The National Defence Academy (NDA) is India’s premier training institute for the NDA Syllabus 2023 
armed forces of the country. It is responsible for grooming future defence and NDA Salary 2023
armed forces officers. The selection process to get admission into the NDA is a NDA Result 2023
rigorous one, and only the most suitable and talented candidates are selected.

The Written Examination

The written exam of the NDA is the first step towards achieving the dream of
joining the armed forces. The exam tests the knowledge and aptitude of the
candidate. UPSC conducts the exam twice a year, in April and September, on
the first Sunday of the corresponding months.
The examination consists of two papers - Mathematics and General Ability
Test (GAT). The Mathematics paper contains 120 multiple-choice questions
(MCQs), and the GAT paper contains 150 MCQs. In both papers, the candidates
get two and a half hours to complete the exam. Both papers are equally
important, and the total marks for both papers together is 900, out of which
300 marks are for the Mathematics paper and 600 for the GAT paper.
The NDA Written Exam is based on the 10+2 syllabus and includes topics such
as Maths, Chemistry, Physics, GK, English, and Current Affairs. It is mandatory
for the candidates to score 50% marks in the written exam for the selection
process. The selection process also includes a physical examination, SSB
interview, and medical examination.
Preparing for the NDA Written Exam requires thorough knowledge of the
syllabus, hard work, dedication and practice. The goal of the NDA entrance
exam is to test the mental and physical strength of the applicants before they
join the academy. Successfully passing the exam will pave the way for an
aspirant to join one of the most prestigious institutions in the country and serve
the nation.

The SSB Interview

The National Defence Academy (NDA) conducts its selection process in two stages
- the written exam (aptitude test) and the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview.
The SSB interview is a five-day residential process that includes psychological
assessments, group tasks, and an interview.

The SSB interview evaluates an individual's mental and physical suitability for the
National Defence Academy. The interview is conducted in two stages – the
Screening Test and the Main Test. The Screening Test includes intelligence tests
such as Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), Word Association Test (WAT), Self
Description Test(SDT) and Situation Reaction Test (SRT). These tests assess the
candidate's intelligence, problem-solving skills, leadership traits and other
qualities.

The Psychological assessments

1. The Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)

It evaluates a candidate's ability to accurately perceive, analyse and describe
a picture. The TAT assesses a candidate's skill in perceiving and developing a
mental image. A few seconds' glimpses of a simple image are presented.
A total of 11 such images are shown, and each image is shown for near about
30 seconds. Then a story is narrated from it in 4 minutes. It analyses the
candidate’s imaginative aptitude, observes their power of observation,
visualises their thought process, and gauges their decision-making
capabilities.

2. The Word Association Test (WAT)

This test assesses the instantaneous response abilities of the applicant and is
an integral part of the psychological testing procedure.
The test requires the aspirant to come up with a sentence with the word on the
screen. There will be a total of 60 words. Each word will be on the screen for 15
seconds, within which you have to write a sentence from it.
Based on their responses, the interviewer assesses their reaction speed and the
ability to quickly come up with a decision.

3. The Self Description Test (SDT)

This test evaluates the way in which a candidate is able to portray and present
themselves. The test requires the candidate to write about themself, family,
friends, etc.
The SDT is an important part of the assessment process, as it allows the NDA to
assess the candidate’s self-awareness, communication skills, and personality.
Candidates have to provide a summary of themselves which should indicate
their strengths and weaknesses.
Candidates must display a confident demeanour, good communication and
presentation skills, the ability to think analytically, and an understanding of the
NDA’s values and mission. The objective of the SDT is to assess the cadet's
potential to become a successful leader.

4. The Situation Reaction Test (SRT)

The SRT tests the candidates’

analytical thinking ability,
attitude towards facing challenging situations,
ability to take the initiative and confidence in responding to different given
situations.

This test comprises a set of 60 situational questions. The aspirant is tested on how
he/she responds to different situations. Also, the test gives an idea of the thought
process and decision-making of the candidate.

The Group tasks

The group activities consist of two parts - the group discussion (GD) and
progressive group tasks (PGT). In the group discussion, the candidates,

discuss problems,
put forward their own solutions,
negotiate with each other,
analyse complex and conflicting issues,
and be able to think out of the box.

They must also be able to discuss topics in a balanced manner, taking into account
the opinions of others and building consensus. The PGT, on the other hand, requires
the candidate to undergo different hurdles and obstacles, both individually and
with the team. The candidate then leads a team of 2-3 members, which tests his
leadership qualities.

The candidates crisscross various hurdles through ropes, woods, nets, etc. In the
team obstacle race, the various groups compete against each other. Lastly, the
candidate has to give a lecture of 3 minutes on a particular topic given to him/her.

The Personal Interview

The personal interview is the most important and all-encompassing part of the
NDA selection process. The interview ensures that the candidate is the right fit
for a successful career in the Indian National Defence Academy.
During the personal interview, the SSB board gets to know the candidate
intimately. They assess their self-discipline, physical and mental fitness,
attitude, and the strength of their character.
The aim of this part of the interview is to see if the candidate is ready to serve
the nation. It also ensures that they are physically and mentally fit to handle
the challenges that being a part of the NDA entails.
The personal interview is a crucial part of the NDA selection process.
Candidates must be mentally and physically prepared for this stage.
Candidates must remain confident, honest, humble and well-informed to make
a good impression on the SSB board and secure a successful place in the NDA.

The Medical Test

The final stage of the selection process is the Medical Examination. A panel of
expert doctors assesses the candidates on the basis of the medical standards
set by the Ministry of Defence. After the successful completion of the tests, the
candidate is eligible for enrolment in the National Defence Academy.
The examination consists of a comprehensive physical fitness assessment and
basic medical tests. They determine the candidate’s appropriateness for
military service.
The Medical Officers of SSB usually conduct these tests. It includes a number of
health checks, including eyesight checking, general physical capability, height
and vital signs like blood pressure, pulse and respiration. Medical Officers also
assess the candidate’s mental well-being during the medical assessment.
In addition to the physical tests, the applicant also needs to check for any
medical condition such as colour blindness, flat foot and knocked knee to

ensure compliance with standards globally.
The selection of candidates for a permanent commission is also based on past
medical history and any ailments that may limit the performance of the
individual in the future.
After the medical tests, the authorities submit the result to the NDA officials.
