Above the Mud

A dragonfly represents change and light.

Amidst your storm, focus onto Christ
and step out in faith

Jesus calls to them saying "Take courage! It is I.

Do not be afraid." Mathew 14:27
The Lord never promised we will never see a storm in life
(as a matter of fact, He has told us to expect trouble John
16:33). Rather, He has promised that He will be with us in

the storm. He will never leave His children alone in the
midst of trouble; with perseverance they will overcome

(Deuteronomy 31:8; James 1:12).

It depicts a couple dressed in Peranakan matrimonial gear
while in reflective prayer.

Let the lifting up of my hands in prayer
be accepted as sweet-smelling incense in your presence.

For through the years, a garden we will plant,

filled with the fragrant beauty of roses.

A Peranakan Tale

Perhaps, the most significant Peranakan motifs are the
exquisite peony and celestial phoenix.

In this oil painting of a nyonya, I depicted her thoughts on
love and marriage. In its tightly clenched petals,
her peonies hide her fertile musings.

In it, arises a phoenix, a cosmic creature often seen on
pillow ends and wedding cups…sanctifying eternal and

harmonious love between a man and a woman.

Follow her romantic trail. You may be surprised as you
see “more” in my creation.

Prayers are Winged Angels

Be a Ray of Hope for someone in need. Fallen. We
straddle 2 domains. And this is a dark realm.
BUT we hold Eden in our spirit.

“Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace and the

evildoer will be stubble, and that day that is coming will set them on
fire, says the Lord Almighty. Not a root or branch will be left to
them.

But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise
with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves

released from the stall.”

Be still – Nature is a window to the spirit within us.

“Still waters” - waters that flow very slowly and calmly
- bring much peace and rest to one’s spirit.

One of the most relaxing things in life is the sound of a
flowing stream of water… it is something that brings you

to a place of calm, where you can focus without any
distractions.

In Hebrew, the words for ‘still waters’ in Psalm 23:2 are
“Mai Menochot”, meaning literally, “restful waters”.

" Be still and know that I am God" ... Psalms 43:10

Angel Heart
When we see with our hearts, we see mythically,
we begin to awaken and what we discover is that
things are not what they see. We may grow older

with the passing years but may the good Lord
always create in me a clean heart, renewed each

day by His wondrous love.

Ezekiel 36:26 says, “I will give you a new heart
and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from
you your heart of stone and give you a heart of

flesh..”

Ezer Kenegdo
When God creates Eve, He calls her

an “ezer kenegdo”.
“It is not good for man to be alone, I shall make him

an ezer kenegdo.” Gen 2:18

The various attempts we have in English are
“helper” or companion” or the notorious “help

meet”
Hebrew scholar Robert Alter who spent many years

translating the book of Genesis translates it as
“sustainer beside him”.

She rides the waves, alongside she sustains you.

Above Troubled Depths

So often, people believe in a God but doubt the deity of Jesus
Christ. They say He is just another prophet. To me, Jesus is
the son of God. God revealed Himself to us in a personal way
by coming down to earth and walking among us. Cherished

by Him, I am held above troubled depths by His Love.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe
in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be

saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are
justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your

faith and are saved.

Edenic Tea Notes in Chinatown

I chose this garlanded facade next to the Chinatown
Heritage Centre to backdrop some of the chinoise
things I grew up with.

Some of the tea notes I cherish are the biscuits of old, the
Retro thermos flasks that keep hot Kopi or Teh, the

traditional wedding baskets that hold treasures for the
bride, Ang Ku kueh for new babies
and the family Bak chang!

There's lots more in the gardens - of fragrant frangipanis
and water lilies in old dragon pots and of edenic memories

of happiness. #glimpsesofeden

Alfresco the gates to Chinatown

The “ma che" and the samsui woman are a
fiction of my imagination!

The five-foot way or “kaki lima” are typical of
the shophouses of Singapore and protect
pedestrians from the hot tropical sun
or sudden rain.

BRIDGING THE PAST AND PRESENT

Changing Singapore’s skyline since 2010 is one of the
world’s most difficult engineering feats – the ultramodern

Marina Bay Sands.
Gracing our journey since 1819, and inked into this
sketch, is Elgin Bridge – the first bridge built over the

Singapore River.
In 2019, we mark the 200th anniversary of Raffles’
arrival in Singapore and look to how our diverse ethnicity
has transformed our island republic over 200 years.
