Though M&A will make companies stronger, consolidation in the same industry may have effects on competition within a market. Fewer participants might result in less competition in the same market; ultimately, this can affect the prices charged, any resultant product innovation, or the consumer's choice. Highly consolidated industries, therefore, mean consumers will end up paying higher prices because of reduced competition and businesses will have fewer suppliers to draw from or partners to work with.
