LETTER FROM THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Welcome to the Habitat for Humanity of
Schenectady County, JAMBOREE! After a
difficult year, we are so happy to be back
together, celebrating safely with all of you. Not
unlike so many other businesses, Schenectady
Habitat closed its’ doors last spring but we kept
working, volunteering with Schenectady County
and the Schenectady Foundation to receive,
organize and deliver food to so many families in
need. We were thankful to be able to continue
helping our community in a different capacity. Although we
lost months of revenue at ReStore and the cost of building
materials continue to rise, we were able to stay focused
on our mission because of our core group of volunteers
who have kept our build sites active and moving forward.
Since 1993, Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady County
has partnered with working families, sponsors, and
communities to build safe, decent, affordable homes and
to provide support services that promote successful home
purchase and ownership. To date, we have built 57 homes
for qualified, working families. The result is dramatic and
positive differences in the lives of family members and
neighborhoods. We at Habitat are proud to build these
strong foundations in Schenectady to help strengthen and
support our community.
Home Is Where The Heart Is - This is especially true
for our Habitat homeowners who invest in themselves by
stepping up to homeownership. We are pleased to be part
of their journey. None of this would be possible without
the generosity of our incredible staff and Board, dedicated
volunteers, amazing corporate partners and all of YOU
who keep us moving forward everyday with your support.
On behalf of our Board and staff, I’d like to sincerely thank
you for your continued support of our organization that
keeps us doing what we do best: assist in our community
by building safe, affordable and quality housing.
Thank you for joining us tonight to help us build homes,
community and hope!

In July 2007 Jack Aernecke completed a 42 year
broadcasting career in the Tech Valley, Capital
Region area of upstate New York. His last 35
years was as anchor and business-technology
reporter at WRGB TV, a CBS affiliate.
In his reporting career Jack witnessed the start of
the nations first college based business incubator
at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and reported
on several entrepreneurs who converted their research
into businesses resulting in significant companies which
settled in Tech Valley and are employing hundreds of area
people in well paying jobs.
Jack was one of the first area reporters to see the potential
for high tech as a new economic force for the region. He
was one of the first reporters to consistently cover the
development and growth of the College of Nanoscale
Science and Engineering at the University of Albany,
now SUNY Poly, along with the investment of billions of
dollars by high tech companies. That led to the creation
of a world class research facility that now employs over
3,000 people and is the home to International Sematech.
Researchers work in a number of areas involved with
designing the technology to make computer chips of the
future faster, more complex and more efficient. He also
reported on how those education-business partnerships
led to the successful effort to attract Advanced Micro
Devices to the Luther Forest Technology Park in nearby
Saratoga County where their spin-off, Global Foundries,
has built and may build several modern computer chip
manufacturing facilities. Those successes are largely
credited to the business education partnerships that first
started in the region in the early 80’s.
Since retirement, Jack has maintained his interest in the
local high tech community. He is providing voice and
narration services for a number of clients, everything
from commercials to in house instructional and marketing
materials.
Jack lives in Schenectady. His son Matthew is a research
chemist. Jack’s grandsons, Luke and Devin, are the two
cutest grandchildren in the history of the world!

Doug began volunteering with
Schenectady Habitat around 2007-
2008, but stopped when he grew busy
with other things including mentoring
the Shen High School robotics team. He
reconnected with Habitat in 2018 as he
was nearing retirement and has been a
consistent volunteer ever since. It’s hard
to believe that Doug started volunteering
relatively recently because he has
become such a regular fixture on our
build crew. We rarely go a week without
seeing him. Considering his mechanical
skills, volunteering at Habitat has been a
wonderful fit for Doug who likes to get the
job done and done right.
About his motivation to volunteer Doug shares, “I’ve always enjoyed
designing and building things, and that’s probably the common theme to
my work at GE, my projects at home, and my volunteering for Habitat and
FIRST Robotics. Habitat and robotics both give me opportunities to give
back to the community, share & transfer some of my knowledge to others,
while doing things I enjoy, with a nice group of people who have become
good friends. Tasks I particularly like are those that give me an opportunity
to learn new skills while also using my design & engineering skills to figure
out how to do things well. Recent examples have included stairs, Logix
block foundations, and some of the details of vinyl siding.”
One thing that makes Doug special is that he is always willing to take
newer or less skilled people under his wing and teach them what he
knows. He has remained with us throughout the pandemic, and is willing
to put in extra days volunteering if we need him, as well as assisting our
favorite volunteer electrician Bernie on off-days. We appreciate his talent
and his willingness to dedicate his time to serve our mission.

HABITAT FOR HUM
Christian and his wife Arelis first applied to become
homeowners in Fall 2020. A second generation
Habitat family, Arelis’ parents are Schenectady Habitat
homeowners! Christian is a military veteran, and we
are thrilled to say that he and his wife will serve as the
homeowners for our first ever Veteran’s Build, a program
which brings together veterans to build a home for a
veteran. We had a groundbreaking for their future home
on Carrie St on Veteran’s Day 2020. Christian and his wife
are in the early stages of our homeowner process, but will
likely move into their home within the next year. He and
his wife have four children who are thrilled at the prospect
of moving into a home with more space. They are eager to
begin the process of sweat equity and are excited to live
in their new neighborhood which has a playground at the
end of the block.
MANITY FAMILIES
Originally from Guatemala, Faustino has lived in
Schenectady for over a decade. His wife Sandra grew
up in Puerto Rico, but moved to New York over 30 years
ago. Sandra works in the healthcare field, while Faustino
works as a landscaper and has shown great skill and
determination when working with us at the build site.
Faustino started his sweat equity a couple of years ago,
and was a part of building the home on Oaklawn Avenue,
as well as helping to rehab the home on Eastern Avenue.
Now, with the house on Lenox, it is finally his family’s time
for their own home.
We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Faustino on the
build site, and he enjoys the work too, so much so that he
has done many more sweat equity hours than he was
required to. Faustino and Sandra are projected to move
into their home this month!
What a good feeling it is to be able to be a
part of an organization, a team that has so
positive an impact on peoples’ lives! The
ramps we build, the houses we build or
rehab, the neighborhoods we improve, the
families and communities we help –WOW!
Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady
County, Inc. is a great example of how
wonderful, smart, hardworking people,
staff, volunteers, board members and
supporters – all working together, doing
their part make great things happen!
– Lew Dufort
There are so many reasons
to volunteer. Mostly because
it just feels good to do good.
But Habitat specifically is a
place that touches so many
lives and to be a small part
of something big is a great
feeling.
– Kathleen Schnitzer
I volunteer with Habitat for
Humanity because I want to give
back to my community. It’s the
right thing to do on so many levels,
and volunteering is part of the
rent I pay to belong to a caring,
loving, family-oriented agency and
community. I want to be part of
the ‘village’ that it takes to build a
house which becomes a home for
a family.
– Russ Traunstein

The Veteran’s Build is an initiative trough Habitat for Humanity
International whereby Habitat affiliates bring together veterans to build a
home for a veteran. We are thrilled to have celebrated Veteran’s Day
with the groundbreaking of our first Veteran’s Build! The future
homeowners (Cuevas Family) were on hand to participate in the
celebration and are eager to begin their sweat equity and move forward
towards homeownership.
We at Schenectady Habitat are so thankful to our military and veterans
who serve and protect our country, making it possible for us to do the
work we do! And many thanks to IUE-CWA for making this Veteran’s

opportunity of homeownership. Forever grateful Tapia family”
“Owning my own home has been
important to me because it gives
me security to raise my kids.
Being a homeowner is a blessing
because not only does it give my
family security but stability as
well, a place we can call home
and not have to worry about
moving every time there’s a
problem in the apartments we
would rent out. I thank God we
have a house that is safe to call
home that my kids can grow up
in. Hard work does pay off.
