share 192 years and counting in the union. A feat not too many can
challenge. Here’s part of their story.

“June 7, 1943, I graduated from high school and went right into the
union. My first job as an apprentice I made 85 cents an hour and
gave my mom $10 a week,” said eldest brother Bob. At 92, Bob
told the group how his father wanted him to be a mechanic, but
carpentry was his choice and it was definitely better than working on
the family farm. “I did not like to milk cows.”

He was hired by Kenneth to work for Alexander Building

including 35 years as a superintendent.

Though Bob refers to himself as a lowly carpenter, as
opposed to his superintendent brothers, he still made
a name for himself first as a union representative, and
then as president of the state council of union carpenters
where he was elected without opposition.

As the brothers reminisced about their careers, they each
told stories. Bob spoke about his time in the Navy during
World War II and how he helped build the Harrisburg
Turnpike Bridge after the war. He also pointed out the
raise he got of making 90 cents an hour to $1.50 per hour.

Kenneth shared two projects he worked on. He traveled
to Connecticut to rebuild one of the country’s oldest
amusement parks, Lake Compouse. Why? Because of
his experience building roller coasters at Hershey Park.
He talked about his time working at Pennsylvania State
University where he was part of the crew that raised the
stadium 12 ½ feet—bleachers and all.
