34 Naples Visitors Guide | 2024 When strolling along the glistening streets of downtown Naples, you can’t help but feel a strong history. At the heart of the glamorous bars, restaurants, and boutiques that now line the streets of 5th Avenue S, is a sense of community beating stronger than ever. Right at its center lies The Naples Players (TNP) which has acted as a home for the Naples theatre and art community for more than 20 years. Much like downtown Naples, over that period of time, their programs and impact on the community have experienced significant growth, but the building and their message have remained the same: to build community through exceptional access to the power of theater. TNP has been an integral part of the local community since 1953. An idea born in the home of Henry and Mary Watkins, the fledgling theatre company would go on to stage TNP GalaTNP Groundbreaking TNP - The Sound of Music TNP - The Hunchback of Notre Dame 34 Naples Visitors Guide | 2024

Now, TNP is undergoing a $20 million renovation that will support and uplift the community in a whole new way. With more than 60,000 annual audience members, over 65,000 annual volunteer hours, and more than 10,000 children and adults served in arts education, The Naples Players is looking to the future. “The Naples Players is becoming a cultural hub leading a shift in the national perception of how theatres can impact their communities - and this building is a vital step.” Says CEO/ Executive Artistic Director Bryce Alexander “We have had the privilege of serving our community faithfully over the past 70 years and this building will not only allow that to continue, but shift a national culture as a response.” The new facility, designed by David Corban Architect, PLLC, boasts of a brand new balcony in the renovated Kizzie Theater, a new educational theater (The Glass Theater), improvements to the space and technology in the Price Theater, and a cafe for our volunteers, patrons, and the public. TNP is putting an emphasis on wellness, sporting one of the first fully sensory-friendly boxes in the country allowing for patrons and their families to experience theatre all showrun long who previously did not have the opportunity. Led by BUILD, and financed by Lake Michigan Credit Union and Finemark, this 20-million-dollar renovation will be complete in March. When the facility reopens, TNP will continue bringing art and community to 5th Ave South immediately with two smash hits, and already rapidly selling shows: The Producers and The Play That Goes Wrong. In the meantime, TNP will continue performances offsite with a new nine-show season. Visit their website (naplesplayers.org) for more information on their renovation, and how to buy tickets or get involved while they are offsite.

Naples Visitors Guide | 2024 37 ARTS Performing Artis—Naples, the premier destination for the visual and performing arts in Southwest Florida and home of The Baker Museum and the Naples Philharmonic, announced its full 2023-24 season of visual and performing arts offerings. The season’s slate of art exhibitions, classical music programs, symphonic pops concerts, dance performances, touring Broadway productions, special presentations, Lifelong Learning lectures and film exemplifies the multidisciplinary arts organization’s dedication to presenting world-class programming across artistic disciplines. “This season, Artis—Naples delves deep into the sensational world of art, immersing patrons in an indepth exploration of the power of our perception. Our 2023-24 season theme, Artistic Senses—See, Hear, Taste, encompasses our commitment to providing transformative arts experiences that blur the lines between the visual and performing arts, engaging the senses on multiple levels,” said CEO and President Kathleen van Bergen. “We are also delighted to extend a warm welcome to Sharon and Timothy Ubben Artistic and Music Director Designate Alexander Shelley, whose appearances with the orchestra will provide a compelling preview of the exciting years to come under his artistic leadership.” “We have an exhilarating schedule of orchestral programming on both our Naples Philharmonic Pops and Masterworks series, including a selection of favorite works by legendary film composer John Williams, a piano duel between crooners Frankie Moreno and Tony DeSare and a variety of classical favorites performed by an impressive roster of esteemed guest artists and conductors,” said Executive Vice President, Artistic Operations David Filner. “Some additional performing Artis—Naples Photo courtesy of The Scout Guide Naples Alexander Shelley and Naples Philharmonic Lang Lang ©Sony Music Entertainment Yann Orhan Franz Welser-Möst conducts Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
38 Naples Visitors Guide | 2024 arts highlights include a special holiday program by international superstar singer Sarah Brightman, piano sensation Lang Lang in recital, the globally acclaimed little orchestra Pink Martini, the touring Broadway production of Tina – The Tina Turner Musical and the return of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with esteemed conductor Franz Welser-Möst, among many other thrilling presentations.” Coinciding with the 100-year anniversary of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, the 2023-24 season will feature a multidisciplinary exploration of the life, music, art and collections of George Gershwin. Highlights include the Naples Philharmonic in a Masterworks program featuring both the jazz band and full orchestra versions of Rhapsody in Blue with pianist Orli Shaham and guest conductor David Robertson, a musical tribute to the life and music of George Gershwin by renowned vocalist and Gershwin expert Michael Feinstein and the Naples Philharmonic Jazz Orchestra closing out its All That Jazz series with a celebration of Gershwin’s works. The museum’s George Gershwin and Modern Art: A Rhapsody in Blue exhibition reveals a lesser-known side of Gershwin, exploring his prowess as an art collector and artist. “The Baker Museum often invites visitors to reconsider what they know about art, and George Gershwin and Modern Art: A Rhapsody in Blue gives patrons much to think about. Gershwin’s passion and talents extended into the visual arts, and this exhibition—combined with multiple performances of his music—will offer patrons a more complete picture of his creative mind,” said Museum Director and Chief Curator Courtney McNeil. “From this monumental exhibition of Gershwin to the vibrant works of Brooklyn-based Latinx artist Tamara Kostianovsky, portfolios by Pop Art icon Andy Warhol and numerous other compelling exhibitions, there is much in store at The Baker Museum this season.” New subscription packages and single tickets for non-subscription presentations are on sale now, and single tickets to subscription concerts, lectures and Broadway performances are available beginning September 19. 40 Naples Visitors Guide | 2024 Keewaydin Island is a barrier island in Florida that has no cars, roads, or bridges. It’s approximately eight miles long and about a half mile wide. It can be reached only by boat. Most commonly known for the south tip of the island, where local boaters congregate at the end of the eight mile long isthmus, where you can park your boat on the shore and enjoy people watching, the beach, and scenery. If you do not own your own boat, you have a few different options today either by renting a boat, taking a shuttle, or hiring a captain . While we suggest packing a cooler, there are numerous food and drink vendor boats that pull up to the beach for the day as well. They are available most days between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Most vendors accept credit cards but cash is sometimes easier. KEEYWAYDIN ISLAND Bask in the sun PHOTO BY CHRIS L. SMITH 40
Naples Visitors Guide | 2024 41 This island is a great place for fishing, shelling, swimming, walking, and to watch the sunset. Some visitors even bring tents to camp for a night. Keep in mind that there are no public restrooms on the island. In order to keep this land intact, there are numerous conservatory efforts ongoing so it is important that visitors treat and respect the island as they would their own. It is very important that all garbage and waste is taken off the island with you. Do not take any live seashells and do not cut or pull out any vegetation. Summertime is turtle nesting season, please make sure you stay on the designated paths and do not disturb or touch any of the nests. If you don’t own a boat there’s plenty of rentals to make your way out to the island yourself or you can have a captain take you and your group out as well. Just remember in the State of Florida you must be over 21 to rent a boat with just a driver’s license, otherwise you’ll need to take the state approved boating course. 42 Naples Visitors Guide | 2024 An amazing world exists within mangrovefringed waterways, shell-strewn beaches and freshwater wetlands of the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. Rookery Bay Research Reserve is located between Naples and Everglades National Park and protects roughly 110,000 acres of coastal lands and waters along the Gulf of Mexico. Visitors are invited to experience the Reserve’s many beautiful beaches, bays, and scenic upland areas such as the Rookery Bay observation bridge that crosses a waterway to a trail system meandering through pine flatwood, oak and palmetto habitat. There is also a viewing platform overlooking the water where visitors can sometimes spot manatees, juvenile bull sharks and a myriad of birdlife. The one half-mile trail loop has a gravel surface suitable for fat-tire chairs and strollers. In addition, there are two other primitive loops to hike for more adventurous explorers. Visitors can develop a true sense of place and a deeper connection to Rookery Bay’s unique coastal environment with an exclusive Reserve naturalist-led boat or kayak tour. 46 Naples Visitors Guide | 2024 The greater Naples community has a wonderful resource with the Sharon and Dolph von Arx Wildlife Hospital at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida. Over 3,300 animals were treated and cared for last year. Simple actions can help reduce the number of wildlife adversely affected by the growing human population in Collier County. There are many ways to ensure that wildlife is respected and kept safe from human interaction. Here are a few: 1. Keep your pets on a leash or indoors. Sadly, dog and cat attacks amount for so many of the injuries seen by the Conservancy every year. Collier County has a leash law (which addresses cats, too). The good news is that cats kept indoors thrive as well as being kept away and safe from wildlife and other risks outside. And, there are many dog parks to explore around town. 2. Be mindful of trimming trees or bushes during nesting season, generally in the Spring. Bird nests and other wildlife are especially impacted when their offspring cannot survive to adulthood. If you hold off landscape pruning as well as examine trees and bushes for nests, you will avoid risking the lives of newly born or hatched wildlife. 3. Educate yourselves and volunteer or otherwise support the Conservancy of Southwest Florida and similar organizations. The Conservancy is our neighbor, so close to downtown and the beach in Naples. They standby ready and willing to help with rehabilitation of the wildlife. Let’s all do what we can to minimize their intake. The Conservancy of Southwest Florida is at 1495 Smith Preserve Dr. Naples, Florida 34102, off of Goodlette Road. The wildlife animal hospital phone number is 239.262.CARE (2273).
