While I was at the celebration, I was thinking to myself how different Naples was back then and at the same time how different it is from when I moved here 23 years ago. Naples was just picked by one of the national magazines as the best place to live in the United States. Personally, I think I already knew that seeing our population growth, the traffic that I deal with most days, the difficulty getting restaurant reservations, and fortunately how crowded our retail stores are. I don’t know about everyone else, but I pay attention to the license plates on the cars around me while I’m driving. So many are from the states I’m used to seeing but now I’m seeing license plates from almost every state in America except maybe Alaska. Just in case you haven’t noticed they are building everywhere especially along Immokalee Road and into the estates. When you add the new high rises going up along the gulf it’s easy to understand why the population keeps growing and why we were chosen as the best city in the country to live. Get used to it, they are here, and more are coming. Even with our growth this is still paradise, and it doesn’t snow here. Remember this is winter here and it’s 85 degrees. 6 | Old Naples News April 2023 STATE of theCity by TERESA HEITMANN City of Naples Mayor here are new beginnings and many great happenings in the city this spring! April is one of my favorite months in Naples. The City of Naples Parks and Recreation Department has worked hard to bring a season of activities. If you haven’t enjoyed the Naples Jazzmasters, the Artcrafters show, and the Naples Dixieland band at River Park Community center, now is the time! Check out the calendar on naplesgov. com to view the many events happening in the city. At least twenty-two of our beaches have been remedied and opened since the devastation Hurricane Ian brought to our community. We should be proud of the city staff that continue to work hard to bring Naples back to all its beauty. We should also be proud of one another for the continued efforts many are taking to help a neighbor that has not fully recovered from the hurricane. You all make me proud to be mayor of a community that lends a hand to a neighbor when a hand is needed, this is what community is all about. City Council has a list of priorities that we are addressing. These priorities include, but are not limited to the following: modifying planned development regulations, single-family lot combinations regulations, reviewing and approval of new development projects, modifying lot coverage regulations for multi-family and transient lodging facilities, reviewing outdoor dining regulations, reviewing signage and parking regulations in all districts, review interlocal agreements (including beach parking), address affordable/workforce housing, working with the Naples Airport Authority on solutions to the frequency of flights, and reviewing the pros and cons of roundabouts. All these items are priorities so we can maintain our quality of life. We share in the community’s concerns regarding land development code items. Because of this concern, the city employed a land use consultant. Our land use consultant is assisting us in the evaluation of the current requirements/rules and to determine if and what changes may be necessary to be consistent and to maintain our beautiful City of Naples. The main topics of discussion were the following: lot coverage, setbacks, pervious areas, base point measurement for maximum height in commercial and mixed-use buildings, “build to” requirement in the Fifth Avenue South special overlay districts, and the density/intensity regulations. The city welcomed all members of the community to a listening session where these ideas were shared, they will be brought to the council for further discussion in April. It has been wonderful to see restaurants and streets full of people! Naples continues to move forward in its recovery efforts, and I am pleased with how far we have come! Let us remember to take a moment to be grateful for the wonderful town in which we reside and celebrate all the beauty surrounding us every day. God Bless, Mayor Teresa Heitmann T "You all make me proud to be mayor of a community that lends a hand to a neighbor when a hand is needed, this is what community is all about."

t 85 years young, Naples resident Larry Eaton still runs five times a week, usually three or four miles a day. His decision to go out for track in the spring of his senior year of high school to win an award for “Best Student-Athlete" proved to be a defining moment in his life’s trajectory. “I discovered not only was it my best sport, but it was also the only sport I was really good at,” explained Larry. “My college education comes from [track], my wife comes from [track], my career comes from [track]. All of which has worked out amazingly well.” After retiring from 3M (originally the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company), Larry connected with staff and students at Naples High School (NHS) who shared a similar passion for running. What started as an annual donation to one school, NHS, has expanded to support all high school cross-country teams—boys and girls—in the A-rated Collier County Public Schools (CCPS). Looking ahead to School Year 2023- 24, Larry will donate a total of $36,000 to nine schools: Barron Collier High, Everglades City School, Golden Gate High, Gulf Coast High, Immokalee High, Lely High, Naples High, A TO ‘SAVE ONE KID’ RUNNING AND GIVING "At some of our schools, if it wasn’t for Larry, those students wouldn’t have running shoes.” – Mark Rosenbalm CCPS Supervisor of Interscholastic Athletics and Student Activities L: Larry Eaton in his younger years R: Larry attended Alfred University in NY Tara Watkins from Naples High School Hector Torres from Naples High School Matt Damouni from Naples High School Support from Larry propelled Everglades City Cross County runner Nora Potter to the State competition

Mark sees the support of springboarding our teams to the top of Florida. This school year, seven out of eight Collier high schools placed at the State Cross Country Meet, widespread success shared by students in every corner of Collier County. “Larry has been able to let the coaches do more coaching, less fundraising and getting down to techniques and what they need to be focusing on,” Mark added. “You can see it has turned our programs around and put Collier County on the map as a running county.” Nora Potter was the first person from Everglades City School to attend the State Competition, held this school year in Tallahassee. “And she was able to do it because of Larry’s support,” explained Lisa Morse, CCPS Senior Director for Strategic Engagement and District Initiatives. Despite blazing fast times and remarkable accomplishments, Larry prefers to judge success by the sport’s ability to help kids “make it through the teenage years” and build friendships with peers who carry profound influence on their life choices. He is nimble on his feet and quick to deflect credit toward people and organizations that created the system for this support to continue. “Larry is really the only person in Collier who has created an endowment to make sure this sport is supported for a really long time,” Lisa explained. He gave an initial endowment through a fund at Collier Community Foundation and has worked with CCPS to funnel the money to schools and students. “Larry came to us with this idea and how he wanted to replicate it,” said Meredith Nassif, Director of Philanthropic Services for Collier Community Foundation. “It was about partnering with Lisa, and she brought Mark into the fold and we were able to get this off the ground.” Each year, this team of philanthropic connectors meets with CCPS crosscountry coaches to share stories of the fund’s impact and look ahead to future needs. Just as Larry has a passion for cross-country, this model of support for students could be replicated in other areas. “It would be wonderful if there were other people who were passionate, whether about a sport, debate team or whatever they want to support, that’s what we are here for, to create those philanthropic plans,” Meredith added. Larry’s mark on Collier County will endure far beyond the day when he runs his final mile. In a sport defined by seconds, Larry’s looking at the long haul. by CHAD OLIVER Executive Director of Communications & Community Engagement Collier County Public Schools

12 | Old Naples News April 2023 United Way of Collier and the Keys Mobilizes Caring Power by STEVE SANDERSON CFRE, President and CEO of United Way of Collier and the Keys or families directly impacted by the force of Hurricane Ian in late September 2022, time has not healed all wounds. Consider Priscilla Russell who spent 24 hours stuck in an attic while waiting for water to recede. She made it out alive even though her home suffered severe damage. Priscilla credits the work of United Way of Collier and the Keys for helping navigate the disaster recovery process and to be able to move back home. We are now positioned to assist even more families thanks to the opening of a Disaster Assistance Center (DAC) located in Naples at 2044 Tamiami Trail North on the western perimeter of the Coastland Center Mall property. This will provide a one-stop shop for those in need, with a variety of services and resources to assist with housing, food, and clothing, as well as help with replacing lost documents and accessing financial assistance. In addition to these services, the center will also provide referrals for emotional support and counseling, as well as information and referrals to other community resources. We are deeply committed to supporting the residents of F Collier County as they recover from the impacts of Hurricane Ian. The DAC is one of the many ways we are working to ensure that everyone has the resources and support they need to rebuild and move forward. Representatives from pacesetting donors FORVIS and Fifth Third Bank were present at the DAC opening event. FORVIS, which ranks among the nation’s top 10 public accounting firms, donated $500,000 to support the DAC and other disaster recovery efforts in the area. The company’s partners and associates saw Ian’s devastation firsthand while meeting in our community just weeks after Ian hit. They took part in a United Way service project and left with a vision of how to make a greater impact. Leadership at Fifth Third Bank committed $100,000 to the hurricane relief fund. Those are just two examples of businesses and individuals coming alongside the United Way of Collier and the Keys as we strive to make our community whole again. It is important we continue to share stories of impact and creatively reach more people with this important mission. In late February, I was honored to go on the ice and "drop the puck" with Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) Interim Superintendent Dr. Leslie Ricciardelli at a Florida Everblades hockey game. Two dollars from each of the 1,100+ tickets sold through CCPS went to support United Way of Collier and the Keys. Donors provide the resources for our support of 37 partner agencies and directly support services such as income tax preparation assistance, the 211 helpline, individual disaster case management, homelessness prevention, and much more. To donate or join the mission, I invite you to call 239.261.7112, visit online uwcollierkeys.org, or stop in and see us at 9015 Strada Stell Court, Suite 204, Naples, FL 34109. When we mobilize the caring power of our community, we collectively advance the common good. 14 | Old Naples News April 2023 BOOK REVIEW reviewed by anna karras oah Gardner, nicknamed “Bird” by his mother, is thirteen years old; his mother left without a trace several years before. His father, Ethan Gardner, once a professor, now works as a circulation assistant in the Harvard Library. The two of them live in student housing, they eat in the dining hall. Their existence is a small one, and Ethan does his best to protect Bird from the way life has evolved in the United States. The Crisis, a severe economic downturn filled with scarcity of food and work, punctuated by protests and violence, has given rise to PACT: the government’s answer to quelling the restlessness. The Protection of American Cultures and Traditions is meant to help citizens back to work, and back to prosperity. And with this hope for a new future, a scapegoat for the troubles is gradually chosen: the Chinese. Margaret (Miu) Gardener, Bird’s mother, unwittingly made the face of the resistance against PACT. The daughter of Chinese immigrants and a poet, her words are used as a rallying cry for those who protest the overreach of PACT into the lives of those who don’t embrace it fully. Bird, who is half Chinese, is not well-liked by his classmates because of his black hair and the slant of his eyes. To protect her child, Margaret disappears. Several years pass with no word. But then Bird receives a letter in the mail, a single sheet of paper covered in drawings of cats. He knows it is from his mother, but must dig into his memory of a fairy tale she used to tell him to follow the clues to unlock the letter’s meaning. It starts Bird on a journey to find her and understand why she left him. Our Missing Hearts is a story about family, a theme about which Ng constantly writes. But more than that, it is a story about how the love between parent and child, husband and wife is tested in times of civil unrest. Being Chinese American, Ng is making a statement that Margaret Gardner is more than her ethnic background—she is a mother who loves her child so fiercely that she is willing to do anything to save him from unfounded peril, even pay an ultimate price from speaking her truth. ∞ AUTHOR'S PROFILE Bestselling author Celeste Ng is an American writer of Chinese descent, her parents immigrated from Hong Kong before her birth. She earned a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Michigan. Famous for her novels Little Fires Everywhere, and Everything I Never Told You, she is a master at telling the story of the nuclear family in all its iterations. 16 | Old Naples News April 2023 or nearly four decades, STARability Foundation has been shining a light on abilities, not disabilities. Formed by a small community of caring parents, STARability has become one of Southwest Florida’s leading nonprofits. Today, the organization is opening a world of possibilities for hundreds of individuals ages 14 and older by offering a variety of inclusive, community-based programs focused on vocational training, continuing education, teamwork, social engagement, and community involvement. “We refer to the individuals in our programs as STARs because they brighten our lives, our community and our world,” said Karen Govern, CEO of STARability Foundation. “Our STARs inspire our work and spark our passion to create new initiatives and to build on the innovative programs that help them thrive. STARs show us, again and again, the achievements and milestones they can accomplish—reaching new goals each day, developing critical life skills, and laying the foundation for a positive future. Intellectual and developmental disabilities affect approximately seven million individuals in the United States, as well as their loved ones and caregivers. While families receive support while their children are in school, they are often unable to find services once they age out of the school system. In Collier County alone, an estimated 1,000 students with disabilities in Collier County schools will need supplemental services when they age out of the system. That is where STARability Foundation comes in—as true advocates for building inclusion through work, play, learning and living. Adam V., a participant in the Trailblazer Academy, is just one of the many STARs that is thriving with STARability. “I started doing the Trailblazer program four years ago,” said Adam. “STARability has changed my life. I help out the community. I have new skills. I enjoy meeting new people. I love coming to Trailblazer four days a week. I'm becoming more independent every day.” STARability is dedicated to promoting solutions for the needs of participants at every level, allowing them to express themselves through music, art, and dance, use technology to interact with others, and find rewarding jobs. Caring staff and volunteers take pride in helping them reconnect with old friends and form bonds with new ones. Currently, STARability offers a variety of programs that promote inclusive employment, engagement, and independence such as STAR Connections—creative expression workshops, wellness classes, continuing education and sports leagues, the Trailblazer Academy—a pioneering day program, employment services, and the STAR Store and Studio. For many families, such as the Kandels and STAR participant Hannah, STARability has become a lifeline. “One of the biggest goals for my family and for many others in the area has been finding, creating and sharing services and resources,” said Hannah’s sister, Geena. “Over the years, watching the growth of Hannah, as well as the growth throughout Naples and Southwest Florida to create options for jobs, social events, skill development, housing, etc. so that these individuals can become a productive part of society has been so important to me and my family. STARability has been a wonderful organization in providing tools and opportunities for participants and their families, helping us grow our support network and foster additional awareness and outreach within the community.” To learn more about the services and program offerings available, please visit STARability.org. 18 | Old Naples News April 2023 f you’re a person who appreciates art but who’s never given it a shot yourself, you might be missing out on one of the greatest joys life has to offer: the creative life. “A creative life is an amplified life. It's a bigger life, a happier life, an expanded life, and a hell of a lot more interesting life,” says Elizabeth Gilbert, popular TED Talk speaker and author of Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear. But whether you’re a newbie just venturing into creativity or you’ve been doing it a long time, you’re going to have to spar with creativity’s arch-enemy, selfdoubt. People say the only true limitations to creativity are self-imposed. More times than I can even count I’ve heard the same words when someone looks at my artwork: “Wow, I can’t even draw a stick figure.” There it is—the old defeatist attitude. Did you ever stop to think that maybe this and so much more is possible, if only there were someone to show you how and give you a little encouragement? You might be surprised to know that even seasoned artists battle self-doubt. Trying out a new technique or venturing into a subject matter previously unexplored can leave an artist feeling like an inept student once again. But exploring something new is invigorating to the creative mind. That’s why so many of us freely admit that no matter how much experience we have in the artmaking world, we will always and forever be students. Venturing into the creative life means leaving the safety of well-worn routines and habits, which can often squash by PATRICE SCHELKUN creative juices. It’s about chasing those things that inspire and thrill you and exploring things you’ve never done before, even if they seem a bit scary. If you can get past the fear—and often it’s a fear of failure—creativity will flourish. I recently had an opportunity to explore a new avenue of creativity with my friends in the Naples Art District. Nora Beyrant, the owner of ArtLab on J & C Boulevard, had an idea to paint a large outdoor mural on the front and side of the large building her studio occupies. Her thought was to design a public art project that would draw attention not only to her studio but to this burgeoning commercial district that has become home to over 100 artist studios. Though I’ve had experience doing mural work, I had never taken on a project of this scale and visibility. It was a little scary thinking about the “hows,” but at the same time presented a challenge that stoked my creative juices. Together with Nora and four or five other Naples Art District artists, we fleshed out a design as well as a plan to execute the project. If you’ve had occasion to visit the Naples Art District during their monthly open studio tours or other special I Self-Doubt and the Creative Life Learn to Defeat Your Worst Enemy events, you may have seen this work in progress. It’s now nearing completion. The hope is that this will be the first of many such mural projects within the district that will help identify the area as an arts destination in our community. If you’re ready to set aside fear and stoke your own creative energy, consider enrolling in one of the many art class opportunities planned during the Naples Art District’s Creativity Camp for Adults, running April 29 - May 7. Enjoy a twoday, three-day, or week-long workshop in painting, photography, jewelry-making, glass or fiber arts, or ceramics being offered by teaching artists in their studios. You can also attend evening art demonstrations and presentations with master artists. How do you know if a Med Spa is right for you? hose seeking nonsurgical or minimally invasive cosmetic procedures may find med spas the perfect solution. The focus of a med spa is to provide nonsurgical aesthetic treatments. The most common treatments offered by med spas include botulinum toxin injections (Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®), injectable dermal fillers, nonsurgical fat reduction, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing, and tattoo removal. It is important to note that every med spa offers different procedures. Visit the website or call a med spa ahead of time to find out what services they offer before you visit. The number of people seeking nonsurgical treatments to rejuvenate their skin and bodies is growing. There is an increasing demand for less invasive cosmetic procedures, thus increasing the number of med spas across the country. Naples offers some of the area's best med spas for those who make appearances a priority all year round. Florida's demographics have made the state the second-biggest medical spa market in the country after California. Medical spas have revolutionized the way we age gracefully today. It can be challenging to keep up with a beauty regimen some days. Maintaining a treatment schedule can be difficult as well as knowing when to seek out follow-up treatments or extra treatments are appropriate. A monthly membership, loyalty program, or subscription service offers an affordable way to get regularly customized skincare which many of these med spas offer. Choosing the right beauty product can be confusing with the abundance of options available. You can tell if you are at a top med spa by finding out who selects the products and treatments. In a quality med spa, the products or product lines are selected by an aesthetician or another senior staff member. A simple question about why a particular product was chosen can provide valuable insight. The selection of products at a quality med spa will be based on client feedback and their effectiveness, not just because the brand is popular or because it is associated with a larger medical company offering bulk discounts. Medical spas often operate without being closely supervised by medical professionals. You should ask the med spa how involved its supervising physician is in the facility. The most successful med spas hire experienced aesthetic professionals who work closely with the supervising physician to develop the treatment menu, oversee daily operations, and even consult directly on certain cases. Researching ahead of time saves you money, avoids hassle, and helps you find the right med spa for you. T

22 | Old Naples News April 2023 Procedures can improve quality of life for those struggling with obesity Bariatric Weight Loss ccording to the National Institutes for Health, 30% of American adults are considered overweight, and more than two of every five are categorized as obese. Extra weight can lead to serious health consequences such as cardiovascular disease (mainly heart disease and stroke), type two diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders like osteoarthritis, and some cancers (endometrial, breast and colon). These conditions can cause premature death and substantial disability. Surgical bariatric weight loss procedures can help dangerously overweight individuals avoid these lifethreatening diseases while extending and improving their quality of life. Bariatric weight loss patients also report feeling better physically and emotionally while enjoying their lives with more energy. The two most common bariatric procedures recommended on a case-bycase basis are the laparoscopic gastric sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The gastric bypass and the gastric sleeve procedures are often recommended for patients with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 to 40 who have had little success with diet and exercise. You can calculate your own BMI using a calculator on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website at cdc.gov. “With bariatric surgery, long term, you can expect to lose 75 to 80% of your excess body weight,” said Wesley A. Dailey, MD, who heads up NCH’s bariatric surgery team. “The biggest benefit is controlling risk factors and the complications of obesity—sometimes we A by WESLEY A. DAILEY, MD, NCH Board Certified General Surgeon reverse or cure some of them or get them under control to extend and improve quality of life. The greatest benefit of surgery over medical or less invasive treatments is the durable long-term effect.” The most common of the two surgical options is the gastric sleeve procedure which removes 60% to 75% of the stomach to make it smaller, limiting the amount and type of foods consumed by the patient. The portion of the stomach removed is known to secrete hormones driving hunger- removing this also limits hunger and helps with insulin resistance. “Over two years, you can expect to lose about 70% to 78% of excess weight by staying on the program,” said Dr. Dailey, adding that the gastric sleeve procedure can be performed in a shorter time with less surgery. With the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, a small gastric pouch that holds only a small amount of food is separated from the rest of the stomach. “The small intestine is cut, and a part is attached to the pouch,” explained Dr. Dailey. “Food enters the pouch and goes directly into the middle part of the small intestine, bypassing a good portion of the small intestine and limiting the time of digestion. (Patients) can expect to lose 75 to 82% of excess weight.” For more information about the gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery, call NCH Bariatrics at 239.624.0390. PRE-QUALIFICATIONS FOR WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY: • BMI greater than 30 with at least one complication of obesity (type two diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, hypertension, high cholesterol, asthma, or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) • BMI greater than 35 regardless of co-morbidities • BMI greater than 30 with difficulty managing diabetes. • BMI greater than 27.5 in individuals of Asian decent • Between 18 and 65 years of age (older patients are considered on a case-by-case basis) • Failed attempts at weight loss • Obesity-related health complications • No psychiatric contradictions • Compliance with diet and exercise requirements (may require six months of medically guided weight loss) • Gastric sleeve surgery: • Patients can lose 70 to 78% of excess weight. • Most commonly performed bariatric surgery in the US and internationally • It takes a shorter time with less surgery and no rerouting of the intestines. • Limits the type and amount of food you can eat. • Hunger hormones are reduced, which aids in reversing insulin resistance. • Typically, a one-night hospital stay is required. • Non-reversible surgical option • Gastric Bypass Surgery (Roux-en Y gastric bypass): • Lose 75-82 % of excess weight. • Restricts the amount of food you can eat. • Reduces the absorption of nutrients. • Hospital stays of one to two nights. • Non-reversible surgical option.

24 | Old Naples News April 2023 Unusual Noises in Your Ears by JOHN W. WATFORD, MD Warrant your attention ur inner ears are tiny organs that allow us to not only hear a whisper across the room but also to be able to look with both eyes at objects in the world around us. Our ears are also critical to our ability to stand and move our bodies. Small disturbances within the organs themselves or to the bone or blood vessels nearby can create major changes in how we hear or move. Many people have experienced an unusual, high-pitched, often transient tone in their ears that can cause some mild hearing loss or dizziness called tinnitus (TIN-ni-tus). Physicians encounter some patients suffering from this syndrome continuously. It is difficult to fully treat and is a source of significant burden and discomfort. We internists and primary care physicians rely heavily on our ear, nose, and throat colleagues to evaluate our patients with severe cases that persist and do not respond to initial treatment. Some people experience an audible “swooshing” noise in one or both ears that corresponds to their heartbeat or pulse. Hence, it is called pulsatile tinnitus. Its cause may be very different from more common ringing in the ears and should be carefully evaluated. A person who can hear blood flowing most or all the time requires careful evaluation. Your doctor will examine your ears and may refer you for a formal hearing test and likely examination by an E.N.T. specialist (otolaryngologist). Depending on the hearing test and your history, he or she may also order a brain MRI to fully visualize the functional components of the ear including the ear drum, the three tiny bones of the ear, and the main sensory organs: the cochlea and the semicircular canals. Sometimes, detailed pictures of the blood vessels near O the ear must be taken to make sure no blockages or detours in blood vessels exist that could lead to more severe problems in the future. Those pictures can be taken by CT scan, specially configured MRI study, or angiogram of the blood vessels performed by a neuroradiologist or neurosurgeon. Normal tests are usually very reassuring that no dangerous abnormalities are present. If hearing your own heartbeat isn’t nuisance enough, stranger things do exist. Some people have described a sensation of not only hearing their heart beating and blood flowing in their head but also hearing themselves breathing or hearing their own voice as if it was originating in their head. Similarly, others have described a sensation of “walking on the surface of a drum” and hearing their own footsteps internally. Even hearing one’s own eye movements has been described by individuals with a very curious (and fortunately very rare) problem called Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome (SCDS). It can occur if the bone encasing the superior semicircular canal (one of the sensors of our inner ear that allows us to know our orientation in space) experiences an otherwise very minor disruption that alters how vibrations are usually conducted through the organs of the inner ear. Consequently, tiny pressure waves or vibrations that are not usually transmitted to the sensory part of our inner ears become detectable and disruptive. Injury to the head or sometimes underlying defects that create inconsistencies in bone growth are thought to be causes. Diagnosing SCDS is very difficult, and the cure may require skull surgery. Our inner ears are incredible organs that allow us to interface with our environment and move within it for the duration of our lives. While it is true that most of us will experience transient trouble with our ears, and many of us will experience some hearing loss over time, keep in mind that sudden, odd changes to your hearing or balance warrant a visit to your doctor. Let us use our ears to help you with yours! Dr. John W. Watford is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and has been practicing medicine since 2003. His concierge internal medicine and primary care practice is open and welcoming new patients at 4085 Tamiami Trail N, Suite B103, Naples FL, 34103. 30 | Old Naples News April 2023 United Arts Collier: by ELYSIA DAWN Executive Director All the Arts for all of Collier s the official, state-designated Local Arts Agency for Collier County, United Arts Collier (formerly the United Arts Council of Collier County) has the wellbeing of Collier’s community at the core of its mission. “The arts are the instrument through which UAC makes a positive difference in Collier,” explains Elysia Dawn, the new Executive Director for UAC. “The arts make a meaningful and measurable impact in our community, far beyond being simply enjoyable, which they certainly are.” Ms. Dawn emphasizes her point with compelling data: “In terms of economic impact, the arts are about a $108 million dollar industry in Collier County, supporting around 183 arts and culture organizations, A and nearly 3,000 full-time jobs annually. Of that $108 million, $63 million is spent on employment and local goods and services. The additional $45 million is spent by cultural audiences on restaurants, hotels, parking, and shopping.” UAC recognizes that the arts are not only good for our community from an economic perspective, but they’re also important for our individual health and collective well-being. The arts have been proven in numerous studies to make a difference in our health by improving mood, lowering anxiety, reducing pain and post-traumatic stress disorder, and activating reward pathways in the brain. The arts also make an important difference in the academic achievement of the children in our community. National Elysia Dawn, Jeté | Photo by Steven Baranovics

April 2023 Old Naples News | 31 studies show that children who receive arts education are five times less likely to drop out of school, four times more likely to receive a secondary degree, and four times more likely to be recognized for academic success. Ninety-three percent of Americans believe that the arts are critical for a well-rounded education and more than half rate the importance of the arts as a ten on a scale from one to ten. They also happen to generate a lot of fun, creating a sense of community with inspiration and celebration of the human spirit at the center of it. Ms. Dawn grew up in Naples but left at age fourteen to pursue her career as a professional ballet dancer which led to her dancing in New York City and around the world. Following an injury, her next step was to obtain her undergraduate and master’s degrees from Columbia University (B.A.s in Art History and Business Management and M.S. in Nonprofit Management) while working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she curated and programmed live arts performances in the museum’s unique spaces. When asked about her return to Naples in her new role, Ms. Dawn exclaimed, “It’s one of the greatest joys in my life to return home to my family and friends here and where my love for the arts was introduced. I’m so grateful to this community for valuing and sharing the arts with me as a child and I want to pay forward the experiences I received and the opportunities they afforded me. “It is my hope that local artists, non-profit organizations, businesses, arts supporters, educators, and enthusiasts will join UAC and enjoy our many wonderful benefits including how they can get plugged in and discover new, exciting, and creative ways they can help make a difference in our community. All the impact we make together at UAC takes an incredible community effort and it’s improved with every new member - whether that’s supporting with a financial gift, becoming a partner, volunteering, or spreading the word.” To learn more about or join UAC, please visit www.unitedartscollier.org. We will not judge it as the future will pass judgment as time goes on. We came to Naples in 1971 and it was a charming, easy-going town that had a laid-back attitude and beautiful weather! In the fifty years moving forward, Collier County has grown by leaps and bounds with those looking for this pleasant environment our area has to offer. It has seen many changes to get where it is today with an active arts community, Naples Botanical Garden, Naples Zoo, several parks, and a variety of attractions to entertain our many residents and visitors. Crayton Cove, for years, has offered a niche that held on to that “Old Naples” feeling and the City Dock hosted numerous charter boats and is the gateway to activities on the water. This is the last month that Napoli on the Bay Pizzeria and The Phil Fisher/GuessFisher Galleries will be in their location in Crayton Cove as the building they are in is planned to be razed. It was our favorite location ever and fit the artwork that we were marketing to the public. The galleries will be taking a break, after forty years, from a “brick and mortar” location for six months and see what life brings. Holding onto our phone numbers and our internet connections such as websites and Instagram, we can be reached, but for now, the month of April, we are located at the intersection of Eighth Street South and Twelfth Avenue South by the flagpole on the Bay, where you can catch a snippet of what Naples was years ago. In fact, if we look around, we will notice that nature has created numerous plant sources for helping us along on our journey of life. Let’s take a look at some of these pantry must-haves: CINNAMON Is the most popular in holistic medicine for its effectiveness in treating diabetes and preventing heart disease. Dating back to Ancient Egypt, this legendary spice is derived from the inner layers of certain tree barks. Best used in its powdered form, cinnamon has amazing antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. It improves the body’s sensitivity to its own insulin, so in patients with insulin resistance (metabolic syndrome) it will help lower blood glucose. Cinnamon may also help to reduce blood pressure and elevate the good cholesterol HDL. For prevention and delicious taste, sprinkle it fresh on granola, oatmeal, hot cocoa, and baked apples and pears. Cinnamon can also be added to almost any kind of smoothie. If you are using cinnamon as medicine, do it under the doctor’s supervision because cinnamon derived from certain species of trees contains coumarin which may be toxic to the liver in large doses. Some supplement brands can also be contaminated with lead. FENNEL The seeds of this anise-smelling Mediterranean and Asian herb have well-recognized medicinal properties. One of its common holistic uses is for anti-spasmodic effect in intestinal C discomfort common in irritable bowel syndrome and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Studies suggest that fennel seeds can soothe chronic belly cramps and bloating in the majority of people who take them. Fennel also has estrogenlike properties on the cellular level, so adding fennel seeds to your diet may help with painful menstruation as well as age-related vaginal dryness symptoms in women. For prevention, you can use ground fennel seeds on grilled fish or meat, or any baked or sautéed vegetables. Check out Indian recipes on the web for the tastiest culinary expression of fennel goodness. If using it as a supplement, do so under physician supervision because an overdose of this anti-spasmodic may boomerang into the development of the “lazy gut.” GINGER Originally hailing from Southeast Asia, ginger is arguably the most popular medicinal spice on the planet. In fact, in India, ginger is used to help with pretty much everything including painful headaches. It is packed with gingerols—plant compounds that amp up the production of pain-numbing endorphins, dampen inflammation and relax scalp muscles to prevent painful spasms. Thanks to the same active ingredient, ginger also treats nausea as effectively as motion sickness medications, so it’s a great help for a hangover, post-chemo nausea, or a pregnancy morning sickness. I love using Healing with Herbs and Spices by DR KOGAN Concierge Holistic Internal Medicine Dr. Kogan is a Concierge Holistic Internal Medicine doctor in Naples. For more information, please visit CustomLongevity.com or call 239.676.6883. it in my arthritis patients because due to its anti-inflammatory properties, ginger can help quell the pain and swelling in the joints. For prevention, peel, grate and cook with sauces, glazes, and marinades for a mellow flavor. Check out the web for traditional Asian stir-fry chicken, shrimp, or vegan recipes. When using it as a medicine, consult with a physician because an overdose could lead to bleeding and abdominal discomfort. MINT/PEPPERMINT An easy-to-grow herb that has earned its global appeal for helping with digestive upsets, balancing acid production in the stomach, and alleviating bloating, nausea, and stomach cramps. Peppermint has more than 100 local names in different countries and is a main ingredient for antiviral menthol rubs and muscle pain menthol patches. You can enjoy peppermint’s refreshing vibe by adding it raw to your smoothies, yogurts, or salads. You can also heat it lightly in olive oil before drizzling it over grilled fish or meat. 36 | Old Naples News April 2023 he 54-Twin Villa community introduces a much-needed, smaller enclave of new homes to southeast Naples. The developers are proud to introduce a well-priced, new home opportunity in a low-key part of Naples where there is still a quiet place to grow. Its Whitaker Road location offers endto-end, big sky views unimpeded by any signage or structure taller than its palm trees and flag poles. Jasper has three floorplans to choose from, any two can be combined in the Twin Villa format, but the Colorado—its only two-story unit—can only be built around Jasper’s own water feature. Very private landscaped orientations are available, its statement exteriors come to life in high contrast, smooth stucco charcoal finishes balanced by the calming tones of cashmere-rich beige. The finishing touches are now being added to its gated, pool and outdoor living amenity, which includes barbeque grilling, dining area and fire pit settings. Phase Two Villas are now under construction, all featuring Jasper’s signature side-entry floorplans that open into the main living area at its widest point for a spacious first impression and enduring curb appeal. High ceilings, eight-foot stack-back slider doors and open-space great room floorplans enhance a sense of comfortable roominess throughout each unit. All villas include attached, single-car garages. Relatively low fees include structure insurance, water, internet and community landscaping and maintenance, and have become a strong selling asset. Jasper presents the Dakota Villa floorplan, Jasper’s smallest two-bedroom unit at 1,264 square feet under air. It features a split-bedroom plan locating the master suite across the home from the second bedroom and includes direct access from its garage. Its high ceilings and wide kitchen island give it an open ambiance. It was built and finished entirely in Jasper’s standard features to illustrate both the high-level fittings included in Jasper Flats’ list price as well as its solid structural components. It also serves as a central selection resource for the vinyl plank and tile flooring, backsplash, quartz, hardware, and paint selections available to homeowners to personalize their homes. Since all aspects of Jasper Flats’ development are actively under construction, the showcase unit can be viewed by appointment and when accompanied by an appropriate agent. Arrangements can be completed from the contact information listed below. Jasper Flats is located on Whitaker Road, Naples, FL 34112, between County Barn Road and Santa Barbara Boulevard. 38 | Old Naples News April 2023 f you’re like many people, you’ve seen homes listed for sale “as-is.” But what does that mean, and what should you watch for if you’re interested in buying one? DON’T BUY AN “AS-IS” HOME UNTIL YOU READ THIS! When you buy a home “as-is,” you’re agreeing to purchase the home in the condition it’s currently in. That means the seller isn’t offering to make any repairs, even if something is damaged or broken, and you’re purchasing the home with the understanding that it’s up to you to make an informed decision. When you buy a home listed this way, you typically still have the right to have a professional home inspector come in, but it’s up to you to decide whether to purchase the home after checking out the inspector’s report. 5 THINGS TO WATCH FOR IN AN “AS-IS” HOME If a seller doesn’t allow an inspection, most REALTORS® would advise you to keep looking—even if you think the home is a great deal. There’s probably a reason that the seller doesn’t want you to hire a professional inspector! With that in mind, check out these five potential issues and red flags you should watch for when you’re interested in an “as-is” home: 1. The roof 2. The foundation 3. Major systems in the home (such as plumbing and electrical) 4. Additions to the home 5. Mold Here’s a closer look at each. And remember, though there may not be anything wrong with the home at all (some sellers sell “as-is” because the home is hopelessly outdated, not damaged), it’s worth checking out all these issues if you’re seriously considering purchasing a home that’s being Buying a Home As-Is by ALEXANDRA JANZ ALEXANDRA JANZ Broker Associate & Luxury Properties Specialist William Raveis-Florida, LLC 239.315.1079 | www.ajnaplesrealty.com FEBRUARY 2023 COMPARED TO FEBRUARY 2022 ALL DATA FROM THE NAPLES BOARD OF REALTORS® MLS –MARCH 8, 2023 OVERALL NAPLES MARKET STATISTIC Median I What to look out for sold “as-is.” #1: THE ROOF A typical asphalt roof lasts between 20 and 30 years. Then, the materials begin to degrade and aren’t as able to protect the home as well as they once did. If a seller put the home on the market “as-is,” you may want to have a specialized roof inspection done— roofs are expensive, and if you buy a property that needs a roof replacement, you could be looking at tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket. #2: THE FOUNDATION Foundation issues aren’t that common, but they do exist. When a seller puts a home on the market “as-is,” it’s probably worth having the foundation inspected. Sometimes, foundation problems manifest inside the home, two periods for example, windows and doors that don’t line up quite right, cracks in the walls and sloped floors can all indicate foundation problems. Like roofs, foundations are very expensive to fix. That means it’s probably in your best interest to know exactly what you’re getting into before you commit to a deal. #3: MAJOR SYSTEMS IN THE HOME When you buy a home “as-is,” it’s a good idea to have all its major systems checked out. That includes plumbing, electrical, and even the HVAC system. If you don’t have a professional inspect them now, you could end up spending quite a bit of money making repairs shortly after you’ve sealed the deal. #4: ADDITIONS TO THE HOME Sometimes, when people add on to their homes, they don’t get the appropriate permits from the city or county. When you are making a purchase, you need to ensure that any additions were properly permitted. You also need to find out who performed the work to create the additions, because you need to know whether they’re up to code or may have construction issues. #5: MOLD Mold can be incredibly dangerous to your health, so it’s important to have a home checked for its presence. You can ask a seller if they know whether there’s mold growth in the home, you can look for it yourself, or hire a professional to check things out for you. In any case, do your due diligence to determine whether there’s mold in any home.

This upcoming season is dedicated to building community, instilling laughs, and looking to the future. In the next few months, The Naples Players will begin an exciting $20 million renovation on their Fifth Avenue Building. From July 5 to July 23, 2023, The Naples Players will present the epic musical, The Hunchback of Notre Dame at the Community School of Naples, home to TheatreZone. What makes a monster and what makes a man? This timeless retelling of Victor Hugo’s renowned novel, partnered with Disney & Alan Menken’s sweeping score and Stephen Schwartz’s moving lyrics, demonstrates the power of love, acceptance, and what it means to be a hero. The teen company will then perform The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Teen from August 4th to August 6th, 2023. Next, A.R. Gurney masterfully weaves together 60 different characters from different families, time periods, and backgrounds in the second show of the season, The Dining Room. Each of these pieces brings life, laughter, and togetherness to the place where families gather: The Dining Room. Catch this classic family comedy from October 4-22 in McSpadden Hall at Naples United Church of Christ. Celebrate the holidays in style with Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, playing November 1-19, in McSpadden Hall at Naples United Church of Christ. Two years after Mr. Darcy sweeps Elizabeth Bennet off her feet in “Pride and Prejudice,” the Bennet family is celebrating Christmas at Pemberley, the Darcy residence. When an unexpected visitor joins the celebrations, the sisters are forced to change their perspectives on life, love, and their role in society. For a limited time (November 9 - 19) the jukebox musical, The Marvelous Wonderettes, will be performing in Beverly Hall at Naples United Church of Christ. This show uses popular songs from the 1950s and 60s to tell the life and love stories of four friends—from senior prom to their 10-year reunion. Featuring nostalgic hits such as “Lollipop,” “Dream Lover,” “Stupid Cupid,” “It’s in His Kiss,” and “Heatwave,” this comedic musical will have audiences laughing, crying, and singing in their seats! For two nights only, celebrate Christmas in Cambier Park with It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, on December 8, and 9. This beloved American holiday classic comes to captivating life as a live 1940s radio broadcast. With the help of an ensemble that brings a few dozen characters to the stage, the story of idealistic George Bailey unfolds as he considers ending his life on one fateful Christmas Eve. From January 10-28, 2024, in McSpadden Hall at Naples United Church of Christ will be Lauren Gunderson’s classic play, Harvey. In this show, friendship comes in all shapes and sizes— at least, that’s what 47-year-old Elwood P. Dowd and his very best friend, Harvey, believe. The only challenge? Harvey is an invisible, 6-foot-tall rabbit. Made popular by the movie starring Jimmie Stewart, follow the duo in the hilarious Pulitzer Prize-winning show about loyalty, friendship, and acceptance. The Fantasticks, performing from January 18 - 28, 2024, in Beverly Hall at Naples United Church of Christ, is the longest-running musical in the world, and with good reason: at the heart of its breathtaking poetry and subtle theatrical sophistication is a purity and simplicity that transcends barriers. From February 14 - March 3, 2024, in McSpadden Hall at Naples United Church of Christ, The Naples Players will highlight local talent in the form of the laugh-outloud comedy, Laugh, Cry, Pee, Repeat! From local playwrights, Patti Caroli, Carole Fenstermacher, and Natalie King comes this uproarious comedy about womanhood, aging, and everything in between! No topic is off the table as these women tell it like is, T

42 | Old Naples News April 2023 and was, and should be. From March 13 - April 7, 2024, The Naples Players will reopen the Fifth Avenue building with the Mel Brooks classic musical, The Producers, presented on the newly-renovated Kizzie Hall stage (previously Blackburn Hall) by Lake Michigan Credit Union. Mel Brooks' laugh-out-loud spectacle follows a Broadway producer and his accountant, who masterminded a scheme to produce Broadway's biggest flop and exploit their investors. But when the show is an accidental smash hit, the two scramble to put it together, finding themselves in one hilarious snafu after another. To complete the season, The Play That Goes Wrong will be presented on the Kizzie Hall stage from May 1 - 26, 2024. The Play That Goes Wrong welcomes you to the opening night of The Murder at Haversham Manor where things are quickly going from bad to utterly disastrous. With an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead, and actors who trip over everything (including their lines), it’s “TONS OF FUN FOR ALL AGES” (HuffPost) and “COMIC GOLD” (Variety) – sure to bring down the house! CEO/Artistic Director, Bryce Alexander, says, “This is an exciting year for The Naples Players and our community. Not only breaking ground on our renovation but continuing to serve our community as we build a new home. We have chosen a season that reflects our current state of celebrating where we come from while anticipating where we will go, and we hope audiences feel that too.” The Naples Players are also pleased to announce their education season! From June 23 - 25, 2023, Into the Woods, Jr. will be presented in McSpadden Hall at Naples United Church of Christ. Be careful what you wish for, as Stephen Sondheim’s and James Lapine’s cockeyed fairytale comes to life in this adaptation of their groundbreaking, Tony Awardwinning musical. Into the Woods JR. features all your favorite characters — Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk) and the Witch—in this lyrically rich retelling of classic Brothers Grimm fables. From July 28 - 30 in McSpadden Hall at Naples United Church of Christ comes the classic musical, Beauty and the Beast, Jr. Based on the original Broadway production that ran for over thirteen years and was nominated for nine Tony Awards, and the Academy Award-winning motion picture, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR. is a fantastic adaptation of the story of transformation and tolerance. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR. features some of the most popular songs ever written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice. During the 2023-2024 Season, The Naples Players will also feature new plays by their Readers Theatre program. A Source of Innocent Merriment (October 8), A Day Without Laughter is a Day Wasted (November 12), Annual New Play Festival ( January 21, 2024), and Love is a Tenuous Adventure (April 14, 2024). If interested in auditioning for any of The Naples Players’ productions, please keep an eye on their website NaplesPlayers.org for more information. Each main stage production will feature a Red Carpet Opening Night outside the theater with local sponsors, vendors, and entertainment for patrons and passersby to enjoy. Sensory-friendly performances will be available for select productions and announced at a later date. Season tickets will be on sale at TNP Box Office beginning February 22nd. Season Ticket holders to Season 70 get the first choice of seats in the renovated Kizzie Theatre. Please note that KidzAct performances go on sale on April 1, 2023. 44 | Old Naples News April 2023 f the Swedish birthday candle industry is on its toes, 2023 will be a flaming hot year indeed. The capital city of Stockholm marks enough anniversaries and royal Jubilees this year to ensure a pleasant early retirement for the whole candle industry. The Royal Opera celebrates 250 years. City Hall, famous for the Nobel Prize banquet each December and some of the world’s most spectacular ceremonial halls, turns 100. The Nordic Museum, Nordiska museet, turns 150. Köpmannagatan, the oldest named street, just turned 700. And last (but most important to some), ABBA The Museum, the pride and joy of Swedes and disco-era music fans worldwide, is ten years old. Plus, it’s His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustav’s Golden Jubilee, marking 50 years on the throne, and the 500th anniversary of Swedish sovereignty. It’s a glorious time to visit Stockholm. So, let’s start with your shoes. You’ll need the most excellent, cushiest walking shoes you can afford, because walking and gawking (and often standing and gawking), is a thing in this artful, intellectual, powerful, and stunningly beautiful city that dates to Medieval and Viking times. The official City of Stockholm is an archipelago of 14 islands connected by 57 bridges. Even if you grab a day ticket for one of the hop-on/hop-off bus or boat tours (highly recommended to get your bearings), the lure of the waterfront promenades, city parks and medieval buildings cry out for a stroll. Here are some suggestions for a spring/summer visit. GAMLA STAN: ANOTHER CENTURY, ANOTHER BIRTHDAY The heart of the city is Gamla Stan (Old Town). Merchant Street, at a mere 700, is young by Stockholm standards. Enhanced by the tiny kafés, boutiques HAPPY BIRTHDAYS, STOCKHOLM I by KAREN T. A must-see is the massive, violent and a bit bawdy wooden sculpture of St. George and the Dragon inside the circa 1279 Great Cathedral, Storkyrkan. A bronze replica stands outside on Merchant Street. BRING YOUR OPERA GLASSES The majestic Royal Opera House overlooking Gustav Adolf's Square was built in 1773. Its choir is one of the world's oldest professional ensembles. City Hall’s inauguration in 1923 took place on a Saturday when weddings are typically performed there. But it also happened to fall on Midsummer Eve, which was oh, so romantic. Because this year’s Midsummer Day, June 24, falls on Saturday, it may be the biggest wedding day in City Hall history. The price tag for your private five-minute civil ceremony in the palatial Blue Hall where the Nobel banquets are held? $95! Imagine the photo ops! cityhall.stockholm If you’re not in a marrying mood on Midsummer Day you may want to head over to Skansen (the world’s largest outdoor living history museum) to wear your flower crown and perhaps dance around the maypole. skansen.se FOR VIKING AFICIONADOS The fearsome-looking warship Vasa–the most powerfully armed warship in the world when she set sail in 1628—came to an untimely end in a strong wind just minutes into her maiden voyage. Her humiliation was witnessed by thousands of locals and foreign dignitaries. Luckily for the millions of Vikingophiles around the world, her hull was salvaged largely intact, and she now holds court in the Vasa Museum, just a stroll from the Nordic Museum, with artifacts, interactive exhibits and a fascinating 11-minute ride back in time. Expect to see evidence of the Viking culture everywhere: in garden sculptures, historic buildings, art and pottery. Greta, now 20, was named TIME’s 2019 Person of the Year and was twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. She plans to strike every Friday until Sweden fulfills its Paris Agreement obligations. fridaysforfutre.org STAND WITH THE ROYAL GUARD Well, behind the ropes, of course. Wherever I travel in the world, if there’s a royal palace, there’s likely a guard ceremony. If it’s public, I try not to miss it. Stockholm’s daily 40-minute ceremony, accompanied in warm seasons by the Swedish Armed Forces military marching band, doesn’t disappoint. The Royal Palace is the official residence of the king, with more than 600 rooms, the royal armory, and five museums displaying royal costumes, coronation carriages, and artifacts, including Queen Kristina’s silver throne. AND FINALLY: WALK IN DANCE OUT! No need to bring your disco boots or rhinestone-jeweled silver jumpsuit to ABBA: The Museum. The state-of-the-art interactive museum honoring Sweden’s most famous music artists of all time has it all set up for you to (virtually) jump on the giant hologram stage, along with (virtual) Björn, Benny, Frida and Agnetha in the outrageously fabulous ABBA costume of your choice, and then download your performance to wow your friends back home. Before you go, be sure to practice your Dancing Queen moves and watch the movie Mamma Mia, featuring ABBA’s best songs. abbathemuseum.com VISITSTOCKHOLM.COM TOP: Greta Thunberg (bottom row center) protesting at Parliament House January 2023 BOTTOM LEFT: Cafes and pastry shops in Gamla Stan are popular spots to enjoy traditional Swedish Fika (coffee break) CENTER: Opera House BOTTOM RIGHT: A trolley banner lures visitors to ABBA The Museum. 48 | Old Naples News April 2023 Defense against Diabetes starts with you by LORNA FEDELEM, MD Call and schedule a complimentary meet and greet with Dr. Fedelem. 9150 Galleria Ct., Suite 200, Naples, FL 34109 www.LornaFedelemMD.com | 239.580.6390 efeat Diabetes Month is observed in April each year. It is projected that around 643 million people worldwide will be living with diabetes by 2030. We need to raise awareness about the preventable nature of Type Two diabetes and focus on the lifestyle and dietary changes that can be implemented to minimize the chances of contracting the disease. DIABETES FAQS What are the three Ps of diabetes? The three Ps of diabetes are polyuria, polydipsia, and polyphagia. “Poly” means many, therefore this refers to excess urination, excess thirst/drinking water, and excess hunger/eating. These can all be red flags of having undiagnosed diabetes. Can anyone get Type Two diabetes? Yes. Type Two diabetes is an autoimmune disorder with multiple risk factors, including obesity, genetics, and a sedentary lifestyle. Metabolic syndrome raises the risk even more. Is fatigue a symptom of diabetes? The most common symptoms of diabetes are frequent urination, increased thirst, and persistent fatigue. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? 1. Visit your doctor for a blood test. Diabetes is easy to detect, and with preventative medicine a simple blood test for a hemoglobin A1C can diagnose pre-diabetes and allow us to take measures to prevent the actual onset of diabetes with diet modifications, weight loss, and sometimes medication. 2. Skip the carbs—eat a Mediterranean Diet. A balanced diet high in protein and vegetables is a proven way of minimizing your chances of diabetes. French fries and other carbohydrate-dense food groups blind our taste buds and load us up with unnecessary calories that can lead to obesity. 3. Get active and be outside. Exercise has an immediate impact on our body by lowering our blood glucose and strengthening insulin sensitivity throughout our body. Taking a brisk walk after a meal triggers the uptake of glucose from our bloodstream and lowers an elevated blood sugar. 4 FACTS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT DIABETES 1. It’s avoidable. Knowing your risk factors can drastically decrease your chance of getting Type Two diabetes. Make an appointment to discuss this with your PCP. 2. It’s on the rise. Type Two diabetes patients in the U.S. have almost doubled in the last 20 years. 3. Associated diseases. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, amputation, kidney failure, and strokes. 4. It’s not just a “sugar thing.” The main risk factors of diabetes are genetics and obesity, not only the daily consumption of too much sugar. UNDERSTANDING DIABETES IS IMPORTANT 1. Live a healthy lifestyle. In my practice I promote the prevention of diabetes by arming my patients with comprehensive knowledge about nutrition and exercise. Consuming fresh and unprocessed food and picking up a workout of your choice not only reduces your risk factors but is also key to living a healthy lifestyle. 2. New trends. Hemoglobin A1C control and weight management are critical for diabetics and pre-diabetics. There are new drugs that can help achieve these goals. Talk to your doctor today but beware of clinics offering weekly injections of compounded semaglutide for weight loss. Endocrinologists and Obesity Medicine Specialists, like me, are very much against this practice due to safety and quality concerns. D
