The All Girl Big Band Powerhouse!
By Clare Erasmus
“Jazz is not just music,
it’s a way of life, it’s a
way of being, a way of
thinking.”
- Nina Simone
If you are looking for a powerhouse
of sound that will blow you away, then
you’ve got to get yourself into the
audience of the All Girl Big Band!
This remarkable Big Band is one
of a kind - the first female Big Band in
New Zealand. Comprising of eighteen
talented musicians and directed by the
one and only Lana Law, this band is
just as the name suggests, a band of
profoundly musical women!
These eighteen Christchurch
women have changed the face of the
jazz scene in New Zealand. Most of the
members are professional musicians
and/or music teachers in and around
Christchurch. Not only are they great
entertainers but they are on the
cutting edge of empowering female
musicians, leading through inspiration.
They work hard to inspire other female
musicians to confidently advance in
the jazz world.

Lana is in her own right, an outright

high demand as a session musician
for many different types of bands,
recordings and shows. Her passion is
teaching students and groups, both
privately and as an itinerant music
teacher and Band Director in schools.
The All Girl Big Band’s Beginnings
The beginnings of the All Girl Big
Band emanated from a conversation
between music director, Lana Law, and
vocalist Kate Taylor, where they were
discussing the possibility of creating a
big band in Christchurch with female
musicians only. Recognising that
this musical genre is primarily male
dominated, the conversation got the
ball rolling and the All Girl Big Band
emerged in 2016. It has been growing
from strength to strength ever since.
What are the values of the band?
The band has values that aim to
develop the mindsets of up and
coming female musicians. Their aim is
to:
- Inspire young female musicians
- Keep jazz alive locally and
nationally
“We enjoy playing
a variety of different
styles of big band music
to a high standard
of musicianship.
Performing music that
interests the audience is
important to us.”
- Lana Law
Where can you find the All Girl Big
Band Jamming?
The All Girl Big Band’s next gig is on
Friday 30th July from 8:00 to 10:30 at
12 Bar, 342 St Asaph Street.
Keep an eye out for the Christchurch
Big Band Festival over Labour
Weekend in October, where the band
will be performing at various venues.

Customer Privacy
The information held by small
business grows with each customer
interaction via the new digital
channels, providing another target to
cyber-criminals. Early indications show
that some businesses lack awareness
of data privacy and controls. As our
personal, professional, financial,
and digital assets are increasingly
tied to our identity, a leak of identity
information can have long-lasting
implications for victims.
Loss of customer information
impacts both customer privacy and
business reputation. As COVID-19
permanently changes consumer
habits, the reputation of a small
business takes on new significance.
With assumptions playing a vital role
in online interactions, a small business
involved in a data breach can lose
customers very easily to another online
offering. As an executive of Unilever
pointed out, “They simply can’t afford
to spend money on products they’re
not sure of.” The need for customer
trust extends to trust in the business
itself, and this goodwill has become
more important than ever.
These are just selected risks that
are new to small businesses forced
into a new way of operating due to
COVID-19. These risks previously had
limited impact operationally due to
lack of reliance on IT systems by many
small businesses. During COVID-19,
these risks need to be managed
carefully due to the lack of alternative
sales and communication channels.
Post COVID-19, these risks, if left
unchecked, take on new significance
with implications for the viability of the
business.
