2 The film BACK TO THE FUTURE is a 1985 American science fiction film directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Zemeckis, and Bob Gale. The idea for BACK TO THE FUTURE was conceived by Gale and Zemeckis in 1980 but the film was rejected more than 40 times by various studios because it was not considered raunchy enough to compete with the successful comedies of the era. However, BACK TO THE FUTURE turned out to be a critical and commercial success, earning $381.1 million to become the highest-grossing film of 1985 worldwide. I am thinking of this film, BACK TO THE FUTURE, as I am writing this message for our Parish Catholic Women’s League 50th Anniversary Celebration Magazine. It would be interesting to see how the CWL of Penampang actually started 50 years ago and what were the situations like (at that time) that had motivated the CWL to establish. I think it would also be thrilling to get to know those pioneers of the CWL; Rosenani Sogondu, Margeret Chan, Mathilda Molidu, Veronica Molidu and Nora Mobijohn among others. To experience what it was like then, of course, would be just a thought. To do that, we would need a time machine like the one invented by Dr. Emmett Brown in the film BACK TO THE FUTURE. However, even though it would not be possible to get to know exactly what happened back in 1973 when the Penampang CWL was first started, what we see today of the CWL is sufficient to convince us that it was indeed God’s plan for Penampang Parish, and in particular for the women in Penampang. The Penampang CWL has groomed a lot of dedicated leaders who are now actively involved in the parish. In addition to that, it has never failed to support the parish in many ways and at multiple-levels. The members helped, in particular, to raise fund to complete the Parish Cafeteria, a project which is now one of our prides in Penampang. They have been contributing their energy, time and talents in many ways including preparing meals for most (if not all) of our parish’s activities like the parish Family Day celebrations, Christmas celebration, priests’ anniversaries, seminars and recollections, and so on and so forth. I remember in particular that during the COVID 19 locked-down when there were no masses, no Sunday collections and everyone was on a tight budget, the Penampang CWL took turn cooking food for the priests in the rectory and the mission boarders as well. In fact, they have been always generous and ever ready to support the parish. Let this golden anniversary of the Penampang CWL be a celebration of five decades of dedication and love-driven service. I extend my heartiest congratulations to the CWL for this 50th anniversary of their establishment and thank you so much for being such an awesome ministry in the parish. I pray that many more women will be inspired to dedicate themselves to join the CWL “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” (James 1:17) Fr. 3 “Mary kept all these things in her heart.” (Luke 2,51) Dear Catholic Women’s league members, I am always grateful to you all during this season of Lent. All the activities you are serving in your respective positions and churches are “God saw how good it was” (Genesis 1:10). Starting from the history of the Old Testament, the history of the New Testament, and the history of all the churches after that, it seems that men dominate the activities in the church. But women also played a huge role. In particular, through the role of Mary, the mother of Jesus, we can realize the true spirit of humility and service. From the moment she conceived Jesus, Mary always humbly accepted everything. “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” (Luke 1,38) Despite Elisabeth's praise, Mary accepted everything as God's will humbly rather than proudly. “The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.” (Luke 1,49) Even at the moment of giving birth to Jesus, Mary did not complain despite the uncomfortable place. Also, at the moment of the consecration of Jesus in the temple, Mary accepted everything as God's will, even though she heard a message related to suffering from Simeon. Even when Mary lost and found the boy Jesus, rather than scolding her out loud, she “kept all these things in her heart” (Luke 2:51). Although it is not described in detail in the Gospel, Mary would have always been with Jesus even when Jesus was active with the 12 disciples in earnest, and Mary humbly served God's will. Even at the moment of Jesus' suffering on the way to the cross, Mary shared the suffering together and was always with Jesus even until the moment he died. Mary witnessed the moment of Jesus' resurrection and even the moment of his ascension, and from the first moment when Jesus came as a human until the end, she was always not far away. The Catholic Women's League members should imitate the most while serving in the church is Mary. Mary's role was that of a mother. The mother's role in the family is very important.
4 Through a mother's love, children can grow up joyful. The role of the Catholic Women's League is to fulfil the motherly role in the Church. It is important to fulfil the role of motherly love, not just preparing meals for church events. So, your service to the Church is not for your benefit but for the unity and peace of the Church. Your service in church is, in other words, service of love. Through your loving service, you can convey the love of Christ and the love of Mary to other faithful and significantly help priests in the Church. The reward for the service you performs in the Church can also be given on this earth, but the reward will be more significant later in the kingdom of God. I always thank you for your zealous service for the Church, and I hope that you will always imitate Mary's humility. “Mary kept all these things in her heart.” (Luke 2,51) Mary was always by Jesus' side, always enduring everything for the will of God, even though she could be angry, complain, grumble and gossip. Of course, the reality is that while we serve in the church, we cannot be humble and have patience due to the problem of our emotional control. But Mary, as a human being like us, has already shown us how to live humbly with a true heart for God through her life. So, I hope that our Catholic Women's League will always be able to follow the path that Mary walked while serving in the Church. “Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope.” (1Peter 3,15) I will always pray for your spiritual health and maturity. You will be able to serve with joy for the activities and growth of our church community according to the grace and special gifts that God already gives. “Rejoice in the Lord always. Rosenani Sogondu holding the post of Protem Chairlady. Since then, elections of office-bearers have been held periodically. Over the years, the population of Catholics in the Penampang Parish has steadily increased and since then, more outstation Churches and Chapels have been built. Bishop Emeritus John Lee, who was the Archbishop of Kota Kinabalu Diocese at that time, made Terawi a second parish in the Penampang district on 1st December, 2010. For the same reason, on 1st October 2014, Inobong was declared the third Parish by Archbishop John Wong. 35 Liga Wanita Zon Sugud telah ditubuhkan pada 22 Feb 1987 dengan disaksikan oleh Datin Patricia Leiking selaku Pengerusi Liga Wanita St Aloysius Limbanak pada tahun tersebut. Zon Sugud yang masih menggunakan bangunan Chapel St. Mathew, Sugud ketika itu adalah di bawah naungan Zon 6, St Aloysius Limbanak. Bangunan gereja baru Zon Sugud , Gereja Assumption of Our Lady, Sugud telah siap dibina dan mula digunakan pada tahun 2004. Pemilihan Ahli Jawatankuasa Liga Wanita dibuat mengikut tempoh yang telah ditetapkan dan berikut adalah senarai Ahli Jawatankuasa tertinggi Liga Wanita Zon Sugud dari tahun 1987 sehingga 2013. 37 Liga Wanita memainkan peranan penting dalam menyokong setiap aktiviti gereja. Liga Wanita Zon Sugud selain daripada melaksanakan program yang diaturkan di bawah kelolaan Jawatankuasa Pastoral, turut menjalankan banyak aktiviti lain sepanjang tahun. Lawatan di musim puasa (Lenten visit) ke rumah ahli Liga Wanita yang sudah uzur (4-5 Mac 2023) Program Father’s Day -19 Jun 2022 Menyampaikan Sumbangan kewangan kepada Liga Wanita yang ditimpa musibah kebakaran rumah.
38 Persembahan sempena Perayaan Hari Wanita sedunia peringkat Paroki Penampang (2019) Menghadiri Misa Kudus dan melawat Rev. Fr. Ned Columba Moujing di Chapel Katolik St. Martha of Beathney, Kundasang-7 Dec 2021 Lawatan Liga Wanita Zon Sugud ke Woori Jib di Kg Potuki, Penampang Liga Wanita Sugud menyediakan makanan sepanjang Program Belia Zon Sugud sempena “Hari Belia Sedunia” (2019)
39 Liga Wanita mengikuti rekoleksi sehari di St. Michael Penampang Liga Wanita turut serta dalam perayaan kaamatan pada tahun 2019 di dewan St. William Sukang Mabpai. Para Peserta Liga Wanita yang mengikuti kelas membuat lilin dari Cikgu Roselia Stanislaus di Dewan St. William Liga Wanita melawat late Fr. Alex dan Fr, Jimsy. Pelayanan Fr berdua menjadi kenangan termanis bersama kami dari Zon Sukang Mabpai.
