The purpose of
a business is to
make money.
Or is it?
By Conrad Erasmus
For a very long time, I have been intrigued by business.
As my formal studies and work-life experiences came
together I have come to re-affirm a few key points about
what drives business performance. It’s probably best to
call out up-front that I am unashamedly influenced by
the work of Simon Sinek, John Spence, Adam Grant and
numerous others.
Some recent reading reminded me that there are still
some who believe that profit and balance sheet strength
is the purpose of an organisation. Too often the question,
“Why are you in business?”is met with the response
“To make money.”This may seem like quite a logical
assumption at first glance, there is more to it than that.
To expand on this, let us consider a simple corner
fish and chip shop. Customers do not arrive at the shop
saying,“here is my money to contribute to your profits”,
rather they have multiple expectations which need to be
met for the cash transfer transaction to occur. Using the
Critical to Customer model, one can identify key variables
which influence the level of customer satisfaction with
the product and service. Generally, most would expect
good quality food prepared in hygienic conditions
in a reasonable period of time and that the service
experience was pleasant and engaging. For this holistic
experience, customers are willing to pay a reasonable
price. Assuming the price includes a margin over cost,
the customer has rewarded the owners with profit for
meeting the need to purchase some good fish and chips.
It is not the owner rewarding the customer with some
fish and chips for the contribution to profit.

be left doing everything yourself in a
business that’s little more than a trap.
Without the Entrepreneur, your
business will never change. Without
the Manager, you’ll have no idea what
to do next. Without the Technician, you
might have a complete business plan,
but you’ll never actually get started.
If you start a business with the goal of
doing the same job you have right now,
you’re starting from the Technician’s
perspective. Your goals centre around
your work, rather than the opposite way
around. To that end…
Create a business, not a job
Many businesses are started with one
thought in mind -“I could do this better
than them.”There’s nothing inherently
wrong with that, but all too often,
it leads to the new business entirely
depending on the person starting it.
- Michael E. Gerber, The E-Myth
Revisited, p.40:
“If your business depends on you,
you don’t own a business - you have a
job. And it’s the worst job in the world
because you’re working for a lunatic!”
The only way to avoid this when
starting a business is to look at it from
a completely different perspective. You
need to decide on a goal (or lifestyle) to
shoot for because this vision will let you
determine what kind of business you’ll
need to achieve that.
Once you have that, you can let your
Entrepreneur take over and run wild
with ideas. Ideas that your Manager
can organize and plan. Plans that your
Technician can research and confirm
the worth of.
In other words, you need to be
creating your business long before you
ever officially have a job in it.
Work on your business, not in it. This
saying is heard many times and is one
of the first things a business coach or
mentor will say to you.
When starting out with a small
business, you probably won’t have
enough employees to delegate the

Grant Verry ONEPURE is famous premium quality natural pH8 artesian
water, filled with natures electrolytes and life essential trace
elements, based in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. It is our great
honour to have the opportunity to interview Grant Verry, General
Manager of One Pure to know more about them.
Q1: Hi Grant. What is ONEPURE’s mission?
Grant: ONEPURE has one mission. To share the benefits of
natural, New Zealand pH8 artesian mineral water with people.
Empower and inspire them to live their best, healthiest, life – pure
and authentic to them. We want to keep our community inspired,
engaged and with their eyes on the prize …their best life.
Q2: Could you please introduce ONEPURE water source?
Grant: ONEPURE sources its natural water from the
Heretaunga Plains aquifer, located in the east of New Zealand’s
North Island in the Hawke’s Bay. This rich water resource is fed by
the rainfall landing high in the pristine and largely uninhabited
native landscape of Kaimanawa and Kaweka Ranges.
New Zealand’s isolation and low levels of industrialisation
coupled with a largely untouched natural landscape, make it the
ideal location from which to source premium artesian water
Q3: What is the main benefit of your PH8 water?
Grant: Get vital oxygen… faster! Water is essential for life.
As the major component of blood, it helps carry nutrients and
oxygen to feed and revitalise the body and helps remove toxins
and the products of the metabolism. Normal blood pH is slightly
alkaline at 7.35. This level is maintained by carbon dioxide-
bicarbonate-carbonate equilibrium. Tiny differences in pH can
substantially affect the blood’s ability to transfer oxygen, e.g. the
shift from 7.3 to 7.5 allows 75% more oxygen to be available for
use. Enjoy the ‘Power of Eight’ with ONEPURE water!

summarised 6 actions you should consider when planning
your house renovation.
1. Think About Efficiency old houses may have multiple open fire places, others have
none and are heated with small space heaters. The open fire
places are neither efficient nor healthy. And most of the space
heaters are not big enough for the rooms they are required
to heat. We advocate for putting an efficient and renewable
heating source, considering the ever-growing energy costs.
With good insulation, a small efficient wood burner or heat
pump might be already enough to keep you warm and cozy
at home, for a fraction of the cost you paid so far.
Please find out with the energywise link below if you are
eligible for a heating grant, covering part of the insulation
and heat source costs.

2. Check Out Renewable Energy
Older buildings are often not insulated and cold. It means With the ever-rising electricity prices and the progress

ability in keeping the warmth in your home, many natural
insulation materials also give you better acoustics and help
in regulating moisture in your home. Good insulation in
your ceilings, floors and walls also mean a smaller heating
source is sufficient to heat your home and lower your costs
of heating.
Once we are able to contain the heat with insulation, we
should also look in to how to create the heat. While some

3. Pay Attention To The “Silent” Dangers: Humidity and Many options should be explored: putting in more

a shower or just breathing, all create humidity. In addition, 5. Be Aware Of The Potential Cost

natural insulation, plant life and breathable paint. Let’s get
rid of damp homes.
A modern hidden danger is the toxins in the materials
we invite into our homes. Furniture, paints and carpet can
contain many toxins, which could enter into our bodies
silently and potentially harm us and our families (6). Products
are measured individually in their toxicity and deemed safe
for use, however we in our home have many different toxic
materials added together. Keeping toxic materials to a
minimum will no doubt aid our health long term.
4. There Shall Be Light
Natural light from the sun heats up our homes and
brightens our spaces. Older buildings however often are not
properly orientated on site or laid out internally to capture
sunlight. Your home might have been extended and with that
lost direct sunlight. Or your house does not have enough
windows to capture enough heat and light from the sun.

It is important to set the priorities right, especially once the
unidentified renovation need is identified. Knowing what is
a necessity and what is a “cherry on top” would assist you in
running your home improvement project smoothly. It would
also help you keep focus and achieve what you set out to do.
Conclusion
Going forward renovating our old houses will become very
important. Our homes can be efficient, sustainable and healthy.
We need to do it. Not only because we owe it to ourselves, but
also we owe it to our families and our planet.
To achieve that, together with Grant (Grant McSherry), we
recommend:
• Save on future running costs by insulating your home
well and checking out renewable energy options.
• Live dryer and healthier by ventilating properly, use
natural / nontoxic materials and add sunlight to a dark home.
• Speak with a specialist about a potential budget
buffer for your particular project and focus your priorities.
Potential funding for your project can be found in
several ways: for insulation there are grants on https://www.
energywise.govt.nz/tools/warmer-kiwi-homes-tool/ and
the ANZ bank is providing for its’ customers a potentially
interest free loan of $5k at present. Considering the smaller
environmental impacts and large old housing stock in NZ,
additional funding options will hopefully be explored in the
near future to make renovating more attractive.
