52 | Old Naples News March 2026GROWING CHANGEHOW NAPLES GARDEN CLUB PUTS THE ENVIRONMENT IN THE FOREFRONT When you hear garden club, the first thing you think of is flowers, but not so true with Naples Garden Club. Since 1953, the club has brought both an awardwinning flower show and a sell-out house & garden tour to our community each year. Floral design and horticulture have been at the heart of the club, but recently this organization has become more engaged in the environment. Club leaders have ignited this commitment in many ways. EDUCATION To make members savvier about what is happening in Florida ecosystems, there has been a focus on our water, our coastlines, and our way of life. To enlighten members, the club has had presentations on topics including microplastics, climate change, and the value of plants in improving local beaches and water. NETWORKING Naples is home to organizations that have environmental expertise to tap into. Florida Gulf Coast University’s Water School South, nationally renowned for its research, is located within the Naples Botanical Garden. The botanical garden itself champions that the key to healthy ecosystems is plants. It works with area and even international decision makers to encourage the correct plant choices in addressing environmental issues. The local League of Women Voters has been sharing with groups its plastics research. PROPOSING SMALL CHANGES When its 250 members make small changes in their behavior, it adds up to a big impact. Carpooling, making green choices in the kitchen, cleaning, health and beauty products are all topics covered at meetings. The slow fashion vs. fast fashion concept has been highlighted. Members are encouraged to embrace “refuse” as the fourth tenet of the recycle, reuse, reduce strategy for waste management. EXPANDING REACH Members now encourage the children in their lives to get off the sidewalk and into nature to help them relate better to the earth. The 1000 attendees of the House & Garden Tour on January 31 all received aluminum water bottles rather than plastic, Naples Flower Show & Garden MarketMarch 13-14at Naples Botanical GardenUnder the Big Topalong with a message about the switch. The club has an endowed fund at FGCU, which annually provides environmental science scholarships. To date, 23 students have been recipients. Naples Garden Club awards grants to local nonprofits to support carefully vetted environmental projects.Perhaps the most important thing the Naples Garden Club does is cultivate optimism. With so much environmental news that can be discouraging, this garden club offers a reminder that progress is possible – one home and one garden at a time.

The property, a former WesBanco Bank branch office, was recently purchased by Bill and Nena Beynon, current residents of Naples, Florida, who maintain deep roots in West Virginia. Bill Beynon, originally from Weirton, and his wife Nena are gifting the nearly 7,000-square-foot facility to the Community Bread Basket to support and expand its mission of serving local families in need. 62 | Old Naples News March 2026The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in North America and the third largest in the world, harboring some of world's tastiest fish, crabs and oysters. Seafood connoisseurs prize its renowned Eastern oysters for their sweet, buttery, and slightly briny flavor. Chincoteague Island, barely 7 1/2 miles long and half a mile wide, lies just off the peninsula that makes up Virginia's Eastern Shore, separating the Chesapeake Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. It's so narrow that one can witness both a luminous pink sunrise and a flaming red sunset in the same day from the same spot. Parallel to Chincoteague is Assateague Island, partly in Virginia, partly in Maryland at the northern end: 37 unbroken miles of dune-fringed beaches, salt marshes and maritime forests rich with wildlife. And most remarkably, the shaggy-maned Wild Ponies of Chincoteague. These shy, pint-size horses have the power to draw 50,000 visitors in a single week to this tiny seafaring town, population 3,300. BartlettPIRATES, OYSTERMEN AND THE LAIDBACK CHINCOTEAGUE VIBEWith its 500-year legacy of pirates and oystermen, Chincoteague (the island and its town) is a place out of time. Not counting one unpainted (and reputedly haunted) log pioneer home, circa 1800, and an intriguingly lopsided cottage of many colors at the top of Pony Swim Lane, many homes reflect a salty maritime vibe, with weathered paint tones, widows' walks and broad screened porches. Adirondack chairs, rock fire pits and ancient whelk shells, predating the indigenous Algonquin people by several million years, are the outdoor accessories of choice. Visitors come for the year-round fishing and clam digging; to go oystering (November - March) and blue crab netting (March - November). They come to watch rocket launches from Wallops Island Flight Facility on America's first Space Coast, where NASA's predecessor launched its first rocket in 1945, two years before the launch of Bumper 2 from Cape Canaveral. Wallops Island Flight Facility remains NASA's premier location for suborbital and small orbital activities and to date has launched more than 16,000 rockets. The admission-free Wallops Visitor Center, a few miles from the launch range, offers unobstructed launch viewings and impressive interactive exhibits. In summer, crowds flock to Chincoteague's Blueberry Festival, the largest fine arts and crafts event on Virginia's Eastern Shore, and in the fall, for Chincoteague's Oyster Festival, heralding the start of the oyster season. Many make Chincoteague a stop on their way to Chatham Vineyards and Winery along the Chesapeake Bay Wine Trail where ancient, mineral-rich seabeds and salt air contribute to the uniqueness of the proprietary Steel Chardonnay, Oak Chardonnay, and other French viniferastyle wines. The family-owned estate hosts seasonal happenings, including monthly Winter Wine and Oyster Weekends. ABOVE ALL, IT'S THE PONIES! Although they roam free in the marshes, forests and beaches of Assateague Island, they're not technically wild — they're feral — because they receive care from humans. And they're not technically ponies, but their stature falls below the 14 hands (56 inches)

64 | Old Naples News March 2026required to be called a horse. Legend says they survived a shipwrecked Spanish frigate in the 1700s, which is far more intriguing than the truth, which is that they probably descended from standard size farm horses sent out to graze on the islands to avoid fencing laws and taxation. Over centuries, they evolved into a stockier, shorter breed to adapt to harsh seacoast conditions. The Fish & Wildlife Service permits Chincoteague's volunteer fire department to graze 150 adult ponies on refuge lands. Twice a year the firefighters, called Saltwater Cowboys, round them up and herd them across the 200-yard channel for wellness checks and veterinary care. In July, they round up the entire herd, including spring foals. Spectators gather at dawn to watch the picturesque scene as the Saltwater Cowboys walk the ponies along the beach. They'll swim on the slack tide, when it's calm enough for the young foals. Meanwhile, 40,000 people await their arrival on the opposite shore for the launch of Pony Swim Week, surrounding the auction where up to 70 foals are sold to balance the population, care for the herd, and support the fire company. Six foals with strong bloodlines are \"buybacks.\" Last year's top buyback, which came with coveted naming rights, sold for $100,000.Chesapeake  Nasa & Wild PoniesMISTY OF CHINCOTEAGUEThe wild ponies of Chincoteague became legend when a newborn gold and white palomino pinto captured the heart of a children's author named Marguerite Henry in 1947. Her book, Misty of Chincoteague, remains an international bestseller. Misty was born and lived her life on a ranch which is now owned by the Museum of Chincoteague Island. Some of her descendants serve as guest ambassadors during the weekly ranch tours. Misty herself and her foal, Stormy, are preserved at the museum, which also showcases artifacts from the beautiful Assateague lighthouse, the original volunteer fire company, shipwrecks, and the oysterman culture.
