It was marked in ancient maps as Langka, Langa, Lansura and Langapura. 2. The name means reddish-brown eagle in colloquial Malaysia. Spanning 47,848 hectares, Langkawi can be found approximately 25km north-west of Malaysia on the Andaman Sea. How To Get To Langkawi By Flight Hopping on a flight to Langkawi is the easiest and fastest way to get there. Just book a flight directly to Langkawi International Airport is located at the south-western part of the island. There are no public buses or trains in Langkawi, you will need to either hop on a private transfer or book a taxi/ e-hailing service upon arrival. Travel Duration: - Kuala Lumpur <> Langkawi: 1 hr ± - Singapore <> Langkawi: 1 hr 25 mins. ± - Penang <> Langkawi: 35 mins. ± By Ferry An alternative would be for you to drive up to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis for a ferry ride to the island. The journey from these locations to Langkawi typically takes about 1 hour depending on sea conditions. Conservation Area CHAPTER 1 Langkawi is a geologist’s treasure trove and a history book of the earth’s formation. In 2007, Langkawi was awarded the UNESCO Global Geopark status, the first Global Geopark in Southeast Asia. Within the 47,848 hectares of land in Langkawi, established as the oldest landmass in Malaysia, are found more than 38 geosites of outstanding value that require protection. Currently, only three geoforest parks and a biogeotrail have been fully developed, namely Machinchang Cambrian Geoforest Park, Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park. These Geoparks and Kubang Badak BioTrail are designated to promote not only geological heritage, but also biological heritage and cultural heritage, which are very crucial for maintaining a healthy and sustainable environment. Step Back In Time at Langkawi Geoforest Park Machinchang Rainforest 1 MACHINCHANG CAMBRIAN GEOFOREST PARK Machinchang Cambrian Geoforest Park, located in the northwest of Langkawi Island, is the oldest clastic sedimentary rock at the age of 550 million years old. It features barren rocky peaks, stunning sandstone cliffs, and deltaic to shallow marine deposits that depicts the changing environment that denotes its age and history. Be on the lookout for cross-beds, ripple marks, ancient burrows, telling footprints as well as body fossils of ancient animals and plants. Machinchang is Malaysia’s oldest mountain range, probably the most ancient rainforest on the planet. SkyBridge SkyTrail Jungle Trekking v. SkyTrail There are three different paths to take with the starting point being Oriental Village at the Cable Car’s base station. The easiest trail stretches 900m long and can be completed in 45 minutes while the intermediate trail features a 1.3km trail which will take approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes to complete. For a more intense experience, sign up for the extreme trail which measures 2.2km long and involves a 3 hour and 30 minute uphill hike. SkyBridge The journey along the curved bridge starts with either a cable car ride up to the top station and a ride on an inclined lift called the SkyGlide, or a 10 to 20 minutes steep mountain track up to the SkyBridge. Langkawi SkyBridge is one of the world’s longest curved suspension bridges, it connects two hilltops of Mount Machinchang, the 125m long and 1.8m wide bridge maximises the viewing experience by providing a shifting perspective of its surroundings. 2 KILIM KARST GEOFOREST PARK Stretching across at 4,354 hectare, the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park is home to lofty limestone rock formations rising majestically over the river bed and awe-inspiring mangrove forests millions of years old. You will fall in love with the wide spectrum of geological wonders such as encapsulating caves, coastal and island karst morphologies, old fossils as well as lush mangroves filled with a variety of flora and fauna. Gua Kelawar “Kelawar’’ means bat in Malay, so there should be no surprise as to the highlight of this cave. A footbridge goes through the cave system that houses Malaysian fruit bats hanging aloft in the cold, dark cave. Nestled amidst the mangrove swamps of Sungai Kilim, northeast of the island, it is accessible via Tanjung Rhu Jetty by a 90-minute boat ride. ii. Gua Cherita Known for its mythological story of Battle of the ‘Battle of Big Birds’, Gua Cherita consists of two caves that sit quaintly on top of one another facing the sea. Air Terjun Temurun Air Terjun Tama Air Terjun Temurun Great for picnics, Air Terjun Temurun is three tiers with a 200-metre drop making it the highest waterfall in Langkawi. Streams of this waterfall flow off Gunung Machinchang in the north and consists mainly of shale and sandstone dating back 500 million years. Hike to the top of Langkawi’s tallest waterfall will takes about  30  to 45  minutes, it can be intimidating, be sure to wear proper shoes, as the hiking trail can be slippery and rocky. Gunung Raya 4 Gunung Raya Standing mighty and tall at 881 metres, hiking enthusiasts can conquer the mountain’s via road or by climbing 4,287 steep steps, called Tangga Helang Seribu Kenangan. It is the highest mountain of Langkawi, experience it’s impenetrable rainforest habitat, formed atop the 220-200-million-year-old granite foundation. Surrounded by dense forest reserves, be sure to catch sight of or take pictures of dusky leaf monkeys, flying foxes, macaque monkeys, great hornbills and more here. The duration of trek up to the top will take between 1½-2 hours, coming down takes half the time.
