holiday Professional Painter Ashana Flippo
invited me to collaborate on a fantastic fall
faerie that she had been itching to try. I am
always game for an adventure, especially
on such a fun creative project. As photog-
raphers we often get in creative ruts where
you just have to branch out and so some-
thing challenging and out of the norm.
Especially as wedding season is coming to a
close and you have been in an editing coma
where all the white dresses seem to blend
into the same beat of a beautiful never-end-
ing love story.

This type of a project was a first for Model
Meranda Wise, not that full body paint-
ing is a daily for anybody. She stood like
a champ in her skivvies for over 3 hours
while painter Ashana did her magic. Leav-
ing a trail of glitter through the living room
we traipsed through Ashanas backyard into
the underbrush, searching for that perfect
sunshine that would set that glitter shining
like the dew dripped leaves we were wad-
ing through. Meranda was perfectly in the
moment capturing the carefree nature of
a fairy feeling the last of the season before
snowfall. Not an easy feat when your norm
is not topless and being chased through the
forrest by a crazy artist with a giant camera.

Magazine 101Build your own by Jace Jackson
When I decided to start my own magazine I first searched the Inter-
net doing as much research as I could with the limited knowledge that I had. I tried reaching out to other mag-
azine owners with no success. It has been almost 4 years since we started SHOTCALLER magazine and it has
been a ongoing learning adventure. We have made many successes and we have made many mistakes. I think
with the right mentor we could have saved years of struggling. I will be your mentor. In this four-part series of
how to start and run your own magazine the real way. I will warn you now that it is more work than most people
realize and it’s not for the faint of heart. Services and programs I will tell you about I personally use,so they are
the ones I will discuss.

Let us assume that you have done some research on your own and are committed to making your own successful
magazine. What comes next? First, you need to cover your ass both legally and financially by creating an LLC.
An LLC stands for limited liability company. I won’t go too much into this other than to say an LLC protect you
from getting sued as an individual and also by having an LLC you can write off all equipment, subscriptions,
and travel or much better end of the year tax return. You can go through online company that you can pay a
nice chunk of money to, to set an LLC up for you. Don’t. It is very easy to set up. Will take you less than an hour
before you are a new business owner. I am not familiar with other states but for you those of you in Wisconsin
simply go to SBA.com and follow their step-by-step instructions. It will cost you around hundred and $155 for
this one-time fee and you will also need one more very important thing for starting your magazine, a magazine
name.

Now that you have your magazine name and LLC license let’s talk about needed hardware and software programs
here is a list I suggest downloading and signing up for all of these services, some are free to use some are pay to
play.
The Hardware List:
*A laptop computer with at least 8 GB of RAM
*24 to 28 inch LED TV and HDMI cord
*A wireless mouse, wireless keyboard, jump drive
*A 1 TB external hard drive
*A smart phone
*Internet Connection

The Software List:
*Adobe Creative Cloud with Photoshop CC and Indesign -
Designing and building
*Mag Cloud - Print and digital sales
*WordPress -Website (option)
*Apache Open Office – A Free MS Office alternative
*All social media sites – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc.
*Kisspng.com-* for png (transparent background overlays free)

*Dropbox -File Sharing
*I may have overlooked some but this will get you started!

Once you have read and implamented the programs proceed to part#2 Loactedin “The Taste Issue”
