Heaven Stem 5 Combinations

5 Combinations are another type of Heaven Stem relationship, aside from the
Generating and Controlling Cycles. Each combination gives a di erence of 5, such as
{H1 & H6}, {H2 & H7}, {H3 & H8}, {H4 & H9} and {H5 & H10}, which resulted the 5
Combinations.
After a combination, the original stem & branch element will be changed and this is
known as “Combine and Form” [he hua].
[Jia H1] combines with [Ji H6] to form Earth.
[Yi H2] combines with [Geng H7] to form Metal.
[Bing H3] combines with [Xin H8] to form Water.
[Ding H4] combines with [Ren H9] to form Wood.
[Wu H5] combines with [Gui H10] to form Fire.
Where Yin meets Yang in 5 Combinations, one is Yin Heaven Stem and the other is Yang
Heaven Stem, their elements are always in control of each other and they will form
another element once combined.

A. The combination only applied with neighboring pillar.

There are 4 pillars of Heaven Stem in [Ba Zi] and the combinations of neighboring pillars
can be hour with day Heaven Stems, the day with month Heaven Stems and month
with year Heaven Stems. It is not possible to combine distant Heaven Stems that are
separated by a pillar.

 

B. Requires an element in Earth Branch month to
initiate a combination.

Whether a Heaven Stem combination can be formed or not, will depend on whether is
there an initiator element (hidden heaven stem) available in the month Earth Branch.
If the Earth Branch month has a similar element, the process of “combine and form” is
possible.

If [Jia H1] combines with [Ji H6] Heaven Stem and the Earth Branch month (hidden
heaven stem) is Earth, the formation of Earth will be able to take place. After this
“combine and form” process, the original Heaven Stem element will change to the
element of the Earth Branch month.

Example: If the self element is [Yi H2], Heaven Stem month is [Bing H3] and Heaven Stem
year is [Xin H8], they will combine to form Water.  If Earth Branch month is [Zi E1] Water
and the Hidden Heaven Stem is [Gui H10], the combination will be initiated by the Earth
Branch month so that Water will be able to “combine and form”. After “combining and
forming” the Heaven Stem month [Bing H3] and Heaven Stem year [Xin H8], its elements
will be changed to [Gui H10]. This is an Indirect Resource [Bian Yin] of the self element.

Example: Self element is [Ding H4], Heaven Stem hour is [Ren H9], Earth Branch month
is [Yin E3] and Hidden Heaven Stem is [Jia H1]. The combination of [Ding H4] and [Ren
H9] will take place to form Wood, as initiated by the Earth Branch month, so the
“combine and form” process is completed. The nal element is Yang Wood [Jia H1],
which is a Direct Resource [Zheng Yin] of the self element.

C. “Combine and Cannot Form”

When the combination between 2 neighboring pillars produces a formed element that

can be controlled by the element of Earth Branch month, the process of “combine and

form” cannot be completed, therefore this is a “combined but not formed” process. In

Earth Branch Six Combinations

Earth Branch 6 Combinations are formed with a Yin and a Yang and are paired based on
the position on the 24 Mountains arrangement.
[Zi E1] combines with [Chou E2] to form Earth.
[Yin E3] combines with [Hai E12] to form Wood.
[Chen E5] combines with [You E10] to form Metal.
[Wu E7] combines with [Wei E8] to form Fire.
[Si E6] combines with [Shen E9] to form Water.
[Mao E4] combines with [Xu E11] to form Fire.
As the Earth Branches are being paired for the 6 combinations, some pairs are
generating each other while some are controlling each other.
The combinations of Earth Branches exclude the Hidden Heaven Stems, therefore they
are purely Earth Branch combinations.

A. The Earth Branches must be side by side with each other in order to “combine and
form”. If they are separated by a pillar, there is no combination.
 
B. There must be a certain Heaven Stems to be available for the Earth Branches to
“combine and form”.
For [Zi E1] to combine [Chou E2] to form Earth, must have HS of [Wu H5] or [Ji H6].
For [Yin E3] to combine [Hai E12] to form Wood, must have HS of [Jia H1] or [Yi H2].
For [ChenE5] to combine [YouE10] to form Metal, must have HS of [GengH7] or [XinH8].
For [Wu E7] to combine [Wei E8], [Mao E4] or [Xu E11] to form Fire, must have HS of
[Bing H3] or [Ding H4].
For [Si E6] to combine [Shen E9] to form Water, must have HS of [Ren H9] or [Gui H10].
 
C. If Heaven Stem does not have the relevant element to allow Earth Branch to “form”,
the process can only “combine and cannot form”, so the Earth Branch remains its
original element and does not changed.
If there is a “combine and form” process, the Earth Branch element and the [Shi Shen]
10 Deities will change to its formed element. For example, when [Si E6] and [Shen E9]
“combine and form” Water, and the Earth Branches of [Si E6] and [Shen E9] will change
and become Water for analysis.

The Effect of “Combine and Form”

A. The original Earth Branch is a favourable star, but after “combine and form” process,
becomes an unfavourable star.
 
B. The original Earth Branch is an unfavourable star, but after “combine and form”
process, becomes a favourable star.
 
C. The original Earth Branch is a favourable star, but after “combine and cannot form”
process becomes an unfavourable star. As it “cannot form”, the favourable star is
discounted. When the Heaven Stem element arrives during Year or Luck Cycle, only
then they will “combine & form”. The favourable star will become the unfavourable
star and a disaster can happen.
 
D. The original Earth Branch is an unfavourable star, but after “combine and cannot
form” process becomes a favourable star. As it “cannot form”, the unfavourable star is
discounted.  When the Heaven Stem element arrives during the year or luck cycle, only
then they will “combine and form”. The unfavourable star will become the favourable
star and a disaster can disappear.

Seasonal or Directional Combinations & 3 Combination

Seasonal or Directional Combinations

Base on the 12 Earth Branches in the 24 Mountains represents 4 directions.
[Zi E1]=North, [Wu E7]=South, [Mao E4]=East and [You E10]=West are the 4 main
directions.
North, South, East, West are 4 directions.  Each direction represents 3 earth branches.
Therefore, the 12 Earth Branches are distributed to 4 directions.
[Hai E12], [Zi E1] and [Chou E2] at North are directionally combined to form Water.
[Yin E3], [Mao E4] and [chen E5] at East are directionally combined to form Wood.
[Si E6], [Wu E7] and [Wei E8] at South are directionally combined to form Fire.
[Shen E9], [You E10] and [Xu E11] at West, are directionally combined to form Metal.

3 combinations of [Shen E9], [Zi E1] and [Chen E5] form Water.

3 combinations of [Hai E12], [Mao E4] and [Wei E8] form Wood.

3 combinations of [Yin E3], [Wu E7] and [Xu E11] form Fire.

3 combinations of [Si E6], [You E10] and [Chou E2] form Metal.

 

Apart from the 3 Combinations, a meeting of all the 4 Earth of [Chen E5], [Xu E11],
[Chou E2] and [Wei E8] results a combination to form Earth.

3 combinations are related to the 12 Stages of Life Cycle through [Chang Sheng] Birth,
[Di Wang] Prosperity Peak and [Mu] Grave.

[Shen E9], [Zi E1] and [Chen E5] combine to form Water, hence Water is described as
Birth at [Shen E9], Prosperity Peak at [Zi E1] and Grave at [Chen E5].

[Hai E12], [Mao E4] and [Wei E8] combine to form Wood, hence Wood is described as

Birth at [Hai E12], Prosperity Peak at [Mao E4] and Grave at [Wei E8].  

[Yin E3], [Wu E7] and [Xu E11] combine to form Fire, hence Fire is described as Birth at

[Yin E3], Prosperity Peak at [Wu E7] and Grave at [Wei E8].

[Si E6], [You E10] and [Chou E2] combine to form Metal, hence Metal is described as
Birth at [Si E6], Prosperity Peak at [You E10] and Grave at [Xu E11].

Cycle

[Yin E3], [Shen E9], [Si E6] and [Hai E12] are the birthplaces for Fire, Water, Metal and
Wood respectively, therefore they are named as 4 Births.
[Zi E1], [Wu E7], [Mao E4] and [You E10] are the prosperity peaks for Water, Fire, Wood,
and Metal respectively, therefore they are named as 4 Peaks.
[Chen E5], [Xu E11], [Chou E2] and [Wei E8] are the graves for Water, Fire, Metal, and
Wood respectively, therefore they are named as 4 Graves.
 
3 Combinations can also be determined on their Hidden Heaven Stems basis.
Hidden Heaven Stem of [Shen E9] is [Ren H9] Water while Hidden Heaven Stem of [Zi E1]
and [Chen E5] is [Gui H10] Water, therefore [Shen E9], [Zi E1] and [Chen E5] are
combined to form Water.
Hidden Heaven Stem of [Hai E12] is [Jia H1] Wood while Hidden Heaven Stem of [Mao E4]
and [Wei E8] is [Yi H2] Wood, therefore [Hai E12], [Mao E4] and [Wei E8] are combined to
form Wood.
Hidden Heaven Stem of [Yin E3] is [Bing H3] Fire while Hidden Heaven Stem of [Wu E7]
and [Xu E11] is [Ding H4] Fire, therefore [Yin E3], [Wu E7] and [Xu E11] are combined to
form Fire.
Hidden Heaven Stem of [Si E6] is [Geng H7] Metal while Hidden Heaven Stem of [You E10]
and [Chou E2] is [Xin H8] Metal, therefore [Si E6], [You E10] and [Chou E2] are combined
to form Metal.

The Principle of Directional Combinations and “Form”

Directional Combinations and “Form”

Directional Combination requires all the 3 Earth Branches involved to be present,
hence there is no combination when lacking of any branch. However, the combination
does not constrain the Earth Branches to be arranged in a continuous sequence.  Even if
they are separated by another pillar, they can still be combined provided all the 3 Earth
Branches are around.
For Directional Combinations and 3 Combinations, the element existed after the
combination must be similar to the element of Heaven Stem to e ect a “combine and
form” process.
 
 
[Hai E12], [Zi E1] and [Chou E2] are Directional Combination of Water;
[Shen E9], [Zi E1] and  [Chen E5] are 3 Combination of Water;
There must be a [Ren H9] or [Gui H10] in Heaven Stem for Water to be formed.
 

[Yin E3], [Mao E4] and [Chen E5] are Directional Combination of Wood;
[Hai E12], [Mao E4], [Wei E8] are 3 Combination of Wood;
There must be a [Jia H1] or [Yi H2] in Heaven Stem for Wood to be formed.
 

[Si E6], [Wu E7] and [Wei E8] are Directional Combination of Fire;
[Yin E3], [Wu E7] and [Xu E11] are Three Combination of Fire;
There must be a [Bing H3] or [Ding H4] in Heaven Stem for Fire to be formed.
 

[Shen E9], [You E10] and [Xu E11] are Directional Combination of Metal;
[Si E6], [You E10] and [Chou E2] are 3 Combination of Metal;
There must be a [Geng H7] or [Xin H8] in Heaven Stem for Metal to be formed.

Half Combination & [Ba Zi] Analysis: Strong and Weak Self Element

Half Combination

Half Combination can only occur in 3 Combinations, which means that only 2 Earth
Branches are combined, but 1 of the Earth Branches must be the “4 Peak”, it can be
either [Zi E1], [Wu E7], [Mao E4] and [You E10].

 

   
[Shen E9] & [Zi E1] and [Zi E1] & [Chen E5] are the half combination of Water.

[Hai E12] & [Mao E4] and [Mao E4] & [Wei E8] are the half combination of Wood.

[Yin E3] & [Wu E7] and [Wu E7] & [Xu E11] are the half combination of Fire.

[Si E6] & [You E10] and [You E10] & [Chou E2] are half combination of Metal.

Strong and Weak Self Element

The number of Ruling and Opposition Parties can be used to determine whether the
self element is strong or weak. But its strength is a ected by di erent pillars, at such
elements in a month pillar are stronger compared to other pillars.  The combination of
Heaven Stem and Earth Branch has an e ect on the strength of self too.
Self element is considered strong if the Ruling Party is strong & the Opposition Party is
weak.
Self element is considered weak if the Opposition Party is strong & Ruling Party is weak.

The technique to decide the strengths of the self element is to determine the availability
of supports ranked in the following order:-
A. Season support.
B. Root support.
C. Parallel support.

A self element is strong or weak depend on the Season, Root & Parallel supports.
It is a strong self element if out of 3 pillars, 2 pillars have the supports.
It is a weak self element if out of 3 pillars, 2 pillars do not have the supports.
When the Ruling Party & Opposition Party has similar strengths, even having 2
supports may not be considered as a strong self, or not having 2 supports may not be
considered as weak self element.

 

Determination of a Season Support

The month of birth for a self element is referred as Season.
If the element “Ruling Party” at the month pillar earth branch, which is “the Season”
supported the self element, it is regarded as “Season” support.
If the element “Opposition Party” at the month pillar earth branch, which is “the
Season” does not support the self element, it is regarded as “No Season Support”.
Example: If [Jia H1] or [Yi H2] self element born in a Resource “Ruling” month, that is
[Hai E12] or [Zi E1] month, or born in the a Competitor “Ruling” month, that is [Yin E3]
or [Mao E4] month, the self element has the Season support.
Example: If [Jia H1] or [Yi H2] self element, born in a Wealth “Opposition” month of
[Chen E5], [Xu E11], [Chou E2] or [Wei E8] month; or born in an Authority “Opposition”
month of [Shen E9] or [You E10] month; or born in the Intelligence “Opposition” month
of [Si E6] or [Wu E7] month, the self element has no support from the Season.

Determination of a Root Support

A [Ba Zi] consists of 4 Earth Branches. Without considering the Earth Branch month,
there are 3 Earth Branches that can provide Root support.
If these 3 Earth Branches belong to Ruling Party or 2 Ruling Parties with 1 Opposition
Party, the self element has Root support.
If all the 3 Earth Branches belong to Opposition Party or 2 Opposition Parties with 1
Ruling Party, the self element has No Root support.

Determination of a Parallel Support

As a [Ba Zi] consists of 4 Heaven Stems. Without considering the Heaven Stem at Day
Pillar, there are another 3 Heaven Stems that can provide Parallel support.
If all these 3 Heaven Stems are Ruling Party or 2 Ruling Parties with 1 Opposition Party,
the self element is considered as having a Parallel support.
If all the 3 Heaven Stems are Opposition Party or 2 Opposition Parties with 1 Ruling
Party, the self element is considered as having No Parallel support.

The Accuracy on the Strength of Self Element

The Accuracy of the Strength of Self
Element

To determine whether a [Ba Zi] is strong or weak, it is based on the Season, Root and
Parallel supports and the 5 principles of strength.
Although there are rules and formulas to determine the strength, it may not be accurate,
so it is a di cult task.
This is due to the hidden elements in the Earth Branches which may cause the elemental
strength to change and thus give a di erent interpretation.
Therefore, in a fate and luck analysis, we must nd out whether if the year is good or
bad and then determine whether it corresponds with the favorable and unfavorable
elements for an accurate analysis.
For example, if the self element is strong and the Opposition Party is favorable
element, it should tally with the experience of previous years when the Opposition
element arrived and whether the previous luck was good, then it's correct to analyze the
future year luck.

4 Di erent Category

4 Different Category

Normal Category

A [Ba Zi] has both Ruling Party and Opposition Parties, therefore self element is either
strong or weak.

Special Category

A [Ba Zi] only has either Ruling Party or Opposition Party, therefore self element can be
either too strong or too weak.
If self element is too strong, it is considered as a Dominant Type [zhuan wang ge].
If self element is too weak, it is considered as a Passive Type [cong ge].

Dominant Category

A [Ba Zi] with only Ruling elements with a very strong self element is considered under a
Dominant Category [zhuan wang ge]
If Bazi of Ruling elements with only 1 HS or 1 EB of Opposition element, do not
have Root or star emerging from HS & has direct clash with neighouring element, it is
considered as a Fake Dominant Category [jia zhuan wang ge]

Passive Category

A [Ba Zi] with only Opposition elements and self element is very weak is considered a
Passive Category [cong ge]
If Bazi of Opposition elements with only 1 Ruling party either HS or EB, do not have Root
or star emerging from HS & has a direct clash with neighbouring element, it is
considered as Fake Passive Category [jia cong ge].

Favourable and Unfavourable Star| Mediating Star

Favourable And Unfavourable Star

Favourable and Unfavourable Stars are referred to as Ten Deities [Shi Shen].
A favourable star is an auspicious star for the self element.
An unfavourable star is an inauspicious star for the self element.
Example: a strong self element [Jia H1] has favourable stars for Intelligence such as
[Ding H3], [Wu E7], [Bing H3] and [Si E6] and also Wealth such as [Ji H6], [Chou E2], [Wei
E8], [Wu H5], [Chen E5] and [Xu E11].  If Year or Luck Cycle has these favourable stars,
the self has good luck.
When an unfavourable star arrives, one might encounter bad luck and disaster.
If both favourable and unfavourable stars arrive, self has an average luck.
Favourable and unfavourable stars can be found in the Year and Luck Cycles.
This is the theory of [Ba Zi] fate and luck analysis or fortune telling.

Mediating Star

There can be a control e ect whenever 10 Deities [Shi Shen] are having a separation
from another star.
Example: Without an Authority Star, Wealth star controls Resource Star. But when
Authority Star appears, it will act as a Mediating Star.
When a Mediating Star appeared in the Year and Luck Cycles, the Bazi will be a ected.

Favourable & Unfavourable Star In Normal | Dominant Category

Under the Normal Category, elements can either strengthen or weaken self element.

If self element is strong, Opposition Party is a favourable element.                                      If
self element is weak, Ruling Party is a favourable element.

When applying the Opposition Party rule, we must beware of the Authority Star.           
 If a strong self element is without any Resource and Authority is a favourable
element. If a strong self element is with Resource and Authority is an unfavourable
element.      If a weak self element is with Resource and Authority is a favourable
element.               If weak self element is without any Resource & Authority is an
unfavourable element.

 
Favorable and Unfavourable Stars In
Dominant Category

Dominant [Zhuan Wang] or Fake Dominant [Jia Zhuan Wang] category, the Ruling
element is too strong that the favorable star must follow it.  If against it, it will be an
unfavorable star.

The favorable star for Dominant category is similar to the Normal weak self element
category.  The favorable star is “Ruling Party” and unfavorable star is “Opposition
Party”

The Dominant category belongs to a rich and prosperous life, but must with the
support of the favorable star from Luck or Year cycle. It may have danger or disaster if
meet the unfavorable star from the year or luck cycle.

Passive Category

Passive [Cong Ge] or Fake Passive [Jia Cong] category, the opposition party is too
strong that the self element must follow it. Opposition element becomes a favorable
star and Ruling element is an unfavorable star.
In the passive category, if the opposition element has Intelligent, Wealth and
Authority, all this star will become it favorable one.
In the passive category, if opposition element only has Intelligent and Authority,
absent of Wealth star. The Intelligent will control or meet the Authority will result in
a legal dispute, loss of job, accident or relationship problem for female life.
The favorable star, opposition element (Intelligent, Wealth, Authority) of the passive
category must all be present to achieve fame, a prosperous and rich life.

How many combination groups of [Ba Zi] are possible?
[Jia H1 Zi E1] comprise 60 years, 1 year has 12 months, 1 month has 30 days, 1 day has 13
[shi chen] hours period, including a morning [Zi] and night [Zi]. Since 1 month has only
30 days and [Jia Zi] has 60 types, [Jia Zi] sequence will repeat after 120 years.
= 60 X 12 X 30 X 13 X 2 = 561,600 di erent types of combination.

The main focus points in Bazi Mastery are the analysis of strength, whether the self
element is strong or weak and the favourable stars.  Once the favorable stars are
determined, you will be able to identify and manage your luck each year.
