like home.”Opposite him is Peter McClung as Max Goldman, John’s longtime rival and fishing buddy. With four decades of stage experience, McClung describes Max as “an Archie Bunker type… a little rough on the edges, a simple man, but with a heart of gold.” He adds, “Grumpy Old Men is a beautiful story about forgiveness, family, and friends. I think audiences will see a lot of themselves in this musical and be reminded that life is short — we all need to forgive, embrace, and move on.”Completing the trio is Karen Molnar Danni as Ariel Truax, the warm, freespirited woman whose arrival changes everything. A beloved TheatreZone performer, Danni’s favorite past roles include Svetlana in Chess, Luisa in Nine, Rose in The Secret Garden, Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd, Tessitura in Gypsy, and Violet in 9 to 5.“Ariel is vibrant and free-spirited,” says Danni. “Through her sensuality and zest for life, she becomes the catalyst for change, helping these men realize it’s never too late to fall in love or live more fully.” She continues, “The show is about forgiveness. I think TZ audiences will be reminded that life is too short to argue or hold a grudge.”Together, Denham, McClung, and Danni bring warmth, depth, and irresistible humor to this heartfelt story of love and friendship rediscovered. The score, written by Neil Berg with orchestration by award-winning Larry Hochman, recalls music from the pre-rock’ n roll era of rat pack crooners like Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Dean Martin, and Tony Bennett, with songs that the lead characters were most familiar. According to Berg, “It’s a new old-fashioned musical. If you liked Music Man, you’ll love Grumpy Old Men.” Naples audiences were recently treated to a sold-out performance of Neil Berg’s Artis-Naples show, “50 Years of Rock & Roll,” performed on November 12. TheatreZone’s orchestra will be led by Charles Fornara on piano, with Stephen Parker, Adam Costello, Mike Santiago, Adren Hance on brass, Joe Choomack on bass, and Sean Stollicker on drums.ShowtimesGrumpy Old Men: The MusicalJanuary 8–187:30 p.m.: January 8–11 & January 15–182:00 p.m.: January 10–11 & January 17–18Tickets are $50, $70, or $90, depending on seat selection.Visit Theatre.Zone for tickets or call the box office at 888.966.3352ABOUT THEATREZONETheatreZone performs its professional musical productions in the intimate 250-seat G&L Theatre, conveniently located at 13275 Livingston Road (between Pine Ridge and Vanderbilt Beach Roads) on the campus of the Community School of Naples.TheatreZone’s agreement with the Actors’ Equity Association ensures access to the nation’s finest actors, singers, dancers, musicians, and stage management professionals. ARTIS—NAPLESIN THE GALLERIES AND BEYONDAs Southwest Florida’s home for the visual and performing arts, Artis—Naples offers a multidisciplinary array of experiences throughout the season, with January serving as a particularly vivid example of that breadth of programming. This month, the visual arts take the spotlight as two new exhibitions opening January 10 highlight old and new treasures in The Baker Museum. There & Here: New Perspectives of the Permanent Collection and The Passion of Collecting: Stories in Glass and Ceramics from the Sibrack Collection both showcase an extensive selection of modern and contemporary works the accredited museum has collected over its 25-year history. While There & Here features some treasures seldom seen, what’s unique about this exhibition is the way it is being presented, explained Dianne BrásFeliciano, the museum’s curator of modern art. Tasked by Museum Director and Chief Curator Courtney McNeil to find a new way to tell the story of the works in the collection and the artists who created them, Brás-Feliciano developed a collaborative, community-based curatorial project that enlisted a panel to review the art and shape a unifying theme. After viewing the selected works, the panel chose migration. “It’s very timely,” Brás-Feliciano said. “Everyone has some kind of migration story, so I think a lot of people are going to enjoy it and feel welcome.”The Passion of Collecting offers both a learning experience and a sweeping display of contemporary glass and ceramics. The exhibition—curated by McNeil—features 74 works collected and donated by Dr. Laurence and Rita Sibrack. “They assembled a collection that reflected their tastes and their experiences, representing the very best of what has been created in contemporary glass and ceramics over the past several decades,” McNeil said, adding that the exhibition extends The Baker Museum’s story of studio glass beyond its four large-scale Chihuly installations and “gives a fuller representation of the range, diversity and dynamism of this art movement.”Several other exhibitions continue this month. sonia louise davis: to reverberate tenderlycreates a multisensory environment exploring the artist’s improvisational approach to line, rhythm and sonic space. Florida Contemporary 2025-26 presents four notable Florida-based artists whose work highlights diverse approaches to personal, local and global themes. Tamara de Lempicka examines the Art Deco artist’s cool elegance and bold sense of fashion and design, tracing the distinctive style that propelled her to the center of early 20thcentury café society. Additional ongoing installations include Magritte: Reflections of Another World, the Outdoor Sculpture Trail featuring 15 outdoor works and more.Guillermo Meza (b. Mexico 1917-1997). 42 | North Naples News January 2026WALKING ON SUNSHINEM e x i c a n American artist Leticia Herrera has dedicated her artistic practice to examining the core of human e x p e r i e n c e through visual storytelling. In her paintings, she constantly seeks new interpretations of life’s significant questions. Leticia’s art is guided by her personal journey through cultural shifts and her deep belief in the capacity for human compassion. Herrera’s distinctive “Walkers” series, which she refers to as a style of magical surrealism, features modest yet vibrantly colored figures set against expansive, often gradient backdrops. These figures act as symbols for the collective quest for meaning, reminding viewers that despite our varied cultures and unique narratives, we are all on a shared journey. Through her large-scale canvases, Herrera fosters a profound sense of our collective human story, encouraging audiences to reflect on their own motivations and relationships. Each piece embodies themes of togetherness, belief, and an optimistic vision for the future. What sets Herrera’s work apart is her resolve to depict hope amid uncertainty, honoring the capacity for empathy, even when journeys vary. This compassionate perspective is especially significant in modern art, where the investigation of identity, community, and collective experience continues to be essential. Her characters represent both physical journeys and metaphors for inner exploration, encapsulating the desires and aspirations that shape our identities. Much of the creative energy driving these pairings comes from Margy Metzler, past president of Ikebana International #160, who has played a pivotal role in bringing Ikebana artists into collaboration with Naples’ visual art community.“I personally find joy in working with the different artists because Ikebana is the ART of Japanese flower arranging, which means each design or piece that we do is a work of art,” Metzler explains. “I try to find new artwork to interpret that pushes me outside of my comfort zone so that I can grow as an Ikebana artist.” For 2026, Metzler will be paired with Naples Art CATHY BONACCIAuthor and Marketing & Events ManagerNaples Art DistrictDistrict woodworker Phil Costello, known for his coastal carvings and sculptural forms. We’re also pleased to welcome back Naples Garden Club Designer Jill Chamberlain, who will be collaborating again with watercolor artist Barbara Groenteman. Their artistic partnership has become a favorite among visitors. “Art is about composition — so is floral design,” Groenteman notes. “Jill’s floral interpretations always capture the flow, balance, and color of my artwork.” Chamberlain adds, “The fun aspect of doing an interpretive floral design is seeing how far outside the box you can go and yet have some relation to the artwork.”Abstract acrylic and mixed-media painter Sandee Mahler echoes the shared artistic vision that defines the event. “Both visual art and floral design are expressions of creativity,” she says. Naples Garden Club member Arlene Cluff will once again select one of Mahler’s paintings to translate into a dynamic floral composition. For the Naples Art District, the event embodies its mission to inspire and connect the community through the arts. “Artful Arrangements is a celebration of creativity in its purest form,” says Paula Brody, president of the Naples Art District. “By pairing original artwork with floral design, we invite the community to experience art in a fresh, unexpected way. This event reflects the Naples Art District’s mission to inspire, connect, and showcase the incredible talent that thrives here in Southwest Florida.”A special preview event, “Harmony in Flowers: Discovering the Art of Ikebana,” will take place at 11 a.m. on January 16 at Inspirations Art & Design Gallery, where Jill Gordon Artist, Marcia Borel, Floral DesignerA FUSION OF FINE ART AND FLORAL CREATIVITYCelebrate the ArtsGet InspiredMaster Ikebana Sensei Margy Metzler will give a live demonstration. 46 | North Naples News January 2026EMPTY BOWLS NAPLESNEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS For 20 years, Empty Bowls Naples (EBN), a 501(c)(3), has gifted many food pantries in the Lee and Collier communities with generous grants; so far, totals are over one million dollars! The story of how this has been accomplished reads like a fairy tale.Due to generous potters who make thousands of bowls, EBN takes them out to area groups to be painted. Civic groups, churches, colleges, life care/nursing homes, corporations, hotel conventions, condo associations, etc., are actively involved in painting and finishing these beautiful creations for sale. Funds become part of the EBN Grant Program and are distributed in June.Spearheaded by Betsy Dawson, a small but mighty group of committed volunteers has embraced the mission to end hunger “One Bowl at a Time.”In addition, hundreds of residents have joined this effort by artists donating pieces, sponsoring, becoming Friends of EBN, creating pottery pieces, and, of course, painting over 5,000 bowls! “Neighbors helping neighbors” is truly the guiding force behind the heartwarming support shown by this community. The annual EBN event has become a very special place for area residents to come and gather, choose a bowl, sample soups, engage in a silent auction and boutique, and view potters at their creative best…just to name a few activities. The outpouring of love felt is palpable, especially since attendees know that their ticket price has a direct effect on many lives in their community. The annual event takes place in Naples Cambier Park this coming January 17. Admission is $30, which entitles the entrant to unlimited helpings of over 50 soups in a pottery bowl of their choosing from local clubs and restaurants and Panera Bread. There is music, pottery demonstrations, a high school drum line, and a silent auction. Over $225,000 was raised last year by not-forprofit Empty Bowls Naples. Empty Bowls is always looking for artists and volunteers. If you would like to learn more, please contact us at [email protected] or on Facebook @emptybowlsnaples. Celebrate the ArtsGet Inspired
