HIS EARLY LIFE

Warta Malaya Warta Ahad (2.5.1937) Early Malay nationalism took root in Johor during the 1920s, he became a journalist and wrote articles on the welfare
of the Malays. Some of Onn's articles were critical of Sultan Ibrahim's policies, which led to strained personal
relations with the Sultan. In particular, Sultan Ibrahim expelled Onn from Johor in 1927 after he published an article
in the Sunday Mirror, a Singapore-based English tabloid, which criticised the Sultan's poor treatment of the Johor
Military Forces personnel and the welfare of the Orang Asli. He went into exile in Singapore and became the editor
of a Malay paper, Warta Malaya, in 1930. Over the next six years, he edited four other newspapers including
Lembaga Malaya, Warta Ahad and Lembaga. Onn became very popular after he continued to cover issues on Malay
grievances, and Sultan Ibrahim invited Onn to return to Johor in 1936. Following the Japanese occupation of Malaya
in 1941, Onn was drafted into the administrative system and served as a food controller in Johor. Along with his
companions, Haji Anwar bin Abdul Malik, Haji Syed Alwi bin Syed Sheikh al-Hadi and Mohamed Noah Omar, they
founded the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) as a means to rally the Malays against the Malayan
Union, which was perceived as threatening Malay privileges and the position of the Malay rulers. Onn took up the
role of UMNO's president on 1 May 1946.

The United Malays National Organisation is Malaysia's largest, main Malay and national political party.
UMNO's goals are to uphold the aspirations of Malay nationalism and the concept of Ketuanan Melayu, as
well as the dignity of race, religion and country. The party also aspires to protect the Malay culture as the
national culture and to uphold, defend and expand Islam across Malaysia.

Setting up the Rural Industrial Development Authority (RIDA)
The Rural Industrial Development Authority (RIDA) was established in 1951 by the British colonial
administration as a program to provide economic assistance and support to Malay farmers and rural
inhabitants.

When Dato' Sir Onn bin Dato' Jaafar became a journalist and wrote articles on the welfare of the Malays, some of Onn's articles were
Ambitious critical of Sultan Ibrahim's policies, which led to strained personal relations with Sultan Ibrahim. Sultan Ibrahim expelled Onn from
Johor in 1927. Even, when is exiled from his birthplace, he still chooses to write and give critics on many issues. He is a person that is
the embodiment of fearlessness. Later, Dato’ Onn became very popular after he continued to cover issues on Malay grievances, and
Sultan Ibrahim invited Onn to return to Johor in 1936. This shows that Dato Onn Jaafar is capable and fearless in face of oppression.

His ambition in making Malay people stronger and to have privilege is the dream that drives that ambition. Dato Onn Jaafar along with his
companions, founded the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) to rally the Malays against the Malayan Union, which was
perceived as threatening Malay privileges and the position of the Malay rulers. He took up the role of UMNO's president on 1 May 1946.
He always moves firmly towards his goal. In the end, he was able to achieve the dream by giving the Malay community a privilege and a
legacy to carry that can help them when needed. He went through a lot of oppression and still triumphs. He is truly the embodiment of
fearlessness and persistence.

-Epilogue-

The contribution by Dato Onn in achieving independence is
undeniable. He should be remembered as someone who fought
against the independence from the British, instead of being
regarded as the 'Father of Independence’. He will always be the
Malayan nationalist that will hold a special place in Malaysians’
hearts.
Suffice to say, without his contributions, Malaysia may have not
existed today.
