This theatre production is an attempt
to rede ne sensibilities both in form
and content. The play tries to create a
seamless narrative woven around a
solid core - ie Vaikam Mohammad
Basheer’s writing. The creative process
is to present Basheer on stage as an
actor and partic- ipant and hovering in
the air as an immortal storyteller.

Center for contemporary art depicts on the
stage, the legendary boxing hero Muhammad Ali.
This play will focus mainly in three areas his fight
against racism, his conversion to Islam and the
fight against US Government over Vietnam War.
The story unfolds his raise from a normal boy to
the great boxing champion and then to a model
humanist. This romantic heroic plot is set as a
rhythmic physical performance.

Powerful and immersive, Ali- beyond
the ring combines spoken word,
dance, boxing, Afro-American
singing, original footage of Ali’s
fights, animation, pyrotechnics and
1970s black pop music. This is a
semi- auto biographical exploration
of identity, race, religion and war, is
intentionally alienated to reflect
struggles of other regions with
special reference to contemporary
Indian realities.

and beyond the boxing ring against his
opponents who challenged and
marginalised the black identity. Play
captures the essence of his life, never
ending struggle against oppression.
The rigorous performance underline that
theatre is essentially a team work
without compromise. It will be marked in
future stake of Malayalam theatre’s
aspirations.
