AUTUMN NGAHURU - NEWSLETTER 2023 MANAGERS MESSAGE Kia ora koutou Welcome to our first newsletter for 2023. It has been a tough year so far and the effects of Cyclone Gabrielle have been devastating. For those with dementia, mate wareware, there may be a heightened level of anxiety, confusion and stress at this time. If you need any support in understanding and coping with these changes, please call us on (07) 308 0525. Board Members Introducing our Board Members. Pictured from the left are Jeremy Bendall (Advisor), Pat Kane, Bryce Sheedy, Jenny Douthwaite (Chairperson) and Peter Hill. Watch this space! Noho ora mai Sue Cave, Manager
CARER SUPPORT MEETINGS Carer support meetings are free of charge and facilitated by an Alzheimer’s Navigator. We offer information and support specific to dementia and often arrange a guest speaker. Attending a meeting provides the opportunity to meet other carers, share knowledge and practical tips (that may not always be in a book!). The support group helps you to learn more about community resources available and assists you to be better prepared for the future. Save the date NOW VOLUNTEERS Our volunteers contributed nearly 500 hours of their time during the past six months! They are our Heroes. Our Volunteers have folded over 500 newsletters, visited people with dementia, given carers a break, helped with fundraising, market stalls and events. If you can donate a little of your time to help, we would like to hear from you. We provide you with training and you will mix and mingle with kind-hearted people who want to make a difference in our community. If you want to know more about volunteering with Alzheimers EBOP please phone Talia on (027)3827299. MENTAL HEALTH TIPS Did you know you can use your breathing to relax and destress? Box breathing is a simple and effective technique with powerful results that can significantly reduce your levels of stress and anxiety. How does one box breathe? … It’s super simple and with some practice, it can become even easier and automatic in times of heightened pressure. Here’s how to do it: 1️⃣ Breath in, slowly, for 4 seconds 2️⃣ Hold your breath, for 4 seconds 3️⃣ Exhale slowly, for 4 seconds 4️⃣ Hold at the end of the exhale for 4 seconds, before repeating We recommend sitting comfortably and supported with your feet on the floor. Close your eyes if you feel comfortable and use your nose for the inhale. Try to bring your focus to your breath and feel the air coming in and going out. Repeat the steps for up to 4 minutes or until you are feeling calmer. CONDOLENCES We extend our deepest sympathy to those who have lost a loved one recently. We would like to thank all the families who have requested donations to Alzheimer's EBOP to be made in lieu of flowers.
