MSORSM MEMBERS SUCCESS STORY Associate Professor Dr. Zulkifli Mohd Nopiah Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Event Advisor, SciMath-in-R.Station No one expected the railway station to be a source for showcasing the practical applications of Science and Mathematics in real life, particularly for B40 students residing in Projek Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) areas. However, UKM has conducted an event called SciMath-in-R.Station which took place from December 16 to 18, 2023, at PPR Lembah Subang 2, Selangor. They harnessed the potential of this unconventional venue as a 'living platform' to immerse students in the tangible aspects of these subjects. By providing hands on activities and interactive demonstrations they gave participants the chance to explore the mathematical principles behind railway operations. Participants engaged in exciting experiments related to cubic functions, where participants modeled train passenger arrival at a railway station. Additionally, participants explored the world of acoustics by simulating strategies for reducing noise at a railway station using a scaled down model of the station. UKM goal was to make Science and Mathematics, specifically cubic functions and sound absorption, tangible and applicable to real-world scenarios, fostering a deeper understanding among the students.
