Member’s Corner Nuakhai is the agricultural festival of people of Western Odisha. ‘Nua’ means new and ‘Khai’ means eating. ‘Anna’ is the centre of the whole universe. Therefore this navanna or nuakhai festival give much importance to anna with a special celebration. It is mostly observed in Sambalpur, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Balangir, Kalahandi, Deogarh and Sundergarh. It is observed on the day after Ganesh Chaturthi. It is not only a festival or a tradition but it is mainly concentrated on the worship of food grain or rice. After hard work throughout the year, the farmers become extremely happy when they see the golden crops in the paddy fields. The head of the family goes to collect the new crop one day before and performs special rituals and puja. The seniormost lady of the family receives the new crops and performs the rituals. On this occasion, cows and bullocks are also bathed and worshipped with special puja. This is an exhibition of gratitude and respect to domestic animals. Family deities at home are offered sweets like Manda pitha and khiri. Family members sit together and eat different varieties of food. The youngsters pay respect to their elders and the elders bless them. Though the celebration of Nuakhai has changed over the period of time, the main cause of this celebration is the spirit or the gratefulness that man has for Almighty for good harvest for the sustenance of life on the earth. Therefore, Nuakhai is a unique festival in the whole country where both tribal and non-tribals participate and bind them in the force of unity, cohesion and brotherhood and collective offering to Gods and Goddesses for all their blessings. -Abha Behera Compiled by: Rucha Kakkad Editor(2023-24)
