S. Rafti Centre for Insect Systematics, Department of Biology Sciences and Biotechnology, Faculty of Science and Technology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 43600 Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia. *E-mail: [email protected] Abstract : The Thysanoptera (Thrips) diversity of Sungai Menyala was surveyed during the expedition from 3-7 October 2022. A total of thirteen thrips species belonging to two suborders was recorded. Suborder Terebrantia is more abundant with 12 identified species while only two species, Peractinothrips peratus and Xylaplothrips sp. belong to suborder Tubulifera. The taxonomic characters and biological information of collected thrips are provided in this paper. Key words: Sungai Menyala, Thysanoptera, Negeri Sembilan. 5 1

Bird Count at Sungai Menyala Forest Reserve, Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan Vuthy Taing Malaysian Nature Society Negeri Sembilan-Malacca Branch [email protected] Abstract : The quick survey gives an overall assessment of the bird count at Sungai Menyala Forest Reserve and an invaluable insight into its biodiversity as an “island” forest. The survey revealed the presence of 33 species of birds. INTRODUCTION Sungai Menyala Forest reserve is a 1,280 hectares Dipterocarp Lowland Forest. It is surrounded by oil palm plantations, other forms of farming and residential area, making it an “island” forest. The noise pollution comes from an adjacent military firing range and the aeroplanes approaching landing to Kuala Lumpur’s International Airport (KLIA). Malaysia has 822 bird species with 100 families recorded. These include residents, migrants, vagrants and introduced species. In terms of conservation status, Malaysia has 63 bird species in the Threatened category, 109 species Near Threaten and 1 species with Data Deficient. The rest, 649 species, are of Least Concern. The objective of this rapid assessment is to get a snapshot of the bird biodiversity and to see if there are any vulnerable species in a small and isolated forest. 5 4
